National Retail Federation To Dissolve STORES Magazine After 100 Years
Is Print Media Losing That Much Readership?
According to an email sent to the D&D Daily today from Naylor Association
Solutions, the STORES Media Advertising arm, the NRF has decided, after 100
years, to dissolve STORES Media as an entire brand.
The Oct/Nov and December issues of STORES magazine are the last ways to reach
the entire membership of NRF. The December issue will be a "farewell" issue.
Everything, print and digital, will all be gone after 12/31/2019.
According to our sources, ad revenue had been declining for some time. While
members continued to share how valuable the content was, there just wasn't the
support for a print publication. Certainly
NRF.com will continue to have retail stories, trends, and insights.
Editor's Note: It's sad to see such a publication of historic
value ending. However, we feel confident that NRF.com will continue to offer
some of the same value STORES delivered.
This development is certainly reflective of the macro environment of print
publications. With some experts saying that the print media outlets have been
the most impacted by the internet, of all sectors.
And as the digital age continues to impact the print media industry, it's also
having the same impact on the brick and mortar stores. With almost the exact
same end results. With consumers and readers acting similarly and literally
glued to their monitors and phones, reading and buying there first. A trend that
everyone agrees will continue. The issue is how far will it go?
El Paso Victims' Lawsuit Against Walmart Tests Security Responsibility
of Retail Landlords
In the suit, shooting victims Jessica and Guillermo Garcia - who remains in
critical condition after 13 surgeries -
challenge a long-standing belief that retailers and shopping center owners
aren't responsible for violent acts on their premises.
Their suit alleges Walmart had no active security on-site during the mass
killing, and contends that this lack was negligent.
The Garcias' case against Walmart could serve as a bellwether for security in
retail and test the high burden of proof plaintiffs usually face when trying to
make a landlord, property manager or business owner liable for violence on their
property.
The Current Retail Security Landscape
While Walmart did not answer Bisnow's inquiry as to whether it had
security on site at the El Paso shooting location,
news media reports and the Garcia lawsuit say no discernible security was on
the premises when the gunman entered the front door and launched his attack.
El Paso Police spokesman Sgt. Enrique Carrillo told Bisnow Walmart
previously had off-duty officers at El Paso Walmarts, but it
stopped that practice
sometime prior to the August shooting spree. Since the incident,
the retailer is now using the services
of off-duty El Paso police again, Carrillo said.
Bisnow visited roughly 25 stores in Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston this
month, including several Walmarts,
Dick's Sporting Goods,
Lowe's, Best
Buys, Targets, Home Depots, Costcos and Walmart-affiliated Sam's Clubs, and
observed security guards at only three locations.

Senate Republicans are responding cautiously to a new proposal to expand
background checks for gun sales that the Trump administration is circulating on
Capitol Hill.
The memo, titled, "Idea for New Unlicensed-Commercial-Sale Background Checks,"
proposes expanding background checks to all advertised commercial sales,
including sales at guns shows, along the lines of the Manchin-Toomey proposal.

Industry experts share business fears with Biometrics Institute
"What keeps you awake at night?" the
Biometrics Institute asked a number of industry stakeholders at a recent
event, and a video featuring a series of responses has been produced to foster
conversation within the industry.
The public image of biometrics, misinformation about the technology's accuracy
and uses, and public perception of privacy risks are among the worries expressed
by representatives from various biometrics companies.
Representatives from Leidos, Sita, iProov, and OVD Kinegram share their thoughts
in the video, which was shared on
Twitter with the hashtag "#Justbecausewecanshouldwe."
The need for proportional and appropriate use, data protection, increased
engagement from national testing bodies, and communication which is transparent,
honest, and clear are articulated as things the industry needs to work on.
Engagement with governments, which have historically held identity data, is
identified as a way to gain public trust, while collaboration could help promote
rapid uptake of the technology.

Global restrictions on facial recognition speed up development of new biometric
surveillance technologies
The high number of concerns and controversies around government use of facial
recognition technology in surveillance and lack of proper regulation has led to
new research on how other biometric features such as
gait, microbiome, heartbeat, indoor movement and odor can be used for mass
surveillance.
According to
Wired, researchers have already developed lasers that detect heartbeat and
microbiome, while more invasive technology will soon follow.

International Union of Marine Insurance Wants Action on Cargo Theft
The International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) has published a revision of
its position paper on cargo theft prevention. Cargo crime has reached alarming
proportions, says the IUMI, calling for action to minimize the risks. In
particular,
the IUMI says efforts by law enforcement agencies to increase transnational
cooperation to combat cargo theft must be enhanced.
Criminals are becoming increasingly innovative, going beyond direct theft from
trucks and instead involving more sophisticated methods such as posing as
legitimate transportation companies or jamming vehicle tracking systems. In many
cases, cargo crimes are not committed out of opportunity or as single incidents.
The perpetrators are well-organized and highly professional and their operations
cover every detail from the gathering of information by insiders to sales
planning in case of "theft to order". The criminal structures behind the thefts
are increasingly transnational and online communication is becoming
fundamentally important for the planning and execution of these operations.
Online freight exchange platforms facilitate the ability for criminals to take
on the identity of legitimate freight carriers, using their employees' names,
companies and logos to organize thefts of cargo offered for transport on those
electronic freight platforms.
IUMI's position paper calls for the continuation of exchange of best practice
across borders on local initiatives; establishing a dedicated cargo theft
taskforce; training with a focus on cargo theft awareness and prevention; and
enhanced due diligence by shippers, logistics/transportation companies when

Detecting and Responding to POS Skimmers and Shimmers
The Growing Threat of POS Skimmers and Shimmers
Point-of-Sale skimmers and shimmers are a pervasive and growing threat to
retailers.
Global loses from all forms of credit card fraud are estimated by The Nilson
Report to exceed $32 billion in 2019. One fast-growing type of fraud impacting
retailers is the use of POS skimmers and shimmers. Secretly installed by
criminal actors on top of credit card terminals to intercept card swipes and
dips, these devices can circumvent all technical controls of a retail store,
enabling the undetected and widespread theft of customers’ credit card data.
Criminal activity involving these devices creates for the retailer a complex
range of risks, responsibilities, and uncertainties. For example:

What are your risks? And what are your reporting requirements?

How would you investigate?
●
How can you determine what damage was done and how much data was stolen?
●
Is it possible to proactively detect these devices before a data breach

Trend Micro Finds IoT Is a Hot Topic in Cybercriminal Underground
Cybercriminals from around the world are actively discussing how to compromise
connected devices, and how to leverage these devices for moneymaking schemes.
Trend Micro Research analyzed forums in the Russian, Portuguese, English,
Arabic, and Spanish language-based underground markets to determine how
cybercriminals are abusing and monetizing connected devices. The results reveal
that the most advanced criminal markets are Russian- and Portuguese-speaking
forums, in which financially driven attacks are most prominent. In these forums,
cybercriminal activity is focused on selling access to compromised devices –
mainly routers, webcams and printers – so they can be leveraged for attacks.
“We’ve lifted the lid on the IoT threat landscape to find that cybercriminals
are well on their way to creating a thriving marketplace for certain IoT-based
attacks and services,” said Steve Quane, executive vice president of network
defense and hybrid cloud security for Trend Micro. “Criminals follow the money –
always. The IoT market will continue to grow, especially with landscape changes
like 5G. While IoT attacks are still in their infancy, we also found criminals
discussing how to leverage industrial equipment for the same gain. Enterprises
must be ready to protect their Industry 4.0 environments.”

Pay Us With Gift Cards
Phishing attacks up, especially against SaaS and webmail services
Phishing attacks continued to rise into the summer of 2019 with
cybercrime gangs’ focus on branded webmail and SaaS providers remaining very
keen, according to the APWG report.
The
report also documents how criminals are
increasingly perpetrating business email compromise (BEC) attacks by using gift
card cash-out schemes.
The number of
phishing attacks observed in the second quarter of 2019 eclipsed the number
seen in the three quarters before. The total number of phishing sites detected
in April through June 2019 was 182,465. This topped the 180,768 seen in 1Q2019,
and was up notably from the 138,328 seen in the fourth quarter of 2018.
SaaS and branded Webmail providers were counted as the
most targeted sector with 36 percent of all phishing attacks recorded
targeting its constituents’ brands, according to APWG member MarkMonitor.
The report also demonstrates why employees should beware of requests for gift
cards and payroll account change requests at the workplace.
Gift cards were requested in 65 percent of BEC attacks during the second quarter
of 2019. About 20 percent of attacks requested payroll diversions, and 15
percent requested direct bank transfers.
“Nearly two-thirds of all BEC attacks
observed by the Agari Cyber Intelligence Division
requested that the target purchase gift cards and send them to the
attacker,” said Crane Hassold, Agari’s Senior Director of Threat Research.

Cyberattacks on IoT & SMBs Spiking 12 Times Over LY
The number of cybersecurity attacks events measured from January through June
was
twelve times higher when compared with the same period in 2018, an
increase largely driven by IoT-related traffic, according to the
Attack Landscape H1 2019 by F-Secure. In the first half of 2019, F-Secure's
global network of
honeypots measured more than triple the attack traffic of the previous
period, to a total of over 2.9 billion events.
"Our honeypots are decoy servers that we’ve set up in countries around the world
to gauge trends and patterns in what’s going on in the global cyber attack
landscape. We’ve configured them to look like actual servers, inviting the type
of traffic that hits actual servers. Honeypots are highly effective tools for
collecting information on the methods and target selection processes used by
modern attackers. They can also be a good source of malware samples and shell
scripts," says the
report.
"The largest share of attack traffic, 760 million events, was measured on the
Telnet protocol, which is used by IoT devices (compared with 611 million events
in the last report). Following that was 611 million events measured on UPnP,
which is also employed by IoT “things.” It’s also no surprise then, that malware
found in the honeypots was dominated by various versions of Mirai, which infects
IoT devices that use default credentials and co-opts those devices into botnets
that conduct DDoS attacks," says a F-Secure blog.

Winnipeg convenience store owners plead for police help to stop robberies
The owners of a small family-run Winnipeg convenience store are pleading with
the Winnipeg Police for help after a recent string of armed robberies
that they claim were carried out by the same person and has left them fearing
for their safety.
In one incident which occurred Aug. 27, the suspect allegedly
pointed a handgun at the store’s owner during a robbery. Police said that
incident prompted a large response including the Tactical Support Team, K9 Unit
and AIR1 helicopter but they were unable to locate the suspect.
“We’ve been asking (the police) a lot (for help) but we’re afraid that
something worse is going to happen,” said the owner’s son, who asked that
their names not be used nor the store’s location given out of fear for further
reprisals from the suspect who they believe lives in the area of their store.
The owners said they have owned the store since January 2015 and while they have
had incidents in the past – including a pair of seemingly unrelated break-ins
last September which prompted them to sleep in the store overnight to stop the
robberies – they have had nothing like these recent incidents.

A trans woman says she was forced to close her café in Val David last month
after it was repeatedly vandalized and amid a barrage of online reviews deriding
her gender identity and political views. The trouble started almost immediately
after she opened her vegan café last spring; people smashed bottles outside
the building and left dead animals at its doorstep, Sophia Banks says.
“Because the vandalism kept happening and the online stuff was just so non-stop,
I didn’t feel safe anymore, I didn’t feel like my staff was safe anymore. I was
losing money, I was going into work and having a panic attack every week. So we
decided to close the business.” The cost of closing up shop has saddled Banks
and her partner with $10,000 in debt, she said. But the couple set up a
crowdfunding page Tuesday and have raised more than $3,000 so far. Banks says
they’ll be moving to Nova Scotia where they may open a
farmer’s market.

A shooting at CrossIron Mills mall led to chaos Monday night, with customers
sent scrambling for safety and police still hunting for a suspect as of Monday
night. Dozens and dozens of mall visitors ran for their cars shortly after 7
p.m. when gunshots were heard. Airdrie RCMP quickly received a call reporting
shots fired at the mall in Balzac, just north of Calgary, leading to a large
response from RCMP and Calgary police on the ground and in the air. “Reports
indicated that one male suspect shot another male,” said Cpl. Gina Slaney. “That
male is currently in the hospital with serious injuries. The male suspect fled
the scene.”

Whitby, ON: Identity theft and fraud scheme thwarted by Home Depot employees
Whitby Home Depot employees stopped a fraud and identity theft scam. Durham
police say on Saturday, two men used fake ID’s to open Home Depot store credit
accounts at the Cobourg store. They then made large purchases using those credit
cards. Investigators say later that day, the men tried to return the items
without a receipt at the Victoria Street Home Depot in Whitby. Staff got
suspicious and called police, who found fake a drivers license and social
insurance card in their vehicle. Two Toronto men, Kwabena Ansere and Randy Amofa,
were arrested and are now facing several charges.

Google, Microsoft Workers Join Amazon’s in Walkout on Climate
The Sept. 20 walkouts, announced by employee groups on Twitter, are an offshoot

PayCode, a service that allows consumers
to make purchases using cash, in the U.S. To use PayCode, customers select the
PayCode payment option on eligible purchases at checkout. To use Amazon Cash,

$67K theft ring targeted stores at popular Northside shopping center
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Five people are accused in a five-month-long retail
theft ring at a popular Jacksonville shopping center, according to police
records.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said it counted a total of 44 thefts between
March and August, with a total loss of more than $67,000, at stores at the River
City Marketplace on the Northside near the Jacksonville International Airport.
"We don’t give crooks enough credit for doing their due diligence and figuring
out how they can steal from you and how they can rob you. This is how these
rings become successful until they’re caught," said News4Jax crime and safety
expert Ken Jefferson.
A 22-page police report obtained by News4Jax is heavily redacted as far as which
stores were hit, but one of the 11 stores was named Best Buy.
According to the report, nearly $3,000 worth of Fitbit watches were stolen March

St. Helena, CA: Jewelry Store Burglary Tied To Chilean Crime Ring
Police in St. Helena said Tuesday they have tied the burglary of a local jewelry
store to a Chilean group involved in similar crimes around the United States and
Canada. During the hours of darkness July 7-8, Padis Jewelry Store in St.
Helena, was the target of "an elaborate and well-calculated burglary that
resulted in a large amount of jewelry being stolen," according to St. Helena
police Lt. Chris Hartley. At about 3 a.m. July 8, a St. Helena police officer
spoke with a woman he spotted behind Padis Jewelry Store. The officer had his
body camera activated and recorded the conversation, which provided St. Helena
police with an unnamed suspect who was later identified as Massiel Mondaca,
Hartley said. Mondaca was ultimately arrested in New York state on suspicion of
burglary and theft charges after St. Helena PD worked alongside the FBI and
neighboring agencies to identify her using the body-camera footage as well as
photos and contacts. Under interrogation by the FBI, Mondaca confessed to her
involvement in the Padis burglary and named her three accomplices. The three men
are in custody on an immigration hold in San Bernardino, where they are awaiting
deportation to Chile.

Miami, FL: $80,000 Wig Heist Caught on Camera in Miami Gardens
The owner of a Miami Gardens store says thieves stole tens of thousands of
dollars worth of wigs during a smash-and-grab burglary that was caught on camera
early Tuesday. The incident happened at Prime Wholesale Beauty Supply - Prime
Trading International. Surveillance footage showed the thieves used a U-Haul
truck to smash through the door of the business. Once inside, they stole between
$70,000 to $80,000 worth of high-end wigs, the owner said.

Little Rock, AR: Texas men jailed in Best Buy burglary case
Two Texas men were arrested Tuesday morning after using a saw to cut a hole in
the door of a Best Buy and filling up a shopping cart with laptops. North Little
Rock Police were called to a burglary where Cedrick Earl Garland, 27; Isaiah
Anthony Johnson, 26, both of Houston, had used a saw to cut a hole in the
loading dock door of Best Buy. Just inside the hole in the store's door,
officers found a shopping cart loaded up with Apple laptops and the saw
investigators believe the men used to cut through the door, the report said.

Greenfield, WI: Update: Video Released: 4 jailed, accused of stealing $3,700 in
Kohl’s merchandise, leading officers on pursuit
Dash cameras captured the quick start and end to a police pursuit in Greenfield
Monday, Sept. 16 -- leading to potential felony charges against four people.
Greenfield police said three adults and a child stole more than $3,700 in
merchandise from the Kohl's store near 84th and Layton Avenue. Officers
responded around 7 p.m., and learned the individuals fled through an emergency
exit.
Officers immediately gave chase and conducted a PIT maneuver, ending the pursuit
and the risk to the public from the reckless driving.

Manatee County deputies are investigating a possible murder after a man was
found dead inside a store. Early Wednesday morning, detectives said the body of
one adult male was found inside the Green Galaxy Smoke Shop, located at 3212 1st
Street West in Bradenton.

Oceanside, Long Island, NY: Teens took video instead of helping fatally stabbed
youth at strip mall
A 16-year-old high school student fatally stabbed in a fight with other youths
over a girl in an Oceanside strip mall lay dying on the sidewalk as dozens of
teens recorded the stabbing on their smartphones instead of helping, Nassau
police said Tuesday. The slain boy, identified as Khaseen Morris, was stabbed
once in the chest on Monday afternoon in the parking lot of the mall, where
students from nearby Oceanside High School congregated before and after school.
Morris, who would have turned 17 next month, died just before midnight Monday at
South Nassau Communities Hospital, police said. Some 50 to 70 youths were at the
strip mall at the time of the stabbing, and many of them, according to police,
whipped out their smartphones and recorded Morris being stabbed and bleeding
profusely as he lay on the sidewalk. The students later circulated the footage
on social media including Snapchat.

San Jose, CA: Owner died in San Jose adult toy shop fire he is suspected of
setting
The evicted owner of a troubled adult novelty shop has been confirmed as the
person who died in a fire at his downtown store over the weekend, which
authorities believe he ignited himself after a public bout of rage. Pirtpal
Singh, 33, was identified Tuesday by the Santa Clara County Medical
Examiner-Coroner’s Office as the victim of the three-alarm blaze Sunday at the
Craze 4 Toys Adult Superstore. Officers were called to the site around 5:20 p.m.
Sunday for a burglary report involving a man matching Singh’s description who
was wielding a sledgehammer and yelling threats. By the time police arrived, he
had apparently broken into his store through a side entry, as the front doors
were locked due to his eviction about a week earlier. Officers saw movement
inside and determined that the man had gone into a basement. Within 15 minutes
of the initial police call, an officer said that the man had “turned on some
sort of gas device and threw it through the opening into the side of the
building.” Because of the potential sledgehammer threat, firefighters primarily
battled the fire from the outside. After bringing the fire under control that
evening, firefighters entered the building and found Singh’s body in the
basement.

Erie, PA: Pizza Hut Employee Shot in Shoulder Recalls Murder of Co-Worker; Luis
Rodriguez, 48, faces first-degree murder in the November 2018 shooting
Prosecutors called a murder inside an Erie restaurant "two minutes of pure
terror" during opening statements Tuesday as the trial started for Luis
Rodriguez. Investigators said he was dating the victim - Alicia Stalheim, 25 -
who worked at the restaurant. Another employee who worked there - Ashleigh
Fuhrman - was also shot. She took the stand Tuesday as a key witness She said
Stahlheim returned from a delivery and told her her boyfriend, Rodriguez, was
there with a gun, and Fuhrman should call 911. Fuhrman said she started calling
when Rodriguez pointed a gun at her stomach. She told him not to shoot because
she was pregnant. Rodriguez did not shoot her, but Fuhrman said he then went
into the kitchen where she believed Stalheim was and fired the gun. Fuhrman
testified she went outside, and Rodriguez shot her in the shoulder. She peaked
inside the kitchen, saw Stalheim unresponsive on the floor, left and heard two
more gunshots.

Des Peres, MO: Off-duty Officer fires shot at Shoplifting suspects at West
County Mall
Police in Des Peres are looking for two suspected shoplifters who assaulted a
store a manager at the West County Center on Tuesday. Authorities responded to
West County Center just after 12:40 p.m. Tuesday after receiving calls of a shot
fired. They learned one shot had been fired in the garage at the mall. Police
from the Des Peres Department of Public Safety were initially investigating if
the shooting was accidental in nature. However, police soon learned an off-duty
officer from another jurisdiction fired the shot. The off-duty officer told
police he witnessed the shoplifting and assault of the store manager and
attempted to apprehend the two suspects. The off-duty officer identified himself
as law enforcement and instructed the pair to stop. The suspects ran to the
parking garage and the off-duty officer again identified himself. The suspects
got into a small black car and attempted to speed off. The off-duty officer
pulled out his gun and fired a single round at the vehicle. The suspect vehicle
struck a car and eventually got away. At present, the department that the
off-duty officer works for is leading its own investigation to make sure their
officer followed policy.

Santa Ana, CA: Man Taken Into Custody After walking into 7-Elevan with rifle;
Fled and Barricaded himself in an Auto Body Shop
Officers took a man into custody on the roof of a store in Santa Ana after an
hours long standoff Tuesday. Police responded to reports of a man with a long
gun at a 7-Eleven store and chased him briefly before he ran into an auto shop
in the area of 1st Street near Harbor Boulevard, Santa Ana Police Department
Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said. Employees were evacuated from the business and from
surrounding shops, according to Bertagna. Police said the man was seen going in
and out of the shop several times as officers surrounded the location and tried
to communicate with him. He was ultimately taken into custody more than four
hours later by a team of officers who were waiting for him when he tried to
escape through the roof.

Agreeing to give a reference on someone is a serious obligation and
responsibility because that executive is now depending on you to provide a
favorable account of their work performance. Most often executives who ask you
don't ask what are you going to say about my weaknesses or mistakes. They
naturally assume that your long-term friendship and desire to see them succeed
will rule the day and in some cases they're legitimately right. However, when
making this commitment you also have a responsibility to make sure you don't
overextend your support and help put them in a position to fail. And if the
executive conducting the reference is extremely thorough, then you will be
reviewing the executive's weaknesses and strengths.
