Ex-Regional AP Leader's Murder Case
(Update) Gwinnett County, GA: Duluth man found guilty of 19-year-old woman's 2022 murder in Flowery Branch
A Gwinnett County jury convicted a Duluth man for fatally stabbing a 19-year-old woman after a dispute over money. Timothy James Krueger, 51, was found guilty Friday of malice murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault for the June 16, 2022, stabbing death of Sarai Llanos Gomez. The jury deliberated for two hours before returning a verdict.

According to the prosecution, Krueger requested an escort on the night of June 16, 2022, and a different woman was sent to his home than the one he wanted. At some point after Llanos Gomez arrived, a dispute erupted over the amount of pay she received. Krueger, having been robbed before by an escort, became agitated. Llanos, who was much smaller than Krueger, grabbed a knife from the kitchen and tried to leave the house.

Krueger disarmed her of the knife, stabbing her in the back and then repeatedly all over her body before finally slitting her throat, according to investigators. He then cut off Llanos Gomez’s clothes, wrapped her body in a blanket, and put the body in his car. Investigators say he took the body to the wooded area of a Hall County residential area where he dumped the remains.

Homeowners in the Hall County neighborhood discovered Llanos Gomez’s body four days later and called police. Investigators were able to identify Llanos Gomez and used cell phone activity to place her at Krueger’s home. Police matched a suspect's vehicle recorded on a Hall County resident's Ring camera to Krueger’s car, and he confessed to killing Llanos Gomez, although in court he claimed self-defense.

According to LinkedIn, Krueger has been in the loss prevention industry for 20+ years, most recently as Regional Asset Protection Leader for Ascena Retail Group. Throughout his career, he has held roles with Justice, Michaels, and Musicland.

Krueger will be sentenced at a later date fox5atlanta.com

RILA Teams Up with International Association of Chiefs of Police
'Addressing under-reporting of retail crime and deepening collaboration'

New Retail, Law Enforcement Partnership to Combat Crime
The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) and the International Association of Chiefs of Police recently announced a partnership to address retail crime. Together, RILA and IACP will develop educational resources, facilitate information sharing and enhance collaboration between leading retailers and law enforcement agencies to combat organized retail crime, prolific theft and disorder, and restore vibrancy to communities across the country.

Central to the RILA-IACP partnership is addressing under-reporting of retail crime and deepening collaboration between retailers and law enforcement. RILA and IACP will work together to develop training, best practices, resources, and guidebooks for retailers and law enforcement on retail crime topics.

“Through our work with the Vibrant Communities Initiative, retailers and law enforcement have experienced firsthand the power of collaboration in addressing complex community challenges like organized retail crime. As we broaden our ecosystem of stakeholders committed to working together in the fight against retail crime, IACP represents a vital partner in this groundbreaking effort to restore vibrancy to our communities,” said RILA Senior EVP of Retail Operations Lisa LaBruno. “We’re confident that through this partnership, both retailers and police leadership will find value in our collective resources and expertise and the result will be a united and effective community front against retail crime.”

“Perpetrators of Organized Retail Crime often move from store to store, across jurisdictions, stealing anything from everyday commodities to high-end merchandise. Operating across multiple jurisdictions makes it difficult for any single law enforcement agency to recognize the extent of their operations and highlights the need for cooperation between police agencies and retailers,” said IACP President Wade Carpenter. “We look forward to working with RILA to develop new resources and training that will allow our combined memberships to successfully combat this growing challenge.”  rila.org

Doing Away With Bar Codes to Fight Self-Checkout Theft?
Walmart quietly rolls out new way to curb theft at self-checkout
Walmart has quietly rolled out a new feature at its stores that is beneficial for paying customers, but bad news for thieves. In a recent TikTok video, which has amassed over 200,000 views, a Walmart customer showed herself scanning Great Value items through a self-checkout machine at Walmart without using a barcode.

The discovery comes after Walmart partnered with Digimarc, which is the company that’s behind the new feature, to innovate its barcodes for $3 million a year. In 2022, Walmart expanded its partnership with the tech company in order to “help further optimize store operations.”

According to Digimarc’s website, the technology involves embedding codes that are “invisible to the human eye” on product packaging, which makes it easier be detected at self-checkout machines.

“The scanning speed goes up significantly according to Digimarc technology partner Datalogic,” said Digimarc in a press release. “Hunting for barcodes during the scanning process becomes unnecessary, which eases the self-scanning for customers. The imaging cameras can also pick up several products at the same time.”

Retail theft can often be tied to self-checkout machines where shoppers can simply neglect properly scanning items by hiding the barcode from sensors. According to a recent survey by LendingTree, it found that 15% of consumers have purposely stolen an item at self-checkout, and only 33% were caught. Also, 21% of consumers said they’ve accidentally taken an item while using self-checkout.

So it is no surprise that Walmart is making it easier for self-checkout machines to detect items customers may be scanning, especially since the company loses about $3 billion per year due to theft, according to a recent report for Gitnux. msn.com

Walmart Works With Police to Fight Theft
Police partnering with big box stores to combat retail theft
The Port St. Lucie Police Department (PSLPD) has partnered with Walmart to be proactive in their approach to retail theft. Representatives from the chain store met with police on Wednesday, working together to limit a growing problem.

“Over the past year, we have identified an uptick in larceny, and it is one of our biggest increases in crime," said PSLPD's Deputy Chief Marc DiMeo. "Retail theft is the largest contributor to an increase in larcenies.”

“The strategies that we have implemented is one of presence and deterrence. You’ll see more officers in and around the Walmarts," he told CBS12 News Thursday. "Our officers are going in, they’re doing foot patrols, they’re walking around the stores, they’re spending time over in the cash register area.”

Walmart sent the following statement on the partnership CBS12 News: “We’re focused on taking steps to protect our associates, customers, and merchandise. We appreciate law enforcement’s partnership in this industry-wide challenge.”

The deputy chief says the retail giant is taking extra steps to help as well.

“On top of cameras in the store and signage, they’re looking to add some uniformed security in some of their stores," he remarked. "They’re also looking to have increased signage and increased employees over in the self-checkout areas.”  cw34.com

Grocery Store Mass Shooting Trial Update
(Update) Boulder Mass Shooting Trial Focuses on Accused Gunman’s Mental State

Lawyers for the accused gunman are using the state’s insanity defense, arguing that he was mentally ill at the time of the 2021 shooting that left 10 people dead at a supermarket.

It has been more than three years since a gunman rampaged through a grocery store in Boulder, Colo., killing 10 people before surrendering and being taken into the parking lot, bleeding from his leg and asking to speak with his mother.

The man charged in the 2021 attack, Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, was 21 at the time and has been in custody ever since. But he is going on trial only now in a somewhat unusual case that has little to do with whether he carried out the killings — his lawyers do not dispute that he did — and everything to do with his mental state at the time of the crime.

Mr. Alissa, now 24, has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, setting up a battle between prosecutors and defense lawyers over whether he is responsible for the crimes. A jury will ultimately decide the matter, and its verdict will determine whether Mr. Alissa is sentenced to life in prison or confined indefinitely to a state mental institution nytimes.com

Is Your Safety Culture in Trouble?
4 Causes of Safety Culture Problems
Nearly every workplace has safety culture problems. And with good reason—workplace cultures grow slowly and can be killed quickly. Four factors can cause particular trouble for safety cultures and lead to negative attitudes towards safety and increased resistance to safety initiatives.

Don’t provide resources for success: Employees need to receive a few key resources for any safety initiative. Knowledge and skills are two big ones. After all, you can’t expect people to follow safety procedures if they don’t know the proper way to do them or lack the skills to actually carry them out.

Lack of leadership commitment: Demonstrating commitment at all levels of the organization is an important cultural factor and there’s no better way for leaders to show that they value safety than by arriving at training sessions with a positive attitude. It can be hard for safety managers to convince their bosses to show up, but it’s worth making the effort—because seeing upper management roll up their sleeves can have tremendous value on safety culture.

Actions and ideals don’t match up: It can take years to regain the trust of employees once safety promises are broken and in the meantime, the organizational safety culture will suffer. So make sure that your organization is able to follow through on its stated safety goals. A human factors framework can help to tie it all together.

Safety feedback problems: A major step in helping employees feel listened to is to actively solicit their feedback. In many cases, some safety feedback has already been collected but there are many unexpected sources of safety feedback that can be used to better understand how employees view current safety measures. Keep in mind that gathering safety feedback isn’t enough on its own. If it’s not used properly, it can cause other safety culture problems. safestart.com

What's Fueling the Drugstore Downward Spiral?
‘My kids go to Costco now,’ and other reasons drugstores are hurting

These are tough days for pharmacy chains.

Rite Aid has closed more than 200 stores since filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2023 and announced plans in July to shut down more locations nationwide as it struggles to deal with creditors and lawsuits over opioid prescriptions.

Competitors CVS and Walgreens are also cutting costs and closing stores, reflecting challenges in the industry that have been brewing for years but have recently begun to accelerate, experts say. In June, Walgreens’ chief executive said about a quarter of the company’s 8,600 U.S. stores were underperforming and that a “significant number” of them could be closed.

Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid are not in identical financial positions, but all three are being forced to examine their footprint and business model as they deal with lowering margins and changing consumer trends.

Between the pressure on the front of the store plus the pressure on the pharmacy, it’s just getting harder and harder for these guys to operate,” said Brian Tanquilut, an industry analyst at Jefferies.

On the retail side, chain pharmacies are facing heavy competition from giants such as Amazon and Walmart, a drop in consumer spending and an increase in theft that can eat into profits, analysts said. On the pharmaceutical side, they’re seeing lower margins because of lower reimbursement rates for the drugs they provide to customers.  seattletimes.com

Big Lots files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy

The bargain-focused retailer said Nexus Capital Management has offered a $620 million stalking horse bid.

Big Lots on Monday filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Delaware. In court documents, Big Lots claimed liabilities and assets ranging from $1 billion to $10 billion. The company has received commitments for $707.5 million, including $35 million in new financing from its lenders.

Under a stalking horse agreement with Nexus Capital Management, the investment firm will acquire most of the company’s assets for $620 million. If Nexus is deemed the winning bidder, the transaction is expected to close during the fourth quarter.

CEO Bruce Thorn said Chapter 11 will enable the company to move forward with new owners, provide financial stability and allow the retailer to optimize its operational footprint retaildive.com

'Multibillion Dollar Gap' in the Cyber Insurance Market
Key cyber insurance stakeholders urge government to help close $900B in uncovered risk

Marsh McLennan and Zurich Insurance Group issued a white paper urging a public-private partnership to help tackle a growing coverage gap. The White House is working on a plan.

Marsh McLennan and Zurich Insurance Group on Thursday issued a call for government intervention to help resolve the growing risk of catastrophic cyber events and a multibillion dollar gap in terms of what the current insurance market can absorb.

The cyber insurance market has seen significant growth in recent years, and is expected to exceed $28 billion in gross written premiums in 2027, more than double the amount written in 2023, according to a whitepaper released by the firms Thursday.

However, the companies warn a risk protection gap of about $900 billion exists between insured losses and economic losses due to cyberattacks. Many small- to medium-sized businesses are either underinsured or carry no coverage to protect against such losses.

The whitepaper comes against the backdrop of rising concerns about the risk of a catastrophic cyber event. The IT security industry is still recovering from a massive outage in July when a faulty CrowdStrike software update led to an outage involving 8.5 million Microsoft Windows devices.  cybersecuritydive.com

CISOs Too Focused on Stopping Breaches Alone?
When Cyber Security Breaches Are Inevitable, It's Time To Call For A New Approach
AdvertisementDespite the hopeful purpose of this impressive community, we also felt compelled to host a session on a more troubling topic: how these same emerging technologies will supercharge cybersecurity threats. We asked thought leader and CISO of T-Mobile, Jeff Simon to facilitate this future of security discussion with an impressive list of very engaged tech execs.

Their interest in the subject was no surprise: The hyperscaling of cyberattacks in the cloud era is scary. According to research from Proofpoint, 94% of cloud customers were targeted at some point during every month of 2023. Of those targeted companies, 62% were successfully compromised. In the wrong hands, emerging technologies will increase the success rate of cyberattacks.

Coming out of that session, I followed up with a few of the radical innovators. The general sentiment was that successful hacks are now an inevitability, since the teams and tools at their disposal cannot scale to match the threat. “We need to start with the assumption that the system is already compromised,” says Ajay Waghray, CIO of PG&E Corporation, a California-based utility. “But my fear is most CISOs remain too narrowly focused on stopping breaches alone.”

So I dug a little deeper with Waghray to design a methodology to address this inevitability that any of us, particularly board members, can take to our technology leaders.  forbes.com

CISOs Struggling to Communicate Cyber-Risk
How CISOs Can Effectively Communicate Cyber-Risk

A proximity resilience graph offers a more accurate representation of risk than heat maps and risk registers, and allows CISOs to tell a complex story in a single visualization.

More than half of chief information security officers (CISOs) struggle to effectively communicate cyber-risk to their leadership teams, according to FTI Consulting. If you're part of this majority, you're not alone. I spend countless hours each month in conversation with CISOs, talking about their concerns and challenges. Time and again, I hear the same frustration: translating complex cyber-risks into a digestible narrative for leadership is an uphill battle.

The challenge is multifaceted:

1. CISOs are competing for attention in a sea of business risks. In many modern enterprise organizations, security teams exist alongside enterprise risk management (ERM) or governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) teams that track business risk holistically. Cyber concerns are just one item on a lengthy list of priorities, including financials, broader economic factors, geopolitics, climate issues, and personnel challenges.

2. Traditional risk communication tools aren't effective storytelling vehicles. When ERM or GRC teams review risk with leadership, they often present heat maps that reduce complexity, or risk registers that overwhelm with hundreds, if not thousands, of lines of content. In either case, the nuances of cyber-risk get lost in the data, which means that leaders are disconnected from the details that matter.

3. The stakes are higher than ever. With the average cost of a data breach reaching $4.88 million in 2024, the need for clear, compelling risk communication has never been more critical.  darkreading.com

Is Amazon Fueling Fake Taxi Scam?
Amazon rejects plea to stop selling taxi roof signs as cab scam spreads across Canada

Fake drivers swap passengers' debit cards, with $1.7M in losses reported in Toronto since June 2023

After a long day at a work event in July, Kathryn Kozody was relieved when she spotted a car with a lit-up taxi sign. She thought it was odd when the driver told her she'd have to pay her fare with a debit card. Still, a tired Kozody hopped in the car.

Nothing else seemed off — until the next day when she discovered that almost $2,000 was missing from her bank account. On top of that, her debit card had someone else's name on it. Kozody concluded that the taxi driver was a fraudster who, during the debit card transaction, recorded her PIN, stole her card and handed her back a fake.

It took Kozody about two weeks to get her money back from her bank, and she's still rattled by the experience. "It really felt like an invasion of privacy and a violation to be a victim of this scam," she said. "I really don't want it to happen to anybody else."

The taxi scam isn't new; Toronto and Montreal have been seeing it for years. But the crime is becoming more widespread.

This summer, police in Calgary, Edmonton and at least five cities in southern Ontario, including Kingston and Ottawa, posted warnings online that they had received multiple reports of the scam. Police and the Canadian Taxi Association say the fraudsters have a helping hand: with the click of a button, they can purchase a generic — but official looking — taxi roof sign on e-commerce sites like Amazon.

The taxi association has asked Amazon, by far Canada's most popular online shopping site, to stop making the roof signs so easily available.

"They do have a moral responsibility to at least sell the signs to individuals that are properly licensed," said association president Marc André Way.  cbc.ca

Revolutionizing E-Commerce
How AI Is Shaping Savings Strategies
The future of online retail is here, and for entrepreneurs in the e-commerce space—which is expected to reach $4.1 billion in 2024—harnessing the power of AI is becoming a game-changer. As the industry evolves, AI plays a crucial role in not only enhancing the shopping experience for consumers, but also providing entrepreneurs with innovative tools to stay competitive. However, a 2024 survey found that although half of U.S. adults expect AI to have a bigger role in the retail industry, only one-third of B2C organizations have fully integrated AI into their e-commerce operations.

With AI-driven tools, businesses can not only offer targeted promotions and dynamic pricing, but also help consumers effortlessly discover the best offers and discounts tailored to their needs, making shopping more efficient and satisfying. As AI advances, it promises to further revolutionize online retail by continually refining how deals are found and delivered, providing entrepreneurs with unparalleled opportunities to boost customer engagement and loyalty. forbes.com

Sometimes when you're moving so fast and dealing with the mistakes of the day, the frustration levels peak and one can tend to forget that sometimes you've just got to stop, listen and take a breath and maybe talk to a friend about it all. If it's a good friend, they'll bring you back into focus and make sure you don't react too aggressively and make the mistakes even worst. There aren't many friends like that nor ones that you can absolutely trust. But if you've got a couple, make sure you thank them as well for taking the time.
