NIST Calls For Comment of Ecommerce Security
In an effort to reduce online fraud, the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE), a subdivision of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), announced it is now accepting feedback on its draft exploring the ways in which multi-factor authentication can help to mitigate fraudulent online purchases.
 As was the case in Europe after retailers adopted chip-and-pin technologies, retailers in the US have seen a spike in ecommerce fraud. In fact, the US saw a 30% increase in online fraud and credit card theft during 2017.

The technology partners that collaborated on the project signed a cooperative research-and-development agreement and worked in a consortium with NIST to build the draft, NIST Special Publication 1800-17, Multifactor Authentication for E-Commerce. With the draft, retailers will able to successfully implement the example solutions by following the step-by-step guide. 

Collaborating with stakeholders in the retail sector, NCCoE has developed a draft that explores the use of multifactor authentication in a variety of risk-based scenarios. “In the project’s example implementations, if certain risk elements (contextual data related to the transaction) are exceeded that could indicate an increased likelihood of fraudulent activity during the online shopping session, the purchaser will be prompted to present another distinct authentication factor – something the purchaser has – in addition to the username and password,” NIST wrote.

The guide has been divided into three volumes for greater ease of use. Comments are currently open and can be submitted to NIST by 22 October 2018 by using this online form. infosecurity-magazine.com

R-CISC: Targeting the Supply Chain
Threat actors are increasingly targeting supply chain organizations to get around ever more hardened corporate perimeters, modifying their products to achieve a range of potential effects, such as cyber espionage, organizational disruption or demonstrable financial impact.

According to a recent report by the National Counterintelligence and Security Center (NCSC), software supply chain infiltration has already threatened critical infrastructure and is poised to imperil other sectors. China, Russia and Iran were cited as the most capable and active states involved in such economic subterfuge.
As attackers look for new ways to exploit computer networks via the privileged access given to technology providers, software supply chain vendors are increasingly becoming attractive targets. As such, software supply chain infiltration is one of the key threats that corporations must consider, and in particular, how software vulnerabilities are exploited.

In July 2018, hackers compromised a font package installed by a PDF editor app and used it to deploy a cryptocurrency miner on users’ computers. Hackers breached the cloud server infrastructure of a software company providing font packages as MSI files, which were offered to other software companies and ultimately downloaded by the PDF editor app. Because the PDF editor app was installed under system privileges, the malicious coinminer code hidden inside received full access to a user’s system.

In September 2017, a booby-trapped version of CCleaner, a computer-cleaning program, was used to infect millions of machines, to specifically target 18 companies to conduct espionage including Samsung, Asus, Intel, VMware, O2 and Fujitsu.

According to a recent report from CrowdStrike which surveyed 1,300 senior IT decision makers and security professionals in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the U.K., Australia, Japan, Germany and Singapore in April and May, two-thirds (66%) of respondents’ organizations have experienced some form of a software supply chain attack.

Conclusion
Supply Chain attacks are becoming increasingly common, and as such, organizations must pay close attention to the supply chain. Along with rigorously assessing the software supply chain suppliers they use, organizations must close the security gaps that are making them vulnerable to attack. MSSP Benchmark Survey: 90% of Retailers Use Event Monitoring Services
Retail organizations are increasingly outsourcing their security functions to MSSPs, a trend that appears likely to continue in the foreseeable future, according to the “2018 MSSP Benchmark Survey” from the Retail Cyber Intelligence Sharing Center (R-CISC).

Key findings from the R-CISC survey of chief information security officers (CISOs) across 45 retail organizations included:

● Quality of service/service-level agreements (SLAs) was the top MSSP decision-making factor, followed by price/value.
● 92 percent of respondents said the cost of developing and maintaining in-house talent and/or talent engagement and retention challenges were the top reasons for leveraging MSSP services.
● 90 percent choose MSSPs to provide event monitoring for IT infrastructure logs, firewalls and intrusion detection systems (IDS)/intrusion prevention systems (IPS).
● 36 percent expect their MSSP spending to increase, and 15 percent anticipate their MSSP spending will decrease.
● 23 percent expect to use an MSSP for threat intelligence and dark web monitoring services next year.

Cyber risks are evolving, and retail organizations cannot remain static, R-CISC indicated. However, annual managed security services investments can help these organizations keep pace with cyber risks. msspalert.com

Don't Be So Sure AI Is Cybersecurity's Silver Bullet
"To be fair, AI definitely has a few clear advantages for cybersecurity," wrote Tomas Honzak, director of security and compliance at Good Data, in a recent Dark Reading post. "In reality, like any technology, AI has its limitations."

One of these limitations is our reliance on information the AI has learned. It is clear that an AI has the same learning curve as a human intelligence: Both have to see something or make a mistake before it can learn. "Even when the malware is detected, security already has been compromised and damage might already have been done," Honzak pointed out.

Another important limitation of AI is that we view it only from the defenders' side, when in fact the same tools are available to the attackers.

"If you're using AI to better detect threats, there's an attacker out there who had the exact same thought," Honzak cautioned. "Where a company is using AI to detect attacks with greater accuracy, an attacker is using AI to develop malware that's smarter and evolves to avoid detection."

"Once attackers make it past the company's AI, it's easy for them to remain unnoticed while mapping the environment, behavior that a company's AI would rule out as a statistical error," Honzak said.

While the limitations detailed above may suggest a death knell for cybersecurity AI, that is not the final conclusion to draw. Just as AI needed IBM's Watson to make AI accessible, the development of AI for cybersecurity purposes continues.

I am hard pressed to come up with the “most important” lesson, as I feel that within our own ecosystem we constantly deal with new risks and are constantly learning new important lessons from those new risks. As most of you know, we are now living in a world where things are becoming more intricate and are moving at a much faster speed. Although technology is helping us to keep up, it is also helping the criminal minds and allowing them to move faster and hide in better places. It seems that not only are we dealing with better scams, we are also seeing more of them.

Complacency is one of our worst enemies and I think if I was asked to pick my most important lesson it would be to never become complacent. Always be open to new ideas and new ways of doing things and always update yourself on trending or new technology. I guess it sounds like I am stating the obvious here but you would be surprised how many folks fall into this trap and learn the hard way. I would also add that sharing information amongst colleagues/police agencies, etc. is one of the most valuable tools we have as security professionals and is one of the best ways to help all of us stay ahead of the game. The old days of not wanting to share data or information because of fears of divulging “company secrets” are long gone. Home Depot Canada attacked on social media for using hijabs in advertising; Some threaten to boycott store
An August 9 promotional video from the Canadian branch of retail chain The Home Depot featuring an orange-aproned employee wearing a hijab, ostensibly an example of the promotion of a diverse and well-trained work force. “Our specialized training programs and unlimited opportunities for advancement helped Sehrish go from cashier to talent acquisition specialist,” declares the retailer.

In the days that followed, social media users took to their keyboards to express their discontent. “Why do they always show someone with a tablecloth on their head?” one woman wrote. “They’re [expletive] hypocrites and slaves, obedient to their masters, to make an ad for Muslims,” another raged. Other Facebook users said they would boycott the store.

Toys “R” Us Canada had long been the company’s “jewel in the crown” and was far stronger than its American counterpart – even though the separately run entity always had less money – because it was much smaller and more nimble, she said. New Cyberfraud: Online Retailers Warned as Digital Skimmers Infest 800+ eCommerce Sites
A Ticketmaster data breach announced in late June was subsequently discovered to be part of a widespread digital card-skimming campaign by cybercriminals known as Magecart, whose malignant code has infiltrated more than 800 eCommerce sites worldwide. The new cyberfraud threat is particularly concerning in light of a new study that found the average cost per data breach has risen to $3.86 million. Chargebacks911, a leading dispute mitigation and loss prevention firm, advises eCommerce merchants to stay abreast of Magecart-related activity and other emerging cyberfraud risks, and to take proactive measures to combat these threats.

"Merchants have become almost numb to cyberfraud, but they cannot afford to ignore it. Cybercriminals are always finding new vulnerabilities to exploit," asserted Monica Eaton-Cardone, co-founder and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Chargebacks911. Defendants in $1.3M ticket-switching scam hitting Home Depot & Lowe's sentenced
ATLANTA: Charles Blackman, a/k/a Ralph Jones, and Quinton Williams were sentenced to federal prison by U.S. District Judge Amy Totenberg for altering the prices of merchandise, through an elaborate “ticket-switching scheme” at The Home Depot and Lowe’s on August 27, 2018.

"These defendants defrauded Home Depot and Lowe’s of merchandise valued in excess of $300,000 and $1 million, respectively,” said U.S. Attorney Byung J. “BJay” Pak. “Security measures at The Home Depot helped uncover and stop this scheme before they could steal more. It is unfortunate that the consumer pays the cost of these elaborate schemes in a higher cost of goods.”

“The U.S. Secret Service and our law enforcement partners work tirelessly to protect our nation’s electronic financial payment systems,” said Malcolm D. Wiley, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Secret Service, Atlanta Field Office.  “Today’s sentences should serve as a reminder that criminals will not get away with using point of sale terminals to fund their criminal activities.”

According to U.S. Attorney Pak, the charges, and other information presented in court: Blackman and his associates allegedly switched or altered the prices of merchandise by changing the Universal Product Code (UPC), so the items could be purchased at a lower price and then returned for the actual, higher retail price. They used false information and fake identifications to further their fraud. Their alleged scheme was to cheat The Home Depot and Lowe’s out of the hundreds of thousands of dollars to be made on the price difference after returning the merchandise.

Charles Blackman, a/k/a Ralph Jones, 58, of Atlanta, Georgia was sentenced to three years, one month in prison, to be followed by two years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $1,269,621.00 to The Home Depot and Lowe’s.

Quinton Williams, 52, of Atlanta, Georgia, was sentenced to time served in prison, to be followed by two years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $269,515.00 to The Home Depot. justice.gov

Tenn: Amaurys Mendez Campanon, of Miami, Sentenced to Serve 57 Months for $21K CC & Gift Card Fraud
Campanon and Odemnis Prats Leiva purchased credit and debit card account information pertaining to numerous persons without their knowledge. They used the fraudulently obtained information to re-encode unloaded gift cards, which they shoplifted from various retail establishments. The re-encoded cards were then used to purchase loaded gift cards and other consumer items at various retail establishments across east Tennessee and elsewhere. justice.gov

Detroit, MI: CVS robbery may be linked to Detroit theft ring; targeting Retailers and Pharmacies in 5 States
The two suspects who stole prescription medication last Saturday afternoon from the CVS Pharmacy in Coldwater and the Family Fare Pharmacy in Albion maybe part of a crime crew based in Detroit. The Detroit News reported nearly three weeks ago that a $1,000 reward was being offered by Crime Stoppers of Michigan for 24-year-old Deaire Deshawn Brown, who is accused of leading a crime crew that has targeted pharmacies and other businesses in five states. According to the News, investigators think Brown leads a group that has been linked to 78 thefts. Crime Stoppers says they have no weapons and use minimal force. They also switch up vehicles on almost every theft. wtvbam.com

Sonora, CA: Traffic Stop leads to Walmart merchandise, Counterfeit Money, Fake Credit cards and stolen ID info
Just before 2 a.m. this morning, a deputy stopped the vehicle for the missing plates and discovered after a records check that the driver, Marc South was a convicted felon on searchable probation. His passenger, Gloria Deleon also informed the deputy she had drug paraphernalia. A vehicle search turned up heroin, hypodermic needles and ammunition along with printers, blank paper, forged 100 and 50 dollar bills, an iron, and other items used to manufacture fake currency. Deputies also discovered books containing access card numbers for which names, security codes, and expiration dates were also listed. Sgt. Benson adds that after finding several receipts from the Sonora Walmart, deputies contacted the store to see if the couple used counterfeit bills there. After checking their recorded data, Walmart officials confirmed the store had one fake 100 dollar bill and another fake 50 dollar bill that were passed by South and Deleon. mymotherlode.com

Chico, CA: Three arrested for shoplifting from Chico T.J. Maxx; ‘zip gun’ found in get-a-way car
Chico Police dispatch received a report of a theft of a large amount of clothing by three suspects at T.J. Maxx at 2540 Notre Dame Blvd. on Tuesday. T.J. Maxx Loss Prevention Officers provided Chico Police officers with suspect descriptions and a description of a getaway vehicle. When officers found the getaway vehicle and attempted to detain the individuals, they say two suspects ran from the vehicle. Police say the vehicle was not placed into park and jumped the curb, crashing into a Burger King sign. Officers recovered more stolen items from T.J. Maxx within the vehicle. Hackettstown, NJ: Lowe’s Associate charged with $14,000 theft
On May 7, 2018, the Hackettstown Detective Bureau investigated a report of an employee that conducted fraudulent transactions at Lowe's in Hackettstown. The investigation revealed Caroline Damus, 31, conducted numerous false return transactions at Lowe's between Aug. 24, 2017 and March 13, 2018. The transactions totaled $14,033.92, according to the release. Police say Damus used the money to purchase gift cards at Lowe's. She was charged on Aug. 24, 2018 with theft by unlawful taking and was released pending a court appearance. wfmz.com

Los Angeles, CA: Dine and Dash Dater arraigned on Grand Theft Charges, could face 10 years
Paul Gonzales pleaded not guilty to extortion, grand theft and other charges stemming from his repeated “dine-and-dash” dates with women he contacted on dating apps. His alleged crimes go back to 2016 and apparently ended earlier this year, when one of his latest victims was left to cover the $130 check for a shrimp and filet mignon dinner at Smitty’s Bar in Pasadena. Prosecutors say Gonzales, 45, has left eight women with bills totaling about $1,000. cbslocal.com
