The U.S. Crime Surge
The Retail Impact

LA's Shoplifting Crisis By the Numbers
How bad are the ‘mob’ thefts at department stores?

Incidents may be limited, but large Los Angeles retailers get hit by shoplifting and other crimes

From 2010–2022, the highest monthly number of department store crime reports in the city was the 369 recorded in January 2016. But that figure has been eclipsed in each of the last six months according to publicly available Los Angeles Police Department data.

The peak occurred in March, when there were 477 department store crime reports, and the count stayed above 400 for the next three months. In July there were 385 incidents.

Forming a task force

The situation has prompted a crisis-level response. Mayor Karen Bass called the Nordstrom robbery “completely unacceptable.” Last Thursday, she and a coalition of city and county political and law enforcement leaders announced the formation of a multi-agency task force.

Separately, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that he would triple California Highway Patrol resources that combat organized retail theft in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles retailers are suffering losses like never before. From Jan. 1–July 31, there were 2,912 reports of crime in department stores. That already exceeds the full annual count every year since 2017 (figures of course dropped during the pandemic).

It is also 123% more than the 1,307 department store crime reports in the first seven months of last year. The count in the equivalent period in 2019 was 1,561.

Mostly petty theft, but not always

Most department store crimes are non-violent in nature. According to police data, 2,071 of the incidents in the city this year, or 71% of the total, were petty theft shoplifting, with stolen merchandise worth less than $950. In another 351 incidents the shoplifting was classified as a felony, meaning the value of stolen goods exceeds $950.

However, a number of incidents have been more dangerous. There were 114 robbery reports at department stores from Jan. 1–July 31, and 47 instances of battery. Nine crimes involved aggravated assault or assault with a deadly weapon. xtown.la

ORC Continues to be Top Focus of Retail Associations
Combating Organized Retail Crime Act the focus of Council of State Retail Associations Meeting
Last week, NRF team members attended a meeting of the Council of State Retail Associations (CSRA) in San Diego. This annual event brings together retailers, industry stakeholders and the state retail associations to share insights and collaborate on a path forward for advocacy on behalf of retailers in communities nationwide.

State retail association executives play an important role for retailers large and small by listening, engaging, educating and advocating on their behalf. A focus of this year’s meeting was organized retail crime and the need for passage of the Combating Organized Retail Crime Act. Another priority discussed at CSRA was the need for swipe fee reform. Please contact your members of Congress and ask them to reform the payments system through passage of the Credit Card Competition Act. nrf.com

Crime Crisis Engulfs Nation's Capital
Robberies Up 63% | Property Crimes Up 29% | Homicides Up 27% | Burglaries Up 3%

DC continues experiencing soaring crime rates despite council chairman saying 'there is no crime crisis'

Violent crime has increased 38% over the past year in nation's capital

Washington, D.C.'s crime rates have continued to skyrocket despite its city council chairman proclaiming earlier this year there is no crime crisis in the nation's capital.

Democratic D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson told the House Committee on Oversight in late March that while there are considerable concerns regarding crime, residents should not worry.

"With regard to crime, yes, there is considerable concern," Mendelson said. "But while perception is important, the reality is less concerning. Let me be clear: People should feel safe, and it is a problem that many residents of the district don't.

According to data from the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, though, almost all crimes have soared from this time last year. As of Aug. 18, the nation's capital has experienced a 63% increase in robberies, a 27% increase in homicides, a 14% increase in sexual abuse and a 4% increase in assault with a deadly weapon.

Violent crimes as a whole have skyrocketed 38%, the data shows.

The city has also witnessed property crimes increase by 29% over the past year, including a 167% increase in arson, a 115% increase in motor vehicle theft and a 3% increase in burglaries.

The crime stats over the past year are also trending in the opposite direction they had been from 2021 to 2022. During that time, there was a dip in every crime category besides motor vehicle theft, which saw an 8% increase, according to the data. foxnews.com

CHI Overall Crime Up 34% - Serious Crimes Spiking - 'Out of Control Violence' - 1,000 Police Vacancies
Chicago has a new police chief, what’s his plan to fix the city’s crime problem?
First and foremost is a serious discussion of what Snelling believes are the resources and support the police need to be effective. The mayor’s most ardent supporters are advocates for police defunding.

Rebuilding police strength is not about providing more funding as much as it’s about allowing CPD to fill its vacancies and deploy officers more effectively. While carrying 1,000 police officer vacancies last year saved the city at least $150 million, a record $210 million was spent on police overtime as escalating crime and police shortages forced the city to resort expensive overtime.

Outline the legislative support and solutions needed to make the city safer

Details on overall policing strategy

The City Council needs clear answers on other issues critical to the police having the resources and support needed to contain and reverse the crime pandemic plaguing the city.

Crime is spiking – now’s the time for clarity and action

While homicides and shootings have dropped slightly in 2022, that positive comes with two sobering caveats. First, it is consistent with a national trend and decidedly not a reflection of anything Chicago is doing. Second, it is a statistical dodge of the fact that overall crime is up this year by 34%, according to the Chicago Police Department’s latest data.

There were 19,403 more “serious crimes” in 2022 than 2021 and serious crimes through the end of June are up 10,143 over the same six-month period in 2022. Johnson’s primary focus is on “root causes,” with little-to-no emphasis on containing today’s out-of-control violence. It’s a strategy doomed to fail. Root causes are critical to a larger vision for public safety. But the city needs a serious containment strategy now. Snelling’s confirmation hearings should be a discussion of that containment strategy. illinoispolicy.org

Youth crime is on the rise in Chicago – and CTU’s school closures may be to blame for the trend
The University of Chicago Crime Lab recently reported a 50% increase in shooting victimizations of school-aged youth 17 years and younger since 2019. Over 90% of victims were not enrolled in school. Earlier analysis by the Crime Lab documented 8% of those arrested were for homicides, 9% for shootings, 32% for robberies and 49% for carjackings were youth 17 years and younger.

No single act was more responsible for keeping students out of school than the closing of Chicago Public Schools campuses for 17 months beginning in 2020. CPS has lost 87,000 students since 2010, when a radical wing of the Chicago Teachers Union took power. illiniospolicy.org

1,000 Net New Stores Across U.S. This Year
A Bright Spot in Commercial Real Estate: Retail Shops

New store openings remain strong, overcoming inflation and interest-rate challenges

Retailers are on track to open 1,000 net new stores in the U.S. this year as retail availability hits record lows, in fresh signs of the sector’s resilience despite turmoil in commercial real estate.

Landlords say demand for retail space has remained robust this year, defying inflation pressures, high interest rates and liquidations including Bed Bath & Beyond and Christmas Tree Shops.

Retail’s strength is largely the result of a sharp drop in retail construction since the 2008-09 financial crisis, which allowed the oversupplied sector to digest its existing real estate. Retailers, meanwhile, started using online sales data and analytics technology to pinpoint locations for successful stores.

Also, predictions that internet sales would wipe out physical retail failed to materialize. Digitally native companies are opening bricks-and-mortar locations after reaching the limits of online customer acquisition. Shoppers flocked back to stores and restaurants as pandemic restrictions eased.

As of mid-August, retailers had announced plans to open nearly 4,500 new locations while shutting about 3,500, according to advisory and research firm Coresight Research. Nationwide, the rate of available retail space fell to 4.8% in the second quarter, the lowest level in the 18 years the data has been tracked by real-estate-services firm CBRE. wsj.com

Can New Ikea Store Curb San Francisco's Retail Exodus?
Stores are leaving San Francisco. Ikea is opening there this week
Ikea is opening a new store in downtown San Francisco Wednesday, bucking the trend of retailers closing in the city. Ikea will be the anchor tenant for a new mixed-use development on Market Street with retail, offices, restaurants and entertainment.

City leaders are hopeful that the home furniture store will draw shoppers to downtown San Francisco and support other businesses in the area at a time of store closures and rising public safety concerns.

Ikea will be the first retailer to open in the new development. Its three-level, 52,000-square-foot store will showcase 27 different room options for apartments and smaller city homes for customers. Shoppers will be able to buy and take home smaller products, but bigger furniture items like couches and bookshelves will only be available to order for delivery.

“The arrival of @IKEA is great news for the City’s economic recovery that will bring local jobs and excitement to the Union Square area,” San Francisco Mayor London Breed said earlier this month.

Several attention-grabbing videos of store robberies and other incidents in San Francisco have led to public safety concerns. While violent crime statistics in San Francisco have remained relatively low in recent years, property crimes have risen since 2020, according to San Francisco Police Department data.

Activity this spring in downtown San Francisco, as measured by mobile phone use, was 68% below its pre-pandemic levels, the largest decline of any US city.

Since Ikea acquired the property in 2020, retail closures in San Francisco have spiked and the city’s challenges have escalated. Around 40 stores have closed in San Francisco’s Union Square area since 2020, according to a tally from Coresight, a market research firm. cnn.com

61% Of Officers Say Response Times Are Suffering
Lexipol survey uncovers alarming staffing shortages and stress levels reported by first responders
DALLAS - First responders are facing significant staffing and mental health challenges that pose a serious threat to their wellbeing and the communities they serve, according to Lexipol’s new Stressed & Short-Staffed: Challenges Facing First Responders and the Impact on Community Safety report. The findings, which come from Lexipol Media Group’s annual “What Cops/Firefighters/Paramedics Want” surveys of 9,400 first responders, expose the degree to which a large number of first responders today are under heightened stress.

As the chart to the right shows, short staffing also results in a lack of time for training, an increase in response time to high-priority calls and a lower likelihood of performing duties due to reduced backup. Staffing issues are also leading to serious safety concerns, both for officers and the public.

Officers have less time for training, response time on both low- and high-priority calls is increasing, and officers are increasingly being pulled off important specialty assignments to fill in for patrol duty police1.com

'The Dollar Store Invasion' Debate
Is Cumberland County experiencing a 'dollar store invasion'? What it means for food access
The Cumberland County area has seen three new dollar stores in the last year, bringing the total number to 30.

The proliferation of dollar stores in Cumberland County — at least eight have opened in the past decade — could spell bad news for attracting new grocery stores and keeping existing grocery stores, of which there are about 60.

Dollar stores exploit communities of color and rural areas for profit, while forcing closures of full-service grocery stores and worsening food insecurity, the Institute for Local Reliance’s February report, “The Dollar Store Invasion,” suggests.

“Through predatory tactics, the dollar chains are killing off grocery stores and other local businesses, leaving communities with fewer jobs, diminished access to basic goods, and dimmer prospects for overall well-being,” the report reads. fayobserver.com

U.S. & UK See Retail Job Postings Decline
Signal: Retail job postings in the US shrink 21% year over year in 2023
Approximate retail jobs postings between 1 January and 16 August in the US stood at 1,867,562 – a decline of 21% from the previous year – according to GlobalData’s analytics. In the UK, there was a more moderate decline of 7%, with retail job postings shrinking from 198,430 in 2022 to 183,743 in 2023.

This contraction in retail job hirings echoes a cooling in the wider labour market as governments take action to bring down inflation through successive interest rate hikes. In their 25-26 July meeting, Federal Reserve officials in the US reiterated their commitment to “returning inflation to its 2% objective” while also seeking to achieve “maximum employment”.

Meanwhile, in the UK, the 7% year-on-year shrinkage in retail hirings follows the latest Bank of England interest rate hike, bringing the base rate to 5.25% – its highest level since February 2008. retail-insight-network.com

AI Will Drive Retail Profits
Amazon, Walmart projected to bring in most profits from AI

Combined both retailers account for 38.5% of the total financial impact

Artificial intelligence has the potential to bring in over $580 billion in extra profits for Amazon and Walmart according to new research from global research and advisory firm IHL Group.

In total, the top 212 North American public retailers and restaurants could see over $1.5 trillion in additional financial impact through 2029 — with Walmart and Amazon accounting for over $580 billion, or 38.5% of the total.

Behind Walmart and Amazon for financial impact are CVS, Costco, Kroger, The Home Depot, and Target. When it comes to overall AI readiness, the same two top the chart, but the rest of the list varies slightly, with eBay and Rakuten joining the ranks for readiness (replacing CVS and Costco).

AI is already transforming the retail market behind the scenes with traditional AI/ML improvements. Generative AI simply adds rocket fuel to that potential financial impact,” said Greg Buzek, president of IHL Group.

In addition, IHL forecasts the worldwide financial impact of AI from 2022-2029 to be $1.9 trillion, or 20.6% of the total. supermarketnews.com

Bad Actors Taking Over Business & Corporate Accounts
Best practices to defend against corporate account takeover attacks

When bad actors get control of business or corporate accounts, it can be more dangerous than comprised personal or consumer accounts.

The tools and techniques cybercriminals use are similar for both consumers and corporations, but the impact of a corporate account takeover can be much more significant, says Michael Halstead, managing director of finance and insurance at Launch Consulting.

According to Halstead, the attack vectors bad actors use include:

AdvertisementPhishing: This remains a popular method of attack as it has become much more sophisticated with evasive strategies, such as testing to avoid common defensive tooling. Artificial intelligence (AI) has also created new challenges with near-perfect phishing emails. SMS text messages have also become a popular technique as unlike email, mobile phones don’t have strong filters to block text messages containing spam or smishing attempts.

Pretexting: The human equivalent of phishing where an attacker creates a false pretext, e.g., impersonating a person in authority, to deceive employees.

Business email compromise (BEC): This specifically targets corporate email accounts. Attackers compromise or spoof executive or employee email accounts to trick others within the organization or external parties into performing fraudulent actions.

Social engineering: Uses human psychology and trust to manipulate individuals, often employees, into divulging sensitive information or granting unauthorized access.

Phone calls impersonating legitimate entities: Attackers target company executives, business partners, or financial institutions, to trick employees into revealing login credentials, account details, or sensitive information, which can then be used to gain unauthorized access to corporate accounts.

Deepfakes: The use of AI to create a video or audio recording of a high-ranking executive or colleague to trick an employee into transferring funds, sharing sensitive data, or giving an attacker control over a corporate account.

Leveraging insiders: Bad actors use employees to assist with corporate account takeovers. csoonline.com

Cybersecurity Expertise in Today’s Boardrooms & Corner Offices
C-Suite concerns drive cyber risk mitigation strategies

Know how to qualify cybersecurity expertise in today’s boardroom and corner office

The cost of global cybercrime damage is predicted to grow by 15% per year and is projected to reach $10.5 trillion USD annually by 2025. As a result, many organizations have begun prioritizing cybersecurity competency and upskilling at every level of seniority. On top of that, a rule proposed by the SEC in April of 2022, which requires stricter qualifications for cybersecurity expertise on boards and in senior management, is tentatively scheduled to be finalized by October 2023.

As organizations across all industries prepare for this ruling the question remains – what type of qualifications constitute cybersecurity expertise? At a baseline, cybersecurity executives and board members must be well-rounded and knowledgeable and have diverse experiences across the industry.

Proven, Hands on Industry Experience and Involvement

When it comes to evaluating professionals for senior cybersecurity positions, expertise should go beyond just educational background. In fact, 25% of organizations surveyed in the ISACA’s State of Cybersecurity 2022 Report responded that a university degree is not very important in their evaluation process for cybersecurity candidates, while 46% responded that this is only somewhat important to consider. On top of this, gaining knowledge and hard skills pertaining to cybersecurity is now more obtainable than ever – as high-quality information and online courses can be accessed seamlessly. With this in mind, evaluating professionals for these positions becomes a more nuanced undertaking, as those appointed to senior positions must be able to prove that their skills match what’s included on their resume.

For board members, proven industry tenure is key. At a minimum, managers and board members should have at least 15-20 years of proven and verifiable cybersecurity industry experience. Although a degree in cybersecurity or computer science is required, senior employees must be able to demonstrate direct experience in developing cyber policies, strategies, and response plans, for instance.

CISA Committee Tackles Remote Monitoring and Management Protections

CISA's public-private partnership produces RMM strategies to shore up critical infrastructure and to educate the MSPs that provide remote access to them.

Just two years after Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) Director Jen Easterly unveiled the Joint Cyber Defense Collective (JCDC) initiative, a cooperative effort between public and private cybersecurity sectors, the group has presented its first piece of guidance: a road map to shore up the remote monitoring and management (RMM) systems ecosystem behind the country's critical infrastructure.

RMM tools are used by managed service providers (MSPs) to remotely access many critical infrastructure systems. Not surprisingly, threat actors have sought out RMM tools to gain access to the organizations using them, the JCDC explained in its new RMM Cyber Defense Plan. Once breached, threat actors can evade detection and maintain persistent access in these infrastructure systems. darkreading.com

Lawmakers Demand Answers from Online Sellers Over Harmful Products
E&C Bipartisan Leaders Demand Online Marketplaces Divulge Efforts to Remove Harmful, Recalled Products from Platforms
Washington, D.C. — House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), Full Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), Innovation, Data, and Commerce Subcommittee Chair Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), and Subcommittee Ranking Member Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) wrote to Meta and other online marketplaces today requesting information regarding efforts to end the sale of banned and recalled hazardous products on their platforms.

KEY EXCERPTS FROM THE LETTER TO META:

“The U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is tasked with keeping the public safe from consumer products that pose an unreasonable risk of injury or death. In addition to its own work, the CPSC relies on online marketplaces, like Meta, to keep consumers safe by preventing the posting for sale of products that are known to be dangerous. It is our understanding that Meta has been falling short on this mission.”

“Meta’s failure to prevent recalled products from being posted for sale on its platform has resulted in your users and their children being placed at risk of purchasing and using a product that CPSC has found to pose a serious risk of injury and potential death.”

BACKGROUND:

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) relies on online marketplaces to keep people safe by proactively preventing the sale of products that are known to be dangerous.

Recent reports suggest that at least one platform, Meta, has fallen short of that responsibility, despite numerous takedown requests from CPSC.

CPSC has issued takedown requests to various platforms, including several takedown requests for recalled products related to infant deaths.

CPSC has formally issued an approximately one thousand take down requests a month for these products.

To date, the volume of takedown requests has not slowed, and CPSC staff is unaware of any proactive measures by the platform in question to prevent these postings in the future.

This lapse has resulted in thousands of users and their children being put at risk of using a product that has been found to pose serious risk of injury and potential death. energycommerce.house.gov

Walmart Using Facial Recognition to Crack Down on Delivery Driver Fraud

Some Walmart delivery drivers bringing groceries to customers' homes aren't who they say they are

Employees and drivers say the platform has an issue with drivers posing under multiple names, and Walmart is rolling out a facial-recognition and ID-scan system to verify identities and prevent fraud.

Walmart has been focused on growing Spark over the past few years. But drivers and employees say the company has faltered in combating a colossal issue plaguing not just other drivers but the safety of customers: drivers who aren't who they say they are.

Insider spoke to six Spark drivers across the US and a Walmart employee who works with Spark drivers. Some asked not to be identified, citing fear of retaliation by Walmart, including deactivation. They described pockets of drivers delivering for Spark under multiple names, using multiple phones.

In a statement to Insider, a Walmart spokesperson said that Spark "takes any reports of fraudulent activity seriously and has deployed many of the same enhancements other platforms have introduced to identify and prevent fraudulent activity, including process improvements, product, and technical solutions and confirming the identity of drivers picking up and delivering orders."

"We actively monitor and deactivate accounts whenever we become aware of fraud and are continuously rolling out new features and solutions to further prevent this activity," the spokesperson added.

Recently though, Walmart started rolling out a new verification process for Spark drivers. The process requires drivers to take pictures of themselves periodically using the Spark app on their phones to ensure it matches their photo ID. Spark is rolling out a facial-recognition system on its app, which is expected to be in place nationwide in the next month.

Other delivery platforms like DoorDash and Instacart already require this sort of periodic identification and take action against workers who cannot confirm their identity. businessinsider.com

Corona, CA: 2 suspects in $100,000 California jewelry store smash-and-grab arrested after police pursuit
A jewelry store employee was pepper-sprayed by thieves during a $100,000 smash-and-grab robbery in Corona on Sunday, police said. The robbery occurred at Daniel’s Jewelers on 2785 Cabot Drive. Police were called there at 2:57 p.m. Four masked men entered the store and used hammers to smash several display cases before loading jewelry into a trash can and running into a nearby getaway vehicle, described as a white Chevrolet Malibu with no license plates, Corona police said in a Monday statement. Police pursued the suspects’ vehicle on the 91 Freeway and off Gypsum Canyon Road, eventually through Yorba Linda, Placentia and Brea before officers used a PIT technique to disable the car on East Commonwealth Avenue and State College Boulevard in Fullerton. Two of the five suspects in the car were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy and robbery: a 24-year-old Inglewood man and a 17-year-old boy from Compton. Police are still searching for three suspects who fled from the scene, described as men in their late teens or early twenties. Authorities recovered a trash can with jewelry inside the suspects’ vehicle.  pressenterprise.com

DOJ: Missouri Man Gets 34 Months for Unemployment Insurance, Home Depot Frauds
ST. LOUIS – U.S. District Judge Matthew T. Schelp on Monday sentenced a man from Ste. Genevieve County to 34 months in prison for defrauding both Home Depot and Missouri’s unemployment insurance program.

Grass also admitted defrauding Home Depot on multiple occasions by filling a cart with boxes of vinyl flooring and showing employees a fraudulent receipt claiming that he’d paid for the flooring online. Grass then sold the flooring on Facebook. Charging documents say he stole about 468 boxes of flooring that way from Home Depot stores in St. Louis and St. Louis County from Jan. 5, 2023 through Feb. 6, 2023.

Arthur Grass, 36, was also ordered to repay $207,000. Grass filed false unemployment claims for about 10 people beginning in May of 2020, claiming that the employees had been laid off from his construction company, AJE Construction. Grass cashed out the unemployment benefits, which had been placed on debit cards, and kicked some money back to the purported “workers”.

Grass was arrested on March 31, 2022 by St. Charles County police investigating catalytic converter thefts. His Jeep was in a storage lot with Grass inside. Police later found a stolen Glock 9mm pistol in a toolbox in the Jeep. Grass is a convicted felon and barred from possessing a firearm. justice.gov

Shootings & Deaths

Indianapolis, IN: Update: Man accused of killing Dollar Tree Manager found incompetent for trial
The man accused of killing a cashier at the Dollar Tree in Lawrence in May has been found incompetent to stand trial. On Monday, Jalen Thomas, 21, was found incompetent to stand trial just three months after he was charged with murder in the death of Jasmine Bennett. According to court documents, Thomas told investigators he committed the crime because he was mad Bennett refused to give him an item exchange weeks earlier.

Police say Jasmine Bennett was working inside the store when she was shot multiple times. She was rushed to the hospital where she later died Court documents say Thomas was a former employee of the store. He first told investigators that he was angry at Bennett's mother, who was the manager at another Dollar Tree store, because she had promised him hours and then changed her mind. Thomas then told them that Bennett had refused to do a merchandise exchange for him and it made him angry so he purchased a handgun shortly after.

The manager working that day told detectives that Thomas had been fired from the store in March for stealing and that he had returned at least two other times causing problems, according to court documents. She said Bennett had paged her to warn her that Thomas was inside the store, but she did not see him. Thomas will return to court on November 27 for another status conference. If nothing has changed, he will remain in treatment at the State Hospital.  wrtv.com

The state has asked for the jury to be finalized and selected Monday, and for opening arguments to start first thing Tuesday morning. Police said Stough was arrested for the murder in November 2021 and has been behind bars since.  wftv.com

Evansville, IN: Police and west side Walmart employee honored for actions during shooting
Dozens of Evansville police officers were recognized for their heroic actions on Monday. At the Evansville Police Department’s annual promotion and award ceremony, leaders honored over 90 officers. The ceremony is for their heroic actions during the Walmart shooting in January that ended with the shooter being shot and killed by police, and employee Amber Cook hurt. EPD leaders also awarded Walmart employee Heather Moore with the department’s outstanding citizen award for helping Amber Cook after she was shot. Moore says many more lives could have been taken if it weren’t for the officers’ response. “Very very very thankful, said Moore. “Four minutes, it took them four minutes to get there and 12 minutes it was all over with. It seems like a lot longer than that but that’s what it was.” Moore say Amber Cook is still having surgeries from the shooting, but is improving.  14news.com

New York, NY: Canal Street crackdown nets eight arrests, $30M in counterfeit merch
The merch was fake. The busts were real. The NYPD seized $30 million worth of counterfeit goods and collared eight illegal street vendors in the department’s latest crackdown on Canal Street, authorities said. The takedown comes in the aftermath of recent Post stories documenting how the bogus businessmen were back out in full force and an expose on how smugglers flood Canal Street with the counterfeit swag. Authorities put the drop on the vendors Thursday afternoon, police said, seizing a blizzard of the usual knockoff favorites: sneakers, purses, watches, bags. The raid occurred “in response to numerous community complaints,” the NYPD told The Post. The ongoing Canal Street saga is a cat and mouse game between cops and illegal vendors. A massive NYPD sting in August 2022 netted as much as $2 million in knockoff designer goods on Canal Street near Broadway. But the phony peddlers popped back up in the same area within months. In November, cops seized more than $10 million in “high-end” counterfeit goods in a sweep of knock-off purses, sneakers and other illicit goods on Canal Street. The raid led to 17 arrests, with the rogue vendors facing a top charge of trademark counterfeiting property over $1,000, a felony in the state, Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey said. The eight vendors busted Thursday range in age from 33 to 50. The suspects all face trademark counterfeiting charges, while some are also being hit with unlicensed vendor charges. One was also charged with resisting arrest, the NYPD.  nypost.com
