The Reach of Shootings in America
Nearly 200 people have been killed in mass shootings in the past two years. The
victims leave behind networks of family and friends, who themselves become
trauma survivors, as are many in the community where such events occur.
The Wall Street Journal looked at shootings in public places that killed four or
more people, a common definition of a mass shooting, starting with the Las Vegas
shooting in 2017. The map shows where the victims were from and where at least
one relative lives.

FBI Agents Association Helps Build Momentum for
Domestic Terrorism Law
The organization, responding to recent mass shootings, called on Congress to
pass a law making domestic terrorism a federal crime. A bill was introduced in
the Senate this week.
After two deadly mass shootings this month, momentum is growing to give federal
law enforcement more tools to investigate and prosecute cases of domestic
terrorism. The FBI Agents Association is a leading voice in the effort.
Last week,
in the wake of the shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, FBIAA
called on Congress to enact a law defining domestic terrorism as a federal

Walmart CEO addresses recent store shootings, gun sales in earnings report
Still reeling from the two recent, separate shootings that occurred at its
stores, Walmart released its second quarter 2020 earnings. A shooting at a
Southaven Walmart July 30 left two of the retailer’s managers dead, with the
alleged killer a disgruntled ex-employee. On Aug. 3, a shooting at an El Paso
Walmart left 22 people dead.
Walmart Inc. president and CEO Doug McMillon noted in the earnings report the
steps the company has taken in the past to curb gun violence, such as raising
its minimum age to buy firearms or ammunition to 21 (in 2018) and ceasing sales
of military-style rifles, such as the AR-15 (in 2015). He said the company
believes the reauthorization of the federal Assault Weapons ban should be
debated.
“We are focused on the safety of our associates and customers in all our stores
and clubs,” McMillon said. “We estimate that we represent about 2 percent of the
market for firearms today, which we believe places us outside at least the top
three sellers in the industry. We estimate we have about a 20 percent share of
ammunition.”

Soldier Awarded Army Commendation Medal for Act of Heroism
During El Paso, TX Walmart Shooting
A soldier with the 1st Armored Division Sustainment Brigade was awarded the Army
Commendation Medal during an award ceremony held at Fort Bliss on Wednesday for
his act of heroism during the El Paso shooting.
Pfc. Glendon Oakley, an automated logistical supply specialist from Killeen,
Texas, was at the Cielo Vista Mall, roughly 800 feet from the Walmart where the
shooting took place on Aug. 3, according to a 1st Armored Division photo
release.
In an interview with MSNBC, Oakley told the media that he was shopping at a Foot
Locker when a child ran into the store and reported the mass shooting.
That was followed by sounds of gunfire. Oakley, who has a gun permit, drew his
weapon and ran out of the store.
“I saw a whole bunch of kids running around without their parents … I tried to
pick up as many as I could and bring them with me,” he told the news outlet.
Oakley took several panicked children at the mall and escorted them to police
officers in the area.

Gunshot Detectors Shorten Response Times And Make Cities Safer
Gunshot detectors use digital microphones installed on (or in) buildings or
along streets that listen for evidence of gunshots, provide near instantaneous
notification, triangulate the location of shooters and direction of a shot,
detect the type of gun and ultimately aid in catching fleeing suspects and
solving crimes.
Gunshot detection is just one technology playing a role in the larger trend by
city agencies to improve core city services. Cities are turning to what are
referred to as ‘smart city’ solutions – new, innovative technologies that
improve and maintain a high quality of life and ‘liveability’ for citizens.
Several cities in the United States have implemented gunshot detection systems.
Identifying and deterring gun violence
Gunshot detection systems can shorten the response time in an active shooter
situation ShotSpotter, a provider of gunshot detection solutions that help law
enforcement officials and security personnel identify, locate and deter gun
violence, announced that
seven new cities have deployed ShotSpotter technology in their communities.
The new cities include
Cincinnati, OH; Jacksonville, FL; Louisville, KY; Newburgh, NY; Pittsfield, MA;
Syracuse, NY and St. Louis County, MO
– joining the more than 90 jurisdictions that rely on ShotSpotter to ensure a
fast, accurate response to gunfire incidents. Three existing ShotSpotter cities,
New York City, Chicago and Birmingham
have also recently expanded their coverage areas.

More employers are considering hiring people with
criminal records
A shortage of workers - and shifting attitudes
- are creating more opportunities
for people with criminal records.
A new survey from recruitment and staffing services firm
Adecco USA
found that
companies in many industries are looking at new pools of talent they may
have never considered, including people with criminal records.
In the survey, released in July, 49% of companies said they were “loosening”
requirements because they were unable to find enough qualified candidates.
Twenty-one percent of respondents said they were no longer drug testing
candidates, and 35% said they would hire a temporary worker with a
criminal conviction in their past if their skill set applied to the job.
“This isn’t something employers would have considered when unemployment rates
were 6%, 7% or higher. So, it’s really a dramatic shift that we’ve seen within
the past 24 months,” says Amy Glaser, SVP at Adecco Staffing. And it’s not just
among temporary workers, she says. “We’re also seeing it in full-time
employment. Employers are, again, reducing the level of screenings.”

Report: Levi’s, Wrangler, Lee seamstresses harassed, abused
Women sewing blue jeans for
Levi’s, Wrangler, Lee and The Children’s Place
faced sexual harassment and gender-based violence and some were coerced into
having sex with supervisors to keep their jobs in African factories, labor
rights groups say. In response to the revelations, the brands have agreed to
bring in outside oversight and enforcement for more than 10,000 workers at five
Lesotho factories, according to a report from the Washington-based Worker Rights
Consortium released on Thursday.
The labor rights group investigated
Taiwan-based Nien Hsing Textile factories in Lesotho - a poor, mountainous
kingdom encircled by South Africa
-
after hearing from a number of sources that women who sew, sand, wash and add
rivets to blue jeans and other clothes were facing gender-based violence.
Managers and supervisors forced many female
workers into sexual relationships in exchange for job security or promotions,
the report says. In dozens of interviews, the women described a pattern of abuse
and harassment, including inappropriate touching, sexual demands and crude
comments.

Retailers Can Prevent
Card-Not-Present Fraud
The dramatic rise in card-not-present fraud is taking its toll
on retailers and consumers. According to Juniper Research, retailers are
expected to lose about $130 billion in revenue between now and 2023 in
fraudulent card-not-present (CNP) transactions. Fraudsters do not discriminate.
Retailers of every size are at risk.
What should be a wake-up call is seen in the recent report from Juniper
Research. Findings in Online Payment Fraud: Emerging Threats, Segment
Analysis & Market Forecasts 2018-2023 noted that not enough retailers are
investing in fraud prevention. While everyone is well aware of the staggering
amount of stolen personal data readily available at little expense, the research
indicated that retailers have held back on investing in CNP fraud prevention
tools because many believe it will be too costly, they won’t get the immediate
return on investment, or the kind of return that makes it worthwhile. Others
believe that fraud is a cost that comes as a part of doing business.
Nothing could be farther from the truth. The fact is that the effective way to
curb CNP fraud rests at the heart of every transaction. The determining factor
is ascertaining whether the customer is who they say they are when the
transaction is taking place wherever it takes place. Identification
authentication is simple and a necessity in protecting a retailers’ bottom line
and the integrity of the legitimate consumer.
Intellicheck's Retail ID SaaS technology solutions are budget-friendly, powerful
fraud deterrents that prevent fraudulent CNP in-store, online and mobile
purchases, while providing a frictionless, engaging customer experience.
These flexible, adaptable solutions include
Retail ID Online, which easily
integrates with a retailer’s online purchasing website and seamlessly checks the
would-be consumer’s driver license for authenticity. It is a rapid, simple
solution that guides a customer to capture images of their driver license. The
cutting-edge app encrypts the driver license image to strict standards and
matches the image against authentic driver license formats.
Retail ID Mobile
works the same way, using a smartphone to capture the driver license image. With
real-time authentication, the purchase can proceed or, if the driver license is
flagged as counterfeit, the purchase process is terminated. If you use tablets
or other mobile devices in your retail establishment to expedite customer
purchases, no problem. Simple integration will have your devices converted to
fraud fighters in no time.
Retail ID Online and
Retail ID Mobile are so simple and easy to use that there
is very little training required and they don’t require significant IT resources
and costly, ongoing support.
Your customers will shop with confidence and you’ll stop unnecessary costly
losses because Retail ID products have proven 99.9% effective in identification
authentication. No matter your size, Retail ID technology solutions will work
for you. For more information visit

Formjacking Now Accounts For Most Web Breaches
Formjacking accounted for 71% of all web-related data breaches in 2018 as
hackers looked to steal customers’ financial information in large quantities,
according to F5 Labs.
The security vendor’s Application Report 2019 is compiled from analysis
of 760 breaches and revealed that attacks like those featuring Magecart digital
skimmers are on the rise.
The transport industry was the biggest victim of formjacking attacks, accounting
for 60% of all credit card-related theft during the reporting period,
followed by retail (49%), business services (14%) and manufacturing (11%).
David Warburton, senior threat evangelist at F5 Networks, argued that
formjacking attacks have “exploded in popularity” over the past two years.
“Web applications are increasingly outsourcing critical components of their
code, such as shopping carts and card payment systems, to third parties. Web
developers are making use of imported code libraries or, in some cases, linking
their app directly to third party scripts hosted on the web,” he explained.
“As a result, businesses find themselves in a vulnerable position as their code
is compiled from dozens of different sources – almost all of which are beyond
the boundary of normal enterprise security controls. Since many web sites make
use of the same third-party resources, attackers know that they just need to
compromise a single component to skim data from a huge pool of potential
victims.”

Extending security to fourth parties your
business needs, but doesn’t control
While there is much discussion about the
data security and privacy risks created by third parties, another source of
risk can be significant but overlooked: that from fourth parties – those vendors
that your vendors use – who may be integral players in your mission fulfillment
but who are beyond your direct contractual oversight.
Because third parties often touch customer systems and exchange data with
customer staff, they introduce additional layers of
cyber risk. Companies do have some safeguards in contractually imposing
responsible behaviors and penalties for non-compliance, and monitoring document
exchange as much as possible. Fourth parties, however, may provide a critical
service but in turn extend your risk surface in ways you hadn’t understood, or,
lacking a direct relationship, can’t really attempt to control.

Macy’s teams up with Google to help run its warehouses
One way Macy’s is trying to improve its business stems from the work it’s doing
on the back end, at its more than a dozen fulfillment centers.
CEO Jeff Gennette briefly mentioned during a post-earnings call with analysts on
Wednesday that Macy’s had started working with Google to power its new Macy’s
Backstage distribution center in Columbus, Ohio, which officially opens on
Thursday. He said the Google Cloud platform will allow Macy’s “efficiency, speed
[and] scale.” The Google Cloud platform is going to be rolled out to all
other Macy’s distribution centers next year, he said.
Macy’s has six so-called mega centers in the U.S., fulfilling customers’ online
orders directly to their homes, and then 16 fulfillment centers servicing its
stores.
Google is already helping to power the supply chains of other retailers
including Kohl’s, Home Depot and Target. At the core, Google assists with
managing merchandise and keeping items in stock, while ensuring deliveries
arrive on time. It uses data analytics and other algorithms it’s created to do

A Rising Tide of Digital Payments Will Bring New
Fraud Threats, Says Forrester
As payment companies expand ways for consumers to make digital payments, 62% of
North American merchants, bankers, and fintech providers expect more such
payments within the next two years, says Forrester Research Inc. in its
“Understanding the Evolving Payments Landscape” report.
Commissioned by Visa Inc., the
report also found that 46% expect ways to make payments via the Web or on a
mobile device will increase. This won’t be just for large merchants either.
Forty-seven percent say more small businesses will rely on a mix of credit and
debit cards and digital payments.
Yet, with additional merchants accepting digital payments, acquirers and
banks will face
new fraud threats, the report suggests. Sixty-one percent said that
new payment technology make them more susceptible to fraud. “One downside of
this advancement in payment technologies is that as payments get more
innovative, so do fraudsters,” the report said. “Businesses are acutely aware of
the new fraud risks that come with the adoption of new payment technologies”

Senators Calling Out Amazon on Product
Recommendations
U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal, D-CT, and Bob Menendez, D-NJ, wrote a letter
to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos questioning how Amazon chooses which products to put
on its “Amazon’s Choice” recommendation list.
The senators expressed concerns about whether the badge is motivating
consumers to purchase inferior products.
“Amazon bears the responsibility of providing its customers with accurate
information to ensure they can be informed purchasing decisions,” Blumenthal and
Menendez said in the letter. “Unfortunately, Amazon has failed to fulfill this
responsibility with its use of ‘Amazon’s Choice’ badge. We are concerned the
badge is assigned in an arbitrary manner, or worse based on fraudulent product
reviews.”
Both senators provided a list of questions about Amazon’s methodology in
choosing an “Amazon Choice” badge. Some of the questions centered on whether
Amazon uses an algorithm to make a decision, whether employees choose the
products personally and review them and what steps are being taken to remove
phony product reviews.

How to Keep Your Online Store's Rewards Program
Secure
Fraudsters who attack e-commerce merchants aren't always focusing their
nefarious efforts where you might think. Instead of trying to steal products or
services, sometimes they're seeking access to retailers' online rewards
programs, either to use the points in hijacked customer accounts or to steal
personal data. The lengths criminals have gone to for loyalty program
information may surprise you.
When you review the facts about rewards programs, it’s a little surprising it’s
taken so long for fraudsters to target them on a large scale. Eighty-seven
percent of US consumers are
members of at least one loyalty program, with the average consumer belonging
to six, according to a 2019 report by Blackhawk Network Research. Nearly half of
US business surveyed by Blackhawk offer loyalty programs because they encourage
repeat business, increase revenue and raise the lifetime value of customers who
are members.
Here's more about why loyalty programs are such a tempting target, what the
risks are for merchants and consumers, and how to protect your rewards program.

Omaha, NE: 'Shoplifting booster' sentenced to
prison
Nenzingha Davis stole $50,000 of merchandise from Victoria’s Secret stores in
Omaha and Lincoln
A Douglas County judge sentenced Nenzingha Davis, 23, to at least two years in
prison Wednesday afternoon. Omaha police arrested Davis and Montashia Montgomery
in December 2017 on suspicion of felony shoplifting and terroristic threats.
"She would be with other boosters. They stole over $50,000 in merchandise," Det.
Sherry Gooley said. Police believe Davis and Montgomery were "ringleaders" of a
booster group. On one occasion, police say Davis and Montgomery threatened an
employee while attempting to steal clothing.
In court Wednesday, Davis told the judge, " I have regret for what I did and I
did not realize the impact." Her lawyer said Davis shows remorse, has taken
anger management classes and has a five-year-old child. She also said Davis is a
rapper, lyricist with a budding music career and expects success in the music
industry. They asked for probation saying Davis can't pay restitution.

Shootings & Deaths
Memphis, TN: C-Store Clerk Convicted of 2nd
Degree Murder
Teen walked out with a $2 beer, clerk shot him to death
Dorian Harris, 17, was already on his way out the door when the store clerk,
Anwar Ghazali, grabbed his gun, pointing it over the counter with two hands.
Harris had spent about seven seconds inside the store. The Top Stop Shop in
Memphis was busy that night, about 10 p.m. on March 29, 2018, and when the
unarmed teenager waltzed through the door, he didn’t waste any time being
sneaky. Dressed in purple pants and a hoodie, he grabbed a $2 beer from the
shelf in plain view of Ghazali, turned and left, as the clerk raced around the
counter. Ghazali burst toward the door past bewildered customers milling near
the counter.
Ghazali spun around looking for Harris in the parking lot before spotting him
bolting down the block. He took off on a sprint. He caught up and fired his gun,
one, two, at least three times. Then, he went back to the store. As he walked
back inside he said, “I think I shot him,” according to an arrest warrant, and
returned to the cash register to ring up the next guest. He never called 911.
Two days later, Harris was found dead on the same block, collapsed in a man’s
backyard.
On Thursday, Ghazali was convicted of second-degree murder, marking the
end of a tragic case that has sparked protests and boycotts and inflamed racial
tensions in Memphis as hundreds mourned the African American teenager.
Ghazali is set to be sentenced next month, facing between 15 and 60 years in
prison.

Port Richey, FL: Shots fired call at Gulf View
Square Mall was actually a Zales Smash-and-Grab Robbery
A suspect is in custody after a Mall employee was able to give police a detailed
description of the get-a-way vehicle. Deputies were called to Gulf View Square
Mall in Port Richey just before 1 p.m. Thursday, an apparent smash-and-grab
robbery that prompted a shots fired call. A representative for the sheriff’s
office says preliminary information stated shots had been fired. When deputies
got to the scene, they determined what happened was actually a smash-and-grab
robbery. No shooting happened at the mall, the sheriff’s office says.

Union, NJ: Walmart Evacuated After Reports Of Man
With Mask And Gun
There was a panicked evacuation at a Walmart Thursday after a false alarm about
a person with a gun inside. Union police received two calls of someone with a
gun in the store on Springfield Road just before 11 a.m. The weapon was
allegedly a gun. Employees were tasked with getting customers out. The Union
County prosecutor says a 911 call was received about a shooter in the store, but
no gun was found. “What they saw appears to be a toy gun that was being
stolen from Walmart,” said acting Union County prosecutor Lyndsay Ruotolo.
The prosecutor said the caller had also seen a warning on social media, but
wouldn’t confirm if it’s the same viral Facebook message one shopper showed
CBS2’s Lisa Rozner. It reads in part “Whatever you do this weekend, do not go to
Walmart.” and claims different locations could be under a shooting threat.
Multiple agencies responded to the call, including the Joint Terrorism Task
Force from the federal level. The store reopened Thursday afternoon. Police
won’t say whether anyone is in custody. The investigation is ongoing. Walmart
employees said they watched a training video about to do in active shooter
situation just a few weeks ago.

Goodyear, AZ: O’Reilly Auto Parts employees
zip-tied during Valley-wide armed robbery spree; suspect a former employee
Additional information has been released regarding a man police believe is
responsible for eight Valley-wide armed robberies between April and July 2019.
On August 9, Goodyear police arrested 42-year-old Dorian Cabrera. Cabrera's
crime spree reportedly began on April 14 when he robbed the O'Reilly's Auto
Parts located on North Litchfield Road. Police say he "pointed a handgun at
multiple employees, forced them to the back of the store and used zip ties to
detain the employees while he stole property from the victims and money from the
store." Police say Cabrera previously worked at that store. Cabrera
allegedly used similar tactics in the other robberies including the Justice Just
for Girls store.

Handling the big question - Why did you leave? is the hardest of them all if, in
fact, your departure was involuntary. Like Bum Phillips, the old Houston Oilers
coach, once said at a luncheon I attended, "There's two types of coaches - those
that have been fired and those who are waiting to be fired." And quite frankly
he was almost dead-on as over 70% of executives will face involuntary departures
from an employer during their career. The best position to take is one of
absolute straightforwardness. Be open - be honest - and be reflective right from
the beginning. But get it over quick and deal with it right at the beginning of
the interview and don't make it a long-winded response. Certainly review it -
rehearse it - make sure it answers the question. But get it out of the way and
move on in your own mind. Look to the future and leave it behind you.
Just a Thought, Gus
