Protests

‘It Was a Planned Attack’
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot Says Looting Was Organized

A day after looters smashed-in retailer’s windows, carried away loads of high-end merchandise and overwhelmed police officers in downtown Chicago, Mayor Lori Lightfoot says the violence was an organized raid and not a demonstration of angry protest.

“When people showed up on Michigan Avenue in the downtown area with U-Haul trucks and cargo vans, and sophisticated equipment used to cut metal, and the methods that were used, and how quickly it got spun up… that wasn’t any spontaneous reaction,” Lightfoot told TIME on Tuesday.

The chaos that unfolded Sunday night, and into the predawn hours Monday, was initially blamed on a police shooting in the city’s southside Englewood neighborhood. News of the incident - along with misinformation that a minor had been shot - pinballed on social media, resulting in “caravans” of cars headed north downtown, Lightfoot says. time.com

BLM organizer who called looting ‘reparations’ dismisses peaceful protesting
The Chicago Black Lives Matter organizer who justified looting as “reparation” has doubled down — insisting this week that even calling someone a criminal is “based on racism.” Ariel Atkins told WBEZ that her group “100 percent” supports the violent looters who trashed chunks of the Windy City Monday, again repeating her claim that it is “reparations.” nypost.com

Chicago locals fight off protesters and shut down BLM rally to prevent looting
A largely black group of Chicago residents infuriated by looters blighting the city pushed back against a Black Lives Matter protest. As access was again blocked to downtown overnight to stop more marauding — with bridges raised and expressway ramps closed — protesters turned to the South Side, where a man allegedly started a shootout with cops in an arrest that sparked chaos. The Englewood locals resisted, kicking out the protesters from BLM and groups campaigning to defund the police, according to Fox 32. nypost.com

Seattle police cuts face potential federal pushback
More fights likely lie ahead as the Seattle City Council looks to pick apart the police budget, but stripping down the department could run into additional stumbling blocks. One of them could be the consent decree. For the past eight years Seattle police have had to answer to federal authorities on many major policy moves. The city is accountable to federal monitors under the consent decree. This latest round of police budget cuts could meet that same scrutiny. komonews.com

Consumers Are Shifting Faster to Contactless Payments
During COVID-19 Pandemic Says Appriss Retail Study

Mobile wallets are among the contactless payment forms rapidly growing in popularity states an analysis released by Appriss Retail, a division of Appriss, Inc. The report, “The Rise in Contactless Payments During COVID-19,” documents changes in payment tenders related to COVID-19. The pandemic has significantly increased the adoption trajectory for mobile wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, PayPal Venmo and more.

To help fight disease transmission, retailers are encouraging consumers to use low-touch or no-touch forms of payment whenever possible. Along with helping to protect consumer and employee health, this move prevents cashiers from having to sanitize the keypad after a debit or credit card transaction.

“We studied the change in contactless payments because
rapid shifts in tenders may impact shopper marketing programs and the loss prevention analytics for a retailer,” said Steve Prebble, president of Appriss Retail. “Although the decline of cash has been a decades-long trend, COVID-19 has sped up the transition to these newer mobile wallet and tap-to-pay payment types. Consumers appear to be making a conscious choice to use payment forms that are convenient and allow them to avoid touching a keypad or handling money.”

“The Rise in Contactless Payments During COVID-19” is the third report released by Appriss Retail that marks the impact of COVID-19 on retail operations and consumer behavior. The other two reports, also available on the website, are “COVID-19, Unemployment, and Retail Risk,” and “The Influence of Social Media on Retail Sales of Essential Items During the 2020 Pandemic.”

DOJ Acts To Shut Down Fraudulent Websites Exploiting The Covid-19 Pandemic
The enforcement action, filed in Tampa, Florida, is part of the Justice Department’s ongoing efforts prioritizing the detection, investigation, and prosecution of illegal conduct related to the pandemic. The action was brought based on an investigation conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), in coordination with the Vietnam Ministry of Public Security. “The Department of Justice is committed to preventing fraudsters from exploiting this pandemic for personal gain,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Ethan P. Davis of the Department of Justice’s Civil Division. “We will use every resource at the government’s disposal to pursue scammers who are stealing money from citizens amidst the ongoing public health crisis.” justice.gov

Will CVS build on its COVID-19 test momentum?
While the novel coronavirus pandemic has been rough on retail as a whole, retailers in specific segments have found opportunities. One of those retailers is CVS, whose COVID-19 testing has brought an influx of new, first-time customers to the pharmacy chain. CVS reported having administered two million COVID-19 tests by the end of July, with 40 percent being performed on first-time customers. The chain also launched a B2B COVID-19 testing service for which it has 40 clients with hopes to expand that client base to 1,000. retailwire.com

2nd Surge Shift in CA
Calif. COVID deaths double, rural areas & suburbs hit hard
California’s second surge of the coronavirus has resulted in a near doubling of weekly deaths since the spring — with almost 1,000 fatalities in the last week alone — and radically shifted the geography of the outbreak, a Times data analysis found.

Suburban and agricultural areas that had been relatively spared during California’s first surge of the virus are now being ravaged. And urban areas such as Los Angeles County and the San Francisco Bay Area are reporting fatality numbers just as high, if not higher, than in the spring.

The Central Valley has become home to one of the worst coronavirus hot spots in the country.

Health experts said that some
states moved too quickly to reopen society after the first wave of coronavirus cases. Gov. Gavin Newsom, under pressure to lift months-long stay-at-home restrictions in May that had closed vast swaths of the economy, began allowing counties to reopen businesses before meeting his own previously established criteria to reopen safely. latimes.com

Pandemic's Toll on Employees
Returning Employees May Need Accommodations and Support
As worksites reopen, returning employees may require new accommodations as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it's important that employers not overlook the need to identify and address employee work capacities, limitations and restrictions.

Employees who have recovered from a COVID-19 infection with lingering symptoms, which may include breathing problems, heart problems, muscle atrophy or weakness, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Employees who were not infected, but who have other diagnoses that place them at high risk for COVID-19 may require accommodations to minimize infection risk.

Employees who were not infected and are not at increased risk for infection, but who have developed behavioral conditions. The available evidence suggests that behavioral health conditions have increased substantially since the emergence of COVID-19: Increased prescriptions for anxiety and depression. Distress Hotline saw an 891% increase in calls. Dramatic increase in call volume. Alcohol sales up 55% with increased drinking while at home working.

Some of these employees may self-identify to their employers prior to returning to work, yet it is incumbent on employers to proactively recognize employees who are struggling and to take action to help them access the appropriate accommodations, even if they are not legally required to do so. shrm.org

Walmart Settles Female Applicants' Hiring-Bias Complaint for $20 Million
Walmart and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) agreed to settle a nationwide sex-discrimination complaint for $20 million.

The EEOC filed the lawsuit on behalf of female applicants who applied for order-filling roles at Walmart's grocery distribution centers. The agency alleged that Walmart violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by using a physical abilities test that had a disparate impact on female applicants.

Walmart denied any wrongdoing, though the retail giant agreed to stop using the physical abilities test and provide training to employees who hire, manage or supervise grocery order fillers.

"We are glad we could reach an amicable solution," said Walmart spokesman Randy Hargrove. "We do not tolerate discrimination, and we're a great place for women to work." He said the company introduced the physical abilities test in 2010 based in part on the recommendation of the EEOC. shrm.org

Retail Disaster Recovery - A Client Story Revisited

InstaKey has plenty of long-standing partnerships with clients. Some began as far back as 20 years ago. On any given day at our headquarters, you’ll hear InstaKey employees tossing reminiscent client stories back and forth through office walls and down hallways. Remembering these warm and fuzzy moments reminds us why we get up every morning – to support our client’s businesses, making them more secure, in the most efficient, cost-effective way possible.

There is one such client story that was being tossed around just a few days ago. It’s a 15-year-old story about how InstaKey made a big difference for Sprint (Sprint Nextel, at the time) stores in the New Orleans area, in disaster recovery efforts after Hurricane Katrina. It still comes up from time to time, especially around this time of year. The situation in which this story was based is not as warm and fuzzy as we would like, but the story has a good ending.

In fact, this story was published in Chain Store Age back in July of 2006.

Here is a re-sharing of that story:

Hired Hackers Up 56%
Expanding attack surfaces leave security teams stretched thin
30% of businesses globally have seen an increase in attacks on their IT systems as a result of the pandemic, HackerOne reveals.

This is according to C-Level IT and security execs at global businesses, 64% of which believe their organization is more likely to experience a data breach due to COVID-19.

Researchers have seen a 56 percent increase in hacker sign-ups on the platform since March compared to the same time last year. With budgets and teams cut for a quarter of respondents, it’s perhaps no surprise to see that 30 percent of CISOs say they would now be more open to receiving vulnerability reports from third party researchers than before the pandemic.

Crowdsourcing security testing with hackers is the fastest and most cost-effective way to minimize the risk security vulnerabilities pose. This is a practice recommended by governments and major digital corporations and allows companies to tap into the best security researchers in the world.” helpnetsecurity.com

Deepfakes on Steroids
Digital Clones Could Cause Problems for Identity Systems

3 fundamental technologies -- chatbots, audio fakes, and deepfake videos -- have improved to the point that creating digital, real-time clones of people is merely a matter of integrating the systems

The fundamental technologies for creating digital clones of people — text, audio, and video that sound and look like a specific person — have rapidly advanced and are within striking distance of a future in which digital avatars can sound and act like specific people, Tamaghna Basu, co-founder and chief technology officer of neoEYED, a behavioral analytics firm, told attendees at the virtual Black Hat conference on Aug. 6.

While deepfake videos that superimpose a 3D model of a specific person over another person's face have raised fears of propaganda videos, disinformation operations, and smear campaigns, successful digital clones could cause even more problems, especially for systems that use voice or facial recognition for access management or as a way to fool employees into accepting someone's identity. While the current result of Basu's experiment have numerous telltale signs that the subject is clearly not human, the relative success of project demonstrates how close we may be to successfully creating simulated people. darkreading.com

Texas Man Sentenced to Two Years in Prison for $8M International BEC Scheme
JOSHUA IKEJIMBA pled guilty and was sentenced in Manhattan federal court Wednesday for conspiring to commit wire fraud as part of a wide-ranging, international business email compromise (“BEC”) syndicate. During the relevant time period, IKEJIMBA, his co-defendants, and others engaged in a fraudulent BEC scheme that deceived numerous victims, including international companies, individuals, and an intergovernmental organization headquartered in New York City, into diverting payments to bank accounts controlled by the syndicate.

The defendants executed this fraudulent scheme by, among other things, obtaining fraudulent passports in false names, registering and incorporating shell companies, and opening fake bank accounts at various banks throughout the United States. A substantial number of victims were tricked by fake emails and fraudulent wiring instructions into sending funds to the syndicate’s bank accounts, and those amounts were then withdrawn by members of the conspiracy and dissipated. During the period from about 2016 through about July 2018, it appears the defendants obtained approximately $8 million by defrauding numerous victims. justice.gov

How to mitigate insider threats to your cannabis enterprise

Key steps to create a program framework and protective intelligence strategies to reduce risk

Indeed,
given a large amount of cash associated with the cannabis industry, and a product that is quite easy to sell, it is not difficult to see how insider theft and diversion are a problem. However, by its very nature, the industry is in many ways like the pharmaceutical and food industries, and hybrid strains of plants and the specific recipes used to create edibles or vape cartridges are all valuable to competitors, thus rising a corporate espionage threat. Additionally, like every other company, insiders also pose a threat to commit workplace violence, embezzlement, sexual assault, and other crimes.

Mitigating the Insider Threat

The first element is a
robust pre-employment screening and background check process. Another important element is security education and awareness.

Solid physical security measures to include access control and CCTV systems are also important elements to help protect against various types of insider threats. They can help limit access to sensitive material and can also help protect against workplace violence. Proper cybersecurity protocols and procedures are other critical elements, and they must go hand in glove with physical security programs. securityinfowatch.com

Nebraska Heading Toward Legalization?
Nebraska: An Example of a Decriminalized State On The Verge of Change
Nebraska belongs to one of the first states that have put decriminalization laws in place to handle its cannabis. Decriminalization in Nebraska has delayed the legalization of cannabis but the efforts towards this direction remain persistent. There are a few initiatives with different agendas that are pushing for cannabis legalization, in particular, for medical purpose.

Leaving Decriminalization Behind

Implementing cannabis legalization also means establishing state regulations and stepping out of the “criminal monopoly” that is often associated with decriminalization of cannabis. With this step, a legal framework would be in place for medical patients so they can receive the proper medical cannabis treatment for their serious health conditions, while
stable state regulations would effectively control cannabis production, market and businesses.

Amazon's Counterfeit Crime Unit
Amazon takes more legal action against counterfeiters

Amazon is teaming up with a U.K.-based cosmetics company in a product infringement lawsuit.

The e-tail titan and KF Beauty are jointly
filing a lawsuit against four companies and 16 individuals for counterfeiting KF Beauty’s “Wunder2” beauty items and offering the infringing products for sale in Amazon’s stores. The suit alleges violation of Amazon’s policies and KF Beauty’s intellectual property rights and various trademarks.

Amazon has recently engaged in a number of
efforts to prevent and punish sellers of counterfeit goods on its site, including a joint lawsuit against a New York-based counterfeiter with Italian luxury brand Valentino and supporting 3M legal action against Amazon sellers who allegedly sold counterfeit N95 respirators.

And in June 2020, Amazon launched its
Counterfeit Crime Unit (CCU), a global team with specialized experience in investigating and bringing legal action against bad actors. The Amazon CCU works with brands, as it did here with KF Beauty, and supports law enforcement as they pursue counterfeiters. chainstoreage.com

Bucks County, PA: Husband and Wife Admit nearly to Selling nearly $120,000 of Stolen Goods at Q-mart Shop
A Milford Township couple pleaded guilty Monday to a lucrative scheme that involved buying and selling stolen health and beauty items out of their Quakertown Farmers Market-based (Q-mart) business. Michael Gill, 42, pleaded guilty to organized retail theft and receiving stolen property, which are both third-degree felonies, while his wife, Denise Gill, 39, pleaded guilty to solicitation to retail theft and receiving stolen property, both of which are first-degree misdemeanors. Sentencing for the pair has been scheduled for Sept. 21.

The Gills were charged last October following an investigation by detectives from the Quakertown Borough Police Department and the Bucks County Detectives Drug Strike Force, which “found they had enlisted people suffering from opioid and methamphetamine addictions to steal health and beauty products from retail stores,” the DA’s office said. “The couple then purchased (the products) at a fraction of the retail value and sold (them) for a profit.”

According to the news release, the Gills sold many of the stolen items through an eBay account associated with their store, One Stop Health and Beauty Shop. “The couple sometimes purchased stolen items at the store, and on other occasions took delivery of the items at other locations along John Fries Highway in Milford Township,” authorities said. As part of their investigation, undercover law enforcement officers conducted “multiple controlled sales of purportedly stolen items to the Gills,” the district attorney’s office said. “Police later recovered some of these items when executing search warrants at the Gills’ Q-mart store and County Line Road residence.”

Michael Gill reported making between $2,500 and $5,000 each weekend in sales, including through the sale of stolen items, and buying about $1,000 in products from private sellers each week, according to a criminal complaint,” the DA’s office added. “Between March 2017 and March 2019, revenue from the eBay business came in at about $117,000.” bucks.crimewatchpa.com

Being in a slump is an absolutely scary place where your brain does more damage than your actions or lack thereof. More mental than anything else a slump happens to all of us and getting out of it can look like the longest darkest tunnel you've ever experienced. But remember there's always light at the end of every tunnel and getting focused on that light is the key. And turning it always begins with getting back to basics. Forcing yourself to find that focus and using the basics to get out of the slump is the only way out. Lean on your basics and trust you know them well enough that the old performance will start showing itself because once they do, you'll find yourself having fun and out of that slump.

Just a Thought,
Gus
