A Nucleus of Information-Sharing: Mastercard’s Fusion Center
When it comes to addressing global fraud and
security in the financial sector,
it takes a network to defeat a network.
Matt
Nyman, who previously served with Delta Force and the Joint Special Operations
Command, helped to stand up the first Fusion Centers within the U.S. government
following 9/11.
Years later, as Fusion Center Director for Mastercard, Nyman was tasked with
standing up a new Fusion Center – at Mastercard. While the private sector has
its own unique challenges and goals, Nyman says that the philosophy of
establishing a Mastercard Fusion Center remains the same: Find the business
units that have a stake in threat mitigation and that can contribute to the
greater good of the enterprise, and bring them to the table.
Mastercard’s Fusion Center is located in O’Fallon, Missouri, around 30 minutes
outside of St. Louis, and it is connected by a sliding wall to the company’s
Security Operations Center. The wall can be quickly removed to facilitate faster
communication during a crisis. The Fusion Center has been in operation for
around 10 months, and includes both corporate security functions and business or
fraud prevention functions.
“The Fusion Center actually pulls together teams from across Mastercard, so it’s
not just security, and when something happens, we have all the right people
there at the same time,” says Ron Green, CSO for Mastercard. “We have a Security
Operations Center, and they’re the ones watching the frauds and alerts, and
they’re the first to notice if something bad is happening. They start to explore
that, and as the problem gets bigger, the Fusion Center is right there, and
we’re able to react to it much quicker and more efficiently.”
Stakeholders in the Fusion Center include Intelligence, Corporate Resilience
(including crisis management, business continuity and technical recovery),
Corporate Security (vulnerability management, corporate security and
investigations), the Security Operations Center, Account Data Compromise (which
leads investigations after a customer breach), Fraud Intelligence and more.

Nike accused of fostering hostile workplace in new gender discrimination lawsuit
A group of former female employees at Nike Inc. are suing the company over
allegations that it "intentionally and willfully discriminated against [women]
with respect to pay, promotions, and conditions of employment," according to the
lawsuit filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court in Portland.
The complaint, which seeks class-action status, is led by former employees Kelly
Cahill and Sara Johnston, who worked at the company's Beaverton, Oregon,
headquarters and are both currently at rival Adidas.
They paint a picture of a corporate culture that systematically discriminated
against women, fostered a hostile workplace and even tolerated or ignored sexual
assault, according to the lawsuit.

Columnist: "America's increasing moral panic over active shooters
is overblown and counterproductive"
Active shooter situations have become the latest moral panic. FBI data and news
coverage blow attacks out of proportion, causing us to fear the rarest of
events.
Reports that there was an active shooter barricaded inside an Ohio military
hospital Thursday sent employees scurrying for safety as teams of first
responders rushed to the scene. News of the crisis spread quickly throughout the
national media and the Twittersphere. By the time officials gave the “all
clear,” it became apparent that a planned active shooter training exercise had
been
mistaken for the real thing.
Although actual active shooter events can be devastating, the level of fear
associated with this modern-day boogeyman is out of control, leading to
countless false alarms:
● An unfounded report of an active shooter inside a California hospital
Wednesday prompted a “code
black” lockdown of the facility and a massive police response.
● An
attempted robbery of a jewelry store on July 28 inside a Texas mall created
havoc when the sound of breaking glass was mistaken for an active shooter event,
sending terrified shoppers rushing for the exits.
● As fireworks lit up the sky above
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, last July Fourth, word spread through the
crowd that there was an active shooter among them, sending thousands running for
their lives. However, there was no shooting and no gunman — just folks
misinterpreting the sound of firecrackers.
Of course, anyone who sits in a classroom or at his desk at work, or who visits
a shopping mall or restaurant, faces the possibility of confronting an armed
assailant. But the likelihood is akin to that of being killed by lightning.
In recent years, the FBI has produced a series of reports on active shooter
events, dispelling a number of common misconceptions. For example, the latest
update indicated that, contrary to what many believe, active shooters are
generally
not driven by serious mental illness. Moreover, they tend to target specific
victims as opposed to shooting indiscriminately.

INFOGRAPHIC: The 10 Biggest Inventory Shrinkage Mistakes you can Easily Avoid
Inventory control is a critical component of any retail business affecting
operations and the bottom line. And if you’re experiencing shrinkage not related
to sales, it means you are losing your inventory.
A new infographic from Se-Kure Controls titled, “Common and Costly Inventory
Mistakes to Avoid” looks at 10 of the most common mistakes retailers make
regarding their inventory. These mistakes and others are responsible for losses
which totaled $48.9 billion according to the 2017 National Retail Security
Survey from the National Retail Federation.
For small retailers or small business owners, the loses are more impactful. The
NRF survey said on average inventory shrinkage costs retailers about 1.44% of
sales. And whether it is happening because of criminals or dishonest employees,
it is money you can’t recover.

Study: Physical stores need ‘near-perfect’ inventory management
Inventory management has emerged as a key factor for operational efficiency
within physical stores — and there is almost no room for error in today’s
omnichannel marketplace.
That’s one of the findings of a new report from ABI Research, which said
that as stores strive to perfect how they serve customers and integrate various
shopping and delivery channels, being able to accurately count, control and
predict available inventory will become a basic operational requirement.
“Stores which have limited intelligence on the location and quantity of stock at
the individual item level cannot expect to adequately serve their
customers or successfully execute a competitive omnichannel retail strategy,”
said Nick Finill, senior analyst at ABI Research.
The good news is that with computer vision use cases maturing, artificial
Intelligence tools becoming more powerful, and RFID technology demonstrating
major ROI, retailers are now able to approach 100% inventory accuracy — enabling
a transformation of the industry.

Online retailers are using empty mall spaces to test products
Mall operators are teaming up with startup programs to offer startups co-working
spaces, networking and mentorship possibilities. In November, the Pennsylvania
Real Estate Trust and incubator 1776 will open a retail incubator inside the
Cherry Hill Mall, and for the past three years, Westfield has been using space
in the Westfield San Francisco Centre shopping mall to connect startups with
member retailers.
With big-box retailers closing stores, operators are exploring new uses for mall
spaces to cope with a six-year high in mall vacancy rates in the U.S. —
reportedly 8.6 percent in the second quarter of 2018. Beyond giving new digital
companies an entry point to the physical retail world, companies can test
products with mall customers.

Smoke from the California wildfires is spreading 3,000 miles to New York City
Take
a look at this forecast model from the National Weather Service. It shows how
the smoke from the wildfires scorching California is traveling thousands of
miles. In this case, all the way to New York City -- about 3,000 miles away.
The weather service uses an experimental model that forecasts the spread of
smoke from wildfires across the country. It says winds lift the smoke up and
carry it across the US. And it doesn't stop there -- some of the particles move
even beyond the East Coast.
The smoke in the east is more than a mile above the surface. When it's that high
and stays there, the health risks are minimal,
according to the weather service. But if it's pulled down by the jet stream,
it can cause unhealthy air quality.

Mobile point-of-sale machines to contain critical security flaws
Mobile point-of-sale machines from some of the industry’s large payment
providers have been found to contain vulnerabilities. According to research
presented at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas, these
vulnerabilities allow fraudulent merchants to steal credit card information or
intercept transactions to steal funds from customers.
Positive Technologies researchers Leigh-Anne Galloway and Tim Yunusov said that
mPOS devices supplied by PayPal, iZettle, SumUp and Square all contained
flaws that could lead to customers being tricked into paying more for their
purchases.
These systems are usually linked via Bluetooth to a smartphone or tablet mobile
app, which then sends data to the payment provider's server. Researchers found
that criminals could intercept this traffic and change the value being
transferred during a magstripe payment, without alerting the customer.
Hackers typically target cheaper devices, which tend not to be compatible
with the latest secure payment options, such as EMV-enabled chip and pin.
Only 59% of card readers in the US are compatible with EMV payments, and the
majority of payments are still made using a magstripe and signature, according
to the researchers.

No Ifs, Ands or Bots: How Bad Bots are
Supercharging Account Takeover Fraud
Given the massive amount of information contained in an average hack, going
through it manually to validate useable credentials would not be feasible. Enter
bots. The recipient of bulk data wants to validate the username/password
combinations on as many sites as possible. So they load up specially programmed
bots (created by still other members of the fraud value chain—another specialty)
with the thousands or millions of stolen credentials they purchased on the Dark
Web and attack sites around the Internet.
The bots then engage in credential stuffing—automatically testing those
credentials to see which accounts they can successfully log into. The credential
stuffer then sells the smaller list of valid account credentials (either
individually or in chunks) for much more than they paid for the original bulk
list.
Certain types of companies are especially likely to be targeted by bots with
malicious aims. Of the top six industries that experience the highest percentage
of bad bot traffic on their websites, four are in the business of providing
products or services that require at least some level of digital delivery,
according to another recent report.3
Traffic generated by bad bots accounts for more than 53 percent of all visits to
online gambling sites, more than any other merchant vertical, the report said.
Airlines, ranked second at 44 percent, and ticketing sites (fifth at 23 percent)
bracket financial sites and healthcare as the industries with the most bad bot
activity as a share of total traffic. E-commerce retail ranked just behind
ticketing, with more than 21 percent of activity on those sites originating from
bad bots.
Bad bot activity is not restricted to credential stuffing (e.g., gambling,
airline, ticketing and e-commerce all experience price scraping by competitors
via bots), but it is a significant activity and leads directly to account
takeovers.

Cryptocurrencies: here’s what online retailers
need to know
“Cash, credit, or Bitcoin?” Ten years ago, this simple question would’ve caused
the majority of shoppers to scratch their heads at checkout. Today, however,
over 60% of consumers are aware of digital currency—a fact that’s pushing
online merchants to start exploring the future of payments.
More so than anything else, the rise of cryptocurrencies has put the spotlight
on our evolving definition of “currency.” Consumers are increasingly receptive
to non-traditional forms of payment and will make intentional choices to pick
retailers that are more accommodating of them. As a result, understanding the
nuances of cryptocurrencies is not only a valuable asset, but will lead to
long-term success, growth, and customer loyalty in the highly-competitive world
of e-commerce. Here are three ways to help your business ride the cryptocurrency
wave, and keep up with changing payment trends:

Mount Vernon, NY: $1M Nationwide
Cellphone Fraud Ring Busted In The Hudson Valley; 12 Arrested
With
the arrest of seven people Thursday, federal officials say they have
cracked a 4-year scheme to steal cellphones and other electronic devices
so sophisticated that its leaders created a how-to video for their
co-conspirators. It played out nationwide with a hub in Mount Vernon,
New York.
Prosecutors accuse 12 people in a conspiracy to steal cellphones, iPads
and other small electronic devices by hacking into more than 3,300
customers' accounts and stealing their identities to get new "upgrades"
for small upfront fees. The victims included both customers, whose
identities were stolen and/or whose accounts were accessed, and
cellphone service providers, which typically bore the financial losses.
The conspirators operated in New York and the Dominican Republic and on
the Darknet, prosecutors said.

southeast Charlotte shop early Monday morning has been charged in the man's
death. Alan Brett Corder, 49, is charged with voluntary manslaughter in the
death of 20-year-old Justin Anderson. Police say he was arrested at his place of
business on Thursday. The break-in was reported by an alarm company around 4:33
a.m. at the American Beauty and Garden Center. Around the same time, a man called
911 saying that he spotted an intruder in the business on a security camera. The
man called back shortly after and told the 911 operator that he just shot
someone at the store. Police say they arrived to find the alleged intruder,
identified as Anderson, shot behind the business. Medic pronounced him dead at
the scene.

Salem, MA: Man charged with 9 Felonies after
Macy’s Armed Robbery, Walmart shooting in June
A Salem man has been charged with nine felonies that stem from two
incidents in late June where he reportedly robbed a Macy's employee at gunpoint
and shot a man outside a Walmart. Jerry Borrego, 48, is accused of first-degree
assault and robbery, two counts of attempted murder and felon in possession of a
firearm, and three counts of unlawful use of a weapon. According to a Marion
County arrest warrant the June events proceeded as follows: Salem Police
officers responded to a report of an armed robbery at Macy's around 8 p.m. June
23. An employee told police Borrego and a woman later identified as Natali
Tavizon stole several items from the store, including a vacuum valued at $171.
When the employee tried to confront the two in the parking lot, Borrego
allegedly pulled out a silver handgun and pointed it at the employee, telling
him to leave. The employee retreated back into the store while Borrego and
Tavizon fled the scene.

Tip of the Day

There is as much – if not more – to learn from something that didn't work as
something that did. Virtually every one of those experiences is a life lesson
and goes into making you a better leader for tomorrow. The issue is how you
handle it today and how you handle it in an interview is critical and can have a
major impact on how you're viewed today and how you're viewed after an
interview. We all have to deal with failure and it's better if you're the source
of the information than someone else. Hiding it, ignoring it, minimizing it, or
spinning it almost always leads to negative perceptions, skewed opinions, and
more varying interpretations. It's best to anticipate the concerns and
accentuate the positive – both of which are easier said than done.
Just a Thought,
Gus
