The Monitoring Association Names Patricia Fody, Vector Security 'Monitoring Center Operator of the Year'

Patrica Fody, Central Station Alarm Response Operator, for Vector Security was named "Monitoring Center Operator of the Year" by The Monitoring Association (TMA) at the 2018 Electronic Security Expo last month.

The TMA Monitoring Center Excellence Awards recognize outstanding personnel who perform in the highest professional manner, thereby making a significant contribution to the betterment of the alarm industry and the alarm profession while demonstrating exceptional service to their customers and community.

Patricia started at Vector in 2010 as a Central Station Operator and then progressed to become a member of their Elite Team, which handles complex high priority and VIP customer accounts. Her tenure and knowledge also helped her become a mentor for new operators. In addition, Patricia has been an active participant in three committees designed to improve efficiencies and operations in the Central Station.

“We congratulate our winners for being recognized as the best of the best,” said TMA Vice President of Communications Elizabeth Lasko. "The TMA Excellence Awards recognize the operators on the front lines of the monitoring process, helping customers every day through very challenging situations. The managers who lead the personnel and oversee the functions of the monitoring center to achieve the best performance possible. The support people who keep the monitoring centers running through every challenge imaginable. And of course, the monitoring centers that have proven to deserve a spot at the pinnacle of our industry.” tma.us

Drone Takedown Authority Would Be Granted Under Senate Proposal
Security and law enforcement agencies would be given new authority to monitor and take down threatening drones under bipartisan legislation proposed by a group of U.S. Senators.

A bill introduced by top members of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee would also direct the Department of Homeland Security to study drone technology and the emerging threats it creates.

While technology exists to monitor most small commercial drones and to disable or redirect their flight paths, law often prohibits the use of these techniques. The bill S.2836, known as the Preventing Emerging Threats Act of 2018, would give DHS and the Justice Department the authority to monitor and track drones without consent of the operator. It also would allow the agencies to “seize or exercise control” of the devices, if necessary. security.world

Status: Ordered Reported on Jun 13, 2018 The committees assigned to this bill sent it to the House or Senate as a whole for consideration on June 13, 2018.

Editor's Note: The website also indicated there's only a 26% chance of passage and this is something retailers will end up needing as we continue to work on last mile delivery retailers will end up being heavily invested in drone delivery. govtrack.us

"Listening to the Frontend"
What Walmart's patent for audio surveillance could mean for its workers

A new Walmart patent shows the retailer might someday collect checkout line sounds and capture conversations between customers and the cashier ringing up their milk and diapers.

The patent, which was reported by BuzzFeed Wednesday, would use a system of sound sensors to listen in on workers' activities and interactions, gathering audio data such as the beeps and rustling of bags to determine the number of items in a transaction, the patent says, or conversations between cashiers and customers to hear whether, say, workers were greeting customers.

"A need exists for ways to capture the sounds resulting from people in the shopping facility and determine performance of employees based on those sounds," the retail behemoth wrote in its patent application, called "Listening to the Frontend."

The technology may never be built or implemented - it is only a patent - but provides yet another example of the ways employers are using technology to more closely monitor employee behavior and collect vast amounts of data to manage them.

In its patent, Walmart indicated the concept was designed as a possible efficiency hack that could help decrease store costs and boost guest satisfaction, writing that "one way to track performance metrics for employees is the use of a system including sound sensors near point of sale ('POS') terminals." The system could "correlate the audio data with an employee that is stationed at the terminal, and determine a performance metric for the employee." "The future will now be about how efficiently the box can be run." ctpost.com

BOPIS fraud is up 250% in 1 year. Can retailers protect their profits without losing customers?
As "buy online pickup in store," or BOPIS, grows in popularity for consumers, it is also becoming an enticing platform for fraudsters. Retailers are facing a new set of challenges with click-and-collect services that many are not prepared to handle. Although it is hard to compare the rates of fraud in BOPIS to other channels, it is apparent that such fraud is on the rise, according to Riskified’s senior fraud analyst, Emilie Grunzweig.

"Just a year or two ago we would have told merchants that BOPIS sales were extremely safe," Grunzweig told FierceRetail. "They had a fraud rate a fraction of regular e-commerce orders. That’s no longer the case. We’re seeing effective rates of fraud in BOPIS for some of our merchants that are 250% higher than they were in the last year."

BOPIS fraud is similar to any other e-commerce fraud as in the fraudsters use a stolen credit card, place an order online, pick up the goods at a store, then keep the items or resell them for profit.

Grunzweig says that this is where the balancing act comes in. On one hand, merchants can require more information online, or check IDs or verify credit cards in store, but that can take away from the customer experience.

"A high-friction route may deter some fraud, but it comes at significant cost," Grunzweig said. "We strongly believe that the best approach here is to implement really smart fraud prevention for the online order."

Moving forward, Grunzweig does not see any signs of BOPIS fraud slowing down, at least until a new platform becomes popular. So putting the necessary fraud protection in place is critical in order for brick-and-mortar retailers to continue to offer this platform in a competitive environment. fierceretail.com

Money Growing on Trees - Literally
Robust Security For The Cannabis Market Supply Chain

It's no secret that one of the next market segments to see exceptional growth nationwide is somewhat non-traditional: cannabis. The global cannabis market is projected to reach $60 billion by 2024, according to Ameri Research, fueled by the increasing legalisation and decriminalisation across much of the United States.

It is estimated that 22 million pounds of marijuana are grown each year in the United States, with 80 percent coming from California, Tennessee, Kentucky, Hawaii and Washington.

From seedlings to selling, securing every point within the supply chain is vital to the assets being distributed, and companies are now realising how lucrative this endeavor can be. Critical to the success of the industry is keeping the merchandise secure and the workers safe. In this article, we explore each part of the supply chain within the cannabis market and address ways of implementing robust security measures.

This is one industry where money actually grows on trees! When cannabis crops are planted either in greenhouses or in fields, security becomes critical, since the plants themselves are worth a significant amount of money.

Britain’s Online Shopping Boom Is a Bust for the High Street
U.K. consumers make 18% of purchases online, almost double U.S.
Britain’s quality road network, high-speed internet connections—93 percent of households have them, vs. about two-thirds in the U.S.—and tens of millions of consumers packed into an area half the size of California have helped e-tailers thrive.

Online retailers typically benefit from lower overhead than their store-based counterparts, but in the U.K. that advantage is bigger than just about anywhere. The country has the developed world’s highest commercial property taxes.

The shift to e-commerce has devastated Britain’s high streets, or central shopping districts. Until a few years ago, opening an outlet in a desirable area meant a 25-year lease with rent that could only be revised upward. Today it’s hard for many landlords to get commitments for more than three years as chains such as Toys “R” Us, department store BHS, and electronics retailer Maplin shut down and dozens of other retailers close locations across the country.

Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the opposition Labour Party, in March accused the government of “tearing the heart out of the country’s high streets.” Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond on July 5 said Britain “needs to find a better way of taxing the digital economy” to help level the playing field with traditional retailers.

BOTTOM LINE - The growing strength of online stores has devastated shopping districts across Britain and contributed to the woes of traditional retailers. bloomberg.com

It’s a time of “digital reckoning"
The Executive of the Future: according to Beth Comstock, former vice chair at GE

"It’s a time of “digital reckoning,” according to Beth Comstock, former vice chair at GE. “Everyone has to make room to discover what’s new and what’s next before it disrupts business,” she says, speaking with Mike Kearney, a partner with Deloitte Risk and Financial Advisory at Deloitte & Touche LLP, during a “Resilient” podcast.

In the future, executives “will put data at the forefront and own the entire customer journey, both the digital and physical,” says Comstock. And in the new environment, “You have to digitize how you work, not just the things you work with,” she adds.

In the podcast, Comstock also shares her insights for being a change agent, an authentic influencer on social media and discusses her “10 percent rule,” in which executives allocate 10 percent of their time at work to discovery — such as meeting new people and identifying new areas to pursue. UK: Poundworld to close another 80 stores
Another 80 Poundworld stores will be closed, resulting in 1,024 job losses, the company's administrators have said. The latest announcement means that 105 of the company's 335 stores are now earmarked for closure. Poundworld went into administration last month after failing to cope with rising costs, fewer shoppers and greater competition. The company's administrators, Deloitte, said talks to sell remaining parts of the business continue. bbc.co.uk

Controversial shopping mall partly collapses in Mexico City
A newly opened shopping mall on Mexico City's south side partly collapsed Thursday after structural problems apparently led the mall's operators to evacuate the area, and no injuries were reported. Videos posted on social media show a cantilevered, multi-story section of the mall collapsing in a cloud of dust and twisted metal on Thursday. Some of it fell into lanes of a major freeway, which had been closed shortly before the collapse. The Artz Pedregal mall opened in March, though parts remain under construction. It had drawn the ire of neighbors worried about the loss of open space, congestion and other issues. Built on the edge of the city's main expressway, the mall had suffered previous subsoil slides. Mexico City Mayor Jose Ramon Amieva said the collapse occurred in an area of offices, and experts were investigating whether the collapse of the cantilevered area was due to structural defects or soil settling. fireengineering.com

Facial Recognition - Hot Topic in the News

Microsoft Urges Congress to Regulate Use of Facial Recognition
Amid a growing call for regulations to limit the use of facial recognition technology, Microsoft on Friday became the first tech giant to join the chorus.

In a lengthy blog post about the potential and the risks of facial recognition, Bradford L. Smith, the company’s president, compared the technology to products like medicines and cars that are highly regulated, and he urged Congress to study it and oversee its use.

“We live in a nation of laws, and the government needs to play an important role in regulating facial recognition technology,” Mr. Smith wrote. He added: “A world with vigorous regulation of products that are useful but potentially troubling is better than a world devoid of legal standards.” nytimes.com

Facial Recognition Shows Promise as Next Step in Corporate Security
Two minutes after the glass door of the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland, was blasted by a shotgun round, and five newspaper employees were killed, police had the alleged shooter in custody.

But they had a problem when they took him in for questioning. He had no identification, he would not talk to police and his fingerprints returned no results from any database.

Police were stumped, but then investigators thought to put the mystery gunman’s photo into the state’s new facial recognition system. In a matter of minutes, the alleged shooter was identified as Jarrod Ramos,
This is one form of biometric technology that doesn’t require a lot of expensive hardware to implement nor does it require direct interaction of an individual with a card reader, biometrically-control door lock or similar technology.

Those two characteristics make it ideal as a way to improve corporate security in some specific ways while making it possible to sidestep the privacy concerns that surround government use of such technology. In many companies the implementation of facial recognition can be accomplished with little more than some software and a cloud account that includes access to artificial intelligence with image processing capability. eweek.com

Orlando Police Department resumes testing Amazon’s facial recognition technology
Amazon is selling facial recognition technology to law enforcement authorities and the American Civil Liberties Union says it should stop. But the Orlando Police Department is resuming testing of this controversial technology.

Last month, Orlando had stopped facial recognition tests, which officials said have never been used in active investigations. But Orlando Police Chief John Mina said in a statement Monday: “We have made good strides in testing this technology and believe it is important to continue this evaluation period to determine if it’s a concept that could add immeasurable value in enhancing the city’s public safety mission in a manner that balances reasonable privacy concerns.” marketwatch.com

Marriott International to Trial Facial Recognition Technology
Marriott International is partnering with Alibaba Group to test facial recognition check-in technology at two of its properties in China. The technology, being created by Fliggy, Alibaba’s travel service platform, reduces check-in time to less than one minute, according to Marriott. If all goes well, there will be a global rollout across all Marriott International properties in the future. msn.com

Hackers increasingly targeting cloud infrastructure
Cloud infrastructure is a growing target for cyber attackers because of available computing resources, as well as the repositories of valuable data, a report reveals.

As organisations move more of their IT estates and data to cloud environments, criminals are turning to the cloud to exploit its vast computational power and multiply their profits.

This is one of the key findings of the latest report from cyber security firm Check Point, covering the first half of the year.

The report notes that in the first six months of 2018, malware authors proved to be capable of more than previously imagined, with more sophistication and with a new level of agility. computerweekly.com

Hackers are selling backdoors into PCs for just $10
Cyber criminals are offering remote access to IT systems for just $10 via a dark web hacking store -- potentially enabling attackers to steal information, disrupt systems, deploy ransomware and more.

The sales of backdoor access to compromised systems was uncovered by researchers at security company McAfee Labs looking into the sale of remote desktop protocol (RDP) access to hacked machines on underground forums -- some of which are selling access to tens of thousands of compromised systems.

Systems advertised for sale on the forum range from Windows XP through to Windows 10, with access to Windows 2008 and 2012 Server most common. The store owners also offer tips for how those using the illicit logins can remain undetected.

Perhaps most significantly, McAfee says the accounts are associated with two companies which provide airport security: one in camera surveillance, and one in security and building automation. zdnet.com

Amazon’s Hate and Counterfeit Problems Pile Up
Amazon.com Inc.’s self-policing problems are piling up. Recently, it has been attacked because it has done a poor job deterring the spread of counterfeit products sold on its website. Add to those new accusations that it allows products that “promote hate and violence” to be sold via Amazon.

The Partnership for Working Families and the Action Center on Race & the Economy have fielded a large study titled “Delivering Hate: How Amazon’s Platforms Are Used to Spread White Supremacy, Anti-Semitism, and Islamophobia and How Amazon Can Stop It.” For some reason, the analysis starts out with a description of Amazon founder Jeff Bezo’s net worth, which is not key to the argument. The study’s authors go on to write:

Amazon enables the celebration of ideologies that promote hate and violence by
allowing the sale of hate symbols and imagery on its site, including Confederate and anti-Black imagery, Nazi and fascist imagery, and the newly adopted imagery of the modern white nationalist movement. Additionally, a number of these products are targeted at children.

Amazon also has been charged with another set of practices that needs massive resources to address. The sale of counterfeit products hurts the companies that make the real products and the people who buy counterfeits that they believe are genuine. Since Amazon is a highly trusted operation, it would never occur to most people that counterfeits would even be available. According to critics, they are not only available but plentiful.
Amazon has a policy that counterfeits cannot be sold on the site. The list of rules is very long, but in part it says:

It is each seller’s and supplier’s responsibility to source, sell, and fulfill only authentic products. Prohibited products include bootlegs, fakes, or pirated copies of products or content; products that have been illegally replicated, reproduced, or manufactured; and products that infringe another party’s intellectual property rights. If you sell or supply inauthentic products, we may immediately suspend or terminate your Amazon selling account (and any related accounts) and destroy any inauthentic products in our fulfillment centers at your expense.

However, violations of these rules often go undetected by Amazon, nor are the counterfeiters punished. 247wallst.com

Consumers Hate the Security Measures Designed to Protect Them from Fraud: Report

Almost daily, U.S. consumers are met with disheartening news that their personal information was put at risk in a data breach. When asked about new payment technologies, most are concerned about them having sufficient security measures in place to protect them. But, when the question is turned around, many consumers say they feel frustrated by the inconvenience those measures cause, according to a new report.

FICO, the data aggregator and credit-rating pioneer, found many of the measures put into place to protect consumers’ personal and payment data frustrate the very people they are designed to protect. Nearly half of those polled (47 percent) expressed frustration over answering Knowledge-Based Authentication questions during customer service calls, 71 percent don’t like difficult to read Captcha codes and nearly 8 of 10 U.S. consumers reported that they struggle to remember their passwords. Overall,
71 percent of those polled by FICO said there simply are too many security measures in place. cardnotpresent.com

Warehouse space availability dropped to 7.2% in Q2
The second quarter saw availability fall to 7.2 percent, the lowest level since 2000, as demand continues to outpace supply, according to CBRE data first reported by the Wall Street Journal. Availability has now dropped for a record 32 straight quarters.

Experts largely attribute the fall-off to growing demand for space as e-commerce grows. That’s prompting some owners to expand the scope of their operations, including by adding so-called last-mile delivery operations to their properties. therealdeal.com

Roxbury Township, NJ: Defendant Indicted In $12M Go-Go Bar ORC Theft Ring
An Edgewater man conspired with the owner of a shuttered go-go bar to use stolen credit card information – and illegally acquired gift cards – to steal more than $12 million. Kevin Bae, 30, shared a bank account with the Morris County bar owner “into which millions of dollars were transferred” through the scheme, Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal said Friday. The investigation – dubbed “Operation Smiles” -- found Lipka and others buying stolen credit card information on the dark web and cloning it onto blank cards with a special machine that made them look legitimate, Grewal said.

Groups of runners used the bogus credit cards to buy pre-paid gift cards issued by Master Card, Visa and American Express at retail stores – among them, Target and Home Depot -- stretching from Brooklyn to southeast Pennsylvania, the attorney general said. They then converted the collected gift cards to cash through bogus transactions at Smiles II, keeping 20 percent of the proceeds for themselves and dividing the rest among the runners, he said. dailyvoice.com

York, PA: Four stole $181K worth of baby formula from Conewago Twp. Warehouse
Four people are accused of stealing more than $181,000 worth of a baby formula from a Conewago Township warehouse in less than a two-year period. Northern York County Regional Police say Terrance Banks, Brayonna Hargrove, Jennifer Bagshaw and Pierre Bagshaw all conspired to steal and sell baby formula from the ES3 warehouse at 4875 Susquehanna Trail. Hargrove, Bagshaw and Banks face charges of corrupt organizations, conspiracy to commit theft, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property.

Police say 48 cases — totaling $4,608 — were pulled from the trash cans. Employees at the facility identified Pierre Bagshaw and Banks, employees there, according to police. Officials say that baby formula had gone missing from the warehouse as far back as the beginning of 2016, but there were only records of the thefts going back to September 2016. During that time, 1,892 cases of baby formula were stolen, totaling $181,632, documents state. yorkdispatch.com

Being a mentor can be an extremely worthwhile experience and sometimes the mentee brings mentoring to the relationship as well because we all learn from each other no matter what role we play. And while you may be reluctant or just feel time-strapped, try giving it a chance even for a short time and see what happens. As the old expression goes, one person can make a difference and you could help a fellow LP executive grow beyond their own expectations and, in having helped the number of people we've helped in our mere search role, I for one can say there is no better feeling in the world than helping someone reach beyond! That's what has actually kept me doing what I do for all these years!

Just a Thought,
Gus
