Ocado Robot Starts Massive $137M Fire in Online
Grocers Distribution Center
In February, a robot at an Ocado fulfillment warehouse sparked a massive fire.
The warehouse was destroyed, and the British grocer has just revealed the price
tag of the damage: $137M.
The
information was released in Ocado's half-year report and was noticed by
Sam Shead in Forbes. Ocado, a household name in the UK, is an online grocer
that's made an art of home grocery delivery. Like Amazon, the company relies on
massive warehouses and has invested heavily in automation to speed up order
fulfillment.
The Ocado fire may be another symptom of companies leaning hard into emerging
technologies to expand market share. The official cause of the fire was a faulty
battery charging unit,
according to the company in a shareholder meeting.
Presciently, Melonee Wise, a robotics pioneer and CEO of Fetch Robotics, drew
attention to the looming safety concerns in the automation industry when we
spoke at the end of last year. "I honestly hope 2019 is the year that robot
safety becomes a top priority, says Wise. "The potential mistakes of one
robotics company could set our industry back for years."
Last year Ocado
partnered with Kroger to be exclusive fulfiller for the U.S. supermarket
giant. It's part of a broader Ocado push to bring its online grocery fulfillment
to international markets -- a push driven by technology.

'Massive Breach of Privacy & Trust'
Facial-recognition use by federal agencies draws lawmakers' anger
State and federal lawmakers are calling for new rules and investigations
surrounding the use of facial-recognition scans of driver's license
databases by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other agencies, fueling a
debate over the technology some on Capitol Hill have said represents a "massive
breach of privacy and trust."
Public records obtained by Georgetown Law's Center on Privacy and Technology and
first reported Sunday by The Washington Post revealed how ICE, the FBI and
other agencies had worked for years with state officials to search through
millions of license photos without drivers' knowledge or consent.
The House Homeland Security Committee was expected to discuss possible
guardrails on Wednesday during the third congressional hearing in as many months
over the largely unregulated technology, which has faced bipartisan resistance
due to concerns over false arrests, public surveillance and government misuse.

Amazon sued by trucking company over use of 'Prime,' reports say
Accused of causing "irreparable injury to its business"
The Springfield-based trucking company, Prime Inc., is suing Amazon for
using "Prime" on shipping vehicles to promote its premium service. The trucking
company claims confusion caused by Amazon Prime has caused Prime Inc. to suffer
"irreparable injury to its business, reputation and goodwill."
The trucking company claims that since at least 1980 it has continuously used
its "Prime Inc." logo throughout the country on its advertisements, its
website and each of its 12,000 trailers. Over that time, the company claims it
has established "substantial and valuable goodwill" from consumers in the
"prime" name and logo and it should have common law rights to the marks.
The lawsuit says that in 2016 or 2017, Amazon started putting its "prime"
logo on tractor trailers that it used to transport goods to customers, which
the Springfield-based trucking company claims is a violation of its exclusive
rights to the Prime Inc. marks. Prime Inc. claims the Amazon Prime logo is
"confusingly similar" to its marks, and putting the Amazon Prime logo on tractor
trailers could mislead consumers.

Apple, Amazon, Facebook and Google to testify to Congress on antitrust
The hearing, scheduled for July 16 in front of the House Judiciary Committee's
subcommittee that deals with antitrust, will bring simmering Democratic and
Republican frustrations with Silicon Valley into public view, potentially
setting the stage for further scrutiny - or regulation - of an industry that
has long insisted that its size doesn't harm rivals or consumers.
The hearing - confirmed by aides to Rep. David N. Cicilline (D-R.I.), the
panel's chairman - comes weeks after federal competition regulators divvied up
responsibilities for the four tech giants in a move that could presage formal
federal probes into Apple, Amazon, Facebook and Google, and their business
practices.

NRF to name Kohl's CEO Michelle Gass as The Visionary 2020

their customers," NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. "Michelle has
cultivated an environment at Kohl's where risk-taking is encouraged, which has
never been more important than in today's dynamic retail environment. Her
extensive retail experience and instinctive understanding of what customers want
has already solidified her reputation as a transformative leader, and we can't

Trump's tariff uncertainty impacting retail
Retailers still stocking up ahead of possible tariffs, but more slowly
Imports at the nation's major retail container ports will remain at high levels
this summer but are expected to grow only modestly compared with last year's
rush to bring merchandise into the country ahead of scheduled tariff increases,
according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released today by the
National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates.
"Retailers still want to protect their customers against potential price
increases that would come with any additional tariffs, but with the latest
proposed tariffs on hold for now and warehouses bulging, there's only so much
they can do," NRF Vice President for Supply Chain and Customs Policy Jonathan
Gold said.

entertaining, bringing the outside indoors and recreational activities. The
theme is explored through a mix of curated merchandise from more than 70
brands and community-focused programming. Over the span of two months

Purple Heart Veteran & S-TRON Warehouse Logistics Manager Receives Gift of a
Lifetime: A Mortgage-Free Home on Long Island
Pictured center, left to right, are Kevin Palacios, Warehouse Logistics
Manager at S-TRON,
and
Pete Matchull, President of S-TRON.
Kevin Palacios, the Warehouse Logistics Manager for S-TRON, received a
gift he never could have expected on Tuesday, June 25, 2019. The Fairway
Foundation gave this twice-injured, Purple Heart vet the well-deserved gift of a
mortgage-free home.
Steve Probst with Fairway Independent Mortgage Corp. said that the Fairway
Foundation spent the last five years raising the $200,000 necessary to make this
dream come true. The home was fully furnished and completely renovated.
Volunteers of the Foundation realize how incredibly difficult it is for our
veterans to re-integrate into society after careers in the military and for
many, the desire to own a home is simply a dream. Our military service members
don’t make huge salaries and need a place to live when they return home. Many of
these veterans need special accommodations for injuries they received resulting
from their military duty.
Palacios, a single father, admitted that finding housing has been difficult
since getting out of the military in 2012. Wendy Lepkoff, a board member of the
National Association of Remodeling Industry, explained that giving a free house
to someone such as Palacios is just one way Americans can thank veterans for
their sacrifice to our country. Kevin, we thank you for your service and that of
millions of other military veterans.

'Rapidly Maturing Cybercrime Economy'
Cyber-Attacks Cost Global Firms $45B in 2018
BEC a $1.3B Money Maker for Cyber-Criminals; Ransomware Losses Spike 60%
Cyber-criminals are getting better at monetizing their attacks, with $45bn lost
last year alone in two million incidents, according to Internet Society’s
Online Trust
Alliance (OTA).
The group’s new
Cyber Incident & Breach Trends Report comprises information from the
FBI, Risk Based Security, the Identity Theft Resource Center and other sources.
It paints the picture of a rapidly maturing cybercrime economy in which
both tried-and-tested and emerging techniques are being used in highly effective
ways to generate illicit profits for the black hats.
One example of this is ransomware: although overall infections declined
20% from 2017 figures, losses spiked by 60% as attackers focused on
higher value business targets.
As reported by the FBI, Business Email Compromise (BEC) has also become a
major money-maker for cyber-criminals, netting them $1.3bn in 2018 – double
the figure of a previous year.
The report also warned of a 78% increase in digital supply chain attacks of the
sort seen with groups using Magecart code to infect e-commerce sites. It claimed
that two-thirds of organizations have suffered an attack costing on average $1.1
million, and estimated that half of all cyber-attacks last year involved the
supply chain.
On the plus side, there was a 3.2% decrease in reported data breaches last
year, and the number of exposed records also dropped in 2018 from the
previous year.
Still, the Internet Society claimed that 95% of breaches are preventable.
It urged all organizations to put in place a tested incident response plan, to
train employees on an ongoing basis and to continually review security, data
management and privacy practices.

GDPR Regulators Scrutinize Security Gaps in
Setting Fines
U.K. Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham said her office considered
cybersecurity gaps, among other factors, in proposing that Marriott
International Inc. and British Airways’ parent company pay the biggest fines
to date under Europe’s data-privacy laws.
In an interview with WSJ Pro Cybersecurity, Ms. Denham said the companies' size,
the number of people affected and the length of time that hackers had access to
data before they were detected factored into the U.K. regulator’s calculation of
the potential fines, revealed this week.
International Consolidated Airlines Group SA faces a $230 million penalty
for General Data Protection Regulation violations, while Marriott would be on
the hook for $124 million related to poor security measures. Both companies
disclosed the data breaches in question last year.

Will California Privacy Law Be a Model for Other States?
When
it goes into effect in 2020, the California Consumer Privacy Act will give
citizens of that state greater control over their personal data. Ginger
Armbruster, the chief privacy officer for the city Seattle, believes this
trend toward greater personal privacy will spread across the U.S.
"What it means is that security professionals and privacy professionals need to
pay attention because of potential liability," Armbruster says.
In a video interview at Information Security Media Group's recent Fraud and
Breach Summit in Seattle, Armbruster describes:
-
Why being compliant with the EU's General
Data Protection Regulation does not mean your organization is ready for CCPA
compliance;
-
How new demands for privacy are sweeping
through the U.S.;
-
How businesses and government organizations
are working together on privacy issues.
As the city of Seattle's chief privacy officer, Armbruster leads a team of
privacy specialists in the execution of the city's privacy program, following a
principles-based approach to the city's management of the public's personal and
sensitive information.

Cashless future in Canada? Not so fast
Backlash could be similar to frustration over self-checkout
Chances are, you don’t have cash on you right now. According to Payments Canada,
there are steep declines in the frequency of cash use: 42% of Canadian consumers
use cash less than four times a month, compared to 20% in 2018. While digital
payments will no doubt continue to grow, not everyone is ready to make the
leap into a cashless future.
While it’s tough to say if a similar backlash would happen in Canada, there
aren’t a lot of retailers here rushing to adopt cashless, says Michael LeBlanc,
senior retail advisor at Retail Council of Canada. “These aren’t the days when
you can turn customers away. I’m not sure why you would eliminate the
potential of having customers in such a competitive marketplace.”
He adds that the cashless discussion is similar to that of self-checkout and
automated checkout. “If you talk to three customers, you will hear three
different things—some don’t find it convenient, some find it very convenient,
some find it convenient occasionally. That’s not dissimilar with cash.”
Andreas Park, associate professor of finance at the University of Toronto,
points to the ongoing backlash against self-checkouts, with shoppers complaining
they have to do the work for the retailer. Justin Ferrabee, chief operating
officer at Payments Canada, notes that taking away a payment method for a
back-office savings has a high cost on topline sales because people make choices
based on the convenience of paying.

Security is biggest IT priority for Canadian businesses, but limited budgets
posing a challenge
47% of respondents indicated their security budget for the year has increased,
while 34% indicated it remained flat. Additionally, 67% said they have a plan
in place to respond to a security breach, while 16% noted they did not. 17%
of respondents were not sure if their organization had a plan in place.
Security was the top-ranked IT priority for the year (23%), and cloud
computing (18%) also remains an important consideration, along with storage
consolidation and optimization (14%). While security budgets increased for many
respondents, a limited budget was cited as the main IT challenge for
organizations (38%). Limited resources/staff was cited by 23%, followed by
limited time at 16%. Security and managing risk (13%) and lack of
training/technical expertise (10%) were other challenges.

Beware of Craigslist gift card scam: More than $600 stolen by clever criminal
Victim Wants Home Depot to 'Tighten Up' Self-Checkout & Gift Card Transactions
A woman from Metro Vancouver has a word of advice for anyone trying to sell a
gift card on Craigslist: beware of anyone asking for photos of key information
from the card, which could help them to use the card without your knowledge. It
began months ago when Sharon's grown daughter had initially tried to sell a $632
gift card for Home Depot on Craigslist. A person, posing as a buyer, was able to
ask for just enough information like a partial photo of the card and its
barcode — and then steal the entire amount.
Sharon has questions for Home Depot, like how the thief was able to use a photo
of part of the barcode without a PIN, to clear the gift card of its value. The
thief was able to use just enough information at a Surrey store self-checkout,
and Sharon believes that's also a part of the problem. "I think they need to
tighten up how they allow people go through self-checks and particularly a gift
card."

Amazon Dominates Minds of Canadians Purchasing Online: Expert
The research, Rethink eCommerce by Reprise Digital, a digital marketing agency,
found that in the last year 63 per cent of those surveyed used Amazon to

per cent of Canadian households hold a Prime membership.
“We do know that Amazon dominates the minds of Canadians when they purchase
online. It also is front and centre as we work with our clients across the
eCommerce space. From a purchase perspective in the study, 75 per cent of
respondents shopped on Amazon in the past six months and the next closest
retailers in the Canadian market are Walmart at 31 per cent and Costco 29 per
cent. There’s a significant difference between number one and the rest.”

Edmonton vape shop owners push back against police anti-vaping measures
Police announced late June that they would visit vape retailers this summer to
ensure compliance with the provincial Tobacco and Smoking Reduction Act —
specifically sections prohibiting sales to minors, advertising tobacco products
and selling flavoured products. But vape store owners argue this police
enforcement isn’t just misguided, it’s also baseless.
The EPS say they will issue hefty non-compliance fines to businesses —
after an initial warning, a first offence could come with a fine of up to
$10,000, and any subsequent offences could end in a ticket of up to $100,000.
But if police walked into Kreger’s store tomorrow and issued him a fine, he says
he wouldn’t pay it. Kreger says an ideal conclusion to this conflict would be
for the EPS to wait until the province passes a revised Tobacco and Smoking
Reduction Act before carrying out any enforcement. He also wants business
owners like himself to have a seat at the table in any policy discussions.

There’s a surprise in these Amazon packages: A
ticket to jail for would-be thieves
Anaheim Police use GPS bait boxes to nab porch pirates
To stop porch pirates from stealing online orders, people have tried just about
everything: boxes of smelly dog poop, noisy shotgun blanks, an explosion of
glitter, plus security cameras, special storage units and even giving delivery
workers a key to the house.
Now Anaheim police are giving it a try, using decoy deliveries armed with GPS
tracking that can lead cops right to thieves.
The agency’s use of GPS bait packages – it’s the first in Orange County to go
public with such a program – launched in May and is “in the infancy stage,”
Anaheim Sgt. Jon Yepes said, but the department has already made four arrests –
and more are likely to follow.
Anaheim police only recently began counting package thefts separately from other
burglaries, but Yepes said department data shows about 200 packages are
reported stolen each year to police.
Amazon provided its recognizable “smile” boxes and branded packing tape, said
Sgt. Darrin Lee, who along with Yepes heads the department’s burglary and auto
theft division.
Police fill the boxes with items worth at least $950 – the minimum that
warrants a felony charge – and a GPS device that’s about the size of a
checkbook or smartphone. Then they find a porch with security cameras in a
high-traffic area where people will see the package, and they wait.
Sometimes the sting pays off almost immediately. The week of the July 4
holiday, a bait box was snagged within five minutes. Software alerts police
when the package has been moved and shows a real-time “breadcrumb trail,”
pinging the GPS unit every few seconds and marking its path of travel on an
online map.
Tracking data shows the speed the package is moving, so police know whether it’s
being carried on foot, on a bike or in a car. Dispatchers update patrol
officers, who then quickly move in to stop the person or vehicle with the
package before it can be handed off or ditched.

How in-app bot fraud ruins the online shopping
experience
Bots affect all apps, everywhere—and ecommerce apps are no exception. There’s a
whole host of ways bots can sabotage them, including the following:
Swooping up high-demand products
Today’s exclusive product drops or ticket releases can sell out in a matter of
seconds, and it’s often due to bots designed to scalp products in high demand.
These can be programmed to swoop up products before legitimate users ever have a
chance to click the Buy button. This forces legitimate customers to purchase
these items at highly marked-up resale prices, creates a poor shopping
experience with the brand, and disincentivizes loyal customers.
Staging log-in attacks
Bots leverage lists of stolen credentials to hack into user accounts, and once
in, they can use these real accounts—along with saved credit card information—to
buy products either from the account itself or through credit card skimming.
Skewing analytics metrics
Bots can dramatically skew your data—introducing huge spikes in traffic from
particular regions, where these bots are programmed, and creating
legitimate-looking interest in certain products. If undetected, the data can go
on to skew retailers’ feedback loops and retargeting strategies.

Layton, UT: Recent Ross Stores thefts possibly
tied to Multimillion Dollar Criminal Enterprise
The recent arrests of three people in Layton for allegedly shoplifting at a Ross
store may be tied to a much bigger racket, according to court documents. In
March, Helix Rodrigeuz-Cepero, 30, Yunier Nodarse-Hernandez, 37, and Idalmys
Rodriguez-Hernandez, 49, all of Florida, were arrested and later charged in
Davis County's 2nd District Court with theft by receiving stolen property, a
first-degree felony.
But the investigation into the trio continued after their arrests, according
to a newly unsealed search warrant affidavit filed in June in 2nd District
Court. When Cepero was arrested, Layton police found more than $7,000 worth
of stolen merchandise in his car from the Ross store he allegedly just robbed,
the warrant states, including 27 pairs of shoes. Investigators also found
multiple receipts from Federal Express in the car "showing large amounts of
packages being shipped to Florida," according to the warrant.
The jail report states that "hundreds of pounds of parcels (were) shipped
from Colorado and Utah over the past several weeks. There were also receipts
and documents showing that this group traveled from Florida stopping at cities
along the way." Charging documents updated that figure to show more than
1,100 pounds of merchandise worth more than $30,000 were shipped to Florida by
the group.
Police believe Cepero and his crew were stealing from stores across the nation,
including Ross stores in Salt Lake County and Farmington, the warrant states, by
removing security tags from merchandise and walking out with it.

Having a strategy or a plan about everything you do is important if you expect
to win long term. Daily victories are nothing without a long-term plan. They
fade quickly and leave the audience expecting more, which only a plan and
strategy will satisfy. So after your next victory, ask yourself what am I going
to do next?
