BLS: Workplace Shooting Fatalities Up 26% in 2016
2018 Study - At Least 300 Fatalities Annually
With spate of workplace shootings, offices devote more resources to
security, experts say
The days of an open-door policy where employees and visitors could move
freely about work premises are over, security experts say.
John Dony, director of the Campbell Institute at the nonprofit National Safety
Council. “It was only in the past two or three years when we’ve seen a much
bigger spate of events at office workplaces as well as factory floors has there
been a turn in attention to that.”
In 2016, nearly 400 people died from bullet wounds at work, an increase of
26% - 83 shootings since 2015.
Companies have focused much of their attention on tightening access through
technology like electronic badges and video surveillance, rather than bolstering
security with gun-carrying guards, Dony said.
The most secure buildings prevent a familiar lunch vendor from entering a work
area, said Robert McCrie, deputy chair of the Department of Security, Fire, and
Emergency Management at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Some buildings
have extended monitoring to the elevators, remotely controlling where a visitor
can go.
McCrie envisions that technology advancing further. Casinos use video
analytics to identify people who are banned from the premises and eventually,
retailers and offices will too, he said.

71 Cities Across America Require "Verified"
Response to Security Alarms
NBAA: 94% of All Alarms Are False - IACP Says 98%
Some cities have issued fines for a false activation since the late nineties
while other ordinances allow a "non-response" when a business or home has
had repeated false alarms.
The exception to the rule is when a hold-up, panic or medical emergency alarm is
activated.
Other cities have outsourced collection of false alarm fines and consumer
education to a company called CryWolf Services.
Other cities have created ordinances that make the alarm company responsible
for false alarms and issue fines to the company instead of the alarm user.
False alarms expected to triple in the next five years.

FBI, ICE find state driver’s license photos
are a gold mine
for facial-recognition searches
A cache of records shared with The Washington Post reveals that agents are
scanning millions of Americans’ faces without their knowledge or consent.
Thousands of facial-recognition requests, internal documents and emails over the
past five years, obtained through public-records requests by Georgetown Law
researchers and provided to The Washington Post, reveal that federal
investigators have turned state departments of motor vehicles databases into the
bedrock of an unprecedented surveillance infrastructure.
Since 2011, the FBI has logged more than 390,000 facial-recognition searches of
federal and local databases, including state DMV databases, the Government
Accountability Office
said
last month, and the records show that federal investigators have forged daily
working relationships with DMV officials. In Utah, FBI and ICE agents logged
more than 1,000 facial-recognition searches between 2015 and 2017, the records
show. Names and other details are hidden, though dozens of the searches are
marked as having returned a “possible match.” washingtonpost.com

Tempe,
AZ: Starbucks: 6 Police Officers asked to leave - they made 1

Took Corporate the Entire Weekend to Respond -
Talk about Slow Response - Media Field Day
Starbucks has apologized. Starbucks has apologized to police in Arizona after
six officers said they were asked to leave one of the coffee chain’s stores last
week because another customer said the officers made them feel unsafe. The
incident was brought to light by the Tempe Officers Association, and soon the
hashtag #DumpStarbucks started trending on Twitter. But even as some people
online voiced concerns about the perceived hostility to law enforcement, others
said the encounter highlighted distrust of police in a city where an officer’s
fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy earlier this year has sparked criticism of
police’s use of force.

2019 June Job Cut Report: Retail Leads All

QUARTERLY JOB CUT ANNOUNCEMENTS FALL 26% FROM Q1; YTD CUTS UP 35%
Employers announced 41,977 cuts in June, down 28% from the 58,577 cuts announced
in May. Despite the monthly drop, June’s cuts are 13% higher than the 37,202
cuts announced in June of last year. This is the eleventh consecutive month
job cuts are higher than the corresponding month the year prior.
U.S.-based employers announced plans to cut 140,577 jobs from their payrolls in
the second quarter of this year, down 26% from the 190,410 cuts announced in the
first quarter. Despite the drop, Q2 cuts are 34% higher than the 104,800 cuts
announced in the same quarter last year.
Last quarter’s total is the highest for the second quarter since 2015, when
147,458 cuts were recorded. So far this year, employers have announced plans to

Redefining the Global Store Experience with
Self-Checkout
U.S. World's Largest Self-Checkout Market
675,000 Self-Checkouts by 2024
A new report from RBR, the London-based firm which tracks the global
self-checkout penetration rate and market shares among equipment providers
said self-checkout sales reached a new high in 2018.
More than 80,000 self-checkout units were shipped worldwide last year, as both
new users and re-adopters invested in the technology, the firm said in its
recently released annual report. Front-end store transformations continue in the
U.S., the world’s largest self-checkout market, as retailers invest in
store environments. Some retailers are installing more units and upgrading older
terminals.
Albertsons, which had previously withdrawn self-checkout machines,
is rolling out the technology on a larger scale than before, according to RBR.
Albertsons recently announced it was implementing Toshiba Global Commerce
Solutions’ self-checkout systems.
Another notable self-checkout development in the U.S involved Costco. The
warehouse club operator disclosed in June that it was testing around 125 self
checkout units, reversing a 2013 decision to remove some terminals,
according to RBR.
Despite the technology already being well established in Europe, 2018 saw
an increase in investment in self-checkout solutions from some of the region’s
largest grocery players, from hypermarket chains to discounters. France’s
Carrefour and Germany’s Lidl rolled out units in a number of countries, while a
range of domestic retailers piloted the technology, including Pyaterochka in
Russia and Megamark Group in Italy. Pilots and rollouts continued in Latin
America too, where retailers have implemented self-checkout solutions only
relatively recently, with activity up in countries including Brazil, Colombia
and Mexico.
Alan Burt who leads RBR’s research forecasts the number of global
self-checkout installations will reach 675,000 by 2024.

Self-checkout in Retailing:
Understanding the Risk and Managing the Problem
with Adrian Beck, Emeritus Professor, University of Leicester
Thu, Jul 18, 2019 | 2 PM - 3 PM EDT
As retailers continue to invest in developing ever
more ‘frictionless’ shopping environments, the use of a range of
self-checkout technologies is becoming ever more conspicuous across
a broader range of retail formats. While undoubtedly offering both
retailers and consumers a range of potential benefits, these
technologies have also been found to negatively impact upon retail
losses.
This Webinar brings together the latest research on not only the
scale and extent of the problem of self-scan-related losses but also
the emerging strategies and approaches that may help retailers to
begin to manage them more effectively. Focusing particularly upon
the role video technologies might play in controlling self-scan
losses, this Webinar will provide detailed and thought-provoking
insights into an increasingly important part of the rapidly
developing retail landscape.

Balancing BOPIS & Loss Prevention
Buy Online Pickup in Store (BOPIS) is becoming a must-have service for retailers
of all sizes. Consumers now expect the convenience of online ordering,
especially through mobile devices, and quick pick-up no matter how big the
retailer is. Unfortunately, the percentage of fraudulent BOPIS purchases is
above average with retailers reporting a loss of 3-5% (with some as high as 10%
or more).
Enabling the convenience of BOPIS without forsaking massive loss is the delicate
balance that Loss Prevention professionals now face which is why we've created
this easy guide to balancing BOPIS and LP.
This whitepaper covers:
-
Benefits & Challenges to BOPIS that every retailer should know
-
The key
indicators present during cases of BOPIS-related fraud
-
Why
analytics & reporting are at the heart of any successful BOPIS strategy

Disaster recovery readiness is essential for hybrid and multi-cloud strategies
Of the respondents who had implemented a hybrid or multi-cloud strategy, which
was just over half of the respondent group, 87% considered it to be an
important part of their disaster recovery readiness. The ability to shift
workloads from one cloud to another was a key factor, with 34% of those who have
done so citing disaster recovery as the motivation.
Use of the cloud within a disaster recovery plan offers many benefits, including
reliability and cost efficiency, as there is no need to invest in infrastructure
that may never be used.
Cloud resources can be offsite, mitigating the risk of a disaster affecting the
main office location, and can be accessed (and paid for) only as needed. A
multi-cloud disaster recovery strategy offers additional peace of mind that
critical systems and data will remain easily accessible when needed.
Although hybrid and multi-cloud deployments are widely acknowledged as good
practice, IT professionals highlight complexity, training gaps and lack of
internal resources in their hesitancy to deploy using multiple clouds.
Nevertheless, more than half the respondents were operating in a multi-cloud
environment, with nearly one in ten using five or more clouds within their
organizations.
“What we’re hearing from customers, and is consistent with our survey findings,
is that they’re looking for ways to simplify and streamline their cloud
deployment and management,” said Ziad Lammam, vice president of product
management for Teradici.

Amazon's Headache - Minnesota Fulfillment Center
Plans to Strike on Prime Day
The work stoppage at the Shakopee, Minnesota, facility would last six hours on
July 15, the first day of the now 48-hour online sale. A "handful" of Amazon
engineers also plan to fly to the state to demonstrate with the striking
workers, according to Bloomberg.
Workers at the facility have asked for more permanent jobs and for reduced
productivity quotas on fulfillment center quotas. One of the employees
organizing the strike told Bloomberg that workers want to discuss what goes into
making Amazon's e-commerce business model possible and "put pressure on Amazon
to protect us and provide safe, reliable jobs."
By the end of 2018, Amazon had 647,500 full-time and part-time employees (the
company does not break down the precise mix of full-time and part-time workers
in its fulfillment centers). The company indicated in its
most recent 10-K that its U.S. employees are not organized or unionized. For
years in financial filings, the company has said simply, "We consider our
employee relations to be good."

Grubhub Denies Allegations Of ‘Fake’ Web Domains
Delivery giant Grubhub has been accused of creating websites for restaurants
without their permission and trying to squeeze extra commission from it,
according to a report by the
Los Angeles Times.
The company’s Chief Executive Matt Maloney called the allegations “outright
false,” saying that according to the terms and conditions, the company was
allowed to purchase web domains and create websites advertising the restaurants
it used.
It was recently reported that
Grubhub registered around 23,000 web domains without the consent of
restaurant owners. The move was perceived as an attempt to get a larger share of
commissions and to block restaurants from building their own online presence.
“We do not set up websites without the permission of a restaurant,” Maloney
wrote in an email to employees, according to the Times report. “We had a very
clear provision in every one of our restaurant contracts saying we would provide
this service to bring them more orders.”

Walmart’s e-commerce biz is reportedly racking up
$1 billion in losses and that’s only one problem it has
While Walmart has been making investments — like buying Jet.com for $3.3 billion
— to try to compete with Jeff Bezos’ behemoth, it’s been a drag on the big-box
business’ profitability. So much so that Walmart is now projecting losses of
over $1 billion for its U.S. e-commerce division, helmed by Marc Lore, this
year, on sales of between $21 billion and $22 billion,
according to a report by Vox, citing discussions with multiple sources
familiar with those financials.
Frustration has been growing within Walmart as these losses on Lore’s team
mount, the report said. And now the company is reportedly pressuring Lore’s
team to sell off some of the digitally native brands it’s acquired in an
attempt to amass more inventory and gain the expertise of younger, e-commerce
leaders.
Vox reported Bonobos, Modcloth and plus-sized fashion brand Eloquii — which
it bought last year — are still unprofitable.
And the report said Walmart won’t make any more acquisitions of digitally
native brands for at least the next year, citing three sources, “barring an
incredible acquisition opportunity that is just too good to pass up.”
The company also recently
announced a major overhaul at Jet, taking steps to more fully integrate the
e-commerce platform into its own business. As part of the changes, Jet president
Simon Belsham is expected to leave the company in August, with that role
dissolving entirely.

Easiest Job in The World
Giving Advice & Sounding Like a Guru or Dalai Lama
As long as you're well read on the subject, have some battle
scars, experienced some major loses, have won more than you've lost, and have
the ability and humility to admit and know your mistakes then you can sound
great giving advice.
The real issue - the real key is being able to react fast on your feet when
the heat is on. That's the challenge for everybody regardless of what you
hear in the movies or on TV or where ever.
Very, very few people have the ability to instantly respond during the heat of a
verbal battle with a response that not only shuts them down but also allows them
to win if needed or just proves your point.
Most try to change the direction, switch blame to another person or modify the
subject and avoid the conflict.
The good ones, they back off a little, even physically, and apply those
disarming skills that are the hot topic right now.
If you can modify them slightly, shroud them behind active listening, and buy
time for another day. Then you delay the ninth inning for a time when you're
ready.
The really good ones know that if something becomes a verbal battle then its
usually been building up in that other person for some time and they've already
had the conversation in their heads or maybe even with another colleague. And
the only way out usually is to buy time, hear every word so you can replay it
accurately and find the point or two - or reason that sparked it. Because some
times it isn't what started it.
And the great ones usually know it when they're walking up to it, before
the battle even starts.
With the point being - giving advice is easy - playing the game and winning is
hard - the key is knowing what you're walking into and when nothing works just
buy time and wait for another day, which fits the old expression - Lose with
dignity - Win with humility.
Just a Thought, Gus
