The Division Executive Vice President of Loss Prevention & Global Sustainability at Gap Inc. safeguards the jeans and T-shirts in 3,600 stores worldwide, but that is just the start. White oversees executive protection efforts. He manages a global security operations center and ensures business continuity. “We build these great contingency plans for every situation that you can imagine, everything from wildfires to disruptive events,” he says.

He has spent 30 years in retail security building up his bag of tricks. Before coming to Gap Inc. in 2000, he had lead LP roles at Mervyns and Marshall Field’s. He has been an industry leader as well, serving on the board of the National Retail Federation for a dozen years.

Security Must-Haves

To manage security across a vast enterprise, you need the right people on board, but you also need those people to understand and appreciate what White calls the, “non-negotiables, the things that we really want to make sure happen every day no matter what.”

That includes a commitment to physical safety as the foremost priority. “The safety of our customers and visitors – that’s really the overriding thing,” he says. A respect for established operating guidelines and practices follows close behind.

UK Retail Sector Calls On Government to Act On Violence & Abuse
A group of businesses and trade bodies representing the retail sector have written to the home secretary and other ministers, calling for more to be done to tackle widespread violence and abuse against shopworkers.

The letter, signed by retailers and groups including the Association of Convenience Stores, British Retail Consortium, Usdaw and the Charity Retailers Association, calls for “bold, ambitious and collective action” to deliver meaningful change that will reduce levels of violence and abuse, both from central government, the wider justice system and from retailers themselves.

The letter makes a series of recommendations to government for tackling violence and abuse, so that the nearly 3 million retail colleagues in the UK no longer have to face violence and abuse on a daily basis. Recommendations made in the letter include: tougher sentences for those who attack shopworkers, change to the out of court disposals system (eg fixed penalty notices) which is failing to have an impact on reoffending, and a full review into the response of police forces to incidents of violence in the retail sector.

The calls come as the Home Office closes its 12-week call for evidence on violence and abuse. Responses from thousands of shops and shopworkers have been submitted, highlighting the true cost of violence and abuse and frustration around the way that offenders are being dealt with.

Association of Convenience Stores, chief executive James Lowman, said: “Retailers and staff that have been subjected to abuse often give up on reporting crimes to the police because nothing is done, and that needs to change. We need fundamental reform of the justice system to deter criminals from committing lower level offences, more consistent police response to show retailers that they take incidents of violence and abuse seriously, and ultimately tougher sentences to tackle reoffending rates when the worst does happen. NYPD Preps for Independence Day Celebration
70,000 Combustible Shells Exploding at the Brooklyn Bridge
Department officials expect millions of spectators to flock to viewing locations and other areas in Manhattan and Brooklyn to watch Macy’s 43rd annual fireworks show over the East River. The NYPD will also deploy drones, blocker vehicles and security checkpoints for the celebration.

Personnel from the NYPD Intelligence Bureau and the Counterterrorism Bureau are also monitoring the event for terroristic threats that may originate domestically or overseas, police said.

NYPD will begin road closures in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn at 2 p.m. on Thursday to prepare for the Macy’s show. The fireworks will begin at 9:20 p.m. and last 25 minutes, according to the event organizers.

The 2019 Macy’s celebration will entail roughly 70,000 combustible shells exploding in the vicinity of the Brooklyn Bridge over the East River, event organizers and police said. wsj.com

How Retailers Can Ensure Their Stores Are Safe and Secure
Retailers face a number of threats, some specific to their brand and merchandise, others based on their geographic location. Keeping employees and customers safe requires a two-pronged approach: establishing the right culture and providing a safe and secure physical environment.

For employees, this means investing in security awareness training for staff, which is simply a matter of them one, paying attention (e.g., implementing a “no smartphone use” policy when on shift), two, knowing what to look for and, three, knowing what to do.

Ultimately it needs to start at the top. Senior management of every organization should document, support, fund and adhere to security policies, thus setting the example for the troops. It also starts at the beginning: Are employees properly vetted prior to being hired? The internal threat in the retail environment is a greater vulnerability than the external.

Finally, technological security solutions are growing exponentially with the incorporation of video and audio analytics against artificial intelligence. Such technology allows for the automatic identification of “suspicious behavior” and real threats such as the detection of a firearm via video analytics or the use of audio analytics to detect gunshots. mytotalretail.com

Nike Must Face Retail Workers’ Suit Over Pay for Security Bag Checks
The Ninth Circuit Friday revived a class action suit against Nike that will test how much unpaid time workers can challenge under California law. Lead plaintiff Isaac Rodriguez sued Nike in 2014, claiming the global sportswear giant cheated him and other employees at 34 retail stores in California out of payments for time spent waiting for and going through inspections before leaving work at shift endings and breaks.

In September 2017, U.S. District Judge Beth Labson Freeman in San Jose granted Nike’s motion for summary judgment, finding that the inspections, which took less than 10 minutes, were “de minimis,” or minimal, under the standard established in the 1984 Ninth Circuit ruling in Lindow v. United States. The Ninth Circuit reversed Freeman’s ruling Friday, finding that a subsequent state court ruling has changed the legal landscape. courthousenews.com

Florida governor approves felony threshold increase
Felony theft threshold goes from $300 to $750
Florida will soon see the first change in 35 years to the legal threshold for felony theft after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a criminal-justice package into law on Friday. Raising the threshold that triggers felony theft charges from $300 to $750 was one of the biggest changes in the bill (HB 7125).

At $300, the current threshold for felony theft is the second-lowest in the U.S., meaning that stealing a cellphone could hand a person a multiyear jail sentence. Petty thefts, on the other hand, have a maximum sentence of one year. The increase is intended to make the repercussions for theft more up-to-date.

The bill, HB 7125, now requires that the threshold be reviewed every five years. Bill sponsor Rep. Paul Renner, R-Palm Coast wrote in a statement to the Tampa Bay Times that the higher threshold will increase employment opportunities for former felons seeking employment.”

In states that have already raised felony theft thresholds, a May 2018 study from Pew Charity Trusts found that there was no change in property crime rates. Thirty-nine states have raised their thresholds since 2000, according to the study. miamiherald.com tampabay.com

Alarm Firm Monitronics Files Chapter 11 Petition
Alarm system provider Monitronics has filed bankruptcy to implement a restructuring plan that would reduce its $1.8 billion debt burden by nearly half.

Monitronics, a subsidiary of Ascent Capital Group, provides monitored home and business alarm systems to about 922,000 customers under the Brinks Home Security brand. It has an exclusive, long-term licensing agreement with Brinks Co.

Since 2013, he said, the company has made certain acquisitions that increased its customer base and debt burden. In August 2013, it acquired Security Networks and in February 2015 it bought LiveWatch Security, a do-it-yourself home security firm. cfo.com

Sensormatic Releases SaaS Loss-Prevention and Inventory-Management System
The company's RFID- and BLE-based TrueVUE solution is designed to offer a low cost of entry for retailers looking to use RFID to track stock and capture shrinkage data in order to improve inventory accuracy.

Offering what it calls an easily deployed and scaled inventory-management solution, technology company Sensormatic has released a software-as-a-service (SaaS) version of its TrueVUE cloud-based software platform. The system leverages technology to capture data about merchandise as it is received, displayed and sold, and when it leaves a store. Other features and technologies can be added to the solution as well, such as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), to track the movements of shoppers and provide traffic visibility.

The SaaS TrueVUE system is designed to enable businesses to quickly build a global inventory-management solution that can scale as a company or supply chain grows, according to Brent Brown, the firm's VP and general manager of global inventory intelligence. The solution leverages Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to enable retailers to view online inventory data across a company's enterprise.

Sensormatic developed the solution to serve retailers' increasing need to provide "buy online, pick up in store" (BOPIS) sales models. With BOPIS, the company indicates, inventory visibility and accuracy are essential to ensuring that a product which a customer has purchased online is waiting for him or her at the store selected during that purchase. The SaaS system enables a "unified commerce approach," Brown explains, in which suppliers, retailers and logistics providers can share data. rfidjournal.com

Cybersecurity Risks Threatening Industry Deals
73% - Undisclosed Data Breach - Immediate Deal Breaker
66% Regret Making the Deal Due to Cybersecurity Deals
The study provides insight into the growing concern of cybersecurity risks and the importance of cybersecurity assessment during mergers and acquisitions (M&A).

Fifty-three percent of respondents reported that their organization had encountered a critical cybersecurity issue or incident that put a mergers and acquisitions (M&A) deal in jeopardy and 65 percent of respondents said they had experienced buyers’ remorse because of cybersecurity concerns after closing a deal.

According to the study:

● 73 percent of respondents agreed that technology acquisition is their top priority for their M&A strategy over the next 12 months—and, 62 percent agreed that not only does their company face significant cybersecurity risk by acquiring new companies, they also expressed that cyber risk is their biggest concern post-acquisition.

● 72 percent of respondents considered IoT devices (printers, smart lighting, VoIP phones, security cameras, etc.) as most vulnerable to external adversarial actors. securitymagazine.com

Prosecutors Say Jun Ying Sold Stock Before Data Breach Was Made Public
Ying is the second Equifax executive to plead guilty to insider trading charges stemming from the 2017 data breach. In July 2018, Sudhakar Reddy Bonthu, a former manager at Equifax, pleaded guilty to similar charges and received eight months of home confinement, federal prosecutors said.

Over the course of the last two years, the data breach has cost Atlanta-based Equifax $1.4 billion, which includes overhauling its information security program. govinfosecurity.com

New York Legislature passes bill that toughens breach notification standards
The New York State Legislature last month passed The Stop Hacks and Improve Electronic Data Security (SHIELD) Act, which is intended to strengthen the state’s data security laws by more explicitly defining when and how businesses must notify the public and attorney general of a data breach incident.

The proposed legislation, introduced by State Senator Kevin Thomas (D) and Assemblymember Michael DenDekker (D), now sits on the desk of Governor Andrew Cuomo, awaiting his signature.

Under current law, businesses must disclose a breach only when it is reasonably believed that an unauthorized person acquires certain personal and private information. But SHIELD would lower the threshold so that the reasonable belief that someone merely accessed the information is enough to require a notification.

“This distinction could be especially significant in the ransomware context in which private information may not be stolen, but nonetheless may be accessed in a way that would now constitute a data breach and may trigger notification obligations,” explained Joseph Moreno, a partner in Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP’s White Collar Defense and Investigations Group, in an analysis posted by Mondaq.

Moreover, the new law would vastly expand the pool of companies that must follow these notification regulations. Current law applies only to parties conducting business in New York, but under SHIELD, any entity that deals in private info of New York residents must comply. scmagazine.com

How Amazon and the Cops Set Up an Elaborate Sting Operation That Accomplished Nothing
For Amazon, fear is good for business.

If customers fear their neighbors, and fear they might steal a package, customers are less likely to be mad at Amazon if they don’t get a package they ordered. They’re also more likely to buy an Amazon-owned Ring doorbell camera, which is marketed as way of surveilling your stoop for package deliveries and package thieves—especially on Neighbors, the Ring-owned “neighborhood watch” app.

New documents obtained by Motherboard using a Freedom of Information request show how Amazon, Ring, a GPS tracking company, and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service collaborated on a package sting operation with the Aurora, Colorado Police Department in December. The operation involved equipping fake Amazon packages with GPS trackers, and surveilling doorsteps with Ring doorbell cameras in an effort to catch someone stealing a package on tape.

The documents show the design and implementation of a highly elaborate public relations stunt, which was designed both to endear Amazon and Ring with local law enforcement, and to make local residents fear the place they live. Some States Take Action to Crack Down on Porch Pirates
Nearly one American in five lost merchandise to porch pirates in 2016, according to a survey conducted by the home security firm Ring, and there’s no reason to think that the number has gone down since.

State governments are beginning to take notice of this larcenous trend. Texas is leading the way, with a new law, taking effect in September, mandating prison terms ranging between 180 days and ten years and fines of $4,000 to $10,000 for convicted porch pirates.

New Jersey is also targeting package-stealers with a newly passed Defense Against Porch Pirates Act, making package theft a fourth-degree crime if the value of the stolen goods is less than $200.

California, South Carolina, and Michigan are among the other states that are addressing the issue. According to a study by the video security company Blink, however, the states where packages are most likely to be stolen are North Dakota, Vermont, and Alaska. 247wallst.com

Company has committed more than $20 billion to acquisitions and investments since 2017, but government concerns put future deals at risk

Amazon’s deal-making style is to act quickly, quietly and frequently without investment bankers, according to people familiar with the company’s thinking. But the closer attention from Washington will likely result in Amazon throttling down on acquisitions, especially larger deals.

The pressure stems from increased calls for government to rein in tech giants. Congress plans a bipartisan examination of antitrust law and whether tech companies like Amazon are growing too powerful to the detriment of smaller rivals and customers. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.), a presidential candidate, proposes breaking up Amazon and unwinding the Whole Foods acquisition, while President Trump has criticized Amazon, suggesting the company should pay more in taxes. wsj.com

Sarasota County, FL: Seven Florida residents face charges in statewide data breach
Info used in $260,000 in retail theft
The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office charged seven south Florida residents including an employee of the Florida Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) in connection with a data breach that compromised the identity of more than 2,000 residents statewide.

A Sarasota retailer in the University Town Center reached out to SCSO detectives in May 2019 about fraudulent activity. An investigation found Roxana Ruiz, 39, and Eduardo Lamigueiro, 43, were using the personal information of unsuspecting victims to open credit card accounts for merchandise purchases exceeding $6,000. The suspects, both from Miami, were arrested on charges of Fraud, Grand Theft, and Criminal Use of Personal Identification.

Based on evidence recovered in their vehicle including cash, a handgun, several pieces of stolen merchandise, and several cellphones, detectives continued their investigation. A search warrant was executed on their cellphones which revealed dozens of images of receipts, counterfeit driver’s licenses, and personal information including addresses, birthdates, phone numbers and social security numbers of unknown people, the press release states. Based on the images, detectives determined the stolen information was used to perpetuate more than 40 transactions throughout the state of Florida, yielding an estimated $260,000 in retail theft. winknews.com

Update - Columbia, SC: $145,000 of Cell Phones stolen from Best Buy
The Richland Couty Sheriff's Department is searching for four suspects in connection with a burglary of Best Buy on Two Notch Road. Shortly after 3 a.m. on June 29th deputies were dispatched to the store because of an alarm call. After viewing surveillance video, deputies determined the suspects used a crowbar to open the business’ front automatic doors. They then pulled the second metal gate off the track to enter the store. Once inside, they went for the area with mobile phones, where they pulled cages with phones and dragged them to their vehicle. More than 150 phones were stolen totaling an estimated $142,000. wistv.com

Edwardsville, IL: Police investigating theft of $78,000 worth of razors from a warehouse
The theft was discovered after an employee spotted boxes of razors strewn about the ground in front of the loading dock door outside the DB Schenker Logistics warehouse. An employee reported that two pallets, including large boxes of Gillette razors, were missing. A witness at the business told police he saw a white pickup truck speeding through the parking lot about 9:15 p.m. May 19. Police have filed applications for search warrants, including one for a cell phone found after the theft. A supervisor told officers than one of the employees must have helped with the theft, since the pallets would have to be moved by a forklift to be loaded onto the truck. thetelegraph.com

Seal Beach, CA: Thieves hit Private Sneaker for $14,000 of merchandise, then hit a Fire Hydrant
Two men and a 17-year-old boy suspected of stealing nearly $14,000 worth of merchandise from an Private Sneaker, an athletic shoe and clothing store in Seal Beach have been arrested after a vehicle pursuit that ended with a crash into a fire hydrant and foot chase, with one found hiding in a trash can, police said Tuesday. Officers recovered 280 pieces of clothing and accessories worth nearly $14,000 from a vehicle after a burglary in Seal Beach early Sunday. ocregister.com

Chambersburg, PA: Sea Food Company Employee charged with $10,000 theft
Alfred T. Russell, 45, of Tritle Avenue, is accused of stealing several boxes of seafood from a Chambersburg business where he worked, taking it to his residence and later traveling to New York where he would sell the stolen food for extra money. therecordherald.com

Cedarburg, WI: Wisconsin Police agencies looking for suspected retail thieves
Three police agencies in Wisconsin are looking for a group of suspects who have allegedly been stealing from retail stores. On Sunday, the Cedarburg Police Department said two men stole alcohol from Walgreens while a female driver waited in the car. Jackson Police Department reported a theft at a Walgreens location on Monday afternoon, also involving two male suspects and a female that appear to be the same group. The Thiensville Police Department reported a retail theft in early June involving at least one of the same suspects. cbs58.com

Sydney, Australia: $10k of Legos found as police bust alleged shoplifting ring
Five people have been arrested over an alleged shoplifting ring in Sydney. Police said they began investigating an organised shoplifting syndicate in May this year. Three people were arrested on Friday, followed by two more on Saturday. Police alleged the man and woman arrested on Saturday stole about $10,000 worth of Lego and other property in five separate incidents. The three arrested on Friday were allegedly found with new clothes suspected of being stolen. 9news.com.au

Hampton, VA: 1 dead, another injured in shooting at Wawa
One person is dead and another is hurt following a shooting Tuesday night at a Wawa on W. Mercury Blvd. It happened just after 8:30 p.m. at the 2401 W Mercury Blvd. store, near Aberdeen Road, dispatchers say. One victim, identified as 20-year-old Hampton resident Myzhe Lewis, was pronounced dead at the scene and another man was taken to the hospital. Police say the injured man was shot multiple times, but his injuries are non life-threatening. wavy.com

Clayton, MO: Second man charged in murder of St. Louis area police officer
A second man has been charged with the murder of slain North County Police Cooperative Officer Michael Langsdorf. On Tuesday, St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell announced that he had charged Kawynn Smith, 58, with second-degree murder. Smith has a previous murder conviction from 1998. Police say Smith gave the man accused of fatally shooting Langsdorf two checks for more than $6,500 to cash at a Wellston market on June 23. newsbug.info

San Bruno, CA: Police investigating reports of shooting at Tanforan Mall
At least 2 people are injured after a shooting at a shopping mall in San Bruno, California, police said. Police responded to reports of a shooting at the Tanforan Mall on Tuesday afternoon. When officers arrived, they found two victims with gunshot wounds, San Bruno Police Chief Ed Barberini said. Both were treated by paramedics and have been taken to a local hospital, he said. Haines City Police are investigating how a 9mm Taurus handgun found its way onto a Walmart store display shelf. According to the daily activity report, Walmart reported the incident after a customer discovered the gun. Macon, GA: Felony Theft Charges filed; Pawn shop, furniture store at odds after TV theft
Responding deputies reported that felony theft warrants have been taken out for 26-year-old Travis Deshawn McNeal after he leased a television from American Home Furniture and failed to make the payments. McNeal then pawned the TV to Old South Pawn, and became late on his payments to the pawn shop, the report says. The report says McNeal leased the 55” LG Flat Screen device, worth $677.10, on May 25. McNeal had pawned the TV for $160. The manager from American Home Furniture told deputies that the pawn shop manager wouldn’t sell the TV back to American Home Furniture for less than $200. wgxa.tv

The Old School 'Us Them' Mentality
Partnerships and collaboration go well beyond the typical definition and one of the most important lessons in your career is realizing that your team includes the solution providers that deliver the tools, technology and resources that help make you successful.

One of the common mistakes I've seen over the years is not totally appreciating the role these executives and companies play in the overall success of a retailer's program. So much so that without them the program would fail.

For decades the "Us Them" mentality prevailed as one of the biggest obstacles to growth and development, when in fact these executives hold the keys to tomorrow's success.

And yes, many LP execs have transitioned to the 'Dark Side' and all of them quickly find out the true definition of rejection and friendship, but the good ones can be one of your most critical assets.

So make sure your entire team recognizes it, appreciates them, and is exhaustive in finding the best ones regardless of yesterday, because they have the answer to tomorrow's challenges.
