Shopping Centers Exploring Facial Recognition Technology

Some use technology that recognizes people’s faces but stops short of identifying, recording them

Landlords could do it all if they wanted. Facial-recognition technology has advanced to the point that U.S. malls could know shoppers’ names when they enter, watch what they buy and send them promotions to encourage repeat visits.

Industry executives say they aren’t ready to go that far, partly because of the likely backlash from privacy advocates. But some U.S. shopping centers have started to use technology that detects facial features and individuals’ paths of travel anonymously. Artificial intelligence is then used to mine that data to determine traffic patterns, worker performance and consumer reaction to displays and marketing.

NewMark Merrill Cos., which owns 80 shopping centers in California, Colorado and Illinois, has deployed facial-recognition technology at its Janss Marketplace, an outdoor mall in Thousand Oaks, Calif. NewMark plans to roll it out in four more locations.

“We definitely at the minimum want features that accurately identify who your customers are, where in the shopping centers they go, and how long they spend there,” said Sandy Sigal, NewMark’s chief executive.

Artificial intelligence is the latest technology shopping-center owners are using to cope with fast-changing consumer tastes and growth in e-commerce. Landlords are hoping they can mine insights on consumer behavior from aggregate data to demonstrate and increase the value of bricks-and-mortar.

Some U.S. retailers have been testing these applications but are loath to publicize their findings. A Brookings Institution survey last September shows there is significant opposition to the use of facial-recognition technology in public places. wsj.com

Reaping the Benefits of Struggling Chinese Firms
Taiwanese surveillance company CyberLink plans to bring its facial recognition technology to U.S. stores in a bet that it can succeed in a market where Chinese rivals are struggling to gain a foothold. CyberLink says its FaceMe software program -- which tracks shoppers' faces and analyzes their emotions -- can help brick-and-mortar stores offer shoppers more personalized service without compromising privacy.

FaceMe can identify age, gender, facial expression, time spent in the store and returning customers without maintaining a database of customer images or personal information, because it stores facial information as vector points rather than pictures. By tracking head position and orientation, the tool can determine what the customers are looking at in the store. 'Aggressive' Security Guard Cuffed Group Of Young Men Before They Entered Mall
Attorney’s representing five young African-American males announced Monday a $25 million lawsuit against a Mobile mall after alleging racially motivated harassment, violence and a security dog attack during a shopping trip less than two weeks ago.

Rodricus Johnson and Ashton Golston, both 15, Cameron Robinson and Zion Lett, both 16, and Nathanial Henderson, 20, claim they were approached by an aggressive security guard outside the Bel Air mall June 22. They hadn’t made it inside the mall before they were allegedly lined up against a wall and handcuffed.

After Robinson complained that mall security officers had racially profiled the group, a K-9 unit security guard allegedly slammed the handcuffed 16-year-old on his head and ordered his Dutch Shepherd to attack him, according to the second attorney representing the group, Justin Miller, a partner at Morgan & Morgan.

Steward and Miller said that they believe there is official security camera footage from the mall. Requests by family members of the group to watch the footage were denied by Bel Air mall, according to attorneys.

Robinson was bitten several times and later had to be hospitalized for two and half days. He said that the security guard had his hand on his gun when he first approached the group and yelled “get the f**k against the wall” before handcuffing them. al.com

No traditional checkout areas are shown in the drawings. There is a large general sales area with a section for alcohol, as well as an employee break room and storage. Trump administration wants to ban end-to-end encryption
Ban could help law enforcement but be exploited by hackers & foreign govts
The Trump administration are looking into the possibility of banning encryption techniques that cannot be broken by law enforcement, a proposal that would weaken encryption as a whole for users and businesses, and could make messaging clients like Apple's iMessage stop using end-to-end encryption.

The issues law enforcement agencies have in gaining access to evidence stored on encrypted devices or services has led to a long-running debate between governments, officials of security organizations, and tech companies over the effectiveness of encryption. While the former wants to weaken it, the latter, including Apple, are fighting to keep it strong.

Senior White House officials are said to have attended a National Security Council meeting on Wednesday, discussing the possibility of asking Congress to outlaw end-to-end encryption, three people familiar with the matter told Politico. The second-in-command officials from "several key agencies" were also reportedly in attendance at the discussion, most likely alluding to the security agencies like the FBI, CIA, and others.

A request to Congress to introduce laws banning encryption will face stiff opposition from tech companies and their customers, as it would effectively force Apple, Google, Facebook, and other service providers relying on end-to-end encryption to use weaker security. Han handed over a fake learner's permit during a traffic stop in Allamuchy, leading to his arrest for trafficking fraudulent credit and debit cards using stolen personal information, has been sentenced to three years in prison. After arresting Han, the trooper seized seven fraudulent credit cards along with a small amount of methamphetamine in Han's possession. A search of his vehicle yielded 30 more fraudulent credit and debit cards, six additional fraudulent identification cards. It was later found Han was obtaining stolen personal identifying information on the "dark web," which was used to generate fraudulent credit and debit cards. Deep Dive: How Fraud Runs Rampant In Mobile Ordering
Mobile order-ahead apps are growing more popular by the day, and restaurants are clamoring to get on board. A QSR Magazine study found that 73 percent of diners have used mobile ordering, 63 percent have at least one mobile ordering app on their phones and 35 percent use mobile ordering every time they visit QSRs.

Account Takeovers Plague the QSR Industry

Cybercriminals can obtain stolen identities for as little as $4, meaning it’s easier than ever for them to launch account takeover (ATO) attacks. They can use individuals’ credentials to gain access to accounts and then obtain stored payment information, allowing them to make purchases or drain accounts of accrued awards points.

Such attacks have plagued McDonald’s customers in Canada over the past few months, racking up thousands of dollars in fraudulent charges. One consumer in Nova Scotia reported more than $480 CAD in illicit orders over four days, while a victim in Toronto faced more than $2,000 CAD worth of charges in McFlurries, Big Macs, Chicken McNuggets and poutine. The transactions occurred in rapid succession at multiple locations, suggesting that the hacker distributed stolen data to other criminals.

Chipotle’s customers reported a similar string of attacks in April, with victims swindled out of up to $500 USD each. One victim did not even have a Chipotle account, but had used the QSR’s guest checkout option. Chipotle denied any breach of its databases or systems.

At the end of most interviews, candidates are given the opportunity to ask questions. Surprisingly enough, most candidates are unprepared for that question, itself. So take the time in your preparation to develop a few well thought out questions that reflect your knowledge of the company, their future plans and how you fit within them. Certainly your questions should also focus around the variables that increase the success of the specific position you're applying for and not deal with the benefits, salary, or work schedule, travel requirements, or expenses. As these questions will turn off an interviewer and are premature. Your questions should be a reflection of the type of executive you are and will be if they hire you and therefore should be designed to show how you'll be successful and valuable for their organization.
