The D&D Daily played major

Seeing beyond China’s tariff war impact on retailers and consumers, which is
almost impossible, and just in case you missed the
NY Times Walmart Corruption Fine article last week, as
reported in the Daily, the Trump connection to Walmart’s ultimate fine was
deliberately drawn by the NY Times writer with stating that the Obama
administration was aiming for a $600 million fine while the Trump
administration reduced it to $282 million. Subtly inserted but hoping to be
picked up. Which we haven't seen in any news outlet.
With this being the biggest and most historical FCPA case and fine ever
means that Attorney General Barr had to get the nod from Trump given the
potential media and legal impact. It's just to big for Barr do call this one
alone. Which may have also happened in the Pilot Flying J
$92 million fraud fine.

US Attorney's Attack on
Philly's DA - 1st One of Its Kind From the Fed's
As reported Friday in the Daily, the relatively new U.S. Attorney (April, 2018)
in Philadelphia took the local DA, a Democrat, to task for decriminalizing
shoplifting and made the comment that retail shoplifting was at the center of
this new don't prosecute position.
Then when we look at the other two DA's that recently made the news with their
'don't prosecute shoplifting' policies we find all three of them are Democrats.
Not that we are making this political but the facts are the facts.
The police departments in both locals are up in arms asking for resignations and
claiming the DA's didn't campaign under those positions certainly.
But now we have a U.S. Attorney, for the very first time, coming out against it
publicly and making it a point to support the retailers. A huge position
to take that clearly was approved by the administration, if not initiated by
them. Given the amount of recent press and potential impact, we wouldn't be
surprised if the White House was contacted about this national trend.
Let's keep it up! Every LP executive in North America, including Canada,
needs to be communicating this to their entire 'C' suite and Board of
Directors. Because, number one, they're the only ones that can probably make
a difference and number two, if some start to feel the consequences of this
highly publicized policy it's best that you had called it out quickly.

Corona Costco shooting: Emergency-exit doors were designed to wait 15 seconds
before opening
 The
system has been taken down for now, but not because it’s illegal — it awaits
outcome of a plan review. When shots rang out the night of Friday, June 14 at
the Costco in Corona, shoppers hustled to emergency exits.
Some struggled with the doors, failing to get them open, and instead hid or
quickly made their way to the main exit at the front of the store.
Those emergency doors, it turns out, were designed to not open instantly.
They were equipped with 15-second delays from when the so-called panic bar is
pushed until the doors open with alarms sounding off. Signs on the doors explain
this – although someone trying to escape a shooting understandably may miss
them.
The system meets a state building code on emergency doors that Corona chose to
adhere to.
At the Corona Costco, the delay system was de-activated after the shooting that
left one dead because it has not yet been approved, the city’s Fire Marshal
Cindi Schmitz said.
Frustration about the doors came to light in the media following the
shooting.
“It’s not very fun when you’re scared and you’re running for your life, and
you’re trying to open a door that says ’emergency’ and they don’t open,” shopper
Rochelle Flores told KTLA 5 the night of the shooting. “Everybody was freaking
out. People were falling over each other.”
Flores told the station she hurt her hand trying to force the door open.
The day after the shooting, the city issued a cease-and-desist order for the
delay system, pending the review’s outcome.

Why check-in is the new checkout
Autonomous checkout is disrupting retail and creating a seamless, frictionless
payment experience, but it’s also about something much bigger, according
to a panel of experts at
NRFtech.
“We think about it beyond the checkout but as a platform. The data
redefines the customer’s store experience — what works and what doesn’t,”

“Retailers of all types and especially traditional full-line grocery and
convenience stores are considering implementing autonomous checkout technology,
where a mix of cameras and sensors track shoppers as they select items through
the store and compile an in-app receipt with embedded payment,” “What you
experience (in these stores) is a completely free business model where every
customer is known, contactable and preauthorized, before they even enter the
store.”
The “holy grail” of autonomous checkout is in-store positioning
capabilities, “The ability to know where a customer is in the store is
useful for checkout, but can be used for a number of other purposes,” Fisher
said, including directing customers on where to find certain items.
The other game changer for autonomous checkout has been the improvement of
computer vision. “Now that computers can see the way people interact with
things, everything will change."

UK's Grocery Retailer Waitrose 340 Stores Rolling Out Self-Checkout
Scan-and-pack system, customer facing tech., customers entering a store pick up
a handset or download an app and use their mobile phones to scan products as
they shop, smoothing out the checkout experience. “We’ve been working with PCMS
on payment software from the beginning and the technology has changed to take
advantage of underlying promotions and basket management,” he says.
About 40 percent of all in-store transactions are self-service right now,
is split fairly evenly between the store’s portable self-scanners and customers’
own mobile devices.
Reaction from customers has been overwhelmingly positive. “Surveys show the
speed and ease of checkout is one of the strongest performers in customer
satisfaction.”
Meanwhile, the use of scan-bag-and-go technology is expanding at a rapid pace
in the United States with chains like Walmart and Kroger aggressively
expanding its use, 7-Eleven piloting a new project and Amazon continuing to
refine its cashierless Amazon Go concept — despite concerns among some
observers that the technology could promote increased theft.

Senators weigh potential security risks from Chinese-made drones
Members of the Senate Commerce security subcommittee examined the impact of
banning Chinese-made drones, or components for drones, during a hearing last
Tuesday.
“You get a system that is integrated into the economy of the United States that
is important, that people use, that people think is reliable from a secure
standpoint, a privacy standpoint, and then you realize as the system is being
built out that possibly the Chinese government has access to the data and other
elements of it, which is concerning,” Sullivan said of the risk to
telecommunications posed by Huawei.
While Sullivan was not sure whether all Chinese technology that collects data,
and thus potentially sends this data to China, should be “ripped out of the
American economy,” he said that “it’s important for us to be aware of it and
then possibly start taking action about it.”
Scott questioned why the United States still does business with China, calling
this “crazy,” and adding that China “is not our friend.” Scott estimated during
the hearing that over 80 percent of drones in the United States and Canada are
Chinese-made.
Wingo called for a “whole of nation” approach to stop Chinese data threats from
drones and other technologies, but cautioned against outright banning the sale
of Chinese technologies due to the potential disruption to the U.S. economy.

Sex Harassment Laws Toughened in New York: 'Finally, This Is Happening'
Wednesday, lawmakers passed sweeping anti-harassment legislation that supporters
said would make New York's laws among the most robust in the nation.
The legislation eliminates the state's "severe or pervasive" standard for
proving harassment, which advocates said had allowed judges to dismiss claims of
inappropriate comments or even groping as insufficiently hostile.
The bills also restrict employers' ability to avoid liability for the behavior
of their employees; provide for attorney fees and punitive damages in
discrimination cases; expand the time frame to file complaints about workplace
harassment with a state agency; and ensure that anti-harassment training is
provided in multiple languages.
NY Govenor Cuomo said "We will make it easier for claims to be brought forward
and send a strong message that when it comes to sexual harassment in the
workplace, time is up," he said in a statement on Wednesday.
The changes build on a
slate of laws that Mr. Cuomo signed last year amid the peak of the #MeToo
movement that banned most nondisclosure agreements and mandatory arbitration for
harassment complaints, and required government employees found responsible for
harassment to refund any taxpayer-financed payouts.

off by the Loss Prevention Foundation’s annual Swing for Certification golf
outing held at Coyote Hills Golf Course in Fullerton, CA, the event honored the
memory of Bob MacLea by sponsoring LPQ and LPC course scholarships in his name
and further raised donations to support the Loss Prevention Benevolent Fund.
During the NRF PROTECT conference, the LPBF received additional donations from
four solution providers including Checkpoint ($2,000.00), Security Resources

Former SVP CVS exec can't work for Amazon's PillPack, judge rules
A federal judge on Tuesday blocked a former CVS Health executive from working at
Amazon.com Inc's PillPack online pharmacy unit, saying that allowing him to take
a job where he would help drive its "disruptive strategy" would violate a
non-compete agreement.
"Months after entering an independent standalone agreement ... for which he was
well-compensated, Mr. Lavin, a high senior official at CVS with access to very
confidential information, went to work for a competitor," Judge McConnell said.
"That is wrong, and CVS is entitled to have the agreement enforced."'
In 2017, Lavin signed an agreement not to provide the "same or similar" service
to a Caremark competitor or take a job that "will likely result" in his
disclosing confidential information to a competitor for 18 months after leaving
the company, according to the order. CVS paid Lavin in stock worth nearly
$160,000 for his signing, the order said.

Workplace demographics have evolved greatly in the past half century with women
and minorities represented in much larger numbers than at any time previously.
Gender, age, and ethnic diversity – among others – have become valued benchmarks
for companies in gauging whether employee talent and executive leadership
adequately reflects the overall population. Diversity is clearly good for
business, but for reasons that go far beyond optics or good PR. Simply put, the
more diverse your workforce, the more diverse their perspectives. Hiring people
of varied backgrounds and views generates the kind of thoughts and ideas vital
to working smartly and quickly, which is especially important in the
cybersecurity industry where discerning an attacker’s motives and strategies is
critical to staying one step ahead.
Cognitive biases are mental shortcuts made to quickly process information and
decide on an action. Not every cognitive bias leads to bad decision making, but
many can. In fact, hackers and threat actors bank on cognitive biases to
get their targets to download malware or give up protected data. Some examples
of common cognitive biases include:

Hackers Targeting HVT's
'DIGITAL THREATS TO HIGH VALUE TARGETS POSE PHYSICAL SECURITY RISKS'
The threat of compromising someone’s digital security to create a physical
threat to an individual or an organization is on the rise.
“Attackers take the same kind of cost-benefit approach that we all do to the way
they spend their time,” he explains. “One thing we know universally about
hackers is that they’re very good at shifting, so they will shift from an
enterprise approach to a targeted, personal attack on the executive of that
enterprise. And that happens pretty regularly…it becomes a lot easier
and a much softer target, and they can have the same kind of impact.”
In
The Entangled Enterprise, a recent report on protecting executives from
cyberattacks, Cypient Black found that along with rising traditional enterprise
attacks against corporate devices, networks, and information, and increasing
attacks against the extended enterprise—third party providers, such as cloud
providers and vendors—a third attack area is also increasing but is often not
addressed by corporate budgets: entangled enterprise risk.
“Entangled enterprise risk is the risk borne by an enterprise from targeted
attacks against the personal digital lives of the enterprise’s executives and
other high value targets (HVTs),” according to the report. “These HVTs often
include senior executives, board members, executive assistants, and their family
members. Such attacks target aspects of personal cybersecurity that are
entangled with the assets of operations of the corporate enterprise.”
Cypient Black identified two types of attacks that malicious actors use to
target HVTs: pivot attacks and endgame attacks.
Pivot attacks leverage vulnerabilities in devices and networks that HVTs
use that are not under the control of their respective organization, such as a
personal smartphone or laptop, to get access to the enterprise.
“They take advantage of the fact that senior leaders have access to a wide range
of sensitive corporate information, are constantly on the move, and inevitably
have personal devices which connect to corporate networks,” according to the
report.
Endgame attacks, on the other hand, leverage access to HVTs’ personal
digital lives to get corporate data or harm the HVT as a method of hurting the
organization he or she is associated with.
One example of this in action was when an auto manufacturer was in the middle of
a labor dispute. The CEO’s daughter went out to lunch at a restaurant and
protestors showed up outside, even though she had not disclosed her location
online. An analysis of her smartphone later found malicious tracking software on
it.
The vectors used for these attacks are often overlooked by organizations
due to an inability to meet the demand or privacy concerns, Lesser says.

Is Hikvision Next?
U.S. Blacklists More Chinese Tech Companies Over National Security Concerns
The Trump administration added five Chinese entities to a United States
blacklist on Friday, further restricting China’s access to American
technology and stoking already high tensions before a planned meeting between
President Trump and President Xi Jinping of China in Japan next week.
The move essentially bars them from buying American technology and components
without a waiver from the United States government, which could all but cripple
them because of their reliance on American chips and other technology to make
advanced electronics.
The entities are one of China’s leading supercomputer makers, Sugon; three
subsidiaries set up to design microchips, Higon, Chengdu Haiguang Integrated
Circuit and Chengdu Haiguang Microelectronics Technology; and the Wuxi Jiangnan
Institute of Computing Technology.
The Trump administration is also considering adding Hikvision, a
surveillance-technology company,

Experts Warn Firms To Get Ready To Pay Ransomware Operators
Pledges to Not Pay Ransomware Hit Reality
While risk analysts and security experts continue to recommend that companies
keep focused on securing their systems and speeding incident response to
minimize the impact of crypto-locking ransomware, they are now also
recommending that companies be prepared to capitulate.
In a June 5 report, for example, Forrester Research
published a guide to paying ransomware, advising its audience to consider
third-party firms that negotiate with cybercriminals to ensure the best outcome.
"Our recommendation is to work with someone who is essentially a specialized
breach coach for ransomware," says Josh Zelonis, senior analyst for
cybersecurity and risk at Forrester. Companies need to "go through a staged
process to make sure that you are building a rapport with the actor and ensuring
that they are able, and willing, to decrypt the data — to essentially deliver a
'proof of life.'"

Amazon's Home Surveillance Patent & Service Coming
Patent papers describe a future in which Amazon customers order drones to hover
around a home and scan for things such as a garage door left open, a broken
window, graffiti or a fire.
As Amazon envisions, a customer can have a package delivered by drone and then
instruct the unmanned aerial vehicle to conduct a "surveillance action," the
authors of the patent wrote
When the drone detects something awry, a text message or telephone call can be
sent to the homeowner or to local authorities.
"An alert may be provided to multiple recipients, such as a service provider
(such as a security provider), an operator, a user, or a municipal entity such
[as] a police or fire department," the patent materials say.

Google Wants a Piece of the Ecommerce Marketplace
Google's
redesigned version of Google Shopping brings its online marketplace center
stage. But can the new platform—which merges Google Shopping with the company’s
existing retail marketplace, Google Express—compete with the likes of Walmart,
eBay and Amazon?
On the Google Shopping platform, consumers will be able to add items to a
universal shopping cart across Google Search, Images and YouTube—and then
seamlessly check out using a Google account. At the same time, Google has
introduced Discovery ads, which expands its ad offerings across these same
channels.
While Google has some clout in this space, it’s not nearly as powerful as
Amazon, according to a January 2019 survey conducted by ecommerce platform
Salsify. While 78% of US digital shoppers consider Amazon their favorite place
to buy and shop, just 26% said the same about Google or another search engine.

St Louis, MO: Thieves steal 2 Sewing Machines valued at $20,000 each
A South County sewing-machine company was robbed in the early hours of Saturday
morning, and police are still looking for the suspects responsible. The Heyde
Sewing Machine Company, 5451 S. Lindbergh Blvd., was robbed overnight June 15.
Two suspects made off with two sewing machines, each worth $20,000.
Karen Warren, the owner of Heyde Sewing, said that she was contacted by police
around 8:45 that morning, after police were notified by a driver passing by the
store that one of the store’s windows had been broken. The suspects broke into
the store around 4 a.m., according to the store’s security footage. Only two
sewing machines, each about 100 pounds, were stolen, a $40,000 total loss.

San Luis Obispo, CA: Police ask for help identify suspected thieves in San Luis
Obispo stores
The San Luis Obispo Police Department is searching for two people suspected of
thousands of dollars in theft.
On Sunday, a man and women allegedly stole two wallets from shoppers in the
Froom Ranch area, police said. According to post, the suspects used the stolen
creditcards to “purchased thousands of dollars of merchandise from Dick’s
Sporting Goods, Target, Best Buy, Apple, and Vons.”

Franklin, TN: Two Kohl’s Shoplifters Arrested for $1,600 Felony Theft &
Resisting Officers
At 5:30 pm, Franklin Police were called to Kohl’s after security saw 21-year-old
Damon Walker and Jamiesha Hodges, 27, both of Nashville, stuffing large amounts
of merchandise into bags. Officers were waiting outside and attempted to speak
with the couple after they left the store with stolen merchandise. Walker fled
on foot and was captured after a short chase. Hodges was arrested as she tried
getting into her car in the Kohl’s parking lot. Walker and Hodges were both
charged with Felony Theft, Resisting Arrest, and Drug Possession. Walker was
also charged with Evading Arrest and Possession of Burglary Tools. Hodges picked
up an additional charge for Driving on a Suspended License. Franklin Police
recovered more than $1,600 in merchandise that the two had stolen.

St Louis, MO: Police Officer fatally shot responding to a Bad Check
investigation, suspect in custody
 A
police officer was fatally shot Sunday afternoon while answering a call about a
customer trying to cash a bad check at Clay’s Wellston Food Market Restaurant,
North County Police Cooperative Chief John Buchannan confirmed. The officer has
been identified as Michael Langsdorf, 40, who had worked for the cooperative for
three months. A suspect is in custody and a gun has been recovered, Buchannan
said outside Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where Langsdorf had been taken after the
shooting. Langsdorf was called to the market, 6250 Page Avenue, around 4:30 p.m.

check is the suspect in the shooting, police said. Most of the confrontation was
caught by a store surveillance camera near the counter. It showed that the
encounter lasted 1 minute, 16 seconds, according to a source familiar with the

North Attleboro, MA: Shopping mall shooter suspect found dead
 The
suspect in last weekend’s homicide outside a North Attleboro shopping center has
been found dead in the woods in Charlestown. A warrant was issued Sunday
charging Fregeolle with murder, following a deadly shooting at Fashion Crossing
Plaza in North Attleboro. Officials say Fregeolle shot and killed 37-year-old
Brandi Berg while she was in her car in the parking lot of the plaza. Berg was
rushed to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, where she was pronounced
deceased. After a massive manhunt, authorities searched deep in the woods of
Francis Carter Preserve in Charlestown Sunday evening after 32-year-old Steven
Fregeolle's car was found parked in the area.

Dover, DE: Four Teens Allegedly Shot Officers With BB Guns at Dover Mall
Four teenagers are in police custody, after one of the teens fired a BB gun at
officers Saturday afternoon, according to Dover police. Police said the officers
responded to the Dover Mall after receiving a call that the group of teens
refused to leave the property. According police, when police arrived on the
scene, they found the four teens riding on their bicycles. As police drove past
the teens, that's when police say one of the teens started shooting at the
officers' cars, causing minor damage. The four teenagers were able to get away,
but after a brief chase, Dover Police report they were able to catch the group.
Police say they found three BB guns belonging to the four teenagers.

Your Quest
Is to help steer as many as you can into solid well performing teams so
that they get the credit and your retailer gets the results.
Mind you I didn't use the words "high" performing because quite frankly that
automatically puts expectations on every team player and just doesn't reflect
the every day reality of life. I just don't believe any team can maintain truly
high performance day in day out and the best we can all expect, is a well
performing team consistently, even when the chips are down. Because the reality
of leadership is to manage mediocrity to a point where it operates well every
day. Mostly because of human nature and life's inevitable bumps. That we all
face and have to deal with.

Seems like everywhere we go people always mention how much they enjoy the
Tip column and quite frankly I find myself under valuing it and most times
blowing it off. Which is absolutely terrible to do and worst to admit. But I
usually like to leave the pontification to others who have the time to or who
