The Longest Foreign Corruption Case
Walmart's $900 Million Compliance Costs - The Biggest in
History
BREAKING: Walmart To Pay $282M To End Government's FCPA
Claims
Walmart Inc. agreed Thursday to pay more than $282 million to settle
allegations by U.S. authorities that it violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices
Act by failing to ensure subsidiaries in Brazil, China, India and Mexico had
adequate anti-corruption programs.
The Justice Department launched its investigation as a series of New York Times
articles described alleged bribes Walmart paid in Mexico to obtain permits to
build stores there. That spurred a wide-reaching investigation of Walmart’s
business across the globe, including in Brazil, China and India.
Walmart will pay roughly $144 million to resolve the U.S. Securities and
Exchange Commission's civil claims and $138 million to resolve criminal charges
brought by the U.S. Department of Justice, according to the SEC.
Walmart has spent about $900 million since 2012 on its own internal
investigation of the bribery allegations and upgraded compliance operations,
according to financial filings.
law360.com
wsj.com
Editor's Note: This case brought about the biggest compliance
effort in history. Probably of any business sector ever globally. Just try
even buying a Walmart executive lunch! It won't happen. Heck I got paranoid just
walking the halls.
In one year alone, right after the first reports came out, Walmart stated in
their next annual report that they spent over $400 million on the compliance
efforts and associated expenses in one year alone. And since then they've
probably become the most vendor sensitive organization there is out there.
It's still our belief that an investigator (whistleblower), sent down on the
initial investigation in Mexico, was the confidential New York Times source. Due
to the fact that in their eyes, nothing was done.
Shortly afterwards the executive who was at the center of this alleged activity
returned to the corporate office and retired shortly afterwards. However this is
just our opinion and does not based on any information.

Visualizing The Supermarket of the Future
by Tony D'Onofrio, Global Retail Influencer
In multiple of my articles, I have been consistent that consumers and store
associates as brand ambassadors plus immersive customer experiences are the
future of retail. Growing up in this industry, it is always exhilarating
observing these success elements in a live environment.
Several weeks ago, I had the pleasure of re-visiting one of my favorite stores
in the world, Dorothy Lane Market (DLM) in the USA state of Ohio. This retail
masterpiece celebrated 70 years of being in business in 2018.
Our quick lunch possibilities visit into one of their locations evolved into an
immersive 2+ hour visualization journey of the future supermarket. This post
summarizes a few of the captured images and the memories they brought back from
previously living in this part of the world.
Shopping at DLM is a Global Experience
DLM shoppers build on the global team spirit by having their pictures taken
at various sites around the world holding a Dorothy Lane Market shopping bag.
Below is the current display of the global images from the store and on the
right is my own personal contribution from several years ago from a winery in
South Africa.
The Aisles are Alive with the Sounds of Positive Experiences
The entrance is a visual invitation to shop till you drop. Lots of fresh choices
in the delicatessen. The bakery invites you to try one of their famous brownies.
I was tempted by the French baguette sandwiches. The fresh produce display was
amazing. But the salad bar was our favorite (and ended up being our delicious
lunch). Too early in the morning, but the wine selection was inviting. Maybe
need to come back for one of those scheduled wine tastings.
Brand
Ambassadors are Everywhere
Positive retail experiences begin with engaged employees. This
book excerpt provides some insights on what it takes to build the
pro-customer and pro-employees DLM culture.
I am now visualizing that as the supermarket of the future,
Dorothy Lane Market will soon deliver from Ohio to South Carolina.

At
Facebook’s worst-performing content moderation site in North America, one

A Facebook content moderation site in Tampa, FL, operated by a professional

pressure from their bosses to better enforce the social network’s community
standards, which receive near-daily updates that leave its contractor workforce
in a perpetual state of uncertainty. The Tampa site has routinely failed to meet

Cracker Barrel refuses to host Tennessee
anti-LGBTQ pastor's event
Cracker Barrel said in a statement posted to social media on Tuesday it will not
permit a gathering planned at its Cleveland, Tennessee, restaurant hosted by a
Knox County deputy and pastor who has come under fire for his anti-LGBTQ
statements and sermons.
Tennessee Democratic Party Chairman Mary Mancini wrote an open letter to the CEO
of Cracker Barrel, which was also posted to Twitter, informing them that Grayson
Fritts and All Scripture Baptist Church were planning a gathering on June 29 at
its Cleveland location called "Small Town Soul Winning."
In the letter, Mancini notes that the event goes against the statement of
inclusion and diversity posted to the restaurant's website. The restaurant
responded saying they have advised Fritts and the church that their event will
not be allowed at Cracker Barrel and neither he nor his group will be permitted
on site. wkrn.com

"The President Gets 100 Days to Prove Themselves
You Get Just 90" & You Better Be Going Full Speed
That's how author Michael D. Watkins opens his seminal book on leadership
transitions, The First 90 Days. The three-month period, as he explains,
is a quarter, the time frame used by companies to track performance, and it is
long enough to offer meaningful indicators of how a new manager is doing.
Research shows that success or failure within the first few months of a
new management role is often an accurate predictor of ultimate success,
he adds.
"When leaders derail, their failures can almost always be traced to vicious
cycles that developed in the first few months on the job," Watkins writes.
These vicious cycles frequently begin in a few similar ways. Some new
managers do not realize the impact of their early words and actions, and
are inadvertently sending colleagues the wrong message. Others focus on a new
strategy before earning trust and support from the team. Others expend too
much energy on the wrong projects and neglect the priorities of stakeholders,
Bradt writes.
"The pace of transition has gone up pretty dramatically." Since 2013,
average turnover time at the vice president level decreased from
3.2 years to 2.2 years. "There's a premium on getting up to speed faster,"
he explains.
Break down a new manager's first 90 days into 10 separate directives: Prepare
Yourself; Accelerate Your Learning; Match Strategy to Situation; Negotiate
Success; Secure Early Wins; Achieve Alignment; Build Your Team; Create
Alliances; Manage Yourself; and Accelerate Everyone.

Inside the FBI's Fight Against Cybercrime
Heavily outnumbered and outpaced by their targets, small FBI cybersquads have
been quietly notching up
major wins against online criminals operating out of home and abroad.
At least some of the success is the result of efforts to build up partnerships
with private industry and from cooperation with international law enforcement
agencies.
Victories are a long way from chilling cybercrime, which by some accounts has
become even bigger and more organized than even drug trafficking. But the
arrests, the indictments, the seizures, and the takedowns are not going entirely
unnoticed either.
As threats have evolved, so has the FBI's understanding of how best to approach
them. One area where the agency has made a lot of improvement is in scoping
requests for data from service providers when carrying out investigations. "We
have gotten better at getting the right evidence from service providers," Walton
says.
Helping them in a major way is the private industry. Over the past several
years, the FBI has been working with researchers and engineers from within the
security industry to try and understand new and emerging threats and trends. The
informal interactions and relationships have been key to the FBI's ability to
hunt down and dismantle criminal networks on the Internet.

AMCA Bankruptcy Filing in Wake of Breach Reveals Impact
Court Documents Outline a 'Host of Negative

In a case underscoring the potential financial havoc wreaked by data breaches,
the 42-year-old parent company of American Medical Collection Agency has filed
for bankruptcy just weeks after disclosing a data breach that affected its
largest clients and millions of patients.
The move comes after the March discovery of a major data breach, revealed in
June. The breach not only caused AMCA's largest clients to end their business
relationships with the Elmsford, New York-based debt collection agency, but has
also resulted in "enormous expenses that were beyond the ability of [the
company] to bear." govinfosecurity.com
Regulation readiness: Embracing the privacy
legislation wave ahead
Some organizations are debating whether or not they should adhere to these
data privacy requirements—and those that are still to come—particularly if
they find themselves outside of their respective jurisdictions; perhaps your
business is one of them.
While privacy regulation is currently fragmented, a worldwide governmental
consensus is swiftly building. Organizations like yours should embrace data
rights now with open arms instead of trying to resist the coming wave of data
privacy legislation; this will enable you to leap ahead of competitors, and
allow you to focus on innovation and long term strategy instead of spending all
of your time and energy on avoiding
penalties for non-compliance.

So, what tools do security analysts have to conduct these higher-level tasks?
There can be a huge leap from running Tier 1 tasks to determining the scope of

Eatstreet discloses security breach
Hacker steals online and mobile food ordering service's customer information
Eatstreet, an online and
mobile food ordering service, has disclosed a security breach that took place in
May 2019.
During the breach, Gnosticplayers, a hacker who previously breached many other
online services, stole the company’s database, complete with customer and
partner details. According to EatStreet, the hacker breached its computer
network on May 3, 2019 and proceeded to access and download information from its
database, until May 17, 2019 when the company said it detected the intrusion and
promptly terminated the hacker's access.
The hacker stole information on customers who used the EatStreet online or
mobile service to order food from local restaurants to their homes. Moreover,
the hacker also got hold of information on restaurants participating in
EatStreet’s network, along with info on the third-party delivery services that
the company had partnered with to deliver the food from restaurants to
customers' homes.
Accessed information included names, phone numbers, email addresses, bank
accounts, and routing numbers for restaurants and delivery services.

6 highly effective ways to reduce ecommerce cart
abandonment
According to
research from Baymard Institute, the average online shopping cart
abandonment rate is 69.57 percent. In other words, less than a third of people
who get to the checkout stage on an ecommerce website will complete their order.
In many cases, consumers put items into a shopping cart to see the total cost or
with the intent of coming back later to complete the purchase. Still, some back
out of a transaction for reasons that retailers can address.
By implementing the following six ideas, you can significantly reduce ecommerce
cart abandonment:
1. Eliminate or Minimize Extra Costs, and be Upfront About Them
2. Reduce The Number of Checkout Form Fields
3. Make Use of Recognized, Secure Trust Seals and Trust Marks
4. Work on Your Website Speed and Functionality

Volusia County, FL: Counterfeiting ring:
“Operation Wild Bills”
6 more arrested in ongoing investigation tied to fake cash, shoplifting and
return fraud
The head of a counterfeiting organization busted in July recruited people hooked
on drugs to pass around the fake money, shoplift and return merchandise bought
with false currency, investigators said. Even the Southworth brand of paper used
to make the imitation money was stolen from Walmart, Volusia County sheriff’s
detectives said. Frederick Paqua, 55, paid the people with heroin,
methamphetamine, pills and very little money, sheriff’s investigators said.
In telling investigators how he started and grew his counterfeiting operation,
Paqua, who goes by “New York” or “Money Man,” laughed when he said the people he
got to help him were aware of his criminal activities, an investigative report
states. “They’re drug addicts, but they knew what they were doing,” a laughing
Paqua told investigators, according to the report.
Investigators said Paqua and his group produced more than $100,000 in
counterfeit money from March to July 2018. Volusia County Sheriff’s Office
detectives started looking into the group in April 2018 after getting multiple
reports from businesses that people were passing fake money in $10, $50 and $100
bills. The reports were made at coffee shops like Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks,
gas stations and at big chain stores like Home Depot, Walmart and Lowe’s in
Orange City, DeLand and at other businesses in the Sheriff’s Office’s
jurisdiction, reports state. On Tuesday, Volusia deputies made six additional
arrests in connection with Paqua’s racketeering and counterfeit operation
dismantled last July. These six arrests are in addition to arrests made on July
18, 2018.

It always boils down to the people - the team. No matter how sophisticated we
become or how fast and efficient our systems are, it's always the people that
make it work or not work for that matter. So many hide so much behind the
technology that I wonder if we, the people, are losing ground at times. It's
easy to sit back, get work done, shuffle our emails and feel like we
accomplished a lot. But at the end of the day have we really?
Just a Thought, Gus
