Former VP of LP - Now EVP Operations - Chris Nichols Shares How Envysion Helped
Fallas Stores Address Inventory Shrink and Root Out Fraud
Established
family-owned retailer Fallas Stores is ready to tell its side of the story.
Today, the company announced the release of a customer success story in
conjunction with loss prevention industry leader
Envysion.
Boasting more than 100 stores nationwide, the Los Angeles-based firm formerly
known as National Stores, Inc. details how Envysion Retail Solution Suite helps
generate custom exception reports from point-of-sale (POS) data and combines
them with multi-camera video from high-definition cameras to stamp out losses
from theft, fraud, and other malfeasance.
“Retail is a margin-based business and the closer you can manage them, the
better chance you have of having long-term success,” says Fallas Executive
Vice President Of Operations Chris Nichols. “Envysion combines our POS data
and video intelligence into a single platform, allowing us to create specific
transaction reports and compare them side-by-side with what’s happening on the
video to identify potential losses from discount and refund fraud, theft, and
inventory mismanagement in every department of each store.”

Surveillance system uses crowdsourcing to identify retail criminals
All retailers, even those with very good surveillance cameras, know how
difficult it is to find the criminals who plunder their stores. Now more than
20,000 stores — large national chains and small independent retailers — are
changing the dynamic, with the help of a system that creates both a real risk
and a deterrence for criminals.
Rite Aid, which has been using the
Captis I-4 system
since 2017, is “closing over 50 percent of our violent crimes within a week,
with some cases solved in a couple of days,” says Robert Oberosler, former group
vice president of loss prevention. In one case, he says, Rite Aid went from
“posting a crime to getting a tip to apprehension by law enforcement in just
three hours.”
Kroger began using the system last year and “it has definitely impacted
us in many ways,” says Quentin Goward, Kroger’s senior corporate manager for
business security, organized retail crime and incident response. “It has met all
of our expectations, including our ability to use all the functionalities of it
and to use it in different parts of our business, safety, social media
awareness, situational awareness.”

Sprint Food Stores finds rapid ROI with i3 International camera system
Sprint Food Stores, an Augusta, Ga.-based
chain of 30 convenience stores, recently invested in an advanced video surveillance system
from i3 International that captured images so clear that, when installed outside
one store, the license plate and company name on a truck that sheared the roof
off a Sprint Food storage shed were clearly visible.
The i3 software that ERC, an i3 system integrator/installer,
installed gave Sprint Food’s corporate loss prevention personnel access to
store-level point-of-sale transactional sales data for the first time; Sprint
Food had been working with five different video surveillance and software
systems, most about 10 years old, as a result of acquiring stores over the
years.

New threat assessment confirms links between counterfeiting
and organised crime in the EU
Most criminal activity involving counterfeiting is carried out by increasingly
professionalised organised crime networks, which can reap large profits while
running relatively few risks. That is according to the first EU-wide
intellectual property crime threat assessment from Europol and the European
Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).
The
report also underlines that, although the majority of counterfeits in the EU
market are produced outside Europe, in particular in parts of Asia, domestic
manufacturing within Europe is an increasing trend.
The threat assessment, carried out using EU-wide data and strategic intelligence
analysis, also stresses that, as well as the traditional categories of
counterfeited clothes, footwear and luxury products, there is a
growing trade in fake products which have the potential to damage human health.
An example of this would be the trade in counterfeit medicines for the treatment
of serious illnesses, which appears to be increasing.
In addition,
fake goods are increasingly shipped via small parcels and express couriers,
which are more difficult for enforcement authorities to detect.

SOCs Struggle with Staffing, Reporting and Visibility
Staffing remains an issue for security operations centers (SOCs), which continue
to struggle with reporting and documentation while barely being able to stay
afloat in a
sea of alerts and false positives,
according to the annual State of the SOC report from Exabeam.
The report found approximately one-third of respondents said that their SOC was
understaffed by 6–10 people. “Nearly 50%
of understaffed SOCs indicated they don’t have sufficient funding for
technology, while respondents of larger SOCs said that despite recent or
increased funding for technology, they recommend continued investment in newer,
more modern technologies (39%),” the press release said.
In addition, shifting roles and responsibilities is a top challenge for SOC
managers, with C-suite executives taking on the tasks of incident response and
threat hunting, while frontline employees are completing fewer operational
tasks.
Only 5% of respondents said they see all of the events in the security incident
and event management (SIEM) system. Not having full visibility into events is a
handicap for SOC managers, who reported that a
lack of visibility leaves them more likely to miss security alerts.
Because legacy applications are unable to log events, 39% of SOC personnel
reported security alerts as the largest pain point that leaves the organization
more vulnerable to cyber-attacks.

California: Lawmakers Push to Automatically Expunge 1M Criminal Convictions
California has already moved to automatically expunge the records of those
convicted of qualifying marijuana crimes. Now, Democratic lawmakers and
advocates want to erase the records of those who have served their time for
other crimes. The lawmakers and dozens of supporters rallied in sweltering heat
Tuesday supporting two Assembly-approved bills that would automatically expunge
arrest and conviction records for an estimated 1 million residents who are
already entitled under existing law because they have completed their sentences
and supervision.
The bills awaiting consideration in the state Senate would “unnecessarily put
the burden on records management personnel, who are short staffed and without
sufficient resources, to move arrest dispositions to an automated system, a very
labor intensive and cost-prohibitive task,” objected the California Law
Enforcement Association of Records Supervisors, Inc. The group fears it would
also create a legal liability for agencies that inadvertently miss a qualifying
record.

Study: These retailers are filling void left by demise of Toys “R” Us
Shopping for toys has evolved in the roughly one year since Toys “R” Us exited
the retail scene.
Walmart
ranked as the top (43%) destination for shoppers who had previously bought toys
from Toys “R” Us in the past 12 months according to a Profitero survey conducted
in May 2019.
Amazon
ranked second (33%), followed by
Target
(17%). For Toys “R” Us shoppers in the U.K., Amazon is now viewed as the top
choice (40%) for toys.
In findings that bode well for Amazon, the report, “The eCommerce Toy Story,”
revealed that the search for toys is now starting online, with 62% of U.S.
consumers preferring to shop for toys most often online.

At Nordstrom, the next evolution of BOPIS emerges
Nordstrom, along with just about every mid- to large-sized retailer with
brick-and-mortar locations, is using the concept of buy online, pick up in store
(BOPIS) and buy online, ship to store (BOSS) to let customers shop how they want
while driving foot traffic into stores. While retailers with physical locations
have embraced omnichannel strategies, especially to compete with online only
shops, brick-and-mortar stores are still figuring out reverse logistics and how
to process all the returns.

Wausau, WI: Feds Charge Army Recruiter with Hacking, Selling $93K Kohl's Cash
Man caught after bragging about the scheme
on Twitter, now facing 45 years prison
When several Kohl's customers boasted on social media they were able to take
home expensive merchandise for no cost at all, they praised the Twitter user who
helped make it possible: @OfficialJigLord. The person operating the account,
which proudly promotes its ability to "specialize in steal, deals and jigs,"
retweeted the successes.
The arrogance, according to a federal criminal complaint, prompted at least one
person to contact Kohl's through a private message alleging the account was
selling illegally obtained property of the company. Federal investigators had
also caught wind and were tracing a digital trail that led them to an Army
recruiter in Wausau, records show.
Robert Gordon is the man investigators said operated the account which
advertised Kohl's cash in order to make a profit. Kohl's cash is free money the
company assigns to customers who spend certain amounts of money in the store or
online.
But according to the complaint, Gordon hacked the Kohl's database containing
Kohl's Cash numbers. The record shows investigators linked the hack to an IP
address connected to Gordon and his wife.
Gordon faces 45 years in prison and a $750,000 fine if convicted.

'Lone Wolf' Scammer Built a Multifaceted BEC Cybercrime Operation
A one-man 419 scam evolved into a lucrative social-engineering syndicate
over the past decade that conducts a combination of business email compromise,
romance, and financial fraud.
This wasn't the first time the chief financial officer of email security vendor
Agari had been targeted in a business email compromise (BEC) scam. As with the
first incident in August 2018, three months later Agari's software tool flagged
a suspicious email meant for its CFO, Raymond Lim, that posed as a supplier
requesting a wire transfer for an invoice payment.
Agari researchers played along with the scammers as they had done in the August
incident, impersonating the CFO's administrative assistant and stringing them
along for about a month, gathering intel on the people and operation behind the
November emails. The researchers were able to identify the BEC attackers as a
Nigeria-based cybercrime gang they nicknamed Scattered Canary, a group of
some 35 individuals they believe may be a subgroup of an even larger criminal
organization.
They discovered that this group wasn't just sending BEC emails to make money.
Scattered Canary also conducts romance scams, credit card fraud, check fraud,
fake job listings, credential harvesting, and tax schemes, among other online
cons.

Economic Espionage:
U.S. will start offensive hacking in response to commercial cyberattacks
The U.S. government plans to carry out offensive cyber operations in retaliation
to economic espionage, White House National Security Adviser John Bolton said.
Recent acts of offensive hacking by the U.S. have focused on stopping election
interference in 2018, but the government is now expanding the areas where it
will respond to malicious attacks with cyber measures, Mr. Bolton said Tuesday
at The Wall Street Journal’s CFO Network Annual Meeting in Washington. Offensive
hacking could raise costs on adversaries, but won’t end foreign
government-sponsored cyberattacks, he said. Hacks targeting the U.S. may also be
met with non-cyber responses, he said.

Amazon Recorded Kids Without Consent, Privacy Suits Say
Amazon.com Inc. was hit Tuesday with proposed class actions in California state
court and Washington federal court, claiming that its Alexa voice-activated
speakers violate state privacy laws by recording and storing children's voices
without consent from children or their parents. The minor plaintiffs allege that
the Seattle-based online retailer has built a massive database containing
billions of voice recordings collected with its Alexa devices. Those recordings
include private details of millions of Americans, including children, which the
company analyzes and can use for its own profit, the suits claim.

The rise of organized crews of shoplifters & what Halton police are doing about
it
Crime fighting measures have been 'remarkably successful'
“Organized theft rings have been a growing concern among retailers,” said
Inspector Bob Gourley with the Halton Regional Police. ”It’s no longer just a
person taking an item and leaving. People are making a good living out of going
out and their daily business is to take items from retailers.”
The popularity and ease of use of online retailers like Kijiji and Letgo mean
stealing and reselling product is easier than ever. Most people don’t
question why the out-of-the-box item they are buying online is 40 per cent of
the retail cost as long as they are getting a great deal.
Gourley was speaking to the Halton Police Services Board where he outlined the
Retail Theft Strategy. He broke down what police are doing, how things have
changed and outlined a few incidents that represent the larger trend. It’s not
unheard of for organized groups of thieves to travel into the region
targeting stores along the way and working it like a job. The potential
profits of such an operation are also significant.
Halton Regional Police’s retail theft strategy has been remarkably successful.
Through a combination of working with loss prevention officers, sharing
information, centralizing police reporting and regularly publicizing offenders
the region has seen a dramatic decrease in reports and an increased in the
clearance rate.

How Canada's RCMP is cracking down on the rise of counterfeit goods;
$15 million recovered over past 5 years
Barry Elliott is a criminal analyst that works with the RCMP’s Canadian
Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC). He handles cases involving Canadian victims who have
bought a fake good, as well as those involving people around
the world who have purchased a counterfeit Canadian branded product, such as
Canada Goose, Lululemon or Herschel.
Over the last five years, the CAFC has helped 42,000 victims of counterfeit
fraud recover nearly $15 million. In 2018 alone, more than 12,000 victims
recovered about $4.2 million. The proliferation of counterfeit goods sold
online is an “epidemic”, according to a recent report from the Better Business
Bureau in the United States.
The BBB report credits Elliott’s Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre for its “innovative
efforts” in helping crack down on the rise of counterfeit goods and recovering
cash for victims. The CAFC recovers cash for consumers through Project
Chargeback, a unique-to-Canada initiative that works with Visa, Mastercard and
banks to ensure counterfeit victims get their money back, while also shutting
down the sellers’ illegal operations.
According to Elliott and the BBB report, most of the counterfeit goods can be
traced back to China. In fact, almost all of the merchant accounts that
Project Chargeback has traced link back to four banks in China. But lately,
Elliott has actually seen his workload decrease. That’s because in October, Visa
and Mastercard terminated its relationship with one of the four Chinese banks
which Elliott says are linked to 99 per cent of all merchant accounts
responsible for the sale of counterfeit goods.

Toronto using concrete blocks to stop unlicensed pot shops
from reopening
The
City of Toronto has resorted to using huge concrete blocks to prevent unlicensed
marijuana dispensaries from reopening in the city. Blocks were first placed in
front of the doors of an alleged illegal dispensary near Yonge and Bloor streets
in May. Sraga said the city took a number of measures to make sure no one could
go back into the location on St. Nicholas Street, including changing the locks
on the doors. However, the owners allegedly broke back into the location and
continued to illegally sell cannabis, Sraga said. “We then employed a more
significant enforcement action,” he said.

Retail industry warns that Trudeau’s single-use plastics ban could raise prices
Retail industry representatives and plastics manufacturers gave a cautious
thumbs-up to the federal government’s proposed ban on single-use plastics, but
warned the cost of groceries and other packaged goods could rise if the plan
is implemented too quickly.
The proposed ban on “harmful” single-use plastics, announced Monday by Prime
Minister Justin Trudeau, could hurt small businesses and make things more costly
for consumers, industry representatives warned.
“If the government isn’t flexible, this has the potential to increase costs for
consumers,” warned Philippe Cantin, the Retail Council of Canada’s senior
director of sustainability.

Amazon launches a credit card for the
‘underbanked’ with bad credit
The e-commerce giant partnered with publicly traded bank Synchrony Financial to
launch “Amazon Credit Builder” — a program that lends to shoppers with no credit
history or bad credit, who would otherwise be exempt from Amazon’s loyalty
cards.
The card has the same perks, like 5% cash back on purchases, that come with the
popular Amazon Store card, which Synchrony also powers. These rewards cards
incentivize shoppers to use Amazon instead of an alternative and helps drive
loyalty within its customer base, Quindlen said. Banks such as J.P. Morgan have
also bet on rewards cards that would theoretically make customers spend more and
in turn bring in more interest and returns.
This new Amazon card could open the door to a huge segment of U.S. buyers.
According to a 2018 FICO
survey, more than 11% of the population has a credit score below 550. About
4% of the population has a “bad credit score,” which according to FICO Score is
between 300 and 499. Meanwhile according to a 2017
survey by the FDIC, 25% of U.S. households are either unbanked or
underbanked.

Chandler, AZ: Shoplifting arrest led to $425,000
Nationwide Baby Formula theft ring operation
Chandler Police are calling it one of the biggest Organized Retail theft rings
they have ever seen, as more than a dozen people have been arrested, accused of
stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of baby formula for sale on the
black market. It started with a small shoplifting arrest, and now, this massive
coast-to-coast investigation has Homeland Security involved. The man facing
charges said buying formula and selling it was a "hobby" of his, but the
allegations say that it was a lot more complex than that.
The Chandler couple is facing an array of charges after a simple shoplifting
arrest last fall led authorities to uncover the theft ring. "Basically, what
they had set up was a guarantee. They had a buyer, one that was going to pay
them in cash," said Seth Tyler with Chandler Police. It led Chandler Police to
more people who stole baby formulas and sold it to 46-year-old Rafid Khoshi and
his wife, 43-year-old Manal Sulaiman. "They were purchasing this for 30 to 50
cents on the dollar, and they were in turn actually selling it to a distributor
in El Cajon, California. This distributor was then selling it to buyers in the
Minneapolis area and Brooklyn, New York," said Tyler. "Other than the cars, they
didn't seem to have a big lavish lifestyle," said Darrin Jepsen.
The numbers are staggering, with more than 100 related reports of theft in
Maricopa County. Retailers like Walmart, Target, Albertson's and Fry's have
collectively lost more than $55,000. 200 felony charges have been issued to more
than a dozen people so far.

down and tussled with a suspected thief — and police brass want to know why, the
Daily News has learned. Officers stayed inside their department SUV as Marshalls
security grappled with a shoplifter in front of the store on East Ave. in
Parkchester at 4:30 p.m. on May 28, sources said. In the nearly minute and a
half long clip acquired by The News, the loss prevention guard can be seen
running after the suspect and slamming the man against a car while the NYPD
patrol car is parked across the narrow street. The alleged thief, 24-year-old
Vidal Lopez, manages to squirm out of his T-shirt, break free from the guard and
run off — right past the cruiser.

Being too close to the trees to see the forest is an expression that also fits
not appreciating the role you play on your own team. With the needs of the day
seemingly always taking priority, it's difficult for some to step back and truly
see the value you can add to your own team. Realizing it and accepting the
responsibility as a team member is half the battle. But doing something with it
and truly adding value is what helps the team win the game. Every group, every
department is in fact a team and every member plays a vital role towards the
success and the survival of that team. That's why that old expression - One for
all and all for one - took such a hold in literature. Because it is that simple.
The hard part is taking responsibility for it.
Just a Thought, Gus
