A Fresh Approach to Commercial Security
By Dan Bresingham, Executive Vice President – ADT Commercial
When you think about ADT, your first thoughts may be that it is best known as a
trusted market leader in the home security and automation market. What you may
not think about is its role in the commercial security space.
Since our merger with Protection 1 back in 2016, we have been actively building
out our commercial capabilities with a talented workforce, expanded geographic
reach, enhanced products and technologies, all of which have been supplemented
through strategic acquisitions. Some incorrectly say we are new to the
commercial scene. Another misconception that we often hear is that our
commercial business is based on the Tyco Fire & Security days. While the ADT
brand carries a commercial legacy spanning over 100 years, our foundation since
re-entering commercial security comes largely from Protection 1’s customer-first
philosophy and a management team that has spent the majority of their careers
serving this market. We are laser focused on delivering the highest level of
customer service at every touch point – from installations and service delivery
to billing and ongoing support, and we run our business by focusing on the
outliers of each experience and operating metric, not on averages.
To
this end, earlier this year we unveiled our
ADT Commercial
brand, and we plan to operate as a dedicated Commercial Business solely focused
on our commercial, national accounts and enterprise customers. With the
acquisition of Red Hawk Fire & Security, we are now one of the largest
commercial integrators in North America. The timing was right.
In most major cities, we will have dedicated teams to support our commercial
clients with separate systems, leaders, processes and personnel including
technical competency in advanced security, enterprise and life safety systems.
We will continue to refine and enhance our national account program supported by
our National Account Operations Center, two Network Operation Centers and
dedicated commercial and national account alarm monitoring centers. We have
added new solutions and services to our portfolio including enterprise-level
access control and IP-enabled video, risk management services and one of the
most comprehensive and experienced fire protection solutions providers in the
market.
The foundation of our business is based on the customer experience coupled with
a holistic approach to technology and services. We will continue to grow our
talented team and capabilities to serve our customers better. Our goal, and the
mission of our employees, is to be the best customer service provider in the
industry with an experienced, technically competent commercial security team.
We are not new to the commercial space, but we will set new standards in
customer service that other companies can only hope to come close to meeting.

ALTO US Teams Up with Anaheim Police Department
for 'Carne Asada with a Cop'
Community Outreach Event
Local
Anaheim residents and shoppers recently joined Anaheim Police Department personnel
at Northgate Market on South Euclid Street to enjoy some tasty tacos and quality conversation during the Carne Asada
with a Cop event.
While community engagement is the main purpose of events like Carne Asada with a
Cop, the event also functions as a casual open forum and gives residents a
chance to get to know their police department on a more personal level.
This
particular Carne Asada with a Cop was set up by
ALTO Alliance with support from the Anaheim Police Department. ALTO
represents Northgate Markets, and other Alliance retail members, to ensure
offenders are held accountable for their actions. Read more

NRF PROTECT to honor loss prevention,
law enforcement
experts for combating retail crime
D&D Daily's
Publisher Gus Downing
Named Ring of Excellence Award Winner
Dep. of Homeland Security Special Agent
John Willis Named LERPA Award Winner
A veteran member of the loss prevention community and a Department of Homeland
Security investigator will be honored for their efforts to protect the retail
industry this week during the National Retail Federation’s annual
NRF PROTECT conference
in Anaheim, Calif.
“Every day, individuals working in loss prevention are staying one step ahead of
lawbreakers to protect the communities they serve and to prevent the next big
crime,” NRF Vice President for Loss Prevention Robert Moraca said. “We’re proud
to recognize these hardworking individuals for their commitment to safety and to
highlight the importance of collaboration between retail and law enforcement.”
Ring
of Excellence Award
This award recognizes outstanding leaders in the retail LP community whose
“honor, integrity and character serve as an example for the industry.”
This year’s recipient is
Gus
Downing, president of
Downing & Downing,
an executive search and consulting firm he founded in 1983 that has helped
retailers hire more than 2,800 LP executives. Downing is also publisher and
editor of the D&D Daily
e-newsletter, which specializes in retail loss prevention and IT security news.
He is a second-generation retail LP expert who began his career in 1973 working
for a security firm run by his father, Gus Downing Sr., a pioneer in the LP
industry. He has held LP leadership roles at retailers including the Children’s
Place, Lerner Shops and Gold Circle Stores.
Law Enforcement Retail Partnership
Award
This
award acknowledges law enforcement officers or agencies that have gone “above
and beyond the call of duty” to support the retail industry in combating fraud,
protecting assets and reducing losses.
This year’s honoree is Department of Homeland Security Special Agent John
Willis, who is being recognized for his work during a 10-year investigation into
an organized retail crime group based in San Diego that targeted specialty
retail stores. Bringing together multiple retail investigators and law
enforcement agencies, Willis’ work led to the 2017 arrest and conviction of 15
suspects and helped reduce violent theft incidents at shopping malls throughout
Southern California. The investigation, which recovered approximately $500,000
in merchandise stolen from more than 50 retailers, has been used as an example
of successful collaboration between retail and law enforcement in combating ORC
losses.

The D&D Daily to Film at Expo Solution Provider Booths
Due to four separate but intricately connected things, the D&D Daily will not be
filming the Live at NRF Protect series at this show regretfully.
With our managing editor expecting their first child literally today, we just
cannot expect or allow him to come out to the West Coast. And given his managing
the entire post-production effort for typically over 35 videos and taking over
two months to complete, once again we can't allow it, as he needs to focus on
his family.
With another editor and co-director having a family member in hospice we just
can't allow him to come out west, although he was committed to doing so.
And with the publisher having been out over two months with health issues and
coming late to market with the effort, we just can not produce the quality
series that we're committed to delivering.
With over 513 total videos recorded and in many cases streamed Live, covering 17
events since 2014. The Daily's LPNN series have had 1,252,521 views. Numbers
that prove the value and show how our industry is truly developing and
communicating. We'd like to thank everyone who takes part and hope all of you
see the value for the industry long term.
Lastly, and absolutely we're looking forward to our 'Live in NYC at the NRF Big
Show' 2020 series and 2020's LP New Year's dinner party and hope you can join us

Drug Positivity Rates Affect Retail More Than Any Other Sector
82% of positive drug tests in retail are for
marijuana
Drug positivity rates affect retail the most, according to the
First Advantage's Vertical Trends & Insights fourth report, focused on the
retail, transportation, staffing, healthcare and financial services.
In Retail, 5.8 percent test positive for drug use. Next is Staffing at
3.9 percent, then Transportation at 2.9 percent, Healthcare at 2.4 percent and
Financial Services at one percent. Retail criminal discrepancy rates
increased from 4.99 percent in 2017 to 6.11 percent in 2018, driven by a 0.7
percent increase in drug possession.
Criminal Records are the clear leader across verticals when it comes to what
companies are screening for. Staffing stays focused on crime; however, all other
verticals branch out to a few key searches on average. Retail worries about
sex offenders, Healthcare focuses on employment and Financial Services on
fingerprint “rap sheet” or criminal record adjudication. Transportation
companies consistently order the most comprehensive reports, opting to include
most searches available.
Most common drug positivity - marijuana. For Retail and Financial
Services, 82.3 percent percent of positive drug test results were for marijuana,
followed by Staffing at 81.4 percent, Transportation at 73.4 percent and
Healthcare at 59.9 percent. Amphetamines come in second for all other
industries except Transportation.
The most ineligible crimes in Retail included:
● 8.2 percent Assault & Battery
● 7.4 percent Theft
● 5.2 percent Drugs - Distribution
● 5.1 percent Burglary
● 4.7 percent Drugs - Possession
● 3.5 percent Fraud
● 3.2 percent Marijuana - Possession

Study: Majority of Americans Favor Shopping at Retail Stores
That Conduct Employee Background Checks
Sterling, the world’s leader in background and identity services, today released
the results of its 2019 Retail Industry Screening Survey. An inaugural
initiative, the survey examines Americans’ perspectives, experiences and
concerns related to retail screening - covering topics from customer service to
holiday shopping to cannabis screening.
According to the survey, 67% of Americans say they are more likely to
shop at a retail store whose workers have been background checked than at a
retail store whose workers have not been background checked.
In addition, 49% say that if they found out that a retail store they go
to doesn’t background check all of their workers, they would be less likely to
go back to that store.
The study also found:
-
MARIJUANA TESTING: 65% of Americans say that drug
testing retail workers for cannabis is unnecessary.
-
HOLIDAY SHOPPING: 53% say that during the holiday
season, they notice that retail workers tend to be lower quality than they
are during other times of year.
-
CUSTOMER SERVICE: 81% say that while shopping, when
deciding what retailer to go to in person, they factor in a retailer’s
quality of customer service.

Walmart will start delivering groceries to your fridge - even when you're not
home
Store associates will be required to wear body cameras
InHome
Delivery starts this fall in Kansas City, Pittsburgh, and Vero Beach,
covering a population of nearly 1 million customers. "We’ll learn, and scale
from there,” McMillon added.
Here’s how InHome works: A Walmart shopper places their grocery order on the
website or app and upon checking out they select InHome Delivery and the day
they want the items delivered.
Next, Walmart uses its existing online grocery personal shoppers to pick and
prepare the order, and the customer receives a status update along the way. A
“vetted” associate who has been with the company for at least a year picks
up the order and delivers it to the customer’s home. The associate uses smart
access technology to enter the garage or kitchen.
That person will have a wearable camera on their chest that acts as a
“physical check” or two-step verification, and won’t be able to access the home
if the camera is not streaming or recording.
The customer can watch remotely as the order is placed in the
refrigerator, and they also get access to a replay. The associate will then lock
the door or close the garage and notify the customer.

office and the bill’s sponsor, City Councilman Ritchie Torres (D), are working
together to shape a bill, introduced in February, that could go before the full

Palmer of Palmer Recovery Attorneys to
surrender license
A matter that has had an incredible impact on the entire civil recovery effort
nationwide regretfully.
James Palmer admitted to the Florida Bar since October 1984 had petitioned the
Florida Supreme to accept the disciplinary revocation of his law license.
Palmer's petition comes as a result of an extensive Bar investigation into his
Civil Recovery firm based in Central Florida. The initial complaint filed by the
Florida Bar against Palmer in September 2018 and identifies numerous
unregistered trust and operating accounts were being utilized to move client
funds. The complaint identified over $2,000,000 in loans taken to cover
distribution shortfalls of client funds. As a result of the revocation of his
license (disbarment) Palmer can no longer practice law, hold himself out as an
attorney, or associate in any form with any legal practice including his

Prison sentence given to eBay seller who sold $200k worth
of counterfeit airbags
A California man who sold hundreds of counterfeit airbag covers online was
sentenced Friday to six months in federal prison. Pavel Ryzhenkov, a 33-year-old
married father of four children, imported fake covers from China and sold them
on eBay for at least four times the amount he paid, according to the government.
Ryzhenkov said he never intended to harm anybody. His lawyer, Ron Peters, argued
that Ryzhenkov considered the covers only “decorative parts’’ and didn’t think
they could cause any danger.

ALTO US Teams Up with Anaheim Police Department for 'Carne Asada with a Cop'
Community Outreach Event
Visit ALTO
US at NRF Protect
Booth #649
The smell of fresh carne asada, tortillas, cilantro, and lime permeated the air
at Northgate Market on South Euclid Street the afternoon of Thursday, April 11.
Local residents and shoppers were joined by Anaheim Police Department personnel
to enjoy some tasty tacos and quality conversation during the Carne Asada
with a Cop event.
“A significant portion of our communities do their shopping here,” Anaheim
Police Chief Jorge Cisneros said. “So in order to build a relationship with
them, it is extremely important that we engage and reach out to discuss any
issues that they may have and see what ways we can help.”
ALTO represents Northgate Markets, and other Alliance retail members, to
ensure offenders are held accountable for their actions.
"ALTO has been a great partner, helping us to increase associate awareness
relative to reporting and deterring shoplifters and developing store leader
partnerships with law enforcement," said Mike Bowers, Vice President for
Northgate Gonzalez Markets. "The outcome of this work is in an improved
shopping experience for customers, and an even more engaging work environment
for our associates"
Although ALTO works on behalf of the market, they understand the importance of
working closely together with both law enforcement agencies.
“When we were talking to retailers and law enforcement prosecutors before, we
found out that everybody was pointing fingers at each other, and nothing was
changing,” ALTO Alliance Attorney Brian Lee said. “There was this huge
gap in communication between the three parties (officers, retailers, and judges).”
“We’re building that relationship right off the bat so that we know who to
contact right away and retailers have a resource to use as well,” Lee added.
“The more that we set these up, the more everybody’s willing to work with each
other.”

The #1 Global Law Enforcement Model - The FBI
Global Collaboration "Bearing Fruit"
Law Enforcement Looks Across Borders to Tackle Evolving Cyber Threats
The changing nature of cyber crime is forcing law-enforcement agencies to
abandon their instincts to work alone and instead share information with
colleagues in other countries and the private sector.
Officials say the approach is bearing fruit. Moreover, collaboration is
critical to future enforcement efforts, said Efrene Sakilayan, a
London-based assistant legal attaché for the U.S. FBI.
"The volume of attacks is increasing, but the capacity to look into it remains,
for the most part, the same. The solution to this is really continued
cooperation among different countries,” he said, speaking on a panel at the WSJ
Pro Cybersecurity Executive Forum here last week.
In the past, Mr. Sakilayan said, the FBI tended to pursue investigations on its
own, relying on tools such as extradition to prosecute suspects in cyber crime
cases. After a number of years, however, the FBI “realized that we can’t
extradite our way out of this problem,” he said.
In addition, he said, the lines between the traditional categories of attackers
are increasingly blurred.
“Even five years ago, things were a lot simpler. You were a nation-state,
a criminal, or a hacktivist. What we’re seeing now is a convergence of
criminality, where you can be a nation-state actor by day and organized crime
by night, and that makes it extremely challenging for law enforcement,” he
said.
Hackers' ability to shift profiles creates jurisdictional issues for cyber cops.
While law enforcement will investigate domestic incidents, those that involve
foreign military units or other nation-state actors fall under the purview of
intelligence agencies, or those with joint roles, including the FBI.
This means that agencies are being forced to cooperate with one another
regularly and develop processes for rapid information sharing, a process that
took months or years in the past.

Nanotechnology: The Surefire Way to Combat
Counterfeit Goods
You can buy just about anything online these days, and a fake version of just
about anything, too. In fact, you may have done so without even realizing it.
From handbags to cleaning solutions, the online marketplace is filled with
pirated goods, making it easy for them to find their way into your shopping
cart. To make matters worse, Amazon and eBay haven’t been doing enough to remove
fake goods from their sites. By failing to do their due diligence, the
e-commerce giants have allowed these unacceptable business practices to lead to
immense profits.
Because the distinction between authentic and counterfeit items are practically
impossible to detect, consumers are unknowingly purchasing low-quality goods,
thinking it is the real deal.
Right now, U.S. Customs is responsible for identifying which shipments contain
counterfeit products. But, with no detection tools in place, these officials are
constantly playing a guessing game. A brand’s reputation rests in the hands of
these ill-equipped individuals. Just one wrong decision can cost a company
millions in potential sales and reputational damage.
The inability of Customs to detect these fakes has allowed the total amount of
global counterfeiting to skyrocket. In fact, the counterfeit economy is
projected to reach
$1.82 trillion USD by the year 2020.
Utilizing cutting-edge technology, brands can keep track of their goods
throughout the supply chain and ensure product integrity. For example,
companies can apply Certified QR Codes or tracking devices powered by
nanotechnology to a product’s packaging. These solutions can give brands
more insight into where their assets are in real-time. They also allow customers
to verify authenticity prior to purchasing.

Your self-evaluation is probably the most important document you'll write all
year and it requires a degree of self-reflection and openness that, if done
correctly, thoroughly, realistically and written well, will in actuality garner
more respect than virtually anything else you can do. However, it's also a
double-edged sword that mandates your adherence and constant effort to reach
your written objectives and goals. The problem is that while most are rather
open about their areas of improvement, very few actually quantify what they are
going to do to improve and set specific goals that are realistically obtainable.
The first step may be in just approaching and completing the reviews of your
direct reports first and doing them with the same intensity and focus as you do
yours. This step gets you in the game so to speak and allows you to tie yours
into your teams and also may just give you some feedback you need to hear.
Just a Thought, Gus
