Europol: 800 criminals arrested so far in biggest ever law enforcement operation against encrypted communication

FBI encrypted phone app leads to hundreds of global underworld arrests

Hundreds of criminal gang members around the world were tricked into using a phone encryption app operated by the FBI to plan their heinous crimes, leading to their arrests.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Dutch National Police (Politie), and the Swedish Police Authority (Polisen), in cooperation with the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and 16 other countries have carried out with the support of Europol one of the largest and most sophisticated law enforcement operations to date in the fight against encrypted criminal activities.

Since 2019, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, in close coordination with the Australian Federal Police, strategically developed and covertly operated an encrypted device company, called ANOM, which grew to service more than 12 000 encrypted devices to over 300 criminal syndicates operating in more than 100 countries, including Italian organised crime, outlaw motorcycle gangs, and international drug trafficking organizations.

The goal of the new platform was to target global organised crime, drug trafficking, and money laundering organisations, regardless of where they operated, and offer an encrypted device with features sought by the organised crime networks, such as remote wipe and duress passwords, to persuade criminal networks to pivot to the device.

The FBI and the 16 other countries of the international coalition, supported by Europol and in coordination with the US Drug Enforcement Administration, then exploited the intelligence from the 27 million messages obtained and reviewed them over 18 months while ANOM’s criminal users discussed their criminal activities. Shootings Continue to Skyrocket in NYC - Up 68%
Shootings surge in NYC — with potential for long, bloody summer ahead
Shootings have surged across New York City by more than 68 percent so far in 2021, according to new NYPD crime statistics — with the typically bloody summer months still to come.

Through Sunday, the five boroughs had seen 602 shooting incidents in 2021, wounding or killing 687 victims, the CompStat figures show.

By comparison, the city logged 358 shootings striking 409 people through the same point in 2020 — a year that saw New York surpass its 2019 shooting total by early August.

Mayor Bill de Blasio on Monday decried the senseless slaying, but warned that the city is “going to be dealing with a major challenge” for the remainder of the year.

The latest stats show signs that the warm-weather spike may be beginning, with 153 shooting incidents encompassing 184 victims in the 28-day period ending Sunday.

By comparison, the same period in 2020 saw 116 shootings striking 134 victims, increases of 31.9 and 37.3 percent, respectively, the data shows.

Among the seven major “index crimes” tracked by the department, four have seen increases so far in 2021, compared to the same point last year: grand larceny auto, murder, felony assault and rape.

The other three — burglary, robbery and grand larceny — are down, with a 24.6 percent plunge in burglaries helping drive an overall 2.7 percent drop in index crime. nypost.com

Same Shooting Spike Plagues Chicago - Up 17%
Chicago police look to slow down crime as shootings spike

Five people were killed & at least 55 were injured over the weekend, a week after three people died and 34 others were wounded over the Memorial Day weekend.

A surge in shootings over back-to-back weekends in Chicago has brought fears of a violent summer to the city. Five people were killed and at least 55 more were injured in shootings over the weekend. The violence followed a Memorial Day weekend in which three people were killed and 34 others were wounded.

Homicides are up by 5 percent and shootings are up by 17 percent this year compared to the same period last year, Police Superintendent David Brown said at the news conference. Homicides tend to peak in the summer in Chicago and elsewhere.

Before the most recent spate of shootings, violent crime had been falling in Chicago this year, according to the police department. May was the second straight month the number of homicides in the city declined compared to the same month last year, police said. There was also less violent crime over Memorial Day weekend compared to last year.

Cities All Across America Seeing Violence Uptick
Gun violence leaves fatalities in Chicago, Portland, Miami-Dade and other cities
Mass shootings and gun violence took the lives of at least 16 people with multiple people wounded across the United States last weekend. Five people were killed in a weekend of violence in Chicago while eight people were killed in mass shootings in Oregon, Indiana, Utah, and Michigan. A high school student was killed in New Jersey and two people were killed early Monday morning in Florida. Eight people were wounded at a graduation party in Cleveland. In New Orleans, eight people were injured in a single shooting incident. Five people were wounded in a shooting in Oakland.

In a Monday news conference, Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said murders in the city are up 5% and shootings are up 17% compared to this date a year ago. "Much of the violence that we have seen over this weekend and throughout the year is driven by a gang culture. Gang culture of retaliation and revenge. Some call it street justice," Brown said. The weekend of violence comes as the CPD reported the lowest number of murders over Memorial Day weekend in 10 years. cnn.com

Cities Reverse Defunding the Police Amid Rising Crime
An increase in crime, new funds from the economic revival and federal stimulus dollars spur cities to rethink cuts

One year after the movement to “defund” law enforcement began to upend municipal budgets, many American cities are restoring money to their police departments or proposing to spend more.

In New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio said he would reinstate $92 million for a new precinct after scrapping the project last summer. The mayor of Baltimore, who led efforts as a city councilman to cut the police budget by $22 million last year, recently proposed a $27 million increase.

In the nation’s 20 largest local law-enforcement agencies, city and county leaders want funding increases for nine of the 12 departments where next year’s budgets already have been proposed. The increases range from 1% to nearly 6%.

After attacks on Asian-Americans and a rise in homicides in Oakland, Calif., city lawmakers in April restored $3.3 million of the $29 million in police cuts, and the mayor is now proposing to increase the department’s budget by $24 million. Los Angeles’s mayor has proposed an increase of about $50 million after the city cut $150 million from its police department last year.

City officials have found it difficult to keep police budgets down after seeing a rise in crime over the past year, with murder rates up by double digits in many cities. In the last three months of 2020, homicides rose 32.2% in cities with a population of at least one million,

Justice Department Issues Proposed Rule and Model Legislation to Reduce Gun Violence
New Steps Would Enhance Enforcement of the National Firearms Act and Aid States in Drafting “Extreme Risk Protection Order” Laws

Today, the Department of Justice announced two new steps to help address the continuing epidemic of gun violence affecting communities across the country. First, the department issued a notice of proposed rulemaking that makes clear that when individuals use accessories to convert pistols into short-barreled rifles, they must comply with the heightened regulations on those dangerous and easily concealable weapons. Second, the department published model legislation to help states craft their own “extreme risk protection order” laws, sometimes called “red flag” laws. By sending the proposed rule to the Federal Register and publishing the model legislation today, the department has met the deadlines that the Attorney General announced alongside President Biden in April. justice.gov

More than two dozen Antifa rioters charged for Portland mayhem
More than two dozen suspected Antifa rioters have been charged in Portland in the past two weeks, signaling an escalation by both local and federal prosecutors following a full year of riots in the besieged Oregon city.

On Thursday, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office announced charges against 10 suspects following several grand jury indictments.

The charges are a 180-degree turn for left-wing District Attorney Mike Schmidt, who last year dropped over 90 percent of riot and protest-related cases. In an interview with Willamette Week shortly before he entered office at the height of rioting in August 2020, Schmidt said: “I think that when you look historically at this nation, it’s during these protests when we’ve gotten some of the changes that we are proudest of in our nation’s history. And sometimes it took some property damage. It took more than just peaceful protests to get the government’s attention. I’m very mindful of that.”

However, a spokesman for the district attorney tells The Post that Schmidt has “continuously condemned property damage and violence.” nypost.com

Police in riot gear enforce new Washington Square Park curfew
Chaos erupted in Washington Square Park on Saturday as NYPD officers tried to enforce a newly-instated 10 p.m. curfew.

Police in riot gear clashed with scores of parkgoers who stayed in the Greenwich Village space past deadline.

At least 22 people were arrested for unlawful assembly and violation of park rules, according to law enforcement sources. Five cops were injured, the sources said.

Police and city parks department officials instituted the temporary weekend curfew amid complaints of rampant drug use, loud music and large gatherings in the center of the historically free-spirited neighborhood. Previously, the park’s closing time was midnight. nypost.com

D.C. mayor announces public safety grants to help stem gun violence
D.C. officials plan to distribute grants of up to $5,000 to people who create activities that promote public safety. Grants of up to $50,000 will go to organizations or groups to create programs to help reduce gun violence — including restorative justice initiatives, neighborhood restoration and community engagement.

Linda Harllee Harper, the District’s director of gun violence prevention, said the grant applications will be simple and are aimed at residents and small groups trying to curb violence. Applications can be submitted starting June 14. washingtonpost.com

These States Have Banned Vaccine Passports
Several states have now enacted laws that ban certain requirements – such as so-called ‘vaccine passports’ – based on COVID-19 inoculation status.

The concept, broadly referred to as "vaccine passports," provides proof of vaccination for activities such as traveling or attending concerts. Americans' level of support for the idea varies by activity, according to a May 7 Gallup survey. A majority of respondents favor mandated vaccination certification for airplane travel (57%) and attendance at crowded events, such as concerts or sports (55%). But a majority of those surveyed also oppose proving inoculation status to go to one's workplace, stay at a hotel or dine indoors at a restaurant.

Officials in the Joe Biden administration have repeatedly insisted that there aren't plans for a federal vaccine passport system. White House press secretary Jen Psaki said during a May 21 press briefing that requiring proof of vaccination is not in the administration's "intended plan." No-Mask Mandates Come with Risks
Employers may want vaccinated employees to remove their face masks while working but should think twice before requiring employees to work without masks. From health, employee relations and legal perspectives, it may be safer for employers to give vaccinated employees the option to work without masks, provided state and local laws allow them to do so.

Some companies may want employees to remove masks to indicate to customers that things are returning to normal, noted Corbin Carter, an attorney with Mintz in New York City. Other employers may want to remove masks based on owners' political ideologies. Removing masks may be a potential retention tool where employees don't want to work with face masks, he added.

Some employers are considering putting only vaccinated people without masks in various positions, such as serving customers at a restaurant, said Robert Duston, an attorney with Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr in Washington, D.C.

"But employers should still tread carefully before requiring the removal of face masks—a viable safety measure—from their workplace solely based on optics, political ideology or for retention purposes," Carter said. "Instead, employers should consider allowing fully vaccinated employees the option to remove their face masks, while imploring everyone in the workplace to respect each individual's decision as to whether to wear a face mask in the presence of others." shrm.org

Up to 70 shopping centres across the UK could be forced to close as the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic continue to manifest in the retail sector. A further 34 have between 40 per cent and 50 per cent of their shops vacant, with at least 10 shops in them.

Employers Step Up Efforts to Raise Workers’ Vaccination Rates
New guidance greenlights incentives, which few employers have offered to date
Before the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) gave employers the go-ahead to incentivize workers to get COVID-19 vaccines, few businesses were offering cash or other rewards to vaccinated employees.

Using financial incentives to promote coronavirus shots may now increase following the EEOC's May 28 release of updated and expanded technical assistance on how the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) apply when an employer offers incentives to employees to get a COVID-19 vaccine.

Even this modest and vaguely defined restriction, however, does not apply when employers offer incentives to employees who voluntarily provide documentation that they received a COVID-19 vaccination on their own from a third-party provider that is not their employer or an agent of their employer, such as a pharmacy, public health department or other health care provider in the community. shrm.org

Employers Contend with Conflicts over Masks, Vaccinations
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) recent guidance on masks has encouraged some vaccinated employees to go maskless in the workplace. While the guidance may result in more people receiving COVID-19 vaccinations and ease the return to the workplace, workers who oppose vaccinations may be frustrated by rules that still require them to wear masks. This frustration is one of several contributing to mask- and vaccination-related workplace tensions.

The CDC's new guidelines allowing vaccinated workers to remove masks "has created a two-tiered system in many workplaces," said David Barron, an attorney with Cozen O'Connor in Houston. Vaccinated workers are relieved of masking and other COVID-19 precautions, while nonvaccinated workers must continue to follow safety rules.

"Understandably, this may create division in the workplace and anger from those who continue to be held to the extra safety precautions, especially as the news improves and the need for the continued precautions may be hard to understand," he said. shrm.org

62% of Manhattan Workers Back in Offices by September, But Safety a Concern
Right now only 12% are back. 29% by end of July.

But there’s another dark cloud hovering over the city, as transit crime has emerged as a major concern for the workforce.

A significant 84 percent of corporate executives report “that employee perceptions of mass transit are still an obstacle to returning to the office due largely to concerns about personal safety (cleanliness of the system is less of a concern than in earlier surveys),” the survey said.

The vast majority of employers — 71 percent — plan to adopt a rotating or “hybrid” office schedule. Most workers will be required to be in the office three days per week.

The survey asked about COVID safety policies. Only 27 of 180 companies said they will require that all employees be vaccinated for COVID-19. Others said they will actively encourage employees to get vaccinated.

But nearly half of employers said they will restrict unvaccinated workers from attending in-person or client meetings and a third will require the unvaccinated to wear masks or practice social distancing.

Many corporations have lifted workforce travel restrictions. More than 60 percent have resumed business travel, the survey found.

The Partnership asked employers to rank factors that they believe are the greatest impediments to employees’ return to the office:

About four in 10 said COVID-19 was the largest factor and another 34 percent cited vaccination rates as most pressing.

CEO of 'HD View 360' a Security Surveillance Systems - Publicly Traded Company
Gets 15 Months Prison & Ordered to Pay $1.2M in Restitution for Securities Fraud
In federal court in Brooklyn, Dennis Mancino, of Miami, FL., the former Chief Executive Officer of HD View 360, Inc., a publicly traded penny stock company that purported to distribute and install security surveillance systems, was sentenced to 15 months’ imprisonment for conspiracy to commit securities fraud. Mancino’s conviction stemmed from his participation in a scheme to manipulate the price and trading volume of HD View’s stock, which traded under the ticker symbol HDVW. Mancino was also ordered to pay more than $1.2 million in restitution and $257,000 in forfeiture. Mancino pleaded guilty in September 2019.

Mancino also agreed to pay kickbacks to stock brokers who would execute manipulative trades designed to increase the price and trading volume of HD View’s stock. justice.gov

The country’s largest supermarket chain will hold its first-ever hybrid hiring event, which will include virtual and in-store interviews, on June 10. Kroger is looking to hire 10,000 employees to support its retail, e-commerce, pharmacy, manufacturing and logistics operation.

Kroger said it made an $800 million incremental investment in employee pay and training during the last three years, which has raised its average national wage to more than $15.50 per hour. The May ransomware attack on Colonial Pipeline exposed the country’s significant vulnerability to cyberthreats.

The attack triggered lines at gas stations, higher prices at the pump, and even some hoarding. It prompted new federal cybersecurity regulations for the pipeline industry and a presidential executive order on cyber defenses. And it brought calls for tougher defenses against such attacks.

“Clearly our path to date hasn’t been good, because of how many companies are dealing with ransomware or data breaches,” says Matt Stamper, CISO and an executive advisor at Evotek and a leader at the IT governance association ISACA.

Many security leaders concur.

A widespread internet outage took down multiple websites Tuesday morning, including Amazon, Google, Reddit, CNN and USA TODAY.

DownDetector, a site that tracks website outages, reported that a long list of sites, which also included Youtube, Instagram, Twitter, Hulu, Spotify, Etsy and Paypal, started experiencing problems just after 5:30 a.m. EDT Tuesday. Comcast, Verizon and Cox were also impacted.

The outage may be linked to Fastly, a cloud platform that powers websites such as The New York Times and Shopify.

A status update posted by Fastly acknowledged the service was investigating “potential impact to performance” with content delivery network services.

“The issue has been identified and a fix has been applied,” read the latest update from Fastly posted at 6:57 a.m. usatoday.com

In a typical hybrid workplace, some employees will be in the office, some will be working from home—or spaces like coffee shops and client headquarters—and some will be cycling back and forth. Devices, too, are moving in and out of the company network, with employees bringing their laptops onto company networks and then taking them back home—where they’re much more exposed to hackers and can easily get infected with malware.

So, security chiefs are faced with the task of supporting a constantly changing mix of office workers and remote workers, and company and home devices. Whereas security teams were able to focus on protecting the remote workforce during stay-at-home orders, doing so when employees are in the office for certain days of the week and at home for others will be difficult, says Rick McElroy, principal cybersecurity strategist at VMware Inc.’s Security Business Unit.

“It’s hard to maintain a security staff that looks one way in the data center or one way in an office, and then one way for remote employees,” he says.

Making things even worse: Security teams have been stretched thin by the demands of the pandemic. For the past year, they’ve had to make sure everyone is equipped to work from everywhere and can use critical tools such as virtual meeting rooms. Things will only get tighter now that businesses are hiring more workers and launching into new projects they had put on hold during the pandemic.

Hackers were quick to realize that insecure home networks and a lack of security controls typically found on corporate networks could work to their benefit. The World Economic Forum estimates that cyberattacks jumped 238% globally between February and April 2020. wsj.com

Apple’s tightly controlled App Store is teeming with scams
Nearly 2 percent of Apple’s top-grossing apps on one day were scams — and they have cost people $48 million

Apple chief executive Tim Cook has long argued it needs to control app distribution on iPhones, otherwise the App Store would turn into “a flea market.”

But among the 1.8 million apps on the App Store, scams are hiding in plain sight. Customers for several VPN apps, which allegedly protect users’ data, complained in Apple App Store reviews that the apps told users their devices have been infected by a virus to dupe them into downloading and paying for software they don’t need. A QR code reader app that remains on the store tricks customers into paying $4.99 a week for a service that is now included in the camera app of the iPhone. Some apps fraudulently present themselves as being from major brands such as Amazon and Samsung.

Of the highest 1,000 grossing apps on the App Store, nearly two percent are scams, according to an analysis by The Washington Post.

What’s more, Apple profits from these apps because it takes a cut of up to 30 percent of all revenue generated through the App Store. Even more common, according to The Post’s analysis, are “fleeceware” apps that use inauthentic customer reviews to move up in the App Store rankings and give apps a sense of legitimacy to convince customers to pay higher prices for a service usually offered elsewhere with higher legitimate customer reviews. washingtonpost.com

Two Dominican Republic Citizens Plead Guilty to Mail Fraud and Aggravated Identity Theft Scheme
Wilver Jose Polanco-Alvarez, a 26-year-old Dominican Republic citizen residing in Miami, and Jose Eduardo Gomez Salas, a 25-year-old Dominican Republic citizen residing in New York, admitted in federal court today to using stolen personal identification information to obtain high-end electronic devices such as cell phones, laptop computers, tablets and watches.

Review of Gomez’s iPhone revealed personal identification information of multiple individuals as well as photographs of Polanco assuming and utilizing different aliases in the form of fraudulent driver’s licenses from six states: Indiana, Texas, California, New Mexico, South Carolina and Tennessee.

The defendants operated a scheme in at least five different states with the help of others to purchase and activate cell phones and other electronic devices at retail stores using fraudulent identification documents and stolen personal identification information to include wireless account information. After collecting the new phones and devices, Gomez mailed the items to 28-year-old alleged ringleader Marcos Andres Briceno-Romero in New Jersey.

Polanco and Gomez have remained in federal custody since their arrest in April 2020. They face up to 20 years in federal prison on the conspiracy charge. Each aggravated identity theft charge calls for a mandatory two years in federal prison. Sentencing has yet to be scheduled. justice.gov

New Orleans Man Gets Six Years in Prison for Charges Related To Credit Card Fraud Conspiracy
JEFFERY JOSEPH, age 26, a resident of New Orleans, was sentenced to 74 months in prison. He was the fourth defendant to be sentenced in this seven-defendant conspiracy case.

U.S. Secret Service revealed that JOSEPH and the other six defendants engaged in a scheme to obtain merchandise and cash from stores through fraud. The defendants obtained stolen credit and debit card information, encoded it onto cards, and then used that information to purchase items at stores. The defendants would then return the items at a different store of the same chain, but they would deceive store workers in order to have the chargeback credited to their own bank accounts. Court documents also detail how JOSEPH took flights with several other co-conspirators to perform fraudulent credit card transactions in various cities in the United States, including St. Louis, Missouri; Richmond, Virginia; Nashville, Tennessee; Portland, Oregon; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Cincinnati, Ohio. JOSEPH was also arrested in Minnetonka, Minnesota, and Franklin, Tennessee, while committing credit card fraud.

In his plea documents, JOSEPH admitted that he caused between $250,000.00 and $550,000.00 in losses through his own conduct and that of his co-conspirators. justice.gov

Pasco, WA: Police arrest suspect seen on Lowes security camera multiple times
Pasco Police Officers arrested an organized retail thief that has been stealing lawn and construction equipment from big-box retailers in the Kennewick and Pasco Area. The Kennewick Police Department originally posted on their Facebook page asking the community for help identifying the suspect from security cameras in April 2021. On Friday afternoon, Pasco Police arrested 24-year-old Josue Daniel Sepulveda-Zuniga at about 5 PM on Sandifur near Valdez after officers were forced to physically block the minivan he was driving to make him stop.

Arresting officers reported that he tried to ram the police car in front of him to create space to drive out, but officers adjusted their positioning to keep him there. There was a short standoff with the suspect inside the minivan before he was convinced to exit peacefully. He was arrested without further incident and was booked into Franklin County Jail on investigative holds for Organized Retail Theft and Attempting to Elude. Lowes reported that this time, he dropped two items, ran to a red minivan, and left. The minivan did not want to stop but got successfully boxed in front and back by the patrol cars. nbcrightnow.com

Havana, FL: Ex-Furniture Store Employee charged with defrauding company of over $63k
Agents with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement arrested a woman from Bainbridge, Georgia, for defrauding her employer of over $63,000. According to FDLE, the investigation began in July 2018 when the Havana Police Department requested assistance with a case involving alleged retail theft from a furniture store in Havana. A manager at the store had reported that when he began to review activity he discovered multiple accounts with false address information, no phone numbers, no identification information copied for the file, no paper file created and no client signatures being obtained, FDLE says.

According to the report, all but one of the accounts had been created by one of the store's employees, 39-year-old Shendora Vonta Adams. FDLE says Adams was using her unique employee personal identification number. The one fraudulent account had been created using a separate employee identification number; however, that employee had left the store months before the account was created. FDLE said it also appeared that multiple accounts were created with personal information of prisoners in the Georgia Department of Corrections, a deceased person and associates of Adams. The investigation found Adams used the identities of multiple people without permission to steal $63,449.85 in merchandise from the store between November 2017 and March 2018. wtxl.com

Orange County, FL: Murder suspect shoots self inside Big Lots store
A murder suspect is in critical condition after deputies say he tried to take his own life inside a Central Florida retail store. The man is accused in a shooting that killed a woman and critically injured a 3 year old girl at an Orange County apartment complex late Sunday night. Deputies say he shot himself after they approached him inside this Big Lots on Monday night just before 8pm. Deputies have not identified the suspect yet, but say he is 37 years old. Investigators say the suspect shot a woman and a 3-year old girl late Sunday night at the Wellesley apartment complex a half mile away. The woman, 37-year-old Capucine Carson, died. Deputies say the child is in the hospital in critical condition. fox35orlando.com

Tempe, AZ: Son accused of stabbing father to death at Fry's parking lot
A man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing his father to death in Tempe, police say. Police were called to the parking lot of a Fry's near Rural and Ray Road on June 4 and found a man with stab wounds. He later died at the hospital. The suspect, 20-year-old Joshua Fox, took off before police arrived and crashed his car nearby, Fox told police he had been in an argument with his father before the stabbing happened but he "blacked out." He was taken into custody on second-degree murder charges. fox10phoenix.com

Louisville Metro Police is investigating after a liquor store employee was shot to death Monday morning in Louisville's Taylor Berry neighborhood. LMPD said officers were called to the 3200 block of Taylor Boulevard, near Arcade Avenue, at 11:45 a.m. Monday on a report of a shooting. Kito Azi Weaver, 22, was arrested Sunday and charged with four counts of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, said Lt. Michael Chavis of the Rock Hill Police Department. Weaver argued with employees at the Domino’s Pizza on White Street around 1:30 a.m. Sunday because the store was closed, Weaver went back to his car and returned with a gun, Chavis said. Weaver is charged with firing at least four shots at four employees from outside the store, Chavis said. No one was injured. charlotteobserver.com

Marietta, GA: CVS bringing time-delay safes to GA pharmacies to curb opioid theft
One of the nation’s leading drug store chains is expanding an initiative aimed at the opioid epidemic in Georgia. CVS Health announced Monday it has finished installing time-delay safes at all 355 of its Georgia pharmacy locations, including those in Target stores. The safes, now in use in 18 states and the District of Columbia, have driven significant declines in robberies at CVS pharmacies. The time-delay function, which cannot be overridden, electronically delays the time it takes for pharmacy employees to open a safe, deterring would-be robbers trying to get in and out of stores as quickly as possible. “We’ve seen smash-and-grab crimes all over the state,” Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr said Monday during a news conference at a CVS store near Marietta. “We must have innovative solutions in place to stop controlled substances from getting into the wrong hands.” “The opioid challenge is complicated,” added Tom Moriarty, chief policy officer and general counsel at CVS Health. “But with each resource and partnership, we take another step.” capitol-beat.org

Anne Arundel County, MD: Police Investigating After Customer Assaults Taco Bell Employee
Anne Arundel County Police are investigating after an employee was attacked by a customer at a Taco Bell in Edgewater. Thomas Weitzel Smith, 35, of Edgewater, was charged with assault and destruction of property. Officer responded to 3091 Solomons Island Road shortly after 11:30 a.m. on June 4 for a report of a disorderly person. The caller stated that a customer threw a rock through the drive-thru window and shattered the glass. Once on the scene, officers learned from the victim that Weitzel-Smith entered the store enraged and using profanity. When asked to leave by the manager, the suspect threw a stool injuring their hand. Once asked to leave again, Weitzel-Smith threw a rock shattering the drive-thru window. Portland, OR: Man accused of robbing downtown Portland Nordstrom, punching guard and officer
The Portland Police Bureau said its officers arrested a man they say who robbed the city's downtown Nordstrom store and led officers on a chase Saturday evening. PPB said officers responded to reports of a suspect stealing items, assaulting people, and breaking things at the Nordstrom on Southwest Broadway. Updates came in that shots were fired and some callers were reporting an active shooter. Officers arrived and learned the suspect had left. They also confirmed that no shots were fired. The suspect caused such a commotion knocking things over inside the store that customers thought there were gunshots. Police said Lee tipped over at least two large metal and glass displays, which caused loud noises. Customers and employees began fleeing the store. Earned slowly and grown daily, loyalty is a commodity no leader can be without because it fuels success, unifies purpose, and gives birth to exceptional performance. Without loyalty, teams splinter and lose focus on the true objectives. It's rare to build a truly loyal team and it's incredibly difficult to keep them together long term with private agendas always pressuring the balance. And yes, even loyal teams require balancing because at the end of the day it's always about personal agendas. Professional sports teams are constantly looking for that balance and the right players to fit as a team and the same holds true in business. With the right team, anything is possible and conversely one team member can destroy the entire balance. So being a team player is important even when you decide not to be.
