The unending litany of mass shootings in recent years — the latest, on Friday, leaving 12 dead in Virginia Beach, Virginia — has built an unacknowledged community of heartbreak, touching and warping the lives of untold thousands.

All the survivors, none of them unscathed. The loved ones of the living and dead. Their neighbors, relatives and colleagues. The first responders, the health care workers, the elected officials.

The attacks have changed how America talks, prays and prepares for trouble. Today, the phrases “active shooter” and “shelter in place” need no explanation. A house of worship will have a priest, a rabbi or an imam — and maybe, an armed guard. And more schools are holding “lockdown drills” to prepare students for the possibility of a shooter.

Post-traumatic stress disorder was once largely associated with combat-weary veterans; now some police and firefighters tormented by the memories of the carnage they’ve witnessed are seeking professional help. Healing centers have opened to offer survivors therapy and a place to gather. Support groups of survivors of mass shootings have formed.

“There is an element of mass shooting fatigue where we’ve gone from ONE MORE,” she says, her voice rising with exasperation, “to add another one to the list. Everybody immediately goes for the gun argument ... and maybe throw a little mental health in there, but we really don’t have a consistent, prolonged conversation about these events and how to prevent them.”

Studies have offered some hints of their emotional wallop. The National Center for PTSD estimates 28 percent of people who have witnessed a mass shooting develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and about a third develop acute stress disorder.

Mall of America Assailant Was 'Looking For Someone to Kill'
Man Gets 19 Yrs - Threw 5-yr-old From 3rd Floor
The parents of a 5-year-old Minnesota boy who survived being thrown from a third-floor balcony at the Mall of America decried the assailant's actions as "evil" while saying they forgive him at a hearing Monday where a judge handed down a 19-year prison sentence.

When the Hennepin County District Judge asked whether Emmanuel Aranda wanted to say anything on his own behalf, the 24-year-old Minneapolis man responded with a simple, "No." Reding then sentenced him to the term he agreed to when he pleaded guilty last month to attempted premeditated first-degree murder in the April 12 attack.

Aranda told investigators he went to the mall "looking for someone to kill." According to the complaint, he had tried unsuccessfully to talk to women in the mall but their rejection "caused him to lash out and be aggressive." He said he had planned to kill an adult before choosing the child instead.

Landen, plunged almost 40 feet (12 meters) and needed multiple surgeries for head trauma and broken bones. No update on his recovery was provided in court Monday, though his parents described it as miraculous. edmdigest.com

What Retailers Can Learn From Sephora’s Decision to Shut Stores for Diversity Training -- Following High-Profile LP Stop of Singer SZA
Wednesday’s closures will allow the company’s staff to participate in “inclusion workshops,” which Sephora says have been in the planning stages for several months. The move echoes Starbucks’ decision last year to close more than 8,000 U.S. stores for a day of diversity training, which came in the wake of an incident in which an employee called the police on two black men who sat down at a table without ordering anything. Videos shared on social media showed the men — who were waiting for a business meeting to start — being handcuffed and escorted out of the location, prompting widespread outcry.

Fashion retailers have a long history of similar problems. Barneys New York was famously forced to pay out more than $500,000 in response to a 2013 lawsuit accusing the chain of racial profiling after a black customer was apprehended and detained in a holding cell after buying a $349 Salvatore Ferragamo belt. In November, Lord & Taylor agreed to pay $100,000 to resolve an investigation into racial profiling by the Massachusetts Attorney General’s office after a complaint accused the retailer of “[perpetuating] a climate of racial and ethnic bias resulting in, among other things, the disproportionate targeting of black and Hispanic customers for surveillance and apprehension.” Nordstrom Rack, Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Old Navy and Zara have also all had alleged incidents of racial targeting in the past, the consequences of which have ranged from denial to six-figure fines.

The high-profile action on the part of Sephora and Starbucks, though, shows that consumers today are demanding more than a simple apology or a payout on the part of retailers. footwearnews.com

Houston, TX: Subway manager fired after denying black teen a job
Social Media Impact - Manager's Text Messages Go Viral

In just a day, remarks made about high school student Katelyn Simmons in a text written by a Subway manager had taken social media by storm. It was shared 18,000 times and got over 8000 likes and 900 comments.

In a response, Subway said, "the manager of this location was immediately terminated for her actions. The franchise owner has reached out to the young woman who applied for the position to apologize and encourage her to consider re-applying."

But Katelyn's mother Tamika Simmons says that didn't happen and the franchise owner voiced her concerns of violence due to the fired managers text.

"She just assumed again because we were African American that there was going to be some type of violent response to that," she said. fox5dc.com

P&G Ready For Disaster:
Supply Chain Tech Eliminates Guesswork From Weather Emergency Responses
Three years ago, P&G set out to augment that decision-making clearinghouse with technology that could help the team make decisions faster and sooner when supply chain disruptions were on the way — not after they arrived.

The answer came from Canadian tech provider Kinaxis, maker of a product called Rapid Response. The cloud-based software maintains a digital map of P&G’s supply chain, along with the bill of materials (recipe) for every product. Bringing in data from the company’s ERP system, Herzog’s team can run scenarios to find out the best possible adjustment when a link in the supply chain has to be changed for any reason.

Rapid Response alerts Herzog’s planners to all manner of anomaly whether it’s a weather forecast or a string of trucks behind schedule. P&G sets what Kinaxis calls "guard rails" for what constitutes an anomaly or "exception" in the normal course of business and then the software assigns a level of priority to those exceptions based on how important the supplier, route, facility or product in question is to the business. retaildive.com

Square Sends Millions of Digital Receipts, Sometimes to the Wrong Person
From surprise gifts to pending divorces, misdirected notifications result in spilled secrets.

Square has forwarded receipts documenting transactions as mundane as a cup of coffee and as sensitive as an obstetrician’s visit to people who were uninvolved in the purchases, according to emails reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. In some cases, neither the purchaser nor the recipient could say why Square sent receipts to the people it did.

At issue are the methods that tech companies employ to make money off of the financial data of their users, as well as the degree to which those companies disclose or get consent from their users about those efforts. Data on individuals’ credit-card transactions can be particularly delicate and more revealing than their social-media posts or web-browsing activity. wsj.com

Walmart Must Pay $102M For Illegal Pay Stubs
Walmart must pay nearly $102 million for giving workers illegal pay statements, a California federal judge has ruled, while also largely clearing the retail giant of allegations it didn't properly pay hourly employees for missed or shortened meal breaks. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh found that Walmart Inc. violated the California Labor Code by doling out noncompliant wage statements, but that the workers' meal break claims mostly failed to pass legal muster. law360.com

SEC Sues Alleged Head of Cryptocurrency Pyramid Scheme
Man bilked investors out of $26.5 million, selling lessons on e-commerce

The SEC has filed a civil injunctive action against a California man for allegedly heading a pyramid scheme that raised more than $26 million from investors by selling instructional packages that provided lessons on e-commerce.

The SEC’s complaint alleges that Daniel Pacheco conducted a fraudulent, unregistered offering of securities through two California-based companies he controls, IPro Solutions LLC and IPro Network LLC.

“Pacheco hid an old fraud under the guise of cutting-edge technology,” Michele Wein Layne, director of the SEC’s Los Angeles regional office, said in a release. “He enticed investors by offering them the opportunity to speculate in cryptocurrency, when in fact he was simply operating a pyramid scheme.” ai-cio.com

U.S. moving toward major antitrust probe of tech giants
The U.S. government is gearing up to investigate whether Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google misuse their massive market power, sources told Reuters on Monday, setting up what could be an unprecedented, wide-ranging probe of some of the world’s largest companies.

The Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice, which enforce antitrust laws in the United States, have divided oversight over the four companies, two sources said, with Amazon and Facebook under the watch of the FTC, and Apple and Google under the Justice Department.

With jurisdiction established, the next step is for the two federal agencies to decide if they want to open formal investigations. Results are not likely to be quick. A previous FTC probe of Google took more than two years. reuters.com

How Ecommerce Platforms are Becoming Attractive Scam Hotspots
The ease of shopping for the customers and a large, ready-to-tap customer base for the sellers is driving the prolific growth of ecommerce, which is estimated to grow to $4.48 trillion by 2021. Low barriers to entry, significantly lower investments and ability to reach out to a global customer base are some of the reasons more and more sellers are choosing ecommerce platforms to grow their business.

Fake Sellers
However, these same reasons give a chance to the bad actors to exploit these platforms. Scammers create fake seller profiles which they use to sell fake and/or counterfeit items. They also post details of expensive items—that do not actually exist—and offer large discounts to make the offer hard-to-put down. When a buyer makes the payment, these scammers escape with the money while the buyer keeps waiting endlessly for the items that never arrive.

Fake Websites
Scammers often copy posts and pictures from genuine sellers and post them on other platforms or social media. When a prospective buyer clicks the post, she is directed to a fake lookalike website, which is used to phish out customer credentials. Usually these fake websites are up for a short duration and by the time a buyer realizes she may have been duped, the website vanishes. To make matters worse, tech-savvy scammers keep changing the IP addresses, which makes it difficult for law enforcement agencies to catch them. Bad actors also use advanced evasion techniques to avoid detection and escape. dqindia.com

Amazon continues to shrink retail operations
Sellers feel pressure to sell directly on Marketplace, not as Wholesalers
Vendors that to varying degrees depend on Amazon for their wholesale revenue were once again shaken last week by indications that the e-commerce giant might be culling its supplier base within its first-party — aka retail — operations.

Rumors and questions swirled after a Bloomberg report of a "purge" of smaller wholesalers. According to the report, vendors with annual sales of less than $10 million are being shunted to the Amazon Marketplace, "although that will vary by category," Bloomberg reported, citing its discussions with "three people familiar with the plan."

Amazon denied that characterization, both to Bloomberg and to Retail Dive. In an interview with Retail Dive, an Amazon spokesperson said that moving to the Marketplace, which now accounts for over half of goods sold, is often a choice made by the brands themselves.

"We informed Bloomberg prior to publication of their article that their sources and story are wrong," the Amazon spokesperson told Retail Dive in an email. "We review our selling partner relationships on an individual basis as part of our normal course of business, and any speculation of a large-scale reduction of vendors is incorrect."

According to firms that work with Amazon sellers, however, pressure on sellers to move from operating as wholesalers to selling directly through Amazon’s third-party marketplace is indeed happening. While the press coverage suggests that vendors might drop off a cliff, any shift will likely be gradual and could come through indirect action, according to experts who work with sellers. retaildive.com

Royal Oak, MI: Masked men steal $25K worth of drugs from pharmacy
Two men broke into a pharmacy while it was closed and stole $25,000 worth of drugs. Police said the break-in and theft took only three minutes and happened about 5 a.m. May 25 at the Singh Rx Pharmacy at 3412 W. 13 Mile Road. The men wore masks and one of them used a crowbar to pry open the front door of the business. Once inside, police said, the intruders broke through doors to an office area and the pharmacy. They stole tranquilizing, opioid and amphetamine pills from the pharmacy. dailytribune.com

Wrentham, MA: NY men charged with stealing over $8,000 in merchandise from Wrentham outlets
Police say two alleged shoplifters are part of an organized theft ring that targeted stores at the Wrentham Village Premium Outlets and allegedly stole $8,000 in merchandise before they were caught. The suspects, identified as Dennis A. Reyesmora and Carlos K. Limones, were arrested Saturday inside the Under Armour store, according to Police Chief Bill McGrath. thesunchronicle.com

Shippensburg, PA: 2 Arrested for $700 theft of baby formula, dragging Walmart employee across parking lot
Jesus Vazquez, 45, and Mikesha Thomas, 22, both of Shippensburg, are facing retail theft and shoplifting charges for their roles in the incident. On May 22 around 2:30 p.m., police responded to Walmart in Shippensburg Township for a report of shoplifting. Upon arrival, police found that Vazquez and Thomas had stolen 35 cans of baby formula and a floor lamp from the store. In total, police say the duo stole nearly $700 in merchandise. According to police, Thomas was confronted by a store employee in the parking lot at her vehicle. When the employee attempted to prevent Thomas from leaving, she fled the scene in her vehicle, dragging the employee across the parking lot with her vehicle. fox43.com

Allen Park, MI: Shoplifter who may have struck at multiple Meijer stores nabbed in Allen Park
At the store, a loss prevention employee told police that the arrested man is known to have shoplifted at several Meijer locations in recent weeks. The employee said the man was observed filling a shopping cart with meat and Tide products. He then pushed the cart past all points of purchase and exited near the grocery section doors. According to the store, the total value of the stolen merchandise was over $736. thenewsherald.com

Torrance, CA: Gunman Opens Fire At Del Amo Fashion Center
A gunman opened fire at the Del Amo Fashion Center Monday afternoon, wounding one man and triggering a massive evacuation effort. The shooter remained at large Monday. Authorities are advising the community to avoid the Del Amo Fashion Center. The Torrance Police department confirmed that shots were fired Monday. The shooting, at Del Amo Fashion Center mall occurred shortly before 3 p.m. inside the mall near the Finish Line athletic apparel store and the Build-A-Bear Workshop. The shops are near the mall's food court, and the sound of gunfire prompted many to run from the area. One mall employee told KTLA, the shooting happened in front of the Skechers shoe store. The employee said a man and woman were seen arguing when a man walked up shooter and shot the man, and the woman began screaming. ktla.com

Indianapolis, IN: 1 year later, IMPD releases sketch of Dollar General killer
It was on Race Day 2018 when a man wearing a hiking backpack walked into a Dollar General store on Emerson Way, announced a stick up and fatally wounded Brian Eure, the clerk on duty. Surveillance video captured the killer walking through the store in the minutes before the attempted robbery and then apparently becoming irate when Eure reached for the panic button to alert police of a robbery in progress. fox59.com

Atlanta, GA: Police believe Armed Robberies at Cellphone stores across metro are connected
Surveillance video shows a suspect robbing a metro Atlanta AT&T store in January. A man is seen forcing an employee into a backroom, demanding phones. Investigators believe the same suspect was caught on camera robbing a T-Mobile store in Cobb County on May 18. On May 25, a T-Mobile store in East Point was robbed and police believe it's highly likely all three cases are connected because the getaway car in the East Point robbery looks like the same car used in the Cobb County robbery. "We don't want anyone to get hurt. Scottsdale, AZ: Crew of Chilean commercial jewel burglars caught in Peoria
A crew of Chilean commercial jewel thieves tied to crimes in several states was caught in the Valley. Scottsdale police report that last week three men, Abraham Montecino, 28, Cristian Sepulveda, 36 and Juan Cruz, 24, were arrested in Peoria for burglary. The department had received a call from police in Santa Barbara about a crew of Chilean nationals who have stolen over a $100,000 in jewelry from stores in California, Colorado, and Utah. Santa Barbara detectives tracked the crew to six cities in the Valley and believed they would hit stores over the Memorial Day weekend. California detectives reportedly told Scottsdale police that the team would target stores before a long weekend. The group would cut power to the stores and wait for the police to show up. They would wait nearby for the officers to determine there was no active crime in progress, leave, and for the backup batteries to drain. abc15.com

Greenbelt, MD: Crash that caused delays in Prince George's County could be linked to string of ATM robberies
Police say the crash happened around 4 a.m. along the outer loop of Interstate-495 at Kenilworth Avenue. Authorities were pursuing the pickup truck involved in the crash after undercover officers in Montgomery County intervened in what appeared to be a robbery attempt at a 7-Eleven in the Silver Spring area. Law enforcement officers across the D.C. region have been investigating a string of smash-and-grab robberies in which thieves use vehicles to crash into 7-Eleven storefronts and steal the ATM machine inside. fox5dc.com

A Romanian national who was part of a widespread ATM skimming ring that stole more than $868,000 from banks accounts in New Jersey and two other states has been sentenced to more than five years in federal prison. Bogdan Viorel Rusu, 38, who lived in Queens, New York, received a 65-month sentence Monday from a judge in Springfield, MA, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in that state said. Rusu will have 60 months of supervised release after finishing his prison stint. Judge Mark Mastroianni also ordered Rusu to pay $440,130 in restitution and forfeit the same amount. nj.com
