Walmart vs Amazon - The Worldwide Retail Champion Heavyweight Fight

By Tony D'Onofrio, Global Retail Influencer

Several weeks ago I had the pleasure of participating in a Rethink Retail podcast with Bryan Gildenberg, Chief Knowledge Officer of Retail, Sales & Shopper at WPP's Kantar Consulting and Paul Lewis, CMO of digital transformation agency Valtech. With Julia Raymond moderating, the three of us debated the growth strategies of Amazon and Walmart in their quest for global retail leadership.

The lively discussions included our musings on Amazon's announcement of one-day shipping, the value of the Amazon's Prime program, potential acquisition strategies for growth, and the looming online grocery battles.

This post summarizes additional data insights not discussed in the podcast: tonydonofrio.com

Canada facing same issue as U.S.
Shoplifting & petty-crime cases being "dropped outright"

Across Canada, people accused of petty crimes like shoplifting, minor assault and fraud are walking free - because the justice system doesn't have time to deal with their cases, as it struggles to move more serious crimes through the courts. The president of Canadian Association of Crown Counsel says cases involving less serious crimes are either being dropped outright or shunted into restorative justice programs. He called it a regular occurrence, though specific numbers weren't available.

The Retail Council of Canada is worried about shoplifting cases being dropped. The council represents over 45,000 retail merchants across the country. "It's really concerning for retailers, retailers of all sizes," said Jim Cormier the council's Atlantic director. "The deterrent for theft and shoplifting in stores is, of course, often that there can be legal consequences."

Last year, the retail council estimated that shoplifting accounts for up to $5 billion a year in losses for Canadian retailers. Cormier said shoplifting has an awful impact on retailers, and if it happens enough, it will cut into a company's profits. Stephen O'Keefe, a consultant who helps companies with loss prevention, said it pains him when courts throw out shoplifting cases.

"When you have a company that experiences shrinkage in excess of their net profit, they have to shut their doors. We've experienced that in Canada over past years where we've had major brands, major retailers, who have closed their doors because they can't absorb those shrinkage charges." To recoup some of the costs associated with shoplifting, some retailers are forgoing criminal court altogether and instead are taking their grievances with shoplifters to civil court, said O'Keefe. cbc.ca

Security Industry's Top Themes
"The convergence of physical security and IT" & "Cybersecurity"

SSN News Poll: ISC West 2019's Top Two Themes Were
With the remaining 18 percent saying "partnering and open architectures" was the top theme.

When asked what the most exciting technologies and products were at this year's show, respondents said "AI, machine learning and deep learning," at 53 percent, and "cloud and biometric access solutions," at 42 percent, stole the show, while the remaining 5 percent said "video/cameras and VMS platforms and solutions" grabbed their attention most.

"The integration of IP technology, IT and Physical security now is a fact and those who don't see it will soon become part of history. AI applications are still somewhat fuzzy, but solutions are becoming real and will be a big part of this industry in the future."

"From the perspective of a vendor offering a cloud based toolset for Security Integrators and operating within the world of IP Cameras and VMS, I felt this years ISC show had more knowledgeable buyers that were scanning for solutions with more intentionality." securitysystemsnews.com

Walmart Canada Built Amazon-Go Style 'Fast Lane'

Judge Blocks Shopko Bankruptcy Immunity Plan For Executives
McKesson Claims Fraud Against Shopko Executives

A federal bankruptcy judge on Wednesday denied Shopko's plan to liquidate in bankruptcy and distribute the proceeds among creditors. The judge specifically took aim at liability releases in the plan for company insiders that would protect them from legal action by creditors. "I don't know where this case goes from here," Saladino said. "We'll figure that out I guess as time goes on." Objecting to the plan was pharmaceutical-maker McKesson, a major supplier to Shopko that says it was owed nearly $70 million when the retailer filed for bankruptcy. An attorney for McKesson said Wednesday at trial that the company has what it believes is a fraud claim against Shopko executives under Wisconsin law.

Shopko on Monday announced its plans to liquidate, citing its inability to find a buyer as the reasoning behind the decision, according to a company press release.

Shopko, which is owned by private equity firm Sun Capital, originally declared bankruptcy due to "excess debt and ongoing competitive pressures," according to a statement by the company in January. retaildive.com

Nevada: Governor Sisolak signs two criminal justice reform bills into law
Governor Steve Sisolak signed two criminal justice reform bills into law Wednesday afternoon in Carson City. Assembly Bill 431 restores the right to vote for anyone released from prison after being convicted of a felony. For non-violent offenders, their right to vote would be immediately restored. "When this bill goes into effect on July 1 of this year, some 77,000 Nevadans will immediately have their right to vote restored, because this bill is retroactive to apply to individuals who have served their time, are walking free but still don't have their civil rights restored," Sisolak said.

Along with signing AB431, Governor Sisolak signed Assembly Bill 192. The bill, known as the "Nevada Second Chance Act," would seal the records of anyone convicted of a crime that was later decriminalized. AB192 mainly relates to crimes like marijuana possession. Anyone convicted of marijuana possession before it was decriminalized can now request a court to seal any documents relating to that arrest. The bill aims at making it easier for anyone finding it difficult to get a job because of a criminal conviction that is no longer considered criminal. fox5vegas.com

Michigan Senate proposes law banning facial biometrics use by law enforcement
SB342 was introduced by Sen. Peter Lucido (R), which would impose a broad ban on law enforcement officials obtaining, accessing, or using facial recognition technology, or any information gathered with the technology. The bill defines any such use as a violation of the Fourth Amendment, as well as section 11 or Article I of the state constitution.

Secretary of State's Office said notice procedures for data sharing are being considered. An MSP spokesperson said that facial recognition is never used to positively identify a suspect, and that the new funds would be used to upgrade the six-year-old algorithm for better speed and accuracy.

Industry groups have slammed San Francisco's decision to ban most facial recognition use by law enforcement and government agencies in the city, and a proposed law to require notice of the use of public facial recognition in Washington State failed to reach a vote in the lower state house by the deadline last month. biometricupdate.com

Vaping linked to violence, property theft among teens in US: study
Puffing could be the gateway to delinquency. Teens who vape are more likely to steal and commit violent crimes, according to a new study out of the University of Texas and San Antonio.

The study, published this month in the Journal of Criminal Justice, tracked a national sample of US youths in the 8th and 10th grades - and found that those who vaped were at an elevated risk for committing acts of violence and property theft. (Those who vaped marijuana instead of smoking it were even more at risk for criminal activities, researchers say.) nypost.com

Why Violence Is Up in Pockets of Brooklyn
Over the Memorial Day weekend, one person was killed and 10 were wounded in six separate shootings. And that was just in northern Brooklyn.

Citywide, violent crimes have dropped to record lows. But in some neighborhoods, crime is stubbornly persistent. My colleague Ali Watkins wrote about shootings in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights and other parts of northern Brooklyn, and what the police are doing to stop the violence.

In northern Brooklyn, there have been 11 more shootings so far this year than there were a year ago. Over that same period, northern Queens had 10 additional shootings and northern Manhattan had 16 more.

What is behind the violence?

One answer is access to guns. Though New York City's gun laws are restrictive, other cities and states have looser regulations. For years, law enforcement officials have complained about how guns illegally flow into New York with disturbing regularity.

Another answer is gangs. nytimes.com

Why businesses don’t report cybercrimes to law enforcement
Law enforcement agencies estimate the number of cybercrimes that go unreported by businesses number in the millions. Here why and when you should report breaches and other cyber attacks.

Companies are often compelled to report security incidents such as data breaches to regulators. Companies in the UK, for example, will be legally obligated under GDPR to inform the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) if they suffer a breach involving personal information of customers or employees. Similar obligations exist under the likes of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) in the U.S. or the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) in Canada.

However, no such compulsion exists when it comes to reporting cybercrime to law enforcement, leading to agencies in both the UK and the U.S. warning of a massive gap estimated to be in the millions between the number of actual incidents and reported cyber crimes. Those unreported incidents make it harder to justify allocating resources to cybercrime units, which in turn limits agencies’ abilities to take down cybercriminals.

Why don’t businesses report cybercrimes, and are the reasons behind their reluctance justified?

Law enforcement agencies worldwide are rarely ever sure how many cybercrimes are being committed. In the UK, the gap between the Office of National Statistics’ annual crime survey and the number of crimes reported to Action Fraud, the UK’s national fraud and cybercrime reporting center, has been in the millions over recent years. A 2016 report by Barclays and the Institute of Directors found only 28% of cyberattacks against businesses in the UK were reported to the police. csoonline.com

Impersonation Attacks Up 67% for Corporate Inboxes
Email-based cyberattacks are going up, causing confidence in security defenses to fall as businesses grapple with greater losses caused by email-borne cyberattacks, researchers report.

The majority (94%) of organizations say they were hit with a phishing attack in 2018, researchers found, and 54% noticed an increase in the volume of phishing attacks. Nearly half (45%) reported a rise in targeted spear-phishing emails packing malicious links, and 53% suffered a ransomware attack that directly affected business operations – up 26% from a year ago. Of the ransomware victims, 86% say they experienced at least two days of downtime; three days was the average. darkreading.com

Organizations Must Vet Suppliers for Geopolitical Risks As well as Cyber Risks
Lawmakers are questioning how New York City’s transit authority vets cybersecurity in train equipment after a Chinese state-owned company proposed building new, high-technology subway cars for the city. As WSJ Pro’s Catherine Stupp reports, such developments are causing executives to think about different kinds of risks when they consider doing business with foreign firms. Corporate executives must consider geopolitical relations carefully before signing contracts. cmail20.com

Inside Apple’s top secret testing facilities where iPhone defenses are forged in temperatures of -40C
In a huge room somewhere near Apple’s glistening new campus, highly advanced machines are heating, cooling, pushing, shocking and otherwise abusing chips. Those chips – the silicon that will power the iPhones and other Apple products of the future – are being put through the most grueling and intense work of their young and secretive lives. Throughout the room are hundreds of circuit boards, into which those chips are wired – those hundreds of boards are placed in hundreds of boxes, where these trying processes take place.

Those chips are here to see whether they can withstand whatever assault anyone might try on them when they make their way out into the world. If they succeed here, then they should succeed anywhere; that’s important, because if they fail out in the world then so would Apple. These chips are the great line of defense in a battle that Apple never stops fighting as it tries to keep users’ data private.

It is a battle fought on many fronts: against the governments that want to read users’ personal data; against the hackers who try to break into devices on their behalf; against the other companies who have attacked Apple’s stringent privacy policies. It has meant being taken to task both for failing to give up information the US government says could aid the fighting of terrorism, and for choosing to keep operating in China despite laws that force it to store private data on systems that give the country’s government nearly unlimited access. independent.co.uk

How adding ship from store helped improve Chico’s inventory accuracy
Chico’s overhauled its back-end systems using Manhattan Associates for its buy online pick up in store and ship-from-store capabilities. Stores now fulfill 10% of all online orders, and even more during the holidays, Chico’s said at the Manhattan Momentum conference.

After roughly a year that included a hurricane and renegotiating its shipping carrier contract, the apparel retailer successfully deployed buy online pickup in store and ship-from-store capabilities chain-wide at its 600 Chico’s stores, 400 White House Black Market stores and 300 Soma lingerie stores in Q2 of 2019.

The goal of the project was to become a stronger omnichannel retailer, Marcela Quintana, manager of omnichannel strategy and operations at Chico’s, said at the Manhattan Associates Momentum Conference in Phoenix in May. The retailer had an “old and homegrown” back-end system, she said.

To do that, it first needed to build a foundation. In November 2017, Chico’s embarked on this by enhancing its omnichannel operations. For example, it started allowing shoppers to return online orders to a store and allowed store associates to place an online order for a customer in store, such as when a shopper needed an item in size or color that the store did not have.

However, to implement ship-from-store on a larger scale, the retailer needed to expose its store inventory to its website shoppers, as ecommerce shoppers only could see inventory that was available in its distribution center. This required the retailer to marry its back-end systems. Chico’s already used Manhattan Associates warehouse management and supply chain intelligence services, and it added the vendor’s store inventory management, inventory visibility and store fulfillment services and integrated them into one another. Now, Chico’s has seven ecommerce, retail and back-end software systems—such as its store point-of-sale system and customer service portal—flowing into Manhattan Associate’s order management and store operations systems.

Now that Chico’s has all of these systems flowing through Manhattan, it has one book of record for inventory, instead of four different places. After this, Chico’s says its inventory accuracy increased by 15%. digitalcommerce360.com

What Do Amazon's Star Ratings Really Mean?
On Amazon, like many ecommerce sites, buyers also leave star ratings for items, from one to five. They’re important shorthand, symbolizing at a glance how people felt about a certain item. They also serve as a convenient way to filter, rank, and manage the overwhelming amount of choice that is a hallmark of 21st-century living.

But Amazon’s little yellow luminaries are less straightforward than they appear. Why does one product get 4.7 stars and another get 4.8? I know what you're thinking: Louise, clearly these are just averages—take the total number of stars and divide that by the number of reviews, and there you go. Just simple math! But reader, that is not the case. While Amazon says these stars reflect the “average customer review” of an item, the calculation behind them is more complicated—and mysterious—than that. wired.com

3 charged in string of jewelry store robberies across the western U.S.
Three Chilean nationals were charged Wednesday with committing a string of jewelry store heists across the western United States. The three men are charged in Davis County's 2nd District Court with engaging in a pattern of unlawful activity and criminal mischief, second-degree felonies, and three counts of attempted burglary, a class A misdemeanor. Police in Utah, Arizona, Colorado and California have been working to catch this group.

"Their modus operandi is to cut the power to jewelry stores soon after the stores close for the weekend. They then monitor the police response to the alarm call at the jewelry store. Once the police determine it appears to be a false alarm and leave the area, the group typically waits for the alarm system's battery backup to die before forcing entry into the jewelry store," the charges state. The trio has allegedly broken into jewelry stores by going through the roof, through neighboring businesses, and through windows.

The charges were made in connection with robberies at two Sally's Beauty locations in Spokane and Spokane Valley. Investigators believe Bartley robbed the store and threatened to shoot an employee if she didn't comply with his demands. He then tied her up with a phone cord, took her phone and threatened to kill her if she called police. Prior to his arrest for crimes in Spokane, Bartley was previously convicted of six counts of robbery in King County. khq.com

Sometimes you have to lose in order to win long term. Picking your battles is an art that many never acquire, but those that do are usually two steps ahead of you. So while the loss may seem to set you back, regroup and focus two steps ahead because that's where the winner of the last battle is. And remember always lose with dignity and win with humility.

Just a Thought,
Gus
