Where Will Marvin Ellison - Former LP Executive - Lead Lowe's?
In just over a week, J.C. Penney CEO Marvin Ellison will leave behind the woes
of the struggling department store sector and return to the world of home
improvement. But he'll have his work cut out for him at Lowe's too.
Ellison, who previously served in various executive roles at The Home Depot,
will take the reins as CEO of Lowe's after a lackluster performance in the first
quarter of the year. The home improvement retailer reported Wednesday that sales
in the first quarter rose 3% to $17.4 billion from $16.9 billion in the year-ago
period, with total comparable sales up 0.6% including at stores in Canada and
Mexico. Comps in the U.S. rose 0.5%. Sales through Lowes.com, meanwhile, rose
20%, according to the retailer.

Editor's Note: Joining HD as Vice President of Asset Protection and
rising to EVP in his twelve year tenure was a remarkable feat and for him this
move back into the home improvement industry where he excelled not only makes
sense but its a brilliant move for both parties. As Lowe's has never been able
to beat HD in quarterly results this will be Ellison's biggest challenge and
puts him in a place where he hit home runs for years.
UK's Daily Mail Asks: 'Is Amazon's facial recognition system racist?'
Expert claims AI 'discriminates against black faces'
Amazon's
facial recognition tool is being referred to as a 'recipe for authoritarianism
and disaster' after it was revealed to be used by law enforcement officials.
Now experts say it raises even greater concerns, as the artificial intelligence
used to power the technology could exhibit racial bias.
Many are calling on Amazon to release data that shows they've trained the
software to reduce bias, but it has yet to do so.
The controversy was spurred by a report from the American Civil Liberties Union
(ACLU), which found that Amazon's facial recognition tool, dubbed 'Rekognition',
is being used by law enforcement agencies in Oregon and Florida. The ACLU voiced
concern that Rekognition could be misused to identify and track innocent people
in real-time.
But Amazon said 'quality of life would be much worse' if technologies such as as
this were blocked because of fears they may be misused.

Up To 2.39% Of Retail Sales - Lost To Fraud
39% of worldwide card fraud losses occur in the U.S.
Credit card fraud is occurring across retail, e-commerce, financial services and
lending sectors at an alarming rate. Every $1 of fraud costs organizations in
these industries between $2.48 to $2.82 – that means that fraud costs them more
than roughly 2 1/2 times the actual loss itself. Fraud cost as a percent of
revenues ranges between 1.58% to 2.39%* based on research just published by The
Nilson Report.
Payment card fraud globally has climbed to over $22 Billion in losses. What is
alarming for USA credit card issuers is that the United States has 39% of
worldwide card fraud losses.
SmartMetric has created a powerful biometric fingerprint reader that sits inside
a bank’s credit or debit card. Using the cardholder's fingerprint to unlock and
activate the card as the card user touches the card's surface. In less than a
second the card user’s fingerprint is scanned and then matched with their
fingerprint stored inside the card. Of course if the person trying to use the
card is not the card holder, the card will not work.

School Shooting Survivor Calls For ‘Die-In’ Protest At Publix Supermarkets
Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting survivor turned student activist
David Hogg is calling for a “die-in” at Publix Super Markets on Friday to
protest the chains political donations to a pro-gun Republican gubernatorial
candidate.
Hogg wants his Twitter followers, and there are 800,000 of them, to “die-in” at
Publix stores, which means lie on the ground inside the supermarkets for 12
minutes at 4pm Friday.
Hogg is critical of the Lakeland-based chain due to its donations to Adam
Putnam. The supermarket has donated $670,000 in the past three years. The former
U.S. representative recently described himself as a proud National Rifle
Association supporter and he has a top rating from the group.

Companies Try Nudging Their Way to Better Ethics
Drug maker Eli Lilly & Co. wants its employees to report wrongdoing and bad
behavior. Part of that effort involves encouraging employees to watch videos of
real-life situations in which their colleagues discuss the real-time ethical
choices they made in the course of doing business.
Eli Lilly and other companies are looking to influence how people make decisions
and are using “nudges,” or choice architecture, as a way to promote ethical
behavior among their employees. Nudges are one of the ways businesses are
deploying behavioral ethics to reaffirm their values and to keep employees
focused on questions of ethics and compliance as they engage in their daily
work.
“The idea is to keep this topic in front of people in any way we can,” said Ms.
Barnes. “We know from research that when people have this kind of messaging in
front of them they are more likely to make the right decisions.”

Study: ‘Seamless shopping’ is still a pipe dream
While most consumers expect the ability to shop effortlessly across channels,
only 7% of retailers currently provide a complete unified commerce experience
that allows a customer to “start the sale anywhere, finish the sale
anywhere,” according to the “2018 Customer Experience/Unified Commerce
Survey,” from Boston Retail Partners (BRP).
Knowing that consumers will often stop shopping a brand after just one bad
customer moment, retailers are making big plans to converge digital and physical
retail environments to facilitate a seamless experience across channels going
forward. Within three years, 50% of companies plan to offer a complete unified
commerce experience that allows a customer to start and finish the sale

Retail GDPR Warning
GDPR: We’re Just Getting Started
"Bad Time to Have a Data Breach"
What the CFOs are reading about GDPR
During
the early phase of enforcement, information commissioners in charge of
overseeing GDPR compliance in each country will be looking for flagrant
violations to emphasize the gravity of the rules and make examples of negligent
organizations.
In other words, the next several months would be a particularly bad time to
experience a bad data breach, especially if your organization’s GDPR response is
slow, ineffectual, or incomplete. Editor's Note: Commissioners looking to set
examples.
U.S. businesses that fully commit themselves to
GDPR compliance will be ready for regulations that may emerge in response to
Equifax, Facebook, election interference, and whatever big data scandal comes
next. Even without new regulations, given the current pushback, American
businesses should seriously consider the problem of damaged public trust. They
need to figure out how to maintain and project a reputation for corporate
responsibility.
So what should an organization be doing now that the heat is on?

A Data Protection Officer's Guide to the Post-GDPR
Deadline Reality
The EU's General Data Protection Regulation deadline is here -- now what? These
four tips can help guide your next steps.
1. Think GDPR and beyond. Organizations must build a "privacy-by-design"
approach and ensure their privacy and security programs encompass more than GDPR.
2. Know how to respond to DSARs. One unknown for all of us is the volume
of
data subject access requests (DSARs) that our organizations will be
processing. Data subject rights are detailed in
GDPR articles 12–23.
Under this law, you must provide customers and contacts with an easy way to
exercise their rights.
3. Implement and refine your vendor management program. Another area to
consider is your vendor management program. Be sure you are flowing down your
GDPR obligations to vendors who handle EU citizen data. You do not want to
suffer financial consequences because of a vendor's lack of compliance. It's
also a good idea to document your reviews and follow up with vendors who are
still in process on their journey to establish consistent lines of
communication.
4. Maintain an updated data inventory. Last, but certainly not least, it
is imperative that your organization updates its data inventory and data flows,
and be ready to map new flows as they develop.

According to a new report from BRP, rapidly evolving customer expectations
are driving a major transformation in retail. The
2018 Customer Experience/Unified Commerce Survey combines research on

retailers. As consumers will often stop shopping a brand after just one bad
customer moment, it becomes critical for retailers to make the shopping
experience seamless and frictionless.

About $1.2 billion in cryptocurrency stolen since 2017
Criminals have stolen about $1.2 billion in cryptocurrencies since the beginning
of 2017, as bitcoin’s popularity and the emergence of more than 1,500 digital
tokens have put the spotlight on the unregulated sector, according to estimates
from the Anti-Phishing Working Group released on Thursday.
Of the $1.2 billion, Jevans estimates that only about 20 percent or less has
been recovered, noting that global law enforcement agencies have their hands
full tracking down these criminals.

Americans Get an F on Password Security
Almost half of U.S. consumers use one to five passwords to access all of their
online applications, a survey by The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and
Insurance Company (HSB), part of Munich Re, has found, indicating many use the
same password for different accounts.
As for how Americans store the passcodes they need to access a growing number of
banking, retail, social media and business applications, it’s much more likely
they will use a sticky note than a secured password management app, the study
concludes.

Untangling the worldwide web of
counterfeiting
In response to the increase in counterfeiting, organisations such as
International Trademark Association (INTA) are expanding their
anti-counterfeiting programmes and many governments are improving their
legal, enforcement and judicial processes and mechanisms.
Nevertheless, the problem continues to grow. Why? One reason is that
criminal enterprises increasingly view counterfeiting as a low-risk,
high-reward revenue stream. The involvement of organised crime has raised
the level of sophistication in counterfeiting, enabling counterfeiters to
exploit more unsuspecting consumers into buying their illicit products, the
revenues from which are then used to fund further illegal activities.
Online Counterfeiting
Counterfeiters often sell their goods to unsuspecting consumers under the
guise of legitimate businesses and have discovered that they can easily run
their counterfeiting activity on the Internet. Indeed, criminals prefer to
sell counterfeits on the Internet for many reasons:
● They can hide behind the anonymity of the Internet (on the Dark Web even
their internet protocol addresses can be hidden).
● The Internet gives them the reach to sell to consumers globally, outside
of the national limits of law enforcement.
● Counterfeiters can display genuine goods on their site and ship
counterfeit goods to the consumer.
● When one site is shut down, another one can quickly be opened, making it a
struggle for brand owners to stop a counterfeiter.
● Criminal networks use complex server systems, which allow for hundreds of
websites to sell the same products while making it difficult for law
enforcement to track the counterfeiters.
These tactics have led to a proliferation of online counterfeiting, giving
brand owners and governments the arduous task of finding and shutting down
the counterfeiting rings. While the link between the increased sales of
counterfeits on the Internet and the harm caused to businesses, governments
and the public is certain, the solution is complex and challenging. As a
result, how to address the sale of counterfeits on the Internet has become a
hotly debated topic within industry and among policymakers. Who is
responsible for addressing the problem? What legal, policy and voluntary
measures should be put in place?

A global approach to anti-counterfeiting
The presence of counterfeit goods on the market has a number of consequences
for both legitimate brands and their consumers. While brands are losing
revenue and customer trust and suffering damage to their reputations,
consumers are simultaneously finding themselves out of pocket and saddled
with sub-quality goods. Beyond this, there are also far wider-reaching
consequences, such as health and safety issues – especially as a consequence
of buying medicine, cosmetics and electronics that are fake.
No matter how many enforcements are carried out, how many marketplace sites
and listings are shut down or how many third-party platforms are monitored,
it is never possible to eliminate all instances of infringement. However, it
is not necessarily a losing battle. Instead, it requires a change of focus;
brands must develop and implement a global anti-counterfeiting strategy that
places the consumer at its heart.
Before considering such a strategy, it is important to understand the
environment in which brands are operating and just how counterfeiters are
thriving online.

later updated the condition of the three critically injured patients to
stable.

Tip of the Day
Sponsored
by Vector Security Networks
|
Staying focused - at times the most difficult task of all. With days slipping by
as if no progress at all is made. Feeling guilty as you drive into work and
remembering those you didn't follow up with or call just to check in. Finding
that zone where the day disappears and you've hit all the balls out of the park
is a great feeling and at best only happens two or three times a week. So the
question is: how do you move forward every day of the week and make all of them
highly productive? - A struggle even for the best. Simple - Get focused on the
day at hand. Commit to yourself exactly what you've got to accomplish that
specific day and go do it regardless. And don't allow yourself the luxury of
letting anything stand in your way - unless it's a family emergency. Dedicate
yourself that day to your objectives of that day and that day alone as progress
is measured by small steps and each day you can make a few. You've just got to
commit yourself to making them each and every morning.
Just a Thought,
Gus
