Q1 2018 Job Postings Decline 14%
Without Sears New Jobs in Q1 '17 - Job Postings Only Declined 2.8%
Yes we're in a bad job market - but it could
get worse if March is any indicator
In
Q1 '17 Sears Holdings created
200 new Area IRT (Interdictive Response Team) AP jobs and eliminated 700 AP
positions in the field. Sears posted 160 of those new jobs on the
internet. Obviously inflating that quarters results.
However they were new positions and as such must be included and makes
March '18's 39% decline explainable.
Even without Sears 160 job postings last March, March postings this year
declined 19.8%. Which may be an indicator if the decline continues into
Q2.
Take Sears out of the totals and we only see a 2.8% job postings decline
in Q1.
So in essence while we've seen some drastic activity in job cuts and senior
level job eliminations the industry overall is still maintaining new job
postings and not reflecting a bad LP/AP job market yet. However, as stated
above, if the March 19.8% (without Sears) decline continues we will be in a
very bad job market rather quickly.
Additionally, this past February 2018, the
retail sector cut over 6,000 jobs; 60% higher than the same time last
year.
With bankruptcies piling up, more store closings coming and predicted,
retail automation rising, robots on the sales floor, scan-n-go, self-serve
checkouts, mobile pay, kiosks replacing cashiers in the fast-food industry,
and more Amazon Go's on the horizon worldwide it's predicted that automation
alone puts
30-50% of the world's retail industry jobs at risk. All of these factors
obviously, also contributed to Q1's 14% decline.

Amazon has finished visiting the top 20 contenders for its new HQ
Some cities are already seeing a 'halo effect'
Amazon has completed the process of visiting all 20 cities that are finalists in
the e-commerce giant's search for a second headquarters, sources close to the
process told NBC News on Wednesday.
Regardless of who wins the golden ticket, several cities in the top 20 have
already noted that simply making it onto Amazon's final list has led to an
uptick in interest from other companies.
Newark, Philadelphia, and Austin all reported a surge in economic development
inquiries since the HQ2 Top 20 List was
released from Amazon in January. Development officials cite the publicity
surrounding Amazon’s search for a new space as creating buzz around their
communities.

Macy's thinks it has a 'winning formula' as it crushes in Q1
Macy's Q1 comp's up 3.9%, net sales up 3.6%. Net income nearly doubled, to $139
million in Q1 from $78 million in the year-ago period. The company's stock rose
nearly 10% in premarket trading as Macy's blew away many estimates.
Macy's Chairman and CEO Jeff Gennette said in a statement Wednesday that the
retailer performed well across all three of its nameplates: Macy's,
Bloomingdale's and Bluemercury.
Macy's turnaround efforts appear to be bearing fruit as they continue into 2018.

Walmart drops mobile Scan & Go checkout
Expanding BOPIS to 2,000 Stores
Walmart ended its Scan & Go service that let customers pay for items while they
browsed stores and skip the checkout line, the retailer
confirmed to Business Insider. Shoppers could use a mobile app on their
smartphone or handheld scanners provided inside stores at about 150 U.S.
locations.
Walmart said it would use insights from Scan & Go to support other tests like
Check Out With Me, a service announced in April that gives employees mobile
point-of-sale devices that can ring up items and provide a receipt on the spot.
Walmart is finding it harder than it may have originally anticipated to convince
customers to adopt new tech and engage with the retailer through digital and
mobile platforms.
The checkout service that has seen the greatest traction among Walmart customers
so far is its grocery pickup. Shoppers can still avoid checkout lines by
ordering items online and picking them up at stores where an employee will load
them into their car. Walmart is
expanding this service to more than 2,000 stores this year to ramp up
convenience.

Cybersecurity Whistleblowers Are Growing
Corporate Challenge
Signals from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission over how seriously it
takes cybersecurity, combined with a Supreme Court ruling on whistleblower
protections, are putting pressure on companies to be more careful about how they
deal with potential tipsters, lawyers say.
The securities regulator issued guidance in February on how companies should
handle cybersecurity issues.
“It’s going to incentivize people inside an organization to step forward and
disclose,” said Brian Mahany, a whistleblower lawyer and founder of Mahany Law
LLC. “I think the SEC is saying to companies, ‘We’re taking this seriously. You
take it seriously.’”
“I definitely think this is a growth issue,” for companies, said Dallas Hammer,
an attorney at Zuckerman Law who represents employees in whistleblower matters.
“We’re getting [inquiries] about this every week.”
To ease the path for workers to raise concerns internally, companies should open
multiple channels for reporting, Mr. Keating said. Another step would be to
train managers to know part of their job is to to recognize and deal with
whistleblowers’ concerns, and to evaluate them on how good they are at handling
complaints.

Organizations Embracing Europe's GDPR as
Opportunity to Improve Privacy & Security
A new study from IBM reveals that nearly 60 percent of organizations surveyed
are embracing the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as an opportunity to
improve privacy, security, data management or as catalyst for new business
models, rather than simply a compliance issue or impediment.
To reduce their exposure,
the study indicated that the majority of companies are being more selective
in the data they collect and manage, with 70 percent disposing of data ahead of
the deadline for compliance.
Companies' preparation for GDPR comes in the wake of increased scrutiny from
consumers on businesses' management of personal data. A
separate poll of 10,000 consumers, conducted by the Harris Poll on behalf of
IBM, found that only 20 percent of U.S. consumers completely trust
organizations they interact with to maintain the privacy of their data.
● 84 percent believe that proof of GDPR compliance will be seen as a positive
differentiator to the public
● 76 percent said that GDPR will enable more trusted relationships with data
subjects that will create new business opportunities
● Despite this opportunity, only 36 percent believe they will be fully compliant
with GDPR by the May 25 deadline
"GDPR will be one of the biggest disruptive forces impacting business
models across industries – and its reach extends far beyond the EU borders,"
said Cindy Compert, CTO, Data Security & Privacy, IBM Security. "The onset of
GDPR also comes during a time of huge distrust among consumers toward businesses
ability to protect their personal data. These factors together have created a
perfect storm for companies to rethink their approach to data responsibility and
begin to restore the trust needed in today's data-driven economy."

100 Percent of Organizations have Active Insider Threats, Research Shows
Dtex Systems, a leader in user behavior intelligence and insider threat
detection, today announced availability of its
2018 Insider Threat Intelligence Report. Findings are based on threat
assessments from global organizations in public and private sector industries.
Dtex found active insider threats in all assessed organizations. This is clear
proof that no businesses have been able to eliminate the insider threat blind
spot. Failure to gain visibility is allowing malicious and negligent
employees to engage in undetected high-risk activities on every endpoint, on and
off the network. Malicious employees are users that intentionally harm their
organizations through theft, sabotage, and blatant disregard for security
policies and controls. Negligent employees are often times trusted users that
hurt their organizations due to a lack of awareness, error, or because they are
not defended against attacks.

Credential theft a top priority, Rapid 7 report shows
Credential theft is still a top priority for organisations to address in terms
of making it more difficult for cyber attackers to gain unauthorized access to
their networks, report reveals.
Credential theft, reuse and subsequent suspicious logins are the most commonly
reported significant incidents across both small and large organizations, the
report said.
Data shows that adversaries attempted to steal credentials from employees at
larger organizations at nearly three times the rate of smaller organizations,
but much of that is likely due to the number of employees available to target,
the report said.

Circle K grassroots CPTED initiative growing, reducing crime
Sales up $65K per year, violence down in stores with murals
A grassroots CPTED (crime prevention through environmental design) initiative to
help reduce crime in convenience stores is in growth mode, thanks in part to
interest from some major academic institutions.
Sean
Sportun, manager of security and loss prevention, started a project to paint
murals on Mac’s convenience stores more than five years ago to help spur
community support and reduce the incidence of violent crime in stores.
The murals were hugely successful; Sportun was recognized for his creative
approach by his employers and also by Canadian Security magazine, which awarded
him Security Director of the Year in 2013.
What soon developed was an academic project, partially funded by a Harvard
University grant and a case study published by Harvard Business School with a
detailed background on the Mac’s organization (now known as Circle K after a
rebranding exercise) focused on the mural project.
The project needed to be scaled up to increase its impact and create more data
points that could be used for further research. It wasn’t a tough sell to Mac’s
management. Not only was crime going down but sales were going up $65,000 a
year in the stores that had murals painted on their exterior walls.

Legalization of cannabis a groundswell of opportunity for security providers
"This is a huge business opportunity," says David Hyde, when asked how the
upcoming legalization of recreational cannabis under The Cannabis Act will
impact the security business.
Hyde, owner and principal consultant at David Hyde and Associates, a risk
management and security services consultancy based in Toronto, is not alone in
this belief. Even prior to legalization, companies and consultants have seen
opportunities to expand their business under the ACMPR, or the Access to
Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulation.
Expanding growth opportunities
Despite the difficulties of entering a new, somewhat “unconventional” industry,
there is plenty of evidence to indicate the cannabis market will provide
opportunities for growth.
“Within a six-month span, we have grown from just under 20 staff to more than
100 Canada-wide, and we project that we will exceed 200 by the fall of this
year," says the owner of 3Sixty Secure.
Retail = revenue
For security service providers looking to enter the market, Hyde says he
believes there are plenty of new opportunities. Today, there are 90
cultivation sites that are federally regulated, he says, and this will
grow to 150 by mid-summer. Each of these sites will need security systems
and guards.
Regulatory gaps
Part of doing your homework includes being aware of regulatory gaps that
impact security, particularly transportation security. In fact, under the
ACMPR, there are no regulations regarding the transportation of medical
cannabis. As a result, the industry, particularly providers of secure
transportation services, are setting their own security standards.
Holistic security
To capitalize on the cannabis market, not only is it important to be aware of
regulatory gaps, but also of the strict physical security regulations under the
ACMPR. The ACMPR focuses on barriers, doors, gates, ceilings and other
aspects of the physical security of cannabis facilities. It is also focused on
technological security and systems, including cameras, access control,
intrusion, and more, explains Hyde.

Halifax startup making waves in facial recognition
RetailDeep, the Halifax startup that used to be known as Skyline, is currently
in the running for some big prizes and was shortlisted to the Top 20 at the XRC
Labs innovation accelerator in New York City.
RetailDeep equips stores with facial-recognition software that identifies
customers who have digital accounts and tracks what they select from
shelves. It automatically bills them for each item before they leave the shop.
The system allows small and medium-sized retailers to compete with automated
shops being pioneered by such corporate giants as Amazon. It lets
consumers purchase things without waiting in line for a cashier and also helps
retailers track data on their customers.
The company, which started in Shanghai, China, is expanding its eight-store
pilot with Chinese retailer Pocket Noir to include 100 locations across China.
It is also piloting locally, testing its AI at the Halifax Seaport Farmers’
Market and several other businesses in the city.

Whack-A-Mole: Inside The Fight Against Knockoffs,
Counterfeits & Fake Sites
Manufacturers with patents have long been subject to intellectual property
theft, which is now a cornerstone of the ongoing trade war with China. Culprits
that mimic a company’s technologies or designs are able to sell knockoffs and
counterfeits more cheaply to price-conscious consumers by using inferior
materials and taking advantage of lower shipping costs.
Because of these practices and the piles of money to be made, fake products pour
into the U.S. from overseas daily. And while it’s difficult to say how much
money U.S. manufacturers are losing in the process, the amount of bogus goods
entering the country, most notably from China, is staggering, according to
Patrick Hedren, vice president, labor, legal & regulatory policy, National
Association of Manufacturers.
Add to this scenario schemers claiming to sell a company’s products via websites
that look legitimate but instead take consumers’ money and don’t deliver the
goods, and it’s easy to see that businesses are battling a host of nefarious
entities out to steal their money and sully their reputation.
There is only so much a company can do to mitigate—prevention is
difficult—counterfeits, knockoffs and scam websites that tarnish their brand and
financial standing. In-house or outside legal counsel is one way. Filing patents
on intellectual property in a timely fashion is another.
Trade associations’ regulatory or international trade committees can keep you
apprised of steps to take and current lobbying efforts being undertaken, such as
how to best prevent intellectual property theft.
More than anything, vigilance is critical. Monitor sites like Amazon and Alibaba
for potential counterfeits and knockoffs. Work with retailers and distributors
on what they’re seeing and what could be a potential threat.

CNP Expo Keynote Recap: Striking a Balance
between UX and Fraud Prevention
How do merchants resolve the natural tension between enabling a frictionless
online purchasing experience and effective fraud prevention? According to
Discover Global Head of Product, Jamie Uppenberg at a Tuesday morning keynote
address at CNP Expo, in the current commerce environment, digital experience is
the most important thing and “if you don’t know what your most important
customers consider to be the most important thing, you won’t have much to manage
soon enough.”
Risk necessarily complicates that management, but Uppenberg noted that any
attention to fraud has to begin with first principles.
“When you start thinking about protecting
the digital experience, you have to ask a few questions,” she said. “You have to
first understand how much you want to impact your customers. And then, begin to
layer in what your risk parameters are and your budgeting. You have to start
there and you have to know before you start looking at services.”

Denver, CO: ORC Ringleader targeting Home
Improvement stores pleads guilty; expected sentence of 16 years
The ringleader of a plan that resulted in the theft of over $35,000 of
merchandise from Denver metro area and Front Range home improvement stores
pleaded guilty last Friday, according to the Denver District Attorney.
Christopher Rodriguez, 31, pleaded guilty to the main charge of violation of the
Colorado Organized Crime Control Act. As part of the terms of his plea,
Rodriguez is expected to be sentenced to 16 years in prison. The indictment
alleges that between December 2015 and December 2016, Rodriguez participated in
and directed fellow members to steal merchandise from Home Depot and Lowe’s
stores, then return the stolen items back to the stores for merchandise credit
cards, which were in turn sold for cash to pay conspirators in the crime in cash
or drugs.
A Denver Grand Jury last October indicted Rodriguez and 24 co-defendants on
various additional charges, including money laundering, theft, and violation of
bail bond conditions. The DA said the indictment was the result of a months-long
investigation and collaboration by the local Economic Crime Unit, Denver Metro
Gang Task Force, Denver Police Department, Aurora Police Department, and the
Lakewood Police Department.

Update: Rhode Island: Man pleads guilty in
Target, CVS rooftop robbery case
An Albanian man living in New York pleaded guilty in a Rhode Island federal
court to cutting his way through a Target department store roof last October,
prying open an ATM and stealing more than $14,000. Epirot Krasniqi of Brooklyn
appeared before a U.S. District Court judge Friday and pleaded guilty to larceny
charges and burglary of controlled substances. Krasniqi went on to cut through a
wall of the store into a CVS pharmacy, where he stole a prescription package of
Oxycodone from a locked cabinet. Liridon Gashi allegedly helped him with the
break-in. The two were equipped with portable two-way radios. Police responded
to a tripped burglary alarm, and found the men hiding inside air conditioning
units on the roof. After a federal indictment was issued in November, Krasniqi
was arrested by FBI agents in New York. Gashi was arrested by FBI agents in San
Francisco in March. Krasniqi will be sentenced in August. No plea agreement was
filed for this case.

Leadership Tips: "Quiet"
Leadership Matters, Hold on Tight and Practice
Quiet Leadership is Still Leadership (and Matters
More than You Think)
It's often easier to notice big leadership behaviors rather than the quieter
forms of leading, but these small acts of leadership, are just as influential
and can matter more than you think. Here's why.
Lead by example
Leadership is a Habit that Requires Practice
While certain qualities of a leader may be genetic, much of what it takes to be
a great leader can be learned. How? By turning skills into habits a person can
really acquire what it takes to be an effective leader.
All you need to do is practice
The Reality and Rewards of Leadership
No matter how many articles you read on leadership, it's not as simple as
following other people's routines. Leadership is messy, with no clear-cut path
to success. You will be tested, deal with failure and feel vulnerable, but you
will also get through it with resilience.
Don't quit
What Racing the Ironman Can Teach You About
Leadership
The Ironman triathlon tests a person's endurance, athletic ability and their
determination. But it also can provide some important lessons on leadership that
are not only beneficial to you as a leader, but also to your organization.
Effort over talent |

Tip of the Day
Sponsored
by Vector Security Networks
|
Preparing for an interview should be exhaustive. However, the day of the
interview you should clear your head and not do any prep at all or look at any
notes other than the well thought out prepared questions you've come up with. A
clear mind performs better than one that's cluttered and trying to remember
everything. And all the prep you've done should be well stored in your mind.
Have faith in it and try to relax the day of the interview and work out if you
can before it. The mind body connection is a powerful thing and your brain
cannot operate at 100% if your body isn't there with it.
Just a Thought,
Gus
