The U.S. Crime Surge
The Retail Impact
Lawmakers Must Pass Federal ORC Bill
Op-Ed: The stats are alarming - Congress must act to curb retail crime
Almost
70 percent of storefronts have reported an increase in theft this past
year, and the Coalition of Law Enforcement and Retail estimates that organized
retail crime accounts for
$45 billion in annual retail losses.
But
what makes this current organized retail crime wave more pervasive and
problematic than ever is where these stolen goods may end up once they are
swiped from store shelves. Gone are the days of pawning stolen merchandise on
street corners and flea markets; criminals are turning to the anonymity of
the internet to peddle their loot. Stolen items are showing up on the
virtual marketplaces that consumers traffic on a daily basis, seamlessly fitting
in with honest online storefronts and businesses.
It has become increasingly taxing for law enforcement units to keep up with the
surge of organized retail crime endangering retail employees and consumers
alike. Staffing shortages, budget cuts, and a sweeping rise in violent crime —
which the
FBI estimates to have jumped 5.6 percent in 2020 — are all to blame. There
are simply not enough resources for these precincts to additionally
allocate to monitoring the vast entirety of the internet.
That’s why federal legislation such as the Integrity, Notification, and
Fairness in Online Retail Marketplaces for Consumers, or INFORM Consumers Act (H.R.
5502), could be a valuable and essential tool. It’s the least Congress
can do to support law enforcement online as they continue to work to combat
organized retail crime. The bill requires online marketplaces to clearly
disclose contact information of certain high-volume, third-party sellers to
consumers and provide consumers with ways to report suspicious marketplace
activity. The Federal Trade Commission and state attorneys general would have
authority to enforce the requirements.
This means that passing the INFORM Consumers Act would empower online
marketplaces to become better partners in tracking and identifying retail theft
rings by building a more transparent and accountable online ecosystem that
benefits retailers, consumers and law enforcement alike. The bill has gained
support from
law enforcement.
The bottom line is that the rise in organized retail crime is a national
issue that must be met with a national solution. Local police departments
simply don’t have the time or resources to wait for the inconsistent variety of
state legislative attempts to curb criminal activity.

Retail Body Cams to Thwart Crime & Abuse
Target, Woolies Employees To Wear Bodycams To Tackle Customer Abuse
Australian retail employees, including Target and Woolworths, have reportedly
started trialling body cameras in selected stores in a bid to protect
themselves from abusive customers.
Signage
at one Target store in Queensland said the cams worn by staff were “to keep
our team and community safe”.
“These cameras will be worn by selected team members and turned on only in
the event of an escalating situation where they feel there is a threat to
their safety,” the sign said.
Head of the National Retail Association Dominique Lamb
told the ABC that body cameras worn by retailers were becoming increasing
more common, particularly noting spikes in retail crime
throughout the pandemic.
“Predominantly, it is major retailers that are implementing technologies like
this, mainly because obviously there’s a certain amount of cost involved,”
she said, citing CCTV cameras and other deterrents.
“More and more, what we’re seeing is aggression towards retail workers …
we know there has been quite a spike around the use of weapons in retail crime
and now it’s very much about keeping retail workers safe.”
She added there was no excuse as to why anyone should face this kind of
behaviour. Staff wearing the body cameras will advise customers if and when
the device is turned on.

Chicago's All Out Effort to Reduce Crime
Private security hired to patrol Chicago neighborhoods amid increase in crime
Private security in Chicago neighborhoods is becoming the norm, all in an
effort to cut down on crime. Private patrols can already be found monitoring
neighborhoods like Bucktown, Lincoln Park and Lake View.
Now, they may soon be seen in the West Loop. It's the latest neighborhood coming
together in hopes to hire private security. While an official contract is still
in the works, patrols could begin in the neighborhood within the next few
weeks.
The private company being hired by neighborhood associations throughout the city
to tackle the job is P4 Security Solutions. The company makes it clear that
their officers are not working as first responders, and cannot make arrests
— rather, they are extra sets of eyes for the communities they patrol.
"Our job is really to observe, report, and deter – and doing it in real time
and communicating that with the police department," said P4 Security
Solutions Executive Vice President Steve Vitale. "We feel like we’re an extra
set of eyes and ears and it’s a real big force multiplier."
In Bucktown, business owners like Jim Higgins, who opened Club Lucky in
1990, feel that private patrols will only help prevent crimes from happening
– before they start.

The Return of Mandates?
With COVID surging, cities, agencies mulling a return of health mandates
As the Bay Area braces for yet another COVID-19 surge, a few cities and
agencies are reinstating indoor mask mandates as the region continues
debating the worth of a patchwork of coronavirus-related health orders.
Since late March, California’s case rate has nearly tripled and the Bay Area
— which historically experienced a lower case rate than the rest of the state —
has emerged as a COVID hotspot. Though cases are still one-tenth of what they
were during January’s omicron surge, the region has
more than three times as many positive cases than it did six weeks after the
winter surge. That trend started in San Francisco around mid-March, followed by
Santa Clara, San Mateo and a little later the other counties.
The uptick, driven by the emergence of two omicron subvariants that according to
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now account for most of the cases
nationally, have prompted some cities such as San Jose to revisit lifted
mandates. Others continue to wait and see, reluctant to change the rules
again for a public tiring of mixed messages.

The COVID Era Debate Over Remote Work
Remote Work - Good for Productivity?
No, working from home doesn't harm productivity, says study
Worker productivity and company resilience
can be improved by remote working, particularly during a disaster.
A study comparing productivity before, during and after an extended stint of
remote work suggests information worker productivity isn't negatively impacted
by remote working. The research – which looked at data about employee technology
use before, during and after the disaster – found that employee and company
resiliency "may be enhanced" through remote work during natural disasters
and other events that cause workplace displacement.
"Almost all of the study's employees were right back up to the same level of
output as they were doing before Hurricane Harvey. This is a huge message right
now for employers because we're having national debates about whether or not
employees should be able to work remotely or in a hybrid schedule."
Indeed, American tech giants, other firms and the federal government are
carving out return-to-office policies largely around the idea of hybrid work,
mostly where staff work three days in the office and two days from home.

Employers are Leaving it Up to Workers
Workers are returning to the office — and finding it has its charms
Forget
all the chatter about employees never wanting to go back to the office again.
According to Jim Clifton, CEO of pollster
Gallup, the
majority of workers want to return at least some of the time. The reason? To
collaborate, socialize and make important decisions alongside co-workers.
That’s also the conclusion of the CEOs of the companies we reached out to when
we asked them about their return-to-office plans. The big differentiator?
Most are leaving the choice about how and when they want to come to work up to
their employees.
When chief people officer Loreal Torres surveyed the staffers at Vested about
returning to the workplace, she got an answer not commonly heard in the news. “Seventy
to 80% said they’d prefer to come in,” she said, adding that they wanted the
freedom to come and go as they please. For this financial marketing and
communications agency, it meant rethinking their setup.

Retail Pharmacy Chains Will Pay Over Role in
Opioid Crisis
Judge to Decide How Much Pharmacies Owe Over Opioid Crisis
A hearing will begin Tuesday in federal court in
Cleveland that will result in a judge determining how much CVSHealth, Walgreens
Co. and Walmart Corp. should pay two northeast Ohio counties to help them ease
the continuing opioid crisis.
How much money should CVS, Walgreens and Walmart pharmacies pay two
Ohio
counties in damages to help them ease the effects of the opioid crisis?
That's
the question in front of a federal judge in Cleveland, who will begin hearing
testimony on Tuesday after a jury found the three giant pharmacy chains
responsible last fall for recklessly distributing massive amounts of pain pills
in Lake and Trumbull counties. It was the first time pharmacies in the U.S. have
been held responsible for the opioid crisis.
Plaintiff's attorneys said before trial that each county needs about $1
billion to repair the damage caused by the flood of pills, which caused
hundreds of overdose deaths.
Around 80 million prescription painkillers were dispensed in Trumbull County
between 2012 and 2016 — 400 for every county resident — while 61 million
pills were dispensed in Lake County during that five-year period — 265 pills
for every resident.
Back in November, a jury in U.S. District Judge Dan Polster’s courtroom sided
with the counties and agreed that the way the
pharmacies dispensed pain medication played an outsized role in creating a
public nuisance. So far, drug makers, distributors and pharmacies
have agreed to settlements totaling well over $40 billion, according to an
Associated Press tally.
Pharmacy chain Rite-Aid settled with the counties in early October before
the start of trial. Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle reached a settlement with
the counties in late October after the trial started.

Banned from Selling Facial Recognition
Database
Clearview AI agrees to not sell facial recognition database to private companies
Controversial
facial recognition company Clearview AI has agreed to a ban that will
prohibit it from selling its facial recognition database of more than 20 billion
individuals to private companies.
The ACLU brought the lawsuit against Clearview AI in 2020 on behalf of a
number of groups representing vulnerable communities, including undocumented
immigrants and survivors of domestic violence. The lawsuit accused Clearview
AI of repeatedly violating a 2008 Illinois law, which
prevents organizations from using residents’ biometric identifiers without
their knowledge and permission.
The settlement between Clearview AI and the ACLU prevents the company from
selling access to its database to any entity in Illinois, including state
and local police, for five years. Private companies will still be able to
purchase Clearview’s facial recognition algorithm without the database.
The ACLU urged more states to pass protections similar to the ones in Illinois.
Clearview AI also agreed to end its practice of
offering free trial accounts to individual police officers — including
federal law enforcement — without the knowledge or approval of their employers.
The use of such trials has made it difficult for agencies to track which
employees are using the product,
according to a government watchdog report last year.
Federal government agencies and other states will be able to purchase facial
recognition technology. Despite growing concerns from civil rights experts
and lawmakers, federal law enforcement agencies
have only ramped up purchasing of Clearview AI and other facial recognition
technologies in recent months.
Privacy and civil liberties advocates are hailing the settlement as a major
victory and say now is the time for Congress to act to pass a national
privacy law. Congressional efforts to pass federal privacy legislation,
including legislation that would secure Americans’ biometric data,
have floundered in recent years. Even with the
encouragement of the White House and numerous proposals, legislation has yet
to reach a vote.

Will the Retail Apocalypse Return?
New Wave of Retail Bankruptcies Could Be Coming
As a result of mounting consumer debt and the expiration of government stimulus
credits, consumers may be forced to cut back on discretionary spending in order
to meet their debt obligations. In addition, as inflation continues to erode
pay, consumers may pivot to discount options, forcing retailers to make
difficult decisions in this new environment, including reverting to various
forms of discounting measures in order to fight for market share.
Moreover,
despite the creation of a record number of jobs in 2021, retailers have
struggled to find employees for their stores or warehouses. While these
staffing shortages have caused distribution, inventory, and operational problems
for retailers of all sizes, smaller retailers have struggled disproportionately
with their ability to combat labor issues, supply chain disruptions,
manufacturer preferences, and inflation when compared to larger retailers.
Despite the low number of retail bankruptcy filings in the second half of 2021
and the first quarter of 2022, a number of struggling drug stores, apparel
retailers, and department stores have announced efforts to right-size and close
stores. In fact, last month, Rite Aid announced the results of its fiscal
fourth quarter earnings and reported that it plans to generate $170 million in
cost savings during the next fiscal year through, among other things, the
closing of 145 unprofitable stores.Rite Aid also received a FRISK Score of 1
from CreditRiskMonitor, the lowest score available indicating the highest risk
for bankruptcy. At the end of 2021, CVS also announced its plans to close 300
stores per year between 2022 and 2024 as part of a shift to e-commerce. In
the apparel space, American Eagle announced its plans to close 225 stores.
While bankruptcy filings continue to remain low, the combination of
continuing inflation, rising interest rates, supply-chain disruptions, labor
issues, consumer debt and spending, and the expiration of government assistance,
may create another wave of distress and bankruptcy. Retailers, landlords,
manufacturers, vendors, and lenders should remain nimble and consider
alternatives to be prepared for the changing economic climate and its impact on
consumer spending habits and retail operations across the sector.

Retailers Rationing Baby Formula
‘Please Help’: A Nationwide Baby Formula Shortage Worsens
After Abbott Nutrition issued voluntary
recalls of its popular baby formulas, retailers have limited purchases, leaving
desperate parents searching for solutions.
Parents
across the country are struggling to keep up with a nationwide shortage of
baby formula — a problem worsened by a recent recall by Abbott Nutrition, a
manufacturer of baby food. The recall came after at least four babies were
hospitalized with bacterial infections and two died after consuming its
products, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said.
Now, several major retailers eager to preserve inventory are limiting how
much baby formula their customers can buy.
The drugstore chain CVS said in a statement that “following supplier
challenges and increased customer demand,” buyers will be limited to three baby
formula products per purchase in stores and online. Walgreens echoed that
in a statement, saying it had also imposed a three-item limit in an attempt “to
help improve inventory.” Target said it had a four-item limit online but no
in-store limits. Costco had various caps on formulas listed on its
website.

Checkpoint Systems: Helping shape the future of retail
at Retail Risk – London 2022
Protecting retailers from high levels of waste, brazen attempts of extreme
shoplifting and cutting plastic use. These are among the three big challenges
Checkpoint Systems – a global leader in source to shopper solutions – will take
on at this year’s Retail Risk in London this May.
Reducing food waste with RFID
Returning
on 19 May, the first challenge being tackled by
Checkpoint Systems
at Retail Risk is food waste. Managing sell-by dates on perishable goods
requires retailers to have a total view of their inventory at any given time.
Here, inventory accuracy not only ensures brand owners can have a complete view
of all merchandise and its location within the supply chain, but reduce lost
sales and improve efficiency.
Using Checkpoint’s RfreshID® fresh food solution, retailers can accurately
monitor inventory levels and rotate stock efficiency as produce with near or
exceeded expiry dates can be identified with ease. With live demonstrations
running throughout the day, attendees at Retail Risk can see first-hand how the
solution enables retailers to manage inventory and precisely plan when
replenishments are required, as well as when stock needs to be marked down for
sale.
Protect high-value merchandise on-shelf
Checkpoint will also demonstrate its innovative and technologically advanced
solutions that have been engineered to deter high-volume theft seen in recent
cases of extreme shoplifting. Products such as the TRPDOR™ Anti-sweep hook
and Glide system – a simple yet effective solution designed to deter
high-value and high-volume theft – will be on display. The solution slows any
attempts by shoplifters to clear shelf contents in a matter of seconds. In
addition, it is customer friendly and instinctive to use, making it easy for
honest customers to access products for sale.
Its unique and revolutionary design ensures honest customers can still gain
direct and easy access to the front item on display. Furthermore, it acts as a
permanent label holder, with two strategically positioned back strikers, which
prevents all other product stock on the hook from being removed all at once.
Attendees at this year’s event will be invited to test out the effectiveness of
this on-shelf deterrent and see for themselves why many retailers have already
adopted the anti-sweep hook.
Security without barriers
Another solution being deloyed by Checkpoint is the affordable plug and play
retail security system that works on proximity, Chirp Zone. The solution
creates a wireless zone that will confine security tags to an allocated area. If
a tagged item is removed from this zone, an audible alarm within the tag is
triggered. It covers a radius of up to 5m per ‘hub’ and is ideal for a wide
range of retail formats including concession stores, kiosks and even outside
events where traditional physical antennas are not applicable.

Retail Data Breach
Ikea Canada Breach Exposes 95K Customer Records
An unauthorized employee accessed Ikea's
customer database, but it's unclear what the intention was.
Ikea Canada has confirmed that an employee compromised a database of 95,000
Canadian customers.
The
employee performed unsanctioned searches of the database between March 1 and 3,
Kristin Newbigging, public relations leader at Ikea Canada, explains to Dark
Reading. She adds that no banking information was exposed during the
unauthorized system access.
However,
personally identifiable information was compromised, according to reports.
That includes customer names, email addresses, phone numbers, and postal
codes, along with
IKEA Family loyalty program numbers in some cases.
"We have proactively notified the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada
about this incident, as well as any applicable customers," Newbigging adds. "We
have also reviewed and updated internal processes to prevent such incidents in
the future."
The company said there is no action required by Ikea customers, and that
the company took "steps to prevent the data from being used, stored, or shared
with any third parties."

The Evolving Role of the CISO
Security leaders chart new post-CISO career paths
The evolution and growing prominence of the
CISO role gives holders more options on where to go next in their careers.
A range of security experts say it’s becoming more common to see the CISO
role as a way station to other jobs. Of course, many security experts still
aspire to move up the enterprise security team ranks to
become CISO and then
move into CISO roles in increasingly larger or more complex organizations. But
longtime security leaders and others in the field say a growing number of
CISOs are deciding to seek a wider array of follow-on roles.
“The career path for security professionals is changing,” says Matt Aiello, a
partner with executive search firm Heidrick & Struggles and leader of its global
cybersecurity practice. “CISO is still going to be an endpoint [in the
careers] for many, for some it will be a beginning of a different pathway.”
Heidrick & Struggles delved into this dynamic in its
2021 Global Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) Survey. It notes
that the CISO is “relatively new in the context of other C-suite roles”
(many sources date the role to the mid-1990s with the first titleholder being
Steve Katz) and as a result “CISO career progression remains tricky.”
CISOs themselves, however, have some pathways mapped out:
●
47% of survey respondents said they want to become board members;
●
44%, chief security officers (a role that includes physical as well as
information security);
●
18%, entrepreneurs/consultants;
●
16%, chief risk officers;
●
12%, CIOs;
●
8%, private equity officers;
●
3%, CEOs; and
●
2%, developers of new tools at a security firm.
Some 5% said “other,” while 3% said they preferred not to answer. Only 9% wanted
to retire.
Speaking to those findings, the study authors concluded that “the wide range of
next roles CISOs are interested in highlights that this is an evolving role,
one where the next move isn’t clear.”

Beefing Up Cybersecurity Services
Microsoft launches cybersecurity services to help clients fight off ransomware
and other attacks
Microsoft is beefing up its security
services offerings to go along with its technology products.
Microsoft’s security business is growing faster than any of its main products,
and now the company is adding heft to its offerings with three new services
designed to help organizations spot and respond to cybersecurity incidents.
Microsoft is among the leaders in cloud software and infrastructure, which means
its technology is already the backbone for many businesses of all sizes.
That puts the company in position to not only make security software available
to its client base, but also offer consulting-oriented services in a market
where demand far exceeds supply.
The investment comes as organizations
ramp up their security spending to manage the increased threats of
ransomware attacks and network hacks. Last year, Microsoft and other
technology companies pledged to help fill about 500,000 cybersecurity jobs
in the U.S., and Microsoft CEO
Satya Nadella
said annual research
and development spending in cybersecurity would jump to $4 billion from $1
billion.
Security already represents a $15 billion annual business for Microsoft,
and in 2021 it increased
faster than any other significant product or service the company sold.

Fighting E-Commerce Fraud With Multifactor
Authentication
How Online Retailer Jane Is Keeping Fraud Out of Fast Fashion
An increased digital presence means increased digital fraud. Each customer
shopping online represents a potential entry point for a bad actor to steal
customers' or corporates' data or funds. eTailers are pulling out all the
stops to keep this fraud to a minimum, with several digital identity
protocols to verify that customers are who they say they are. One of the most
effective ways to prevent identity fraud for eCommerce marketplaces is
multifactor authentication (MFA), which works by requiring more than one
identifying detail when logging in or making a purchase.
This method can be unpopular among companies and consumers, however. Studies
have found that many consumers
decline this extra step if it is optional or will even patronize a different
eTailer if they face too much friction at the checkout. Studies also found that
using MFA can
prevent more than 99.9% of attacks that rely on stolen credentials.
However, the savings involved in preventing data breaches, fraudulent purchases
and lost customer loyalty could more than make up for any customer hesitancy. It
will be up to each business and consumer if the convenience sacrifice is worth
it.
Around the Alternative Payments Space
Two-factor authentication, which consists of users logging into online
services with a password and a code sent via SMS, has been proven to be an
effective deterrent to fraud. Still, most companies opt out of its use. A
recent
study found that just 37% of companies require it for their customers, as
well as 31% of charities. Its exact usage rate varies by field, with two-thirds
of businesses in information and communications mandating it versus just one in
five food and hospitality businesses.
Jane on Protecting Retail Customer Data With Digital
Identity Verification
At the forefront of fraud prevention are the eCommerce marketplaces. They need
to be to protect the treasure trove of data they host, data that bad actors work
tirelessly to get their hands on. Robust digital identity tools are the lynchpin
to ensuring that this data is kept safe and secure.
In this month’s Feature Story, PYMNTS talked with Mark Spencer, senior vice
president of commercial operations for fast-fashion retailer
Jane, about how the company
deploys MFA for its cybersecurity.
How eCommerce Marketplaces Can Leverage Digital
Identity Protocols to Prevent Fraud
ECommerce fraud is quickly becoming a growing problem, with bad actors

adopting digital identity protocols can mitigate eCommerce fraud steal
customers’ data, corporate funds and goods daily. eTailers are scrambling to
protect themselves and their customers from fraud, leveraging digital identity
protocols like MFA to do so.
This month’s PYMNTS Intelligence explores the nature of eCommerce fraud in
recent years and how techniques like MFA have their ups and downs when keeping
businesses and customers safe.

How MFA Helps Retailers Fight Fraud
One recent study showed that more than 17% of all eCommerce transactions
during the 2021 holiday shopping season were fraudulent, a 25% increase from the
rest of the year. This rise represented just a fraction of global fraud
trends during the past several years, with the increase in online shopping
resulting in more entry points for fraud, including identity fraud.
Among the most effective ways of combating identity fraud is multifactor
authentication (MFA), which works by requiring customers to input more than
one identifying detail when logging in or making a purchase. The rule of thumb
for effective MFA is to provide verification by “something you know, something
you have and something you are. (For example, a password, an SMS code sent to
customers, and a biometric identifier.)
Most MFA systems require two of these factors, with studies showing they can
prevent more than 99.9% of the attacks that rely on stolen credentials.

Video of Best Buy Staff's NFL Defense to Stop Thieves Sparks Jokes, Memes
Best
Buy employees who teamed up to stop a gang of robbers leaving the store have
been praised for their extraordinary NFL-style defense after security camera
footage of the incident went viral. As three would-be crooks ripped phones out
from a display table, seven quick-thinking workers ran past them before forming

tackle the thieves when they made a run for it. A clip of the incident was
captured on the store's CCTV camera and was later set to music. It was tweeted
by @NFL_Memes with the caption: "This Best Buy has a better defense than your

Phoenix, AZ: Man in critical condition after police shooting at Chili’s
Restaurant
A
man is in critical condition after a shooting involving Phoenix police in north
Phoenix Monday evening. Phoenix police said around 4:30 p.m., officers were
called to 7th Street and Bell Road after witnesses reported seeing a man
throwing rocks and bottles at cars and businesses nearby. Police said when
officers arrived on scene, they located a man matching the suspect's
description. When they attempted to make contact with the man, they noticed he
had a river rock in his hand. Officers gave the man commands to drop the rock,
but police said he ignored their commands and took off on foot. Police said
officers chased him across the street to the parking lot of a Chili's
restaurant. Authorities said the man continued to ignore officers' commands to
drop the rock and an officer shot the man as he tried to enter the restaurant.
The man fell into the restaurant and officers were able to go into the business
and take him into custody, said Phoenix Police Sergeant Philip Krynsky. Police
said officers rendered first aid to the man before he was transported to the
hospital to be treated. No officers or civilians were hurt, police said.

Oakland, CA: Pregnant store owner scares off would-be thief with Air Horn
A
pregnant store owner in California recently fought back against a would-be
thief, and it was caught on camera. The woman said she’s grateful for a piece of
safety equipment that helped her fend off the suspect in Oakland’s Chinatown.
Eva Liu remembers the details of what happened inside her international shipping
store April 25 like it was yesterday. At around 1:50 in the afternoon,
surveillance video shows the man walk toward a pile of packages seemingly with
the intention of taking them. That’s when Liu yelled out. Liu, who is seven
months pregnant, fearlessly grabs an air horn from off her desk and runs after
the man. The sound scared the suspect away and also alerted the nearby
volunteer security team, The Blue Angels, who flagged down Oakland police.
Thousands of air horns like the one Liu used were distributed through Oakland’s
Chinatown in February 2021 thanks in part to generous donors and the Oakland
Chinatown Chamber of Commerce.

Auburn, CA: Man suspected of using counterfeit money at Home Depot
An
observant Home Depot loss prevention officer helped catch a Sacramento man,
suspected of using counterfeit money, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said.
“Our dispatch center received a call from Home Depot’s loss prevention. And loss
prevention had stated they witnessed a male passing off several counterfeit
hundred dollar bills,” said Angela Musallam, with the sheriff’s office.
Investigators said the man used $500 in counterfeit bills to purchase various
items. After searching his car, they found more $100 bills along with several
grams of methamphetamine, investigators said. That incident two weeks ago wasn’t
the first time Home Depot in Auburn was hit with counterfeit bills. Back in
March, deputies arrested a couple for using hundreds of dollars of fake money to
buy items during several trips in and out of the store. Deputies said the couple
committed the same crime in several stores across Placer County.

Fort Wayne, IN: Man arrested in string of arsons around Fort Wayne
Police have arrested a 35-year-old man they say is responsible for several
recent arsons in the Fort Wayne area. On April 29, police say a man entered the
vestibule area of the Bud Meeks Justice Center and started pouring lighter fluid
on something inside before setting it on fire and taking off. A few days later,
the Fort Wayne Fire Department (FWFD) says a man lit a bag of charcoal on
fire at the Southgate Kroger and again fled the scene. Probable cause
documents released on Monday say Brad Fair II was responsible for those two
fires, as well as fires at two other businesses. On May 2, they say Fair
walked into the Subway on West Rudisill and used an “unknown heat source” to
damage the walls of the bathroom and ignited the trashcan inside.

Seems like the longer a process goes, the harder it is for everyone to stay
focused on the initial purpose and maintain the enthusiasm as when it began.
Time and difficulty have their impact, but maintaining the passion and
enthusiasm is up to each person. With the last step seemingly the easiest, it is
usually the most critical step of all and many tend to approach it as if it is a
mere formality when, in reality, that last step can be the biggest and, if you
do not watch out, it could be a step right off the cliff.
