Sensormatic Global Shrink Index
New Shrink Study from Tyco Retail Solutions Reveals the Products and
Brands Most Likely to be Stolen from Stores
Shrink costs U.S. retailers a staggering $42.49 billion in 2015.
That’s according to the 2018 “Sensormatic Global Shrink Index” from Tyco Retail
Solutions, which found that the most likely to be stolen from U.S. stores
included clothing, cosmetics, jewelry and confectionery, as well as consumer
electronics. The brands targeted the most included Guess, Gap, Revlon, Apple
(and Beats), Samsung and Sony.
U.S. fashion and accessories stores had the highest rate of shrink by retail
vertical, the survey found. Office equipment stores had the lowest.
Tyco commissioned global retail market intelligence provider PlanetRetail RNG to
conduct the report, which included over 1,100 retailers across 14 countries
representing the world’s leading economies and 13 vertical markets. They operate
over 229,000 stores. On a global scale, shrink cost retailers nearly $100
billion globally last year.
Shrinkage was highest in the U.S. at 1.85%, of sales during 2017, while Europe
(1.83%) ranked second.
Key U.S. findings include:
● External theft/shoplifting (including organized retail crime) make up the most
significant percentage of losses, at 35.55% of lost sales, slightly above the
global average. Internal shrinkage (24.54%), including employee theft, was the
second largest source of losses, followed by vendor and supplier losses
(21.47%).
● The average value of each ORC incident in the USA during 2017-2018 was
$1,401.68 (or $131.72 more than the global average). Other external incidents,
including shoplifting, amounted to $89.80 (or $16.86 more that the global
average) compared to all other countries surveyed. Internal sources, including
employee theft, were worth $12.75 more in the USA, at $71.75, compared to the
rest of the world.
● After electronic article surveillance (EAS), alarm monitoring is the next most
popular loss prevention investment, followed by access control systems,
exception-based reporting and closed-circuit television (CCTV).
● The country ranked fifth for overall shrink, but has the highest shrink
dollars based on being the world’s largest economy.
“Best in class retailers are optimizing their physical stores by ensuring that
operational controls are in place for growing problems such as retail shrink,”
said Catherine Walsh, VP and general manager, Tyco Retail Solutions. “The
Sensormatic Global Shrink Index benchmarks retailer performance globally and
sheds light on other factors affecting loss prevention.

Rite Aid AP Doubles Case-Closure Rate with Captis Intellience's Solveacrime.com
The New Science of Criminal Apprehension and Prevention
There’s no doubt that there is more video surveillance data in existence today
than ever before and camera installations are on the rise. The more cameras
there are in businesses and municipalities monitoring and recording activities,
the greater the chances of apprehending and prosecuting criminals.
But the vast amount of video surveillance footage available is taxing security
and law enforcement officials as the information collected requires viewing and
investigation to determine identities. Ninety percent of the time, law
enforcement officials do not have the time to identify the criminals captured on
video as they dedicate their time to the most serious offenses. And while
getting the video in front of a large audience is helpful, the chances of having
a video of any one crime, such as retail robbery or theft broadcast on the local
news, are slim given the vast number of cases reported every day.
However,
there is a new science of crime solving and prevention that dramatically
improves how new video surveillance technologies are applied to identify and
apprehend criminals – and reduce crime.
Captis Intelligence’s
Criminal Apprehension and Prevention platform provides a cloud-based solution
that employs crowdsourcing and advanced analytics to effectively help identify
and apprehend suspects and deter future incidents from occurring.
The platform is built on four primary application pillars: Intelligence,
Information, Identification and Investigation.
The four “I’s” combine to unify and expand situational awareness, collect
geographic crime intelligence, conduct social media investigations, poll
criminal databases, implement crowdsourcing intelligence gathering, and exchange
information with members and law enforcement agencies.
One of Captis Intelligence’s most notable accounts is the pharmacy chain giant,
Rite Aid. In the fall of 2017, a man entered a Rite Aid location, jumped over
the counter, took cash from the register and then fled before police arrived. A
few days later a woman who lives in the area saw a surveillance feed with a
familiar looking face on social media. She filled out a tip form on Captis
Intelligence’s
Solveacrime.com crowdsourcing website (which is free for the public to view),
and the subject was apprehended shortly after. Tips like this solicited through
Solveacrime.com have more than doubled Rite Aid’s case-closure rate.
According to Robert Oberosler, VP of Asset Protection at Rite Aid, “We’re
now closing more than 50 percent of our violent crimes within a week of using
Solveacrime.com. It is one of the most interesting and successful crime
resolution tools that I have ever used over my 40 years of experience.
Solveacrime.com helps Rite Aid solve more crimes, and provides a powerful
deterrent by letting criminals know that Rite Aid is actively using
crowdsourcing to identify and help apprehend criminals.”

Bloomingdale’s AP Uses Employee 'Machine Learning' to Reduce Safety Incidents
Bloomingdale’s can now pinpoint which of its employee learning programs are
generating results - and by how much in real dollars. The Macy’s division has
deployed Axonify Impact, (from
Axonify), a learning attribution engine that uses machine learning to
evaluate the data collected through training programs. Results reveal the direct
impact that employee training programs are having on real business metrics, such
as increases in revenue or decreases in expenditures.
At Bloomingdale’s, the platform has played a large role in helping reduce
safety incidents. The platform automatically ties the retailer’s training
efforts to how well it is reducing its overall safety claims. Bloomingdale’s has
attributed about one third of this safety claim reduction to training efforts on
the platform, which translated to a savings of $3 million in one year.
“At Bloomingdale’s, we’re always digging deeper into the effectiveness of our
training programs and content to understand exactly how they impact business
results,” said Chad McIntosh, VP of asset protection and risk management of
Bloomingdale’s. “For most companies, making these connections is incredibly
difficult and time-consuming.”

How Walmart is Helping Prosecutors Pursue 10-Year Sentences for Shoplifting
Walmart’s trespass notifications are part of the extension of private influence
over parts of the criminal justice system that benefit third parties, like
retailers. Walmart, in particular, has come
under fire in the past for hiring too few employees (a cost-cutting
measure), and then relying heavily on publicly funded local police to handle
their shoplifting problem. I have
previously written about Walmart’s “restorative justice” program, a private
anti-shoplifting program in California that a Superior Court judge found to
amount to illegal extortion. Around 2008, according to testimony from Lawson’s
preliminary hearing, Walmart began implementing the trespass system, which
allows them to keep records on who has shoplifted before.

Nike Misconduct Exodus Continues
4 More Top Execs Leave - Now Totaling 10
A sweeping investigation into workplace behavior at Nike has resulted in the
departure of four more top-level executives, raising to 10 the number of senior
managers to leave the company as it continues to overhaul its upper ranks amid
widespread allegations of harassment and discrimination against female
employees.
Together, the departing executives oversee some of the most important business
categories and highest-profile departments at the world’s largest sports
footwear and apparel company.
The four additional people who have either left the company already or will
depart soon, Nike confirmed on Tuesday are Steve Lesnard, the head of running in
North America; Helen Kim, who oversaw Eastern North America; Simon Pestridge, a
head of marketing for the performance categories; and Tommy Kain, Nike’s
director of sports marketing.
In a companywide address last week, Mark Parker, Nike’s chief executive,
apologized to employees and said that departures related to the company’s broad
investigation into workplace behavior would be completed by this week. nytimes.com

What the CFO's are Reading
Think There’s a Talent Shortage Now? Just Wait
There’s no shortage of people; skills are what’s missing
There’s already a global talent shortage, but nothing like what will emerge over
the next decades-plus, according to the report. The ever-widening gap between
employers' needs and workers' skills could drive massive lost financial
opportunities over the next decade-plus.
Businesses generally spend little time worrying about what might happen 10 or
more years ahead. But if “what might happen” is a talent shortage so massive as
to cause a wholesale, global reinvention of work norms and redistribution of
labor, perhaps companies could muster up a smidgeon of concern.
The United States would by far take the biggest economic hit, losing out
on $1.7 trillion in unrealized revenue - 21% of the world’s total - as a result
of the talent deficit 12 years from now. The $1.7 trillion would equate to
roughly 6% of the entire U.S. economy.
By 2030 - no more than a couple of economic cycles away, in all likelihood - the
worldwide
talent shortage will reach about 85 million people with needed skills,
according to
a new report. The estimated financial impact: as much as $8.5 trillion of
unrealized annual revenue.
“As a result,” it continues, “organizations may be prompted to relocate their
headquarters and operational centers to places where the talent supply is more
plentiful.
In the report’s view of the future, successful organizations will move from a
paternalistic approach to a more mature, flexible relationship with their
people, “based on mutual respect.”

Spotlight on Southern Imperial, a siffron company
|
Protect High-Theft Products without Decreasing Sales
When combating shrink, it’s important for retailers to pursue common-sense
solutions in their stores. Many loss prevention products in the market today
keep merchandise under lock and key (closed system), which can decrease sales by
as much as 38 percent. Also, many loss prevention products are limited in
functionality. This is where Southern Imperial’s patented SONR System comes into
play.
The
SONR System, an Intelligent Loss Prevention solution, uses an open system
design to draw associate attention to activity while allowing shoppers to remove
and replace product without assistance from store personnel. Moreover, the SONR
System is a multi-tiered security solution that allows retailers to control the
level of security for individual products and situations.
Its basic level of security starts with the SONR Hook and Echo Box. Merchandise
removed from the hook, by raising the attached label holder, triggers the
initial response. Once raised, a warning beep is emitted to alert store
personnel that there is activity in the area. The Echo Box, which is installed
up to fifteen to twenty feet away, will mimic all warning beeps on the floor to
alert store associates to the activity. For the second tier of security, the
Echo Box can also be set to alarm if the SONR Hook is lifted for too long or
cycled too often in a short time span. Finally, for retailers requiring an
additional tier of security, the SONR System can link into existing security and
communication systems to suit store needs.
Placing merchandise behind lock and key can have as dramatic of an impact on
sales as product theft. The SONR System provides retailers with a viable
solution for displaying valuable items without losing them to shrink. It keeps
product visible, accessible, and most importantly, shoppable.
To see how it works, check out the video:
For more information on the SONR system and how it works,

What Employers Need to Know About the Dark Web
Employers and their IT professionals need to be aware of the risks associated
with the Dark Web. An employee who accesses the Dark Web via a company
network can immediately open the network up to risks, including access by
hackers. This could lead to a cyber-attack against the company.
The average Internet user may be largely unaware that there are actually
different levels of the Internet. First, there is the surface level where
companies post their webpages, and where employees may browse the news, shopping
options and Facebook. The surface level is indexed, and can be accessed using a
search engine such as Google.
There is also the Deep Web, which means that the web pages cannot be accessed by
a search engine because they are not indexed. In other words, you would
not be able to search for or stumble upon these websites. Instead, you'd only be
able to access them if you knew their exact web address. What may surprise
people is that most of the Internet today is actually considered part of the
Deep Web.
Next, there is the Dark Web, whose very name sounds a bit ominous. The Dark Web
is a part of the Deep Web, but it also requires special browsers, such as TOR,
and configurations in order to access it. The primary goal of the Dark Web is to
maintain privacy and anonymity. While some may use this area for perfectly
legitimate purposes, such as a journalist speaking to a source in private, not
surprisingly, this setting can also be exploited for illegal purposes, such as
drug and human trafficking and child pornography.
Some sources on the Dark Web actively try to recruit
"insiders" at various companies to use their employment to legitimately gain
access to company information, which could then be misused or released to
others. Insiders could also be used to more easily install malware into an
organization's perimeter security, which could then be used for purposes such as
crashing the system, or stealing information like credit card or Social Security
numbers. While many IT security programs today focus on outside threats, more
and more companies are discovering the importance of increasing protections
against insider threats for this very reason.
IT and security personnel must continue to adapt to threats posed by the Dark
Web and insider activity. Monitoring for suspicious activity such as
downloading specific browsers, investing in insider threat protection, and
educating your workforce about the risks and penalties with accessing company
information for nefarious purposes can help limit the likelihood that the
Dark Web will create havoc in your own work environment.

US Extradites Romanian Hackers in $18M Voice/Text Messaging Phishing Scheme
A pair of Romanian men face charges in the US after netting $18 million in a
vishing and smishing scheme targeting US citizens. Teodor Laurentiu Costea and
Robert Codrut Dumitrescu have been extradited from Romania to the US and have
been charged with wire fraud conspiracy, wire fraud, computer fraud and abuse,
and aggravated identity theft.
The extradition comes after a federal grand jury returned a 31-count
indictment against the pair. A third co-defendant in the case, Cosmin
Draghici, remains in Romanian custody while awaiting extradition.
According to US Attorney Byung J. "BJay" Pak, the defendants targeted US
citizens from their base in Romania, using US-based telephones to initiate phone
calls to others for the purpose of fraud. The pair were engaged in vishing,
which communicates a phishing message through a voice recording, and smishing,
which phishes via text messages.

Why is reducing cyber attacker dwell time important, and how should it be
tackled?
Imagine a burglar having the run of a house safe in the knowledge the owner is
on holiday for a week and the alarm isn’t working; they are far more likely to
explore the property in depth to pick off the most valuable items.
IT system breaches should be viewed in the same context. The longer it takes
to detect an attack, the worse the consequences, whether that means larger
amounts of confidential data being compromised, more funds stolen, or greater
havoc being wreaked on the enterprise infrastructure – and potentially the
systems of partners, suppliers and customers being infiltrated.
In addition, the damage to an organisation’s reputation as a result of the hack
will be longer-lasting and more business critical. This is why it is crucial to
reduce intruder dwell time.
Start with good basic security. Fundamental security controls, such as regular
patching and security updates, two-factor authentication for system logins and
restricting administration access make it more difficult for a prospective
hacker to access the system, increasing the likelihood that they will look
elsewhere for an easier target.
Hardening servers, for example using encryption, authentication and firewalls,
applies more rigid security layers and makes them less vulnerable to attacks. It
also reduces the chance of a kill chain, whereby a series of events is initiated
that results in the organisation’s infrastructure being fatally compromised.
Other preventative measures that help to stop casual attacks, include defence
mechanisms specifically designed to identify undesirable behaviour early and
with greater reliability. These include on-access scans that, by automatically
scanning every time a new system connection occurs, quickly detect malware or
other undesirable connections.

Online Fraud Soared 30% In 2017, Double The Rate Of E-commerce Sales
According to U.S. Census Bureau data, eCommerce sales climbed to a record high
of $453.5 billion in 2017, representing a 16% increase over the previous year.
However, recent Experian reports revealed that online shopping fraud rose 30%
year over year, and 63% of businesses acknowledge they are experiencing the same
or more fraud than a year ago. Chargebacks911, a leading dispute mitigation
and loss prevention firm, warns that rising card-not-present (CNP) fraud could
offset revenue gains unless merchants take proactive steps to identify, prevent
and control it.
Though the U.S. transition to EMV technology has helped reduce point-of-sale
(POS) card fraud, CNP fraud has continued to escalate. Javelin Strategy &
Research projected that POS losses would decline from $6 billion to just under
$5 billion between 2014 and 2018, while CNP losses were expected to almost
double over the same period—from $10 billion to nearly $19 billion. Another
Javelin study found that identity fraud claimed a record 16.7 million victims in
2017, with CNP fraud proving to be 81% more likely than POS fraud.
Meanwhile, Experian’s research reflected the challenges merchants face in trying
to manage that fraud: 72% of businesses cite fraud as a growing concern,
71% admit to denying more transactions than they should, and 84% believe the
need for fraud risk mitigation could be reduced if they were certain of
customers’ identity. Merchants are also getting mixed messages from consumers:
66% of shoppers favor security protocols for online transactions because it
makes them feel protected, yet 35% say they would transact more online if there
were fewer security hurdles—and 1 in 4 has abandoned a transaction because
creating a new account required too much information.

Inside The Ecosystem That Fuels Amazon’s Fake Review Problem
Being a five-star product is crucial to selling inventory at scale in Amazon’s
intensely competitive marketplace — so crucial that merchants are willing to pay
thousands of people to review their products positively. In October 2016, Amazon
banned free items or steep discounts in exchange for reviews facilitated by
third parties.
Amazon’s ban didn’t stop sellers from recruiting reviewers. It only drove the
practice underground. Reviewers are no longer simply incentivized with free
stuff — they’re commissioned specifically for a five-star rating in exchange for
cash. The bad reviews are harder to spot, too: They don’t contain any
disclosures (because incentivized reviews are banned, and a disclosure would
indicate that the review violates Amazon’s terms). Paid reviewers also typically
pay for products with their own credit cards on their own Amazon accounts, with
which they have spent at least $50, all to meet the criteria for a “verified
purchase,” so their reviews are marked as such.

crash around 12:30 p.m. in the parking lot at the shopping plaza near Colonial
Drive and Bumby Avenue when Loss Prevention from the Marshalls store told them
about a crime in progress. The four suspects were trying to get away when two
Orlando police officers encountered them, Mina said. Both officers fired at the
vehicle that may have been driving at them, Mina said. The driver was struck by
police gunfire and continued to drive away, leaving the shopping center.

Lead Your Team with
Modesty, Empowerment and Confidence
Making Friends at Work Is the Key to Successful
Leadership
When leaders prioritize human interactions, people skills and making sure their
team is a part of each success, nothing is impossible. Leaders who are truly
great understand that respect and these four traits make a solid team and
successful organization.
Don't keep score
In Building Your Team There Is a Huge Difference
Between Good, Better, and Best
Whether you're building a new team, or just finding people to join an already
existing one, finding the right people is a challenge. Finding the best in class
gives you an advantage, but finding and hiring the right team doesn't happen
overnight. Here's ways you can shortcut the process.
OK isn't good enough
7 Ways Modest Leadership Increases Team Success
When we imagine what traits make up a successful leader we typically think of
strong, visionary and enthusiastic people. There's one important trait that gets
often overlooked in great leaders, but it's critical to drive high quality
performance and keep your team together.
Modesty
brings optimism
5 Brilliant Things Leaders Do To Inspire Employee
Loyalty

their work. That means 85% of employees have commitment issues and aren't
enthused in their work. If you want to turn the numbers around and inspire
commitment, here's how you can prove to your team you're invested in them.

Sending and delivering the LP message in stores and at the corporate office is
probably one of the most critical things one can do everyday. How you
communicate and how you deliver your message will determine how they respond and
react. If you expect to improve performance and influence change in the stores,
then you've got to communicate in their words and their terms. Each company has
a message, a mission, and core values and your message should fit all of them
and be an extension of them and not an addition to them. This breeds integration
and results in inclusion - all of which are important elements of a successful
executive.
Just a Thought,
Gus
