Nedap applies for global patent for new Virtual Shielding
technology
Nedap
announces that the patent application is pending in over 120 countries for !D
Cloud’s latest functionality: Virtual Shielding. This smart allocation
technology in the Nedap !D Cloud software platform, allows store staff to easily
read RFID tags by using RFID handheld devices and automatically determine the
actual (sub) location within a store of RFID tags in an accurate way. This
solves the problem of reading RFID tags through walls. The industry has long
denied the feasibility of reliably determining individual tag locations without
physical shielding however, Nedap has cracked the code on this. nedap.com

Report indicates facial biometric accuracy
improving but image quality could help further
A team of researchers from the Florida Institute of Technology and the
University of Notre Dame have found generally higher false-match rates (FMR) but
lower false non-match rates (FNMR) for images of African-Americans processed by
facial biometric systems, but also that image quality may be a greater factor
than the balance of quantity between different demographics.
For the report, “Characterizing
the Variability in Face Recognition Accuracy Relative to Race,” (PDF) the
researchers studied the results of two unnamed commercial off-the-shelf (COTS)
matchers, and two convolutional neural network (CNN) -based matchers, VGG and
ResNet. The results with the “COTS-A” and VGG matchers were consistent with
previous studies that have found facial recognition is sometimes
less accurate for matching women and people with dark skin. The newer
“COTS-B” and ResNet matchers showed results even more accurate for
African-Americans than for Caucasians.
IBM
launched a new dataset specifically to help advance the industry’s
understanding of diversity in facial biometrics earlier this year.

Marijuana Use Up Among Workers; Opioid Use Down
Some Retailers Stopped Testing For Marijuana
More U.S. workers are testing positive for marijuana while the number testing
positive for opioids continues to decline, according to the annual Quest
Diagnostics Drug Testing Index.
Based on an analysis of nine million drug tests conducted in 2018, Quest
determined that 5.1 percent of the general workforce tested positive for drugs
and another 2.7 percent of workers in safety-sensitive positions regulated by
federal law did so. Those in safety-sensitive jobs include pilots; rail, bus and
truck drivers; and workers in nuclear power plants.
The combined data from the general and safety-sensitive workforce demographics
show that, overall, 4.4 percent of the U.S. workforce had positive drug screens
in 2018, the highest such rate since 2004 but a far cry from Quest's first
drug-testing analysis in 1988, when the drug positivity rate was 13.6 percent.
The 2018 data show a continuing trend of increased marijuana use among workers:
The number of workers and job applicants who tested positive for marijuana
climbed 10 percent last year to 2.3 percent.
In the general U.S. workforce, the positivity rate for opiates (mostly codeine
and morphine) in urine drug testing declined nearly 21 percent in 2018 to 0.31
percent, the largest drop in three years.
"Our analysis shows that marijuana is not only present in our workforce, but use
continues to increase," said Barry Sample, senior director of science and
technology at Quest Diagnostics. "As marijuana policy changes and employers
consider strategies to protect their employees, customers and general public,
employers should weigh the risks that drug use, including marijuana, poses to
their business."
Rethinking Zero Tolerance
Some employers have stopped screening for marijuana among job candidates, Sample
said.
"You watch what's going on in society ... and you say, 'We've got to adjust,'"
said Marc Cannon, a spokesman for AutoNation, the largest U.S. car retailer.
The company stopped screening for marijuana three years ago. "A lot of great
candidates were failing the test," Cannon
told the Los Angeles Times. "There are people who drink and are great
workers, but they don't do it on the job. Marijuana is just like alcohol."
In 2014, Target stopped across-the-board screening and instead began
focusing only on safety-sensitive positions such as security guards and
warehouse machinery operators. Kroger, a Cincinnati-based grocery store
chain narrowed its drug screens to just one-fifth of its job candidates,
including managers and pharmacy workers.

Growing Nationwide Crime Trend
How America's Drive-Thrus Serve Robbers, Drug Dealers and Other Criminals
A customer helps himself to $860 cash and checks from the drive-thru register by
sending an employee away from the unclosed window to break a large-denomination
bill.
This McDonald’s cash grab in Coolidge, Arizona, is just one example of many
drive-thru deviances happening throughout the United States and Canada. From
money-grubbing fugitives, soused or snoozing drivers idling behind the wheel in
line, to all sorts of riff-raff menacing workers, customers or armed security
guards — they’re hitting drive-thru windows at food chains and banks as a price
of convenience.
“The drive-thru can be favorable to somebody with unfavorable intentions,” Kevin
Trimble, president and founder of Loss Prevention Solutions, Inc, an industry
expert with almost 30 years experience and formerly the U.S. Director of
Security for the McDonald’s Corporation.
Drive-thrus at banks and fast-food joints are meant to be in-and-out, but that
ease of use can help hoodlums make cleaner getaways.
“They have access to the freeway or interstate, multiple egress and ingress
which check the boxes that a criminal uses to commit a crime,” Roberts
explained, adding they’re fairly low risk yet low return.
“This is a nationwide problem.”

UK's Retail Giant Sainsbury Launches First Ever Till-Free
Supermarket
The local convenience outlet at Holborn Circus has been refurbished for the
three-month trial, and the checkout area and the bank of tills at the front of
the shop have been removed.
You can still pay by card and cash, but you will have to use a helpdesk manned
by a single member of staff – so it’s probably not the best idea.
Other supermarkets, including Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, the Co-op and Tesco have
launched or trialed apps that allow shoppers to pay via a mobile phone – but
Sainsbury’s is the first to remove traditional checkouts.
This is an experiment rather than a new format for us – it hasn’t been done in
the UK before and we’re really excited to understand how our customers respond
to the app experience.

Credit Card Compromise Up 212% as Hackers Eye
Financial Sector
Financial services firms saw upticks in credential leaks and credit card
compromise as cybercriminals go where the money is.
More than one-quarter of all malware attacks target the financial services
sector, which has seen dramatic spikes in credential theft, compromised
credit cards, and malicious mobile apps as cybercriminals seek new ways to
generate illicit profits.
The first quarter of 2019 saw a 212% year-over-year spike in compromised credit
cards, 129% surge in credential leaks, and 102% growth in malicious financial
mobile apps.
In January 2019, roughly 2.2 billion usernames and passwords were leaked on
the Dark Web in an incident dubbed "Collections #1-5," named for the
relatively bland file names containing the data. Researchers saw a major
increase in leaked credentials during this time frame – credential leaks in the
first quarter of 2019 nearly doubled those of any of the previous four quarters.
Credential theft is a pervasive and dangerous threat in financial services,
Accenture researchers note in a
new report on industry threats. In 2018, more than 43,000 breaches across
industries involved the use of customer credentials stolen from botnet-infected
clients. Credential theft is a rapidly growing threat to enterprise networks,
especially if cybercriminals gain access to the username and password of a
privileged employee. With this level of access, they don't need malware to
achieve their goals.
Cybercriminals primarily use compromised credit card numbers to make small
purchases, a tactic they can use to evade detection while generating nearly
10 times more "free money" than what the card is worth on the Dark Web. Credit
card companies usually reimburse people affected by card fraud; as a result,
cybercriminals see potentially big gains and little risk.

Incident Responders and Law Enforcement Promise Firewall With GDPR Watchdog
Nearly one year after the EU's new privacy law came into effect, Britain's
National Cyber Security Center continues to assist data breach victims. Its
mission is to help organizations understand what happened and mitigate the

Law enforcement and intelligence officials say they don't want breach victims to
worry about sanctions, but instead immediately seek advice.
"We absolutely see our key priority as helping the victim mitigate and get back
on their feet," Adrian Searle, head of incident response for NCSC, said.

Security Think Tank: Focus on malicious use of AI
in 2019
In 2018, many artificial intelligence (AI) experts, along with the University of
Cambridge and University of Oxford, collaborated on an important paper entitled
The
malicious use of artificial intelligence: forecasting, prevention and mitigation.
Outlining potential dangers for AI and its malicious use, the paper calls for
policy makers and technical researchers to collaborate closely to investigate,
prevent and mitigate potential malicious misuse of AI.
Given the speed with which AI is progressing, this action should occur in 2019,
but probably will not, due to the difficulties of getting policy makers and
technical researchers to engage in such a fashion. Such a delay will increase
the risk of AI being successfully misused for malicious purposes.

The FBI Successfully Pursuing BEC Crimes
Miami Man Admits to Laundering More than $1.5 M to $3.5M in Proceeds from
Business Email Compromise Schemes
Alfredo Veloso, 43, of Miami, today admitted to opening bank accounts,
and to recruiting others to open bank accounts, as a conduit for stolen funds in
connection with a wide-ranging international money laundering operation for
business email compromise and other cyber-schemes.
As stated in court records, a related cyberattack aspect of the scheme involved
the creation, by co-conspirators, of email addresses that mimicked, but
differed slightly from, legitimate email addresses of supervisory employees at
various companies. The conspirators used these deceptive email addresses to
send emails that appeared to be requests for payment of legitimate invoices or
debts owed by the victims. The victims were deceived into transferring funds by
wire into the bank accounts opened by the money mules and controlled by Veloso
and the co-conspirators.
Veloso admitted that he recruited more than eight individuals to participate as
mules in the money laundering scheme, many of whom were women he met through his
kink pornography/adult film business. Veloso and his mules laundered between
$1.5 to $3.5 million dollars.

appear to have mastered balance— to those that don’t, we see statistically
significant differences that mark the former as leaders.

Alibaba Pays $250 Million to Settle Counterfeiting Warning
Lawsuit
Hide Regulatory Warning Before Going Public
The lawsuit accused the e-commerce giant of concealing a regulatory warning
about its ability to stop counterfeiting two months before its $25 billion IPO
in 2014.
Alibaba Group Holding said on Monday it will pay $250 million to settle a US
lawsuit faulting the Chinese e-commerce company for concealing a regulatory
warning about its ability to stop counterfeiting before it went public in 2014.
The lawsuit accused Alibaba of securities fraud for failing to disclose
it had met with China's State Administration for Industry and Commerce on July
16, 2014, two months before the company's $25 billion initial public offering.

Retailers sound the alarm over tough anti-fraud
rules for online sales
Tough new anti-fraud rules could make it impossible to process online
transactions and result in businesses missing out on sales worth billions of
pounds, industry groups have warned.
From Sep 14 purchases worth more than £30 will require "two-factor
authentication", such as a bank card and a password, or a mobile phone and a
fingerprint.
The aim is to make online transactions more secure, on a par with the
chip-and-PIN system required in shops.
However, retailers fear that far too few businesses are aware they will need to
prepare for the move. They say the payments industry and regulator have failed
to set out a clear and standardised system to allow the change to happen
smoothly. (Subscription required)

According to police, the crime happened on Thursday, April 25, at about 4:45 in
the afternoon. A man in a blue shirt is seen in the Dollar General store on Old

during $2,300 transaction
Investigators need help identifying a quick change artist who paid for expensive
items with too little cash. The theft happened at the Walmart near Highway 370
and Interstate 80 in Gretna. A man is caught on camera counting out $2,300 in
cash to buy two laptops and an iPad. The clerk told the man the payment is
short, so he takes back the money. Instead of adding more cash, he keeps most of
it in his other hand. The clerk was fooled into not only taking less money but
giving change. "He basically keeps over half of what he had given her originally
and left the store with the merchandise and about $1,500 in cash," Det. Kevin
Jones with the Sarpy County Sheriff's Office explained.

Developing your verbal skills and focusing on your specific word usage to convey
messages is incredibly important for any successful executive. However,
developing your ability to listen and hear what they're saying is just as
important and in some cases may be even more so. It's great to be able to
articulate in a manner that shows your subject matter expertise, but it's even
better if you can mold it and change it on a dime based on what you're hearing
and seeing. And if your too busy talking, you may just miss the entire
conversation and say something that doesn't even fit. Active listening requires
focus and attention and, as Abraham Lincoln said, "Better to remain silent and
be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."
Just a Thought, Gus
