Walgreen's Sued by Sister of Man Allegedly Killed
by Guard
The twin sister of a 20-year-old man allegedly shot and killed by a security
guard who worked at a Walgreens store in Hollywood in December is suing the drug
store chain. Psykssyanna Hart, sibling of Jonathan Hart, brought the complaint
in Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday, alleging negligence, assault and
battery and a violation of civil rights.
The siblings' mother, Psychesia Hart, filed a similar suit against Walgreens on
Thursday. But the new suit states that Hart's mother was not involved in much of
the young man's life. "This lawsuit concerns the despicable conduct of
Walgreens, a multibillion-dollar corporation, whose executive board placed
Walgreens interests in maximizing the corporation's profits above the safety of
innocent consumers shopping at their stores," the suit alleges. It also
alleges
Walgreens was negligent in the screening, hiring and training of security guards
hired through third-party companies. The plaintiff seeks unspecified damages.
Walgreens released a statement after the first suit was filed.
"As we have stated from the beginning, we immediately terminated the security
company that employed the guard involved in this tragic incident," the statement
read. "We are fully committed to providing a safe environment for our employees
and customers in the communities we serve. Any suggestion of racial profiling or
discrimination is simply false and contrary to our deep commitment to inclusive
diversity."
The suit alleges that Hart was shot and killed by guard Donald Ciota about 8
p.m. Dec. 2 as Hart tried to leave the store after falsely being accused of
shoplifting. Hart was targeted because he was black and gay, the suit states.
Co-defendants in the new suit with Walgreens are Ciota, American Protection
Group Inc. and S.E.B. Services, two companies that provide security guards to
Walgreens.

7,000 Armed Security Guards Could be Working Unlicensed in Louisiana
In response to estimates that as many as 7,000 armed security guards are
operating without a license, the Louisiana State Board of Private Security
Examiners will, in the next few weeks, train 318 law enforcement officers in
Baton Rouge to inspect the credentials of on-duty guards.
The issue of private
security guards operating illegally isn't a new one, nor is it unique to
Louisiana. Still, LSBPSE Executive Director Fabian Blache says the board's
effort - called Operation Forged Alliance - has already caught 9,864 guards working
illegally since the program had its soft launch in late 2017.
Typically, these
guards provide security at retail centers, banks and hotels as well as being
hired for private events. They publicly pushed the initiative in New Orleans a
couple of months ago, and Blache says he spoke to Baton Rouge Police Department
officials on Tuesday about following suit.

How Amazon automatically tracks and fires warehouse workers for 'productivity'
Documents show how the company tracks and
terminates workers
Amazon's fulfillment centers are the engine of the company - massive warehouses
where workers track, pack, sort, and shuffle each order before sending it on its
way to the buyer's door.
Critics say those fulfillment center workers face strenuous conditions: workers
are pressed to "make rate," with some packing hundreds of boxes per hour, and
losing their job if they don't move fast enough. "You've always got somebody
right behind you who's ready to take your job," says Stacy Mitchell, co-director
of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance and a prominent Amazon critic.
Documents obtained by The Verge show those productivity firings are far more
common than outsiders realize. In a signed letter last year, an attorney
representing Amazon said
the company fired "hundreds" of employees at a single facility between August of
2017 and September 2018 for failing to meet productivity quotas.
A spokesperson for the company said that, over that time, roughly 300 full-time
associates were terminated for inefficiency.
The number represents a substantial portion of the facility's workers: a
spokesperson said the named fulfillment center in Baltimore includes about 2,500
full-time employees today. Assuming a steady rate, that would mean
Amazon was firing more than 10 percent of its staff annually, solely for
productivity reasons. The numbers are even
more staggering in North America as a whole. Amazon operates more than 75
fulfillment centers with more than 125,000 full-time employees, suggesting
thousands lose their jobs with the company annually for failing to move packages
quickly enough.
The documents also show a deeply automated tracking and termination process.
"Amazon's system tracks the rates of each individual associate's productivity,"
according to the letter, "and automatically generates any warnings or
terminations regarding quality or productivity without input from supervisors."
(Amazon says supervisors are able to override the process.)

Suddenly, free 1-day shipping is the new normal
At first, Target and Walmart seemed blindsided by
Amazon's announcement last Thursday that its free two-day Prime shipping
offer is already on its way to becoming free delivery in just one day for many
items. Those retailers' shares took a hit in the initial aftermath.
Walmart didn't take that lying down, however, and headed to Twitter late Friday
to not just meet Amazon's challenge, but raise it. "One-day free shipping ...
without a membership fee," the retail giant tweeted. "Now THAT would be
groundbreaking. Stay tuned."

Feds Want Dollar Tree To Forfeit Fake Barbie Dolls
The U.S. attorney for the District of Minnesota has slapped Dollar Tree with a
civil forfeiture complaint over thousands of allegedly infringing Barbie dolls,
the office said Thursday. The prosecutor's office announced it was seeking the
forfeiture of nearly 22,000 "fashion dolls" imported by Greenbrier International
Inc., which does business as Dollar Tree Inc. These dolls infringe on toy maker
Mattel Inc.'s copyright, specifically features of Mattel's "CEO Barbie" doll
head, the office said.
The allegedly infringing dolls were discovered by U.S. Customs and Border
Protection in September 2017 after a Canadian National Railway train stopped in
Ranier, Minnesota, carrying a shipping container belonging to Dollar Tree, the
office said. Agency officials opened the container, which was marked "other
toys," and discovered the dolls.

Cities could discourage to-go cups
Environmentalists working with local governments may have a new target to draw
their ire: the to-go coffee cup. As local and national governments move to tax -
or ban - to-go cups, Starbucks and Dunkin' race to find an alternative. Earlier
this year Berkeley, Calif.'s city council instituted a new 25-cent charge on
take-away cups. Other local governments challenged by waste disposal may soon
follow.
The United States creates 120 billion take-away cups each year, or about 20% of
the global total. Almost all the cups end up in landfills where they take up to
20 years to decompose.

Hedge fund investor blamed for tanking Payless
Payless ShoeSource filed for bankruptcy in February and announced that it would
close all its stores in the U.S. along with the company's website. Some believe
that the company's failure can be blamed on Alden Global Capital, the retailer's
majority shareholder, which took steps that undermined Payless' chances for a
turnaround while helping the firm reap benefits at the expense of employees and
creditors. A judge in the Eastern District of Missouri ruled last week that
measures be put in place that would ensure that creditors and lenders get equal
treatment to Alden during the bankruptcy process.

The Great Privacy Debate: U.S. judge allows law enforcement
to compel suspect to unlock smartphone with biometrics
A U.S. federal district court judge in Massachusetts has ruled that agents of
the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) can force people
to unlock their smartphones with fingerprint biometrics in the execution of a
search warrant,
The Register reports.
Judge Judith Dein approved the warrant to search the property of a suspected
firearms trafficker, including any iPhone found at his Boston apartment. The
affidavit notes that communications with cell phones are among the evidence that
led to the identification of the suspect, and that his iPhone could therefore
reasonably be expected to contain evidence of illegal activity. The officer
providing the affidavit also points out that the biometric unlocking method is
necessary because otherwise the device can only be unlocked with the password,
which the suspect would have to voluntarily provide.
Passwords are considered potentially self-incriminating testimony, and therefore
are protected by the Fifth Amendment, which led a forensics consultancy to
advise law enforcement to try to preserve the possibility of biometric unlocking
for seized devices last year.
A California judge recently ruled that U.S. police
cannot compel people to unlock devices with their facial or fingerprint
biometrics, arguing that biometrics are equivalent to the physiological
responses of lie-detector tests, which are considered testimony. A similar point
was made in a
2017 ruling in an Illinois federal court case.

Canada: McDonald's app customers are getting their accounts hijacked by hackers
who spent as much as $2,000 on enormous orders of Big Macs and nuggets
McDonald's app users are being targeted by hackers who order more than $2,000
worth of meals and leave no trace. The "My McD's" app in Canada can be used to
pre-order food and drink for collection, and stores credit card information for
payments. So far in 2019 there have been dozens of reports on Twitter, App Store
reviews, and Reddit that the app is often the target of hackers.
McDonald's says it is "aware" of the reports but is "confident in the security
of the app." On some occasions, McDonald's Canada has refused to refund
fraudulent transactions and urged users to contact their banks for compensation.

Apple accused of anti-competitive practices after removing rival apps
Apple has removed several apps that enable parents to track and limit their
children’s screen time. Apple said it was because those apps were abusing a kind
of technology that enables third parties to access sensitive information
including user location and the device’s camera. A screen time tracker is built
into the iPhone software by default, and third-party app developers claimed they
are being treated unfairly.

P2P Weakness Exposes Millions of IoT Devices
A peer-to-peer (P2P) communications technology built into millions of security
cameras and other consumer electronics includes several critical security flaws
that expose the devices to eavesdropping, credential theft and remote
compromise, new research has found.
The security flaws involve iLnkP2P, software developed by China-based Shenzhen Yunni Technology. iLnkP2p is bundled with millions of Internet of Things (IoT)

Namogoo Report Reveals How Online Fraud Is
Effecting E-Commerce Industry
Namogoo, the company fighting against Online Journey Hijacking – a rapidly
growing challenge facing eCommerce brands – today released its latest
Benchmark Report for 2018. The key findings provide a comprehensive look at
a growing but little-known problem that affects 15-25 percent of all user web
sessions and costs eCommerce brands hundreds of millions in revenue.
With the only solution helping online retailers block Online Journey Hijacking,
Namogoo uses analytics and machine learning to prevent the injection of
unauthorized ads that direct consumers to competitors’ sites. Powered by these
AI analytics, Namogoo’s report illustrates the scale and impact of this problem
on both user experience and online business revenue. The findings are based on
an analysis of billions of page views in 2018 across various eCommerce verticals
in the U.S. and Europe.

desktop and mobile users at 24.66% and 19.19% respectively.
Mobile Infection Rates: Infection rates on desktops are generally higher
than on mobile devices. This can be attributed to the fact that while mobile
browsing is increasing, most conversions still occur on desktops. Desktop users
in both the U.S. and Europe infected with Online Journey Hijacking – hovering at
just over 20 percent of all desktop website visitors – substantially impacted
online revenue for businesses throughout 2018.

Desktop infection rates include home (23.13 percent), apparel (22.99 percent),

Checkout Abandonment Rates: As the report’s conversion findings suggest,
the most active consumers are often exposed to unauthorized promotions as a
result of downloading malicious content. Once these disruptions are removed from
their experience at checkout, they abandon this critical stage of the sales
funnel less frequently, making purchases more often.

Amazon users targeted in 'brushing' scam
According to retail security experts, a scam known as "brushing" has targeted
Amazon users across the country. An online seller purchases their own products
with a fake account and ships them to a real address. The seller then writes a
positive review of their items from the fake account.
"The positive reviews are like gold. People are always looking for a new hole in
the structure at Amazon to be able to put more fake positive reviews on them,"
says retail security expert Brian Kilcourse. In a statement to CBS News in 2018,
Amazon said they investigate every report of customers receiving unsolicited
packages and will ban all vendors and reviewers who abuse the reviews system.

Dickson City, PA: Suspects Identified in Baby
Formula/ Electronics thefts from Walmart stores in NJ and PA
Officers have released the names of two men accused in a series of Walmart
heists. Police say the thieves have been at it for months. Naquan Redding and
Rashad Sanford, both from Philadelphia, are two of the three accused of stealing
thousands of dollars in electronics and baby formula from Walmarts in Dickson
City, Taylor, and the Pittston area. Authorities believe Redding and Sanford
have been swiping pricy headphones from stores in Philadelphia and New Jersey
since February. Officers haven't identified the third man yet. None of these
suspects are in custody.

diabetes for $5,000 Walmart theft
A New Port Richey man accused of stealing almost $5,000 worth of merchandise at
a Walmart claims he does not remember doing it. Deputies say Fruggiero had
committed three thefts at the Walmart in a week but Fruggiero says due to his
blood sugar diabetes, he does not always know what he is doing and does not
remember stealing from the Walmart on State Road 54. He has been charged with
scheme to defraud and was transported to Land O' Lakes Detention Center.

Niagara, NY: Empty shelves tip off Walmart LP to
major shoplifting case
A security guard discovered a major case of shoplifting recently after noticing
several empty shelves in the health and beauty section of the Walmart
Supercenter, Town of Niagara Police reported. In a police report filed Sunday,
store officials said that the guard came across the bare shelves around 4:55
a.m. on March 5. When the guard reviewed store surveillance video, it revealed a
man emptying 77 items from the shelves and loading them into totes before
leaving the store without paying for any of them. The value of the stolen goods
was placed at $4,826. The entire theft took nearly 60 minutes to complete.

vehicle crash
A brief police pursuit ended Friday afternoon with a crash, a search and the
arrests of two men in River Edge who authorities said used anti-theft devices to

Puyallup, WA: Deputies searching for suspects
after C-store owner killed in Armed Robbery
Detectives are searching for the suspects responsible for the robbery and murder
of a 79-year-old woman in Puyallup. Deputies say 79-year-old Soon Ja Nam was
killed just after 5 p.m. Saturday when two men robbed her Handy Corner Store on
112th St. E. in Puyallup. Witnesses told investigators two men entered the
store, pulled out handguns and threatened Nam, but after she gave them the money
one of them followed her toward the store office and shot her in the back.

Chicago, IL: Woman shot and Killed in Cellphone
store; 4 Dead, 14 wounded in weekend shootings
At least 18 people have been shot, four fatally, within city limits since Friday
night. A stray shots struck and killed a 36-year-old woman Friday in Chicago
Lawn. Candice Dickerson was in a cellphone store about 6:28 p.m. in the 5900
block of South Kedzie Avenue when someone fired shots, police said. She was
pronounced dead at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Sulphur, OK: 1 woman shot to death outside
Walmart; 1 man in custody
Officials confirm one woman is dead following a shooting at the Walmart in
Sulphur Sunday. According to officials, officers responded to reports of a
shooting around 6 p.m. in the store parking lot. Police found one victim and
took one suspect into custody.

Methuen, MA: Police Charge 2 Men With Stealing
$65,000 in ATM Theft Ring
Police arrested two men suspected of stealing thousands of dollars from ATMs in
Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Hudson Police in New Hampshire were
investigating a string of thefts from ATMs by an organized group when they
learned the suspects were working out of a room at Days Inn in Methuen. While
executing an additional search warrant for Nirmalachandran’s rental car, police
found a large amount of cash inside duffel bags as well as gift cards, debit
cards, a printing device, and an electronic device used to activate and utilize
bank cards.

Two injured after TJ Maxx shoplifting pursuit,
serious crash on northside of Indianapolis
Sunday afternoon, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were
called around 4 p.m. to investigate a reported shoplifting incident at T.J.
Maxx. Officers then pursued the suspects of the incident as the left the mall
until they ran the light at 75th and Allisonville Road and crashed. The two
suspects were taken to the hospital, the officer said. Both patients were taken
to the hospital in stable condition.

Houston, TX: Bumbling burglars butt-dial 911 on
themselves, arrested after high-speed chase
A pair of bumbling burglars were arrested after apparently butt-dialing 911
while fleeing the scene of a burglary at a Best Buy near Houston early Saturday.
The men are alleged to have knocked off a Best Buy in Sugar Land, Texas, at
about 3 a.m. While responding to an alarm at the store, dispatch received a 911
call in the area, Houston police said. But instead of a caller, they heard only
background noise. Authorities said they pinged the cellphone, which was coming
from a car traveling toward Houston from the suburban electronics store, and
took off in pursuit. The suspects led police on a chase that reached speeds of
120 mph, authorities said. The suspects bailed out of their truck in northeast
Houston, but two of the three men were captured. The third remains at large.
Authorities found stolen laptops and other electronics from Best Buy in the
suspects' truck. The same Best Buy in Sugar Land was the scene of a $200,000
robbery in March 2015.

Gillette, WY Sportsman Warehouse shoplifter fills
out job application
Police were called to Sportsman’s Warehouse on Friday morning on a case of
shoplifting. Sometime Wednesday, loss prevention officers at the store reported
a pair of sunglasses missing along with .30-30 caliber bullets valued at $49.98.
A 36-year-old man was identified as a suspect when he used a rewards card to buy
other items. Three hours later, police were called to the store again on a
shoplifting case with a twist. The same man returned to the store and asked to
fill out a job application. At the time, store officials said he also took two
pairs of sunglasses worth $84.94 without paying for them. Police officers
ticketed the man for the thefts and also recovered all of the items taken. There
was no word on his prospects for a job.

One of your primary objectives in any negotiation should be to show a positive,
upbeat and an enthusiastic approach to the entire process regardless of the
offer. Always wait for the details before accepting any offer because the devil
may be in the details. Remember, the hardest thing to negotiate is the benefits
because of precedent-setting company standards. If you prepared the employer
before the offer with a written (emailed) list of your entire current package in
detail, it can make it easier to discuss when it counts the most.
