Facial Recognition Used Proactively
Amazon Delivery Drivers Required to Take Selfies to Prevent Fraud
According to a report by Business Insider, the new requirements apply to Amazon Flex drivers, who work as independent contractors and deliver packages using their own vehicles. The Amazon Flex app recently started prompting some drivers to share selfies with a pop-up message that says: "To continue delivering, please help us verify your identity by taking a selfie. Do not take a selfie while driving. This photo won't be shown to customers."

The app uses facial recognition software to determine whether the photos match images stored in drivers' accounts.

Before Amazon started requesting selfies, the company asked drivers to consent to the collection and storage of their photos and biometric data, the report said.

AT&T CEO Challenges Corp. Leaders to Hire Formerly Incarcerated
Dallas pastor T.D. Jakes challenged corporate leaders Wednesday to hire thousands of people who have been released from prison, but locked out of the workforce. He made his pitch with one of Dallas' most prominent CEOs by his side: Randall Stephenson of AT&T.

The two Dallas leaders — pastor of megachurch The Potter's House and top executive of the nation's 9th largest company — struck up a friendship after meeting two years ago at the Dallas Festival of Ideas. They talked about barriers to opportunity, especially for the formerly incarcerated. They decided to team up.

AT&T has hired about a dozen employees who were formerly incarcerated to work at a Richardson call center as part of a pilot program. Stephenson said the company now plans to expand the program to other cities.

"If we truly are going to be a society who wants to ensure that we don't just have this revolving door to our prison system, then you've got to step up," he said. "You've got to be part of the solution." dallasnews.com

DeKalb Jury Awards Nearly $70M in Kroger Parking Lot Robbery-Shooting Case
Navy vet Laquan Taylor was shot multiple times during a robbery and carjacking at the Kroger on Moreland Avenue, leaving him paraplegic.

On Thursday, a DeKalb County jury delivered a post-apportioned award of more than $69.6 million to a young Navy veteran shot multiple times during a robbery and carjacking at a Moreland Avenue Kroger store, leading to multiple surgeries and leaving him paraplegic. Lead plaintiff’s attorney Peter Law said the evidence was overwhelming that Kroger knew the store was located in an unsafe, high-crime area, yet failed to place any security guards in the parking lot where Laquan Taylor was robbed and shot. law.com

Cargo thefts across U.S., Canada decline in Q1
A total of 140 cargo theft incidents were reported — a 22 percent year-over-year decrease — for an estimated total loss of $12.8 million, according to CargoNet.

Food and beverage remained the most stolen commodity category. Household cargo and electronics cargo were the second and third most stolen, with tools, lawn care products and major appliances being the most stolen household items and television and computers being the most stolen electronics. americanshipper.com

Gatekeeper Systems Helps Kroger Prevent Pushout Theft

Huntsville, AL: Kroger Shoplifter attempting to steal over $600 in groceries, stopped with locking cart wheels

Huntsville police say a Kroger customer tried to make off with nearly $600 worth of groceries, but he didn’t get far. Police say the man loaded up a cart then wheeled it past the cashiers without paying. But the wheels on his cart locked, stopping this shoplifter in his tracks.

A Kroger manager said they have technology from Gatekeeper Systems that will lock the cart’s wheels if the groceries aren’t scanned.

The suspect is still at large and, according to Kroger, is a repeat offender who’s left the same store with a loaded cart 12 times before. waff.com

Bay Area Apple Store Thefts Restart
The massive ring that carried out dozens of Apple Store thefts throughout California last year was busted in the fall, but that doesn't mean such crimes are a thing of the past. In fact, four such incidents have been reported just at the 4th Street Apple Store in Berkeley in the last week. Each time the thieves, according to CBS San Francisco, came into the store, stole the items, and "used brute force" to grab them. Big Companies Thought Insurance Covered a Cyberattack - They May Be Wrong
Mondelez, who suffered a $100M cyber attack by the so-called NotPetya cyberstrike in 2017. is not getting any insurance pay out.

Mondelez’s insurer, Zurich Insurance, said it would not be sending a reimbursement check. It cited a common, but rarely used, clause in insurance contracts: the “war exclusion,” which protects insurers from being saddled with costs related to damage from war.

Mondelez was deemed collateral damage in a cyberwar.

The 2017 attack was a watershed moment for the insurance industry. Since then, insurers have been applying the war exemption to avoid claims related to digital attacks. In addition to Mondelez, the pharmaceutical giant Merck said insurers had denied claims after the NotPetya attack hit its sales research, sales and manufacturing operations, causing nearly $700 million in damage.

When the United States government assigned responsibility for NotPetya to Russia in 2018, insurers were provided with a justification for refusing to cover the damage. Just as they wouldn’t be liable if a bomb blew up a corporate building during an armed conflict, they claim not to be responsible when a state-backed hack strikes a computer network.

The disputes are playing out in court. In a closely watched legal battle, Mondelez sued Zurich Insurance last year for a breach of contract in an Illinois court, and Merck filed a similar suit in New Jersey in August. Merck sued more than 20 insurers that rejected claims related to the NotPetya attack, including several that cited the war exemption. The two cases could take years to resolve. nytimes.com

The number of attacks carried out using the popular suite has increased in the past two years, Kaspersky Lab researchers say.

The threat landscape has changed in the past two years and urged users to keep their software up-to-date and to avoid opening files that come from untrusted sources to reduce the risk of infection.

Today, more than 70% of all the attacks Kaspersky Lab catches are targeting Microsoft Office, and only 14% take advantage of browser vulnerabilities. csoonline.com

Inside Best Buy's Robot-Filled E-Commerce Centers
Best Buy shrunk its shipping time by three days after adding bins and robots to strategically located ecommerce fulfillment centers.

Best Buy found logistics system integrator Bastian Solutions, coupled with AutoStore - a bin storage system in which bins are stacked vertically in a grid and retrieved by robots that travel on the top layer of the system - to overhaul its distribution centers. The process took about 12 months to implement, but the retailer declined to provide specifics of costs or when it started using the new system.

At each of Best Buy's three metro ecommerce centers, the retailer now has 30,000 bins and 73 robots. Best Buy delivers about 30-40% of a store's inventory from its metro ecommerce centers and segregates store delivery by aisle. At Best Buy's regional distribution centers - located in San Francisco, Atlanta and Findlay, Ohio - Bastian and AutoStore outfitted the centers with 150,000 bins and 195 robots. digitalcommerce360.com

It’s not just Amazon: Many top retailers are growing their online sales
North America’s leading online retailers increased their worldwide online sales by 17.6% in 2018, according to the just-released 2019 Internet Retailer Top 1000 Report. If you exclude top-ranked Amazon.com Inc., whose 20.0% growth brings up the Top 1000 average, the rest of the Top 1000 would have increased their ecommerce sales by 16.6% in 2018.

That’s significantly higher than the 14.2% increase in online retail sales in the United States as reported by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the 14.7% increase in Canada. That means the Top 1000 online retailers gained market share over their smaller rivals.

And growth was widespread within the Top 1000. In fact, 475 Top 1000 companies increased their online sales by more than 15%, well above the overall growth for the ecommerce market, and 341 increased their online sales by more than Amazon’s 20.0% growth rate. digitalcommerce360.com

The Data Scientist Shortage Will Continue Beyond 2019
In the U.S. alone, there are about 151,000 more data science jobs than there are qualified applicants to fill them. Part of the shortage is due to the rise in demand as more companies work to leverage their data for security, marketing, product development, and other operations. The shortfall is also due to the fact that data science careers typically require a master's or doctoral degree, and most universities don't offer data science programs. Orange County, FL: 4 young thieves use sledgehammers to steal over $340k of jewelry
A group of four suspects smashed their way to a large, yet short term payday at the Florida Mall jewelry store on Thursday by using sledgehammers to break the cases of 17 watches worth over $340,000. The four suspects, three in their early 20’s and a 17-year old were arrested on charges of first-degree grand theft and felony criminal mischief. Mayors Jewelry was hit at 6:10 p.m. and store employees told officers some of 17 watches taken were embellished with diamonds that ranged from $6,500 to $39,000. Deputies and a Sheriff's Office helicopter were called to follow the car. They found all four suspects inside a home and all were immediately arrested. foxnews.com

Washington Township, NJ: Distraction Theft: 4 thieves fill a duffle bag with OTC medications and flee
Two men and two women entered the store late Friday evening. Police said the men were in conversation with the employees while the two women swiped allergy medications and other items and placed them in a duffel bag. They all fled the scene, police said. northjersey.com

Santa Fe, NM: Arrest warrants issued for 4 in Shoplifting Ring targeting Lowe’s and Home Depot
According to arrest warrant affidavits filed Friday, loss prevention officers at the stores spotted four people concealing power tools and battery chargers. The group had entered and left within minutes without paying for merchandise. The items taken were valued at nearly $5,000. All four suspects, who have not yet been arrested in these cases, have lengthy prior histories of shoplifting. santafenewmexican.com

Boyd County, KY: Six people were arrested for Refund Fraud at multiple Walmart’s; returning old TV’s in new boxes
The Boyd County Sheriff's Office arrested the 4 women and 2 men on charges of theft and engaging in an organized crime/criminal syndicate for retail theft. Deputies say the six are accused of attempting to deceive Wal-Mart locations in South Point, Ohio as well as Ashland and Cannonsburg, Ky. by taking TV's that didn’t not work back in new boxes, in an effort to receive cash on the return. Roxbury, NJ: Claiming to be Armed, Man Steals Power Tools from Home Depot
The robbery took place Friday at 7:10 a.m. “A Home Depot employee witnessed a male attempting to shoplift a cart full of powertools,” Police said. “When the suspect was approached, the male had his hand in his pocket and stated he had a gun, at which point the employee stepped away from the suspect.” Police said the employee did not see a weapon. tapinto.net

Raleigh, NC: Police kill suspect at North Carolina shopping center
A 30-year-old man was killed in an officer-involved shooting Saturday night in Raleigh at a shopping center off New Bern Avenue. Raleigh Police identified the man Sunday as Soheil Antonio Mojarrad, 30, but have declined to describe what led up to the shooting. The Raleigh Police officer, W.B. Edwards, was wearing a body camera at the time, but it had not been activated. The shooting happened after 8:30 p.m. Saturday in a shopping center anchored by a Food Lion store. wral.com

Three males involved in a shootout with an employee during a robbery of a Little Caesar’s used female employees as shields as they escaped the restaurant. A suspect in the robbery is in police custody after he later went to the hospital with gunshot wounds to his legs. A male employee at Little Caesar’s who exchanged gunfire with the suspects was wounded in the arm. cleveland.com

Riverdale, GA: Man arrested for opening fire at Florist
Police charge a Clayton County man with aggravated assault after investigators said he violently attacked a florist. Officers said Justin Daniels, 25, confronted the victim behind the Riverdale Florist Boutique Thursday afternoon and opened fire. The employee ran back into the store and was injured when he fell during his escape. The shootout reportedly continued when Daniels walked around to the front of the store. No one was shot. Jurupa Valley, CA: More Than 2-Dozen Treated After Robbers Discharge Bear Spray In Kmart
Paramedics treated more than two-dozen employees and patrons after a pair of robbers discharged a canister of bear spray while stealing merchandise on Saturday. When store staff confronted the men, one of them pulled out a can of bear spray and began spraying people. The men then ran off and were not found. One person was taken to a hospital for treatment. ktla.com

Loganville, GA: Car smashes into a Gun Store, driver steals as many weapons as he can carry
Police are looking for at least 3 men they say drove a stolen car into a gun shop Friday morning. Surveillance footage shows a man in a car plow through the X3 Firearms about 5 a.m. The driver inside the store then hopped out, smashed a gun case and picked up as many handguns as he could carry before taking them to his waiting accomplices. Seconds later, the man returns to the store before leaving with several shotguns. The entire burglary took about one minute. ajc.com

Baltimore, MD: Brazilian Citizens Sentenced to More Than Three Years in Federal Prison for Using Counterfeit Credit Cards to Purchase Over $52,000 in Merchandise and for Aggravated Identity Theft
U.S. District Judge Richard D. Bennett sentenced two Brazilian citizens residing in Florida to 40 months each in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, on wire fraud charges in connection with a scheme to use counterfeit debit and credit cards to purchase merchandise at various retail stores in Maryland and other states. Lucas Pimenta Diogo Das Gracas, age 23, was sentenced on April 11, 2019, and his co-conspirator, Diogo Miranda Araujo, age 23, was sentenced on April 1, 2019. Judge Bennett ordered the defendants to pay restitution totaling $41,116. Das Gracas was ordered to pay $34,540 and Araujo was ordered to pay $6,576. justice.gov

Always wait for the details before accepting any offer because the devil may be in the details. Remember, the hardest thing to negotiate is the benefits because of precedent-setting company standards. If you prepared the employer before the offer with a written (emailed) list of your entire current package in detail, it can make it easier to discuss when it counts the most.
