Over 180 Attend IAI Elite Training Day 2019 (#ETD 2019)

ETD 2019 presented by the International Association of Interviewers (IAI) opened at Chicos in Ft. Myers, FL on Wednesday April 3rd. Over 180 attendees were present for a full day of elite presentations by John Fenzel (The Green Beret Way), John Diederich (Active Shooter – From Training to Survival: A COO’s Story), and Dr. Chris Kelly with Dave Thompson, CFI (CFI vs PhD, Different Letters: Same Goals).

John Fenzel’s presentation dealt with achieving objectives unconditionally – by, with and through. John is a 30 year Special Forces Veteran, Pentagon, and White House Fellow. He had the attendees looking at complex operating environments and how to navigate through them to reach our goals. For both leadership and interviewing; developing rapport, active listening (Levels of Listening) and effective communication are important components discussed by John. His experience in combat settings, high-pressure training and overcoming cultural barriers provided incredible insight to the attendees.

John Diederich oversaw creating and maintaining his hospital’s active shooter protocol. Immediately after dealing with the roll out to his staff, he finds himself on October 1, 2017 in Las Vegas at a country concert. John takes us through his experience being in the direct line of fire during the mass shooting, 12 groupings of over 100 shots each time. From being in a fog, freezing to running, being crushed, scared, and his family; John takes you through his thoughts, regrets, training kicking in, and witnessing others reactions to the shooting. A very moving experience and passionate presentation led the attendees down the path of what impact our training has on our employees and what needs to be done differently for these situations.

FDA Warns Walgreens, CVS & Others:
Stop Making "Egregious & Unfounded" Claims About CBD Products
The Food and Drug Administration has sent warning letters to companies it says are making "egregious and unfounded" claims about the benefits of products made with CBD, a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis, the agency said Tuesday.

Scott Gottlieb, the agency's commissioner, also said he was "concerned" that several national pharmacy chains have begun selling CBD products and warned that the FDA will be contacting those chains to "remind them of FDA obligations." Walgreens and CVS both recently announced that they will begin selling products with CBD. aol.com

Roadrunner Transportation Former CFO Charged with $245 Million Securities and Accounting Fraud Scheme
The former chief financial officer (CFO) of Roadrunner Transportation Systems Inc. (Roadrunner), a publicly traded transportation and trucking company formerly headquartered in Cudahy, Wisconsin, was charged in a superseding indictment unsealed today for his alleged role in a complex securities and accounting fraud scheme that resulted in a loss of more than $245 million in shareholder value. The superseding indictment also includes additional charges against two former Roadrunner finance executives for their roles in the scheme. 

“According to the charges, former CFO Peter Armbruster, and former executives Mark Wogsland and Bret Naggs, used sham accounting entries, misstated accounts, and other means to conceal millions of dollars of bad debts and other financial problems from Roadrunner’s shareholders, regulators, lenders, and the investing public,” said Assistant Attorney General Benczkowski. “This pattern of deception allegedly caused investors to lose hundreds of millions of dollars. justice.gov

Tulsa named 'most-robbed city' in Oklahoma
Tulsa has more robberies than any other city in the state, according to a new report. According to YourLocalSecurity.com, a security company that aims to provide tools to build a safer home environment, Tulsa came in as No. 1 as the most-robbed city in the state. Robberies are defined as “taking or attempting to take anything of value from the care, custody, or control of a person or persons by force or threat of force or violence and/or putting the victim in fear.”

According to the company's data, Tulsa experienced 964 robberies in 2017. Baltimore, Maryland was reported to have the highest per capita number of robberies of any city. The report covers cities with at least 20,000 residents. kjrh.com

Target raises its minimum wage to $13 an hour, with goal of $15 by end of 2020
Target said Thursday it is increasing its minimum hourly wage by a dollar to $13 in June for all current and new employees as part of its goal to hit $15 an hour by the end of 2020. It is the latest step in a series of annual increases it has made since it announced in September 2017 a plan to raise its minimum starting hourly pay from $10 to $15 over three years.

Target’s rate is higher than rival Walmart’s $11 an hour minimum, set in January 2018, but is still below Amazon, which raised its hourly minimum to $15 an hour in November. cnbc.com

NRF: Border closure would be ‘self-inflicted wound to the American economy’
The National Retail Federation today sent a letter to Trump administration officials expressing concerns over ongoing threats to close the United States-Mexico border and outlining how a closure would hurt U.S. retailers, workers and consumers.

A woman bought out a Payless store to help Nebraska flooding victims
A woman walked out of Payless with hundreds of new shoes, but none of them are for her. Addy Tritt saw that all pairs of shoes were on sale for $1 at her local Payless in Hays, Kansas, last week, and something told her to go.

The retail value of the shoes was around $6,000, Tritt said. She said she negotiated for 2.5 hours until she could get all of the shoes in the store -- 204 pairs -- for pennies each, and only paid $100 for the bill. Tritt donated all of the shoes to Nebraska flood victims.

The store needed to sell the shoes anyway. Payless announced in February that it was closing all its stores across the United States and started liquidation sales. cnn.com

Holding Execs Liable - 1 to 3 Yrs Prison Time for Data Breaches
Elizabeth Warren introduced a bill to hold executives liable for company data breaches. A proposal from Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.) called the Corporate Executive Accountability Act would hold liable executives at companies making more than $1 billion for data breaches and other civil violations that harm large portions of the American public. Executives could face fines and up to one year of jail for a first violation affecting “health, safety, financial or personal data” of 1% of the U.S. population or the population of a state. Executives could receive up to three years of jail for additional offenses. cmail19.com

Report: FBI Fails to Promptly Notify Cybercrime Victims
Inspect General Cites Numerous Errors in How FBI Makes Notifications
Failed to Notify One Company for Nine Months

The FBI is largely failing to notify cybercrime victims of their rights in a timely manner following a "cyber intrusion," a new report from the U.S. Justice Department's inspector general finds. At times, small errors, such as typographical mistakes, can cause long delays in the notification process, according to the report.

The report is critical of a system called Cyber Guardian, which the bureau uses to track and disseminate cybercrime victim notices. The inspector general says the system largely fails in making sure these notices are sent on time, especially when the issue relates to national security concerns. A new platform, dubbed CyNERGY, will replace it later this year, the report notes.

Not notifying victims of their rights in a timely manner is a violation of attorney general guidelines and could cause additional problems as agents investigate these types of crimes, according to the report. "Some victims complained about the timeliness of the notifications and whether the information provided by the FBI was adequate to remediate the threat to IT systems," the report states.

In one case, the report says, agents did not notify a company about a cyber incident until nine months later. By the time the FBI showed up to investigate, the firm needed to hire a third party to retrieve the logs needed for the investigation. govinfosecurity.com

A.I. Experts Question Amazon’s Facial-Recognition Technology
Letter Calls for Amazon to Stop Selling 'Rekognition' Product to Law Enforcement

At least 25 prominent artificial-intelligence researchers, including experts at Google, Facebook, Microsoft and a recent winner of the prestigious Turing Award, have signed a letter calling on Amazon to stop selling its facial-recognition technology to law enforcement agencies because it is biased against women and people of color.

The letter, which was publicly released Wednesday, reflects growing concern in academia and the tech industry that bias in facial-recognition technology is a systemic problem. Proposed Illinois legislation could be death knell for biometric lawsuits
Although the Illinois Supreme Court’s recent decision in Rosenbach v. Six Flags may have upped the ante for employers facing litigation under the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (“BIPA”), a recent bill introduced in the Illinois Senate, SB2134, would remove plaintiffs’ right to bring private causes of action under BIPA and instead allow them to file a complaint with the Illinois Department of Labor (“IDOL”), and to be enforced by the DOL and the Illinois Attorney General.

If this proposed bill ultimately becomes signed legislation, it would be the death knell for private party BIPA class actions. As ten or more BIPA class actions are being filed in Illinois state and federal courts on a daily basis, employers should closely follow developments involving this proposed legislation while concurrently pursuing BIPA compliance activities. jdsupra.com

 


 


 


Cards On File Cut eCommerce Friction
Storing a card on file is an integral part of the shopping experience for many consumers, as eCommerce continues to explode across the retail landscape. Late last month, SentiLink, which uses technology to detect and prevent synthetic fraud, raised $14 million in a Series A round earmarked for a number of initiatives. Trust continues to be a key reason consumers choose one bank over another, and the subscription box market in the U.K. is projected to soon have a billion-dollar value.

● 80.6 percent: Share of credit union customers in a recent survey who identified trust as a reason to remain with their institutions.
● 44 percent: Share of consumers who have cards on file with three to five merchants.

Why Your Fraud Attack Rate Really Matters
Successful fraud attacks are one of the clearest indicators to fraudsters which businesses are the most vulnerable and easiest for them to commit fraud. If you are an “easy target,” that generally means that fraudsters have found they can at least get in and begin to transact. eBay plans to shutter eBay Commerce Network
A little more than a month after eBay Inc. announced plans to restructure its business, the online marketplace announced that on May 1 it will shutter eBay Commerce Network, its third-party advertising network that enables merchants to advertise their products on non-eBay sites.

EBay Commerce Network evolved out of eBay’s 2005 purchase of comparison-shopping engine Shopping.com. Eight years after the deal, the online marketplace created an ad network around Shopping.com, which it dubbed eBay Commerce Network. It then remade Shopping.com into a publisher that was part of the eBay Commerce Network. Now that eBay plans to close down the ad network, it will park the Shopping.com domain while it evaluates various options, says Bridget Davies, the online marketplace’s vice president of advertising. digitalcommerce360.com

Update: Charlotte, NC: Man sold $3 million in stolen merchandise out of storage unit through eBay
Pictures of a multi-million dollar eBay store that sold stolen items out of a storage unit were released by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police on Wednesday. Edwin Barkley, 63, pleaded guilty last month to transporting stolen property in the case. CMPD said Barkley had co-conspirators who would steal tools from Lowe's, Home Depot, and Target and sell them to him. Barkley would then turn around and resell the items on eBay through "Tool King USA", according to authorities. "The investigation revealed that between Aug. 2015 and Oct. 2018, the eBay store sold $3 million in stolen merchandise," CMPD said. The investigation revealed more than 19,000 items were listed and sold during the three years under the microscope. Barkley kept the items in four self-storage units. nbc12.com

Temple, TX: $11,000 in perfume and cologne stolen from Ulta Beauty
Temple Police were looking for two women Wednesday they said stole $11,000 worth of perfume and cologne from an Ulta store. A woman named Jacqueline Stolp recorded video of two women leaving the store Tuesday night around 8 p.m. The video shows each of them carrying a bag filled with merchandise. Police said the women threatened an employee before taking the merchandise and leaving the store. kcentv.com

Simi Valley, CA: Police arrest suspect in alleged shoplifting ring; $5,000 of Old Navy merchandise recovered
Police arrested a 20-year-old woman suspected of being part of a commercial shoplifting ring that targeted a local business, authorities said Wednesday. The shoplifting incident occurred in January at Macy’s, Simi Town Center. The store lost more than $1,000 in clothing as a result of the shoplifting crew, authorities said. Police said they launched an investigation into the case and found two suspects were connected with the commercial shoplifting ring.

One suspect, identified as Danielle Graham, 23, of Los Angeles, was arrested Feb. 28 on suspicion of grand theft, conspiracy and organized retail theft. The investigation continued and later identified as Kelsee Kailee Williams, 20. Investigators also learned that Williams and Graham had taken instructions from family and friends as to which sizes and items to steal. On Tuesday, Williams was found by police at a hotel in Bellflower and taken into custody. She was found with more than $5,000 worth of baby clothes stolen from an Old Navy in Cerritos. Williams was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy, grand theft and organized retail theft. vcstar.com

Nashville, TN: Kroger $1,200 Shoplifting Apprehension takes strange turn
Michael John Reynolds, 51, is charged with theft, criminal impersonation and parole violation after the incident on Tuesday. When asked for identification, police said the suspect provided a fake name and social security number, along with an ID that didn't match his eye color. Colorado Springs police said a woman was found dead in a Walmart parking lot early Thursday morning. Police said a man called them just before 3:30 a.m. to report he had shot someone. When officers arrived at the Walmart on Eighth Street, police said they found a woman dead inside a car with multiple gun shot wounds. Officers said they also detained a man who was in the Walmart parking lot. Police said they are investigating this case as a homicide. Springs Police had the back corner of the Walmart parking lot blocked off with crime scene tape for more than five hours as officers investigated. kktv.com

Houston, TX: Gun misfire caught on video during Subway restaurant Armed Robbery
Police are looking for a man seen robbing a Subway restaurant in southeast Houston at gunpoint. On March 27, police said the suspect went into the Subway restaurant located at 9025 Cullen Blvd. and immediately pulled out a gun as he was approaching an employee behind the register and demanded money. The newly released video shows the man pulling the trigger, but for reasons unknown, the gun didn't fire. As he's getting away, video shows the robber slipping and falling at the door. abc13.com

Polk County, FL: Two burglary suspect arrested at Cash America with Bag Of Stolen Gold
Two Winter Haven men were taken into custody Tuesday after alert pawn shop workers told police that the pair was attempting to pawn a bag full of gold. Twenty-one-year-old Frankie Rolle and 19-year-old Davon Brooks were both charged with unarmed burglary, grand theft between $10,000 to $20,000 and related offenses, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said both men have an extensive criminal history. "We appreciate our local businesses cooperating with us to help catch these thieves," said Judd. "Both SunTrust bank and Cash America pawn fully cooperated with our investigation." patch.com

Richard Jones, 31, smashed the display window of the jewellers to snatch valuables in the early hours of the morning, returning a few hours later for more. In college Philosophy 101, they introduce the question "If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?" My answer is yes, but you've got to listen and hear it. Listening and hearing what they say is oftentimes two entirely different functions that most of us don't do on a daily basis, if ever. One of the keys to success is listening and hearing what people say and don't say. It's not just the words, it's the meaning and the intention behind what everyone says in every conversation or interview. Listening is the key and hearing is the lock the key fits into. If you expect to lead a group or land that perfect job, you've got to listen and hear what they're saying in order to respond, influence and truly make a difference.
