Security Industry Association Names the SIA Women in Security Forum
as 2018 Chairman’s Award Winner
The
Security Industry Association (SIA) has selected the SIA Women in Security Forum
as the recipient of the 2018
Chairman’s Award, which recognizes SIA members’ diligent efforts in
furthering the SIA mission and overall commitment to the association’s future.
SIA will present the award at The Advance, SIA’s annual membership meeting,
during ISC West.
The SIA Women in Security Forum supports the advancement of women in the
security industry through programs and opportunities for professional
development, networking and thought leadership. The group – led by a dedicated

'Controversy Remains Over Shoplifting Prevention Technology'
Debate Over Retailers' Use of AI Continues
to Make the Media Rounds
According to
NBC News, a Japanese startup called Vaak is using artificial intelligence
software to help retailers ferret out shoplifters before they leave the store …
and perhaps even before they grab the goods.
The “Vaakeye” technology is designed to work with a standard surveillance system
to help identify behaviors that may constitute “suspicious activity.” Vaak CEO
Ryo Tanaka told NBC that this could include facial expressions, gestures, and
movements — even clothing choices. If someone sets off an internal alert, the
idea is for the store to dispatch personnel for a quick check-in.
And while Vaak says its tech reduced shoplifting incidents by 77% in tests, the
idea of using technology to solve the problem is not without controversy. Sven
Dietrich, a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, told NBC that
these kinds of deep learning algorithms are only as good as the data used to
train them and “might be extracting a certain bias.”
Likewise, a recent report by
CNet suggests that systems that use facial recognition to ID shoplifters can
be inherently problematic, citing California-based video surveillance startup
Kogniz and its “multi-location” cloud system that can save the image of a
shoplifter and share it with other stores' locations.
According to the report, customers can then be flagged whether or not a crime
has been committed, and could even find themselves barred from transacting with
private businesses. Says CNet, “One mistake could mean never being able to
shop again.”

Biometrics Institute launches Ethical Principles for Biometrics
to guide responsible industry behavior
The Biometrics Institute has launched a set of Ethical Principles for Biometrics
at its annual U.S. conference in Washington, D.C. to address the gaps left by
lagging legislation and regulation. Chief Executive Isabelle Moeller asked an
audience of 70 stakeholders from the biometrics community “Just because we can,
should we?”
The group identified seven principles to enable anyone working in the biometrics
industry to demonstrate a commitment to addressing the ethical issues raised by
new technology, and biometrics in particular. The
seven principles are: ethical behavior, meaning to avoid actions
which harm people and the environment beyond legal requirements; ownership of
the biometric and respect for individuals’ personal data, including
recognition of partial ownership of biometric data by individuals; serving
humans, which entails accounting for public good, community safety and net
benefit to individuals; justice and accountability, which means accepting
principles of openness, independent oversight, accountability, and the right of
appeal and appropriate redress; promoting privacy-enhancing technology;
recognizing dignity of individuals and families; and equality,
which entails preventing discrimination or systemic bias.

 Illinois: HB1614 Increasing Felony Threshold to
$2,000 moves forward in Committee with “Do Pass” recommendation
Amends
the Criminal Code of 2012. Increases the threshold amount of theft not from the
person and retail theft that enhances the offense from a misdemeanor to a felony
to $2,000. Provides that an enhancement from a misdemeanor to a felony based on
a prior conviction must only be for felony theft.

Office Depot settles tech support scam FTC complaint, paying $25M in damages
Office Depot agreed yesterday to pay $25 million in a settlement with the US
Federal Trade Commission as part of a lawsuit accusing the company of
tricking customers into buying unneeded tech support services --akin to a
real-world version of online tech support scam sites.
Support.com, a PC health scanning service also named in the lawsuit, also agreed
to pay an additional $10 million, which the FTC said it would use to refund
impacted customers.

At the heart of the FTC investigation was Office Depot's PC Health Check, a PC
diagnostics service that Office Depot was offering to run on computers brought
into stores by customers for routine checks and repairs.
The PC Health Check service required employees to ask customers four questions
about strange popups, slow operating speeds, virus and malware warnings, and PC
crashes or freezes.
The FTC says that checking any of the four options as part of Office Depot's PC
Health Check questionnaire would automatically trigger a positive malware scan
result. Office Depot employees would then step in to offer PC clean-up services
for $180 or higher.

McDonald's halts lobbying against minimum wage hikes
Fast-food giant McDonald's boosted congressional Democrats' efforts to hike the
minimum wage Tuesday by telling the National Restaurant Association that it will
no longer participate in lobby efforts against minimum-wage hikes at the
federal, state or local level.
"We believe increases should be phased in and that all industries should be
treated the same way," Genna Gent, McDonald's vice president of government
relations, wrote in the letter. "The conversation about wages is an important
one; it’s one we wish to advance, not impede."
McDonald's' dramatic shift on the issue comes after the U.S. Chamber of
Commerce signaled it would be willing to negotiate over raising the hourly
minimum, which for a decade has been stuck at $7.25. "We're going to
listen," Chamber President Tom Donohue told reporters in January.

How Many McDonald’s Workers Will Be Pushed Out by Technology?
Could
McD's $300M tech acquisition mean 'very large layoffs'?
McDonald’s Corp. just bought a tech company that can change store menus based on
the weather, what customers might add to menu items they already have selected
and what people are more likely to order in the morning or in the night. It
spent $300 million to buy this firm, called Dynamic Yield. This technology
gets added to order-taking machines in many McDonald’s locations, and it means
very large layoffs are inevitably coming.
McDonald’s is no different from any other fast-food chain, drug store retailer
or mall-based store. Most of these operate on small margins. Employee costs are
high, even though most retail workers are poorly paid. Despite the low pay, the
more layoffs the better, as long as stores can deal with current foot traffic.
And, in many cases, the death of brick-and-mortar retailers means that they need
even fewer people, who can be replaced by technology.
Retailers CVS Health Corp. and Walmart Inc. already have self-checkout at a
number of their stores, which allows them to replace cashiers. Altogether,
the total figure of retail employees who can be replaced by these systems will
rise into the tens of thousands.

Walgreens follows CVS' lead - selling CBD products in 1,500 stores
Walgreens will sell CBD creams, patches and sprays in nearly 1,500 stores in
select states, the company told CNBC on Wednesday. The drugstore chain will sell
the cannabis-based products in Oregon, Colorado, New Mexico, Kentucky,
Tennessee, Vermont, South Carolina, Illinois and Indiana. Walgreens declined to
specify which brands it would carry.
Rival drugstore chain CVS introduced CBD-containing topicals, including creams
and salves, to stores in eight states
earlier in March. As the non-psychoactive cannabis compound becomes one of
the hottest ingredients in consumer products, retailers are carefully evaluating
the market.

sales, is celebrating the opening of the brand's 10,000th international store
today. The store is located in the IBC Mall in the Luohu District of Shenzhen,
China.
The store features the pizza theater design, which is open-concept and allows
customers to watch the action of pizza-making. Its spacious design, which
features more than 1,300 square feet, includes indoor seating for customers as

Vendor Risk: The Second-Class Citizen of Cybersecurity
Attacks originating from insecure vendors and other third parties generate more
than half of reported breaches, yet most companies under-address that source of
vulnerability.
Target’s breach in 2013 via an insecure HVAC vendor popularized the notion
that
a company is only as secure as its weakest link.
The incident was a catalyst for the development of the vendor risk management (VRM)
programs in place today. However, other factors also drive the need for VRM.
For one, data privacy regulations require companies to carefully track sensitive
data entrusted to vendors and carry huge penalties for non-compliance.
Companies also have a natural motivation to hold their vendors more accountable

UPS just beat out Amazon, FedEx, and Uber to make America's first
revenue-generating drone delivery
UPS, in partnership with the drone technology company Matternet, on Tuesday
began its daily drone delivery of medical supplies in WakeMed's campus in
Raleigh, North Carolina. The drone delivery cut the transport time of crucial
medical samples from about half an hour to just over three minutes.
It is the first revenue-generating drone delivery in the US, Bala Ganesh, the
vice president of the Advanced Technology Group at UPS, told Business Insider.
UPS is part of a public-private US Department of Transportation drone-testing
program started last spring. Amazon, which has made highly publicized moves into
drone testing, was not included in the program.

Once an initial leak and the scope of the problem has been identified, and
impacted parties have been alerted, retailers also must continuously monitor the
situation to ensure further leaks don’t ensue and must instill processes to
alert them if additional sensitive information is exposed to outside services.
Yet, to get ahead of the situation and stop trouble before it starts, there are
several steps retailers can proactively take. First, retailers should
meticulously audit and evaluate all third-party applications, as well as any
additional services they rely on before they are officially implemented. This
rigorous assessment procedure allows brands to gain the visibility needed to
fully understand the different entry points attackers could attempt to penetrate
and utilize leaked credit card information for malicious activity. In addition,
auditing can help them answer important questions related to faulty lines
of code and potential loopholes hackers could try to take advantage of.
In addition to auditing prior to implementation, acquiring a detailed
snapshot of all the third-party services currently operating within a
retailer’s website ecosystems is greatly beneficial. This simple punch list
improves overall performance and helps security staff ensure that proper
patching is completed and malicious code modifications can be detected and
eliminated as quickly as possible.

Jersey City, NJ: 23 charged in multi-million dollar shoplifting ring
Walgreens, CVS, Duane Reade, and Ulta among chains targeted
Police in New Jersey said 23 people were charged in a multi-million dollar
shoplifting ring. Officials said a year-long investigation revealed that
shoplifters would steal items from retailers costing them millions of dollars. It targeted large
chains, including Walgreens, CVS, Duane Reade, and Ulta Beauty.
Those items were then sold online for full price to unsuspecting shoppers.
Law enforcement described the ring as a "sophisticated operation." The operation
originally started with hundreds of thousands of dollars in Jersey City, and
that snowballed into millions of dollars in organized retail theft,
spanning all the way out to Suffolk County, Long Island.
Police
identified the ringleader as Stephan Williams, of Jersey City. The organization
also employed a financier, drivers, cashiers, and individual shoplifters. Police
said Williams or other high-ranking targets would find individuals and show them
a catalog of items, such as over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and
beauty supplies. The drivers would load up a car of five to 10
shoplifters and drop them off at retail locations throughout New Jersey and New
York.
Those shoplifters were then tasks to steal items from the catalog and were paid
for each item shoplifted. The items were then broken down, brought to a stock
room on Bidwell Avenue in Jersey City, and sold on eBay. At least seven counties
in New Jersey were targeted, as well as Queens, Nassau County, and Suffolk
County.

Laguna Niguel, CA: Family Owned Jewelry Store
Suffers Million-Dollar Loss In Brazen Burglary; alarm never activated
Every diamond, watch and precious piece owned by beloved customers was stolen in
the brazen heist. The jeweler has video clips of three people behind the Crown
Valley Parkway store right before the power was mysteriously cut off around 8
p.m. March 23. It wasn’t discovered until Monday morning. “So they had so much
time on their hands while they were in here because the alarm monitoring company
did not call us at home like they were supposed to,” Hassine said. This is the
second recent Jewelry Store Burglary in the area.

Framingham, MA: Shoplifter steals $10,000 in
jewelry
from The Paper Store locations

shoplifter has systematically stolen more than $10,000 worth of jewelry from at
least three The Paper Store locations, company officials said. The Paper Store
shared surveillance video Wednesday from their Framingham store of the man they
say is responsible for the thefts. "You'll see how brazen this gentleman is. The
associates are 20 feet away. He comes in and takes the whole rack, sticks it in
his coat," said owner John Anderson. Anderson's company said the man has also
hit stores in Dedham and West Roxbury.

Highland, IN: Brothers charged with stealing
$3,900 in electronics during brazen smash and grab from Highland Target
Documents filed in court allege the two walked into the Highland Target on
Indianapolis Boulevard at 9:14 p.m. March 12 and smashed a glass case near the
electronics counter of the retail store with a metal bar. When an employee
confronted him and asked what he was doing, Williams said, “Yeah, I’m stealing
this (expletive).” Police said he ran out of the store with three iPhones and
two other devices worth $3,900 in his arms. The Lake County prosecutor’s office
named 24-year-old Christopher L. Williams and 22-year-old Antonio K. Williams,
both of Chicago, in armed robbery charges filed this week in Lake Criminal
Court. Highland police allege in court papers the brothers also are suspects in
robberies earlier this month at numerous Target stores in Illinois as well.

Australia: Gold Coast woman arrested after police allegedly find $20k of stolen
goods at property
A Gold Coast woman was arrested yesterday after police searching her home found
stolen goods valued in excess of $20,000. The items, which were seized by
investigators, included nappies, baby formula, Nutribullets and electronic fry
pans alleged to have been stolen from local businesses. Police searched the
property in Willow Vale, a rural area on the Gold Coast, yesterday as part of
their investigations into an organized stealing syndicate. It’s believed the

Phoenix, AZ: Armed C-Store Burglar shot and
killed by Police
An armed suspect was shot and killed by a Phoenix police officer early Thursday
morning in Maryvale, according to police. Police say officers were in the area
of 51st Avenue and Indian School Road looking for suspects believed to be
involved in a reported burglary of a convenience store. The suspects had stolen
cigarettes and fled in the area.

An overnight robbery in the Frayser area has left one man dead, Memphis police
say. Police responded to a robbery call at the Stage Express convenience store
around 1:20 a.m. on Thursday, where they found a male store clerk who had been

people wanted on murder charges in a deadly Georgia shooting were arrested in
Mississippi on Monday night after they allegedly robbed a McDonald’s drive-thru
at gunpoint, stole an SUV and led authorities on a chase. Jaylen Benton, 18, of
Ellerslie, and Sharae Threadgill, 21, of Stone Mountain, are also suspected in
other armed robberies across Alabama and Mississippi, according to police in
Brandon, Mississippi, an eastern suburb of Jackson. Benton and Threadgill had
been on the run since early Sunday morning, when authorities said they were
involved in a botched armed robbery in Columbus, Georgia, in which 20-year-old
Phillip Whitaker was killed, Columbus police Sgt. Jeff Kraus said.

The guard saw a person in the store trying to steal a bottle and confronted the
young man. When the guard asked the suspect for an ID, he pulled out a gun and

A man being held for shoplifting by Bayonne Walmart security officers attempted
a bizarre escape through a crawl space in the ceiling, but he was quickly caught
by Bayonne Police. Matthew Ricciardi, 27, was charged with making terroristic
threats, robbery, criminal mischief, resisting arrest, possession of drug
paraphernalia and possession of a hypodermic syringe.

Police are asking for the public's help to bring down a crew of five people
accused of robbing six cellphone stores in Houston's southside in two weeks.
They targeted four Metro PCS stores, a Boost Mobile store and the final robbery
happened at the South Park Cell Store on Monday. Investigators said the
robberies are all similar -- the group storms into a store armed with weapons,
demanding cash and cellphones. Each of those robberies happened around 6 p.m.

Valley man plans to file a lawsuit against the City of Tempe after he was
arrested for a crime he didn't commit. "When I was initially arrested I was
thinking I was going to go home almost immediately, I was thinking I was
innocent, which I was," said Stephen Baker. But Baker didn't go home. In
February of last year, the 33-year-old was arrested in connection to an armed
robbery at a T-Mobile store in Tempe. Baker and two others were accused of
holding employees at gunpoint and stealing more than $18,000 in cell phones.
Baker pleaded with police that he was innocent, even though one of the victims
had identified him as one of the bandits. He spent 69 days in jail - unable to
afford to post bond.

Surveillance video released Wednesday shows a vehicle engulfed in flames being
driven towards the shop. At the last minute, the suspect jumps out of the driver
side window and steers the car toward the store. The suspect then appears to
throw an object at the car to further ignite the flames.

pistol-whipping Dollar General employee
In a two-day trial, assistant district attorneys explained to the jury that on
June 8, 2017, Griffin entered the Dollar General on McCalla Avenue brandishing a
handgun and demanding money. While the clerk was attempting to open the cash
drawer, Griffin bludgeoned the victim numerous times with the pistol before
leaving with the entire cash drawer. The DA's office said Griffin has eight
prior felony convictions for aggravated robbery, robbery, aggravated assault,
theft, evading arrest and unlawful possession of a weapon. Judge Scott Green set
the case for sentencing on May 3 where Griffin faces 40 to 60 years in prison
without the possibility of parole.

the plan you have to bring it to life and the execution everyone delivers to
give it a life. Because without the two the great idea never existed. As one "C"
level executive once told me- He never saw a bad great idea as it was always the
failed plan to roll it out and the poor execution that killed it.
