This survey was initiated because the popular narrative spread by outside interests and
repeated unquestioningly in the media ran counter to what our retailers
were seeing in their stores on a daily basis

cleared cases 2016 vs 2017. Since 2015, there is a 14% increase is case value

Tulsa area since 2015, and a 10% decrease in just the OKC area

There was a temporary decline in numbers in 2017, due to a shutting down of a
$3million/year stolen merchandise fencing operation in Oklahoma City in March of
2017 – NOT due to
State Question 780, which didn’t take effect until July of 2017!

UK: Fraud costs mount for convenience retail sector
Fraud cost the convenience retail sector £9 million in 2018 – equivalent to £194
per store in the UK, according to the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS)
trade body.
In the latest in a
raft of recent annual reports detailing the impact of crime on the retail sector,
the ACS’s review which was published this week indicated that counterfeit notes
are the most prevalent type of fraud facing convenience chains up and down the
UK.
The overall impact of all types of crime on the convenience sector was estimated
to be £246 million, with retailers most concerned about violence against staff,
theft by customers, and verbal abuse from the public.
On average, each store in the UK spends £4,080 on crime prevention measures per
year, with CCTV, external security and cash handling & storage the top areas of
investment in this space. Earlier this month,
the Co-op revealed a new in-store security measure involving a forensic
fogging system that it says can help authorities trace criminals.

Charlotte, NC: Harris Teeter store drops traditional checkout lines,
switching completely to self checkout
The grocery retailer’s uptown store is moving completely to self check-out as
its looks to eliminate long lines at its registers and move customers in and out
more quickly, reported The Charlotte Observer. At some 18,000 sq. ft., the store
is nearly half the size of a traditional Harris Teeter, and the average
transaction is also significantly smaller, according to the report.
Throughout Charlotte, a number of retailers have self-checkout kiosks at their
stores, including Target, CVS, Publix and Walmart. The uptown Harris Teeter
is the only known retailer in the region to transition to completely self
checkout, though.
Automated checkout has grown increasingly popular among large retailers in the
U.S., especially in the low-margin grocery-store industry. It’s a way retailers
look to speed up transactions and ultimately to increase the number of sales at
their stores.
Sales of self-checkout terminals soared 67 percent in 2016, marking a “breakout
year” for the industry, according to a July 2017 report from RBR, a London firm
that studies banking and retail automation. The surge was driven by “U.S.
retailers in particular investing heavily in transforming their stores,” RBR
said.

Offering a single ‘view of inventory across
the brands’
The new system being rolled out at U.S. chains owned by Dutch retailer
Koninklijke Ahold Delhaize NV is intended to improve how buyers predict demand
and get perishables and other products to store shelves faster.
The technology provides “one logical view of inventory across the brands,”
allowing buyers to aggregate demand across thousands of stores, said Chris
Lewis, executive vice president of supply chain at Retail Business Services LLC,
Ahold’s U.S. business services company.

Walmart and the Push to Put Workers on Company Boards
Longtime Walmart employee Cynthia Murray, with the help of a worker’s-rights
organization called United for Respect, plans to present a resolution to
Congress this week - and, later, at Walmart’s annual shareholders’ meeting -
urging the company to place a significant number of hourly retail employees on
its board of directors so that they might have input on major corporate
decisions.
Placing workers on a company’s board has never been a common practice in the
United States. But with widening income and wealth inequality, and an economic
recovery that has not brought significant increases in wages to average workers,
experts are starting to look farther afield for possible ways to alleviate the
disparity.
Several shocking recent statistics have helped underscore the idea that the way
that the rewards of the economy are being distributed is badly off balance.
Between 2008 and 2017, the largest American companies spent more than ninety per
cent of their corporate profits on stock buybacks and dividends, which primarily
serve to drive up stock prices and enrich shareholders. A recent
analysis in the Wall Street Journal showed that the median pay for a C.E.O.
of an S. & P. 500 company rose to a million dollars per month in 2018, driven by
tax cuts and healthy corporate profits, while the average worker’s wages grew by
just three and a half per cent. The ratio of what the average chief executive
and the average worker are paid sits at approximately two hundred and
seventy-three to one.

Comparably.com has ranked the top 50 big and small companies with the brightest
futures as determined by their own workers. Costco, which came in seventh on the

Multiple prospective buyers have considered bids for Bed Bath & Beyond in recent
years, but none has followed through as the chain has failed to create a clear

Bipartisan House bill would fix GOP tax law's 'retail glitch'
A bipartisan group of House members on Tuesday offered legislation to fix a
portion of President Trump's 2017 tax law that is hurting retailers and
restaurants. The bill — introduced by House Ways and Means Committee members
Jimmy Panetta (D-Calif.) and Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.) — would fix a portion of
the GOP tax law known as the "retail glitch" that pertains to the time frame in
which stores and restaurants can deduct the costs of their renovations.

Judge says iPhone sales should be banned in U.S.
MaryJoan McNamara, an International Trade Commission judge, said sales of
Apple’s iPhones should be banned in the U.S. after finding the tech giant had

Federal Drug Task Force Arrests 61 in $7 Million Dark Net Opioid Bust
Members of the Joint Criminal Opioid and Darknet Enforcement (J-CODE) team
announce the results of Operation SaboTor, a coordinated international effort
targeting drug trafficking organizations operating on the Darknet. This is J-CODE’s
second coordinated action and follows the success of last year’s Operation
Disarray.
As a result of Operation SaboTor, U.S. and international law enforcement
agencies made 61 arrests and shut down 50 Darknet accounts used for illegal
activity. Law enforcement executed 65 search warrants, seizing 299.5 kilograms
of drugs, 51 firearms, and more than $7 million ($4.5 million in cryptocurrency,
$2.48 million in cash, and $40,000 in gold). They also conducted 122 interviews.
In addition, participating agencies engaged in public education efforts
regarding the dangers of opioid abuse during the operation.

Hackers abuse Magento PayPal integration to test validity of stolen credit cards

Hacker groups and online fraudsters are abusing a feature of
Magento online shops
to test the validity of stolen debit and credit card numbers, ZDNet has learned.
The technique consists of attackers attempting hundreds of $0 transactions with
stolen payment cards to check a card's validity. The transactions are executed
against Magento stores that support the PayPal Payflow Pro integration.
The PayPal Payflow Pro integration is a payment option available on Magento
shops that allows an online store to process card transactions via a PayPal
merchant (business) account.
It is believed that hackers are buying these cards from so-called "carding
forums" -- underground cybercrime forums where hackers and ATM skimming groups
are putting card details up for sale.

Europol Teams up with Industry Experts to Combat Phishing
From 26 March to 27 March, Europol hosted a joint meeting of the EC3 Advisory
Groups on Financial Services, Internet Security and Communication Providers,
gathering 70 industry representatives to discuss the cyber-threat of phishing.
Steven Wilson, Head of the European Cybercrime Centre, said:
“Phishing
is the engine and enabler of many cybercrimes,
and can be used to cause significant harm to European citizens and their
organisations. Only by working closely and across key industries with some of

Lack of security skills exposing business to attack
More than half (52%) of respondents to a social media poll by Infosecurity
Europe 2019 believe the skills shortage puts their business at increased risk of
cyber attacks.
A lack of skills is cited as the biggest challenge to recruiting cyber and
information security talent by almost a third (30%) of respondents, followed by
lack of recruitment budget (27%) and lack of interest in careers within the

New
Loss Prevention Officers and Police Officers Will Be Stationed at Stores
Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries is rolling out new security measures to try to curb
the growing number of thefts and robberies in its stores. The Crown corporation
unveiled a multi-point theft reduction plan Thursday morning.
"Individuals who take alcohol products without paying have become increasingly
brazen and unpredictable when confronted," Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries president
and CEO Peter Hak said in a news release. "We want our customers and our
employees to know that we take their safety seriously and we also want to send
the message that if you steal from a Liquor Mart, you will be caught."
Liquor & Lotteries' security push will put new loss prevention officers —
trained to catch thieves after they've left stores, using citizens' powers of
arrest to hold them until police arrive — in stores during peak theft times.
Uniformed special duty constables from the Winnipeg Police Service also will be
stationed in some stores, Harrison said.
Liquor & Lotteries has been working with police over the last few months and 113
arrests have been made since last October with help from police and the MLL's
high-resolution digital surveillance systems, he said.
Liquor & Lotteries' new security efforts also include:
• Checking some customers' IDs at
the front door, and denying entrance to those without ID.
• Bottle locks, alarm pedestals and
lockable shelf cases.
• Making some high-value targeted
products available only by request.
Harrison said Liquor & Lotteries also will consider adding further security
staff, enhanced surveillance and additional physical barriers, such as
controlled entrances and exits to stores.

Retail and marketing expert Fang Wan from the University of Manitoba says these
measures will have a negative effect on the shopping experience.

Liquor Depot chain in Alberta cracking down after ‘dramatic’ spike in thefts
The company has hired two full-time members called organized retail crime
investigators, to help police gather information and track patterns of
theft, as well as perform undercover sting operations at the stores. The program
has been running in Edmonton since November 2018 and has already made arrests
involving the theft of products worth $5,000 to $20,000. The company plans on
expanding the program to stores in Calgary in April.

Curbing meth-fuelled crime requires treatment, but options limited
Gripped by addiction, a 25-year-old Winnipeg mother saw an opportunity on local
liquor store shelves last year to feed her growing urge for a fix — not
for alcohol, but for meth. Over the course of about six months in 2018, the
woman pilfered about $3,700 worth of liquor on 18 occasions, and stole clothing
from three retail outlets.
She would turn around and sell the liquor on sites like Kijiji as a means of
making some quick cash to support her growing methamphetamine addiction. The
thefts, her lawyer says, "were for exactly what they look like they're for:
for resale to try and support that habit."
Hers is an increasingly common example of meth-fuelled property crime in
Winnipeg. Between 2017 and 2018, Manitoba's Liquor Marts saw a 300 per cent jump
in thefts, and police have blamed meth for a spike in crime that's straining
their resources. The crime problem, though, won't be addressed until the
addictions problem is dealt with, say justice and community workers.

RCMP to online sellers: beware of phony purchases
March is Fraud Prevention Month, and NWT RCMP are reminding residents to remain
vigilant against online scams in light of a spike in “attempted mass marketing
frauds over online classified ads” in the territory.
Online sellers should be wary of potential out-of-town buyers who offer to
purchase items without seeing them first. In a particular type of online “spoof”
scammers will send sellers a phony PayPal email message or a notification of a
money transfer, which falsely tells the seller the payment is pending – but no
funds are available.

'Absolute disaster': Thrift shop a total loss after car crashes through window,
setting store ablaze
Only
ashes and a heavily damaged building remain from the Goodwill Store on Pembina
Highway after it went up in flames when a car crashed through its front window
Tuesday morning.
At the time of the crash, three staff members and three customers were inside,
but managed to escape before emergency crews arrived. For the time being, the
staff at the store will be relocated to one of the other four Goodwill Stores
across the city. The crash happened around 11:15 a.m. after two vehicles
collided and one rammed through the front of the Goodwill, according to Winnipeg
police.

Winnipeg, MB: Foot Locker employee stabbed in the neck while trying to
stop shoplifter
 A young man working at one of Winnipeg's busiest shopping
centres was stabbed in the neck while trying to stop a shoplifter on
Thursday evening, witnesses say. The employee was working at the Foot
Locker store on the second floor of Polo Park mall when he confronted a
17-year-old boy trying to steal several articles of clothing, according
to police. Winnipeg police spokesperson Const. Rob Carver says people
should never intervene in a crime unless they think someone is at risk.
He says the suspect could be high on methamphetamine, which may make
them more aggressive.

Windsor, ON: Suspect still on the loose after six straight c-store robberies
Windsor police believe a man responsible for a string of convenience store
robberies struck again on Wednesday morning — the sixth incident of its kind
this month. Patrol officers responded around 7:20 a.m. to the Circle K store.
The employee told police that a man wearing a black ski mask had entered the
business and demanded money. It’s the third time in the past three weeks that
this particular store has been robbed in this manner.

Calgary, AB: Man sought in $13,000 jewelry theft at Market Mall
 Calgary police are working to identify a suspect who
allegedly stole over $13,000 worth of jewelry from a store in a
northwest shopping mall. Investigators say a man entered Paris Jewellers
inside Market Mall on February 10 and reportedly removed a number of
pieces of jewelry, valued at over $13,000, from an unlocked showcase and
left the store. Police say the incident took place between 5:30 p.m. and
6:30 p.m.

Brushing Scam: Mysterious packages from Amazon
showing up at people's homes
Imagine gifts from Amazon just showing up at your house from strangers. At
first, it might seem like your lucky day. But, when the packages keep coming,
often with items you really have no interest in, you’d probably start to wonder,
or worry.
E-Commerce experts say, that suggests it's part of a scam called ‘Brushing’.
Vendors, often overseas, pay someone to use gift cards to buy merchandise, then
ship it to a real person. Once it arrives, the phantom buyer, sometimes the
vendor itself, writes a glowing review on Amazon or other E-Commerce sites.
Retail Security expert, Brian Kilcourse said, "The ultimate motivation is to get
a good review for the product on to Amazon. And the more positive reviews you
get, the more likely you-- you're going to get sales of that products."
But it could deliver problems for consumers, like Kelly and Mike, when they get
what seems like innocent freebies. Because it means someone has your name and
mailing address, possibly even your phone number. And depending how they got
your info, they could have a lot more personal information, like your credit
card number.
Amazon says it's found few fake reviews associated with these shipments, “but
will ban all vendors and reviewers who abuse the system." In fact, Amazon sued
more than 1,100 people accused of posting fake reviews.

to 6 State/$360,000 Walmart theft spree gets 3 years Probation
One of three Twin Cities residents accused of operating an Organized Retail
theft ring at Walmart stores in six states will spend three years on probation.
The trio took nearly $47,000 in merchandise from the Eau Claire Walmart store on
two occasions in fall 2017, police said. They are responsible for more than
$360,000 in losses from several Walmart stores, police said. Tashanda J. Boclair,
32, pleaded guilty recently in Eau Claire County Court to a felony count of
retail theft. Judge Sarah Harless fined Boclair $6,730 and ordered her to pay
$39,843 in restitution along with her two co-defendants.

Baton Rouge, LA: 3 arrested for stealing over
$100K in iPhones from Best Buy on Bluebonnet
Three men are accused of breaking into a Best Buy in Baton Rouge and stealing
almost 120 iPhones. Deputies say they responded to a burglary alarm at the Best
Buy shortly after 11 p.m. on Mar. 25. The responding deputy reviewed the store’s
surveillance footage with a Best Buy employee, which showed the suspects,
wearing dark colored hooded sweatshirts, prying open the store’s side security
door and breaking into the cell phone cabinet. The suspects then filled a trash
can with the iPhones, according to arrest reports. Investigators learned
similar burglaries had been reported at stores in Texas, Lake Charles, and
Mobile and started to search motels and hotels in the Baton Rouge area.
Deputies located a vehicle matching the description from the burglary at the
Residence Inn Motel.

Georgetown, KY: $25,000 of stolen merchandise
recovered during Police raid
Georgetown police say a stolen property investigation resulted in a man's arrest
and $25,000 in recovered merchandise. Police say officers worked with Cynthiana
police using a mutual agreement to conduct a search warrant at the home of
Steven Price. This comes after police had already recovered $4,630 in stolen
property and five grams of methamphetamine. Officers say they found an
additional $20,000 in stolen property and six additional grams of
methamphetamine following a search of the Cynthiana home.

Laredo, TX: Police make final arrest in alleged
$15K perfume heist at Mall Del Norte
Ray Anthony Garza, 20, was arrested on Saturday and charged with theft.
Authorities first arrested Jorge Andres Bernal, 24, on Feb. 22, on the same
charge. Police said that three thefts were reported at La Perfumeria at Mall Del
Norte. Two men entered the kiosk after closing hours and removed perfumes and
colognes. LPD said they stole 314 different fragrances valued at about
$15,864.36. They allegedly confessed to stealing the perfumes and colognes and
selling them out on the street.

Dartmouth, MA: Police Searching for Interstate
Shoplifting Suspects
Dartmouth Police are seeking to identify three suspects believed to be involved
in multiple shoplifting incidents across state lines. Police provided
surveillance photos of three individuals responsible for shoplifting
approximately $2,500 worth of electronics from the Best Buy in Dartmouth on
Saturday. According to police the individuals are also believed to have
shoplifted from a Newington, New Hampshire Best Buy location the following day.

Conway, SC: Man arrested in Tabor City, NC in
connection with 2018 Food Lion murder case
A second person has been arrested in connection to a murder at a Longs Food Lion
back in August 2018, according to Horry County Police Department. Police say the
U.S. Marshals Task Force arrested Stephon Miller on Lewis Street in Tabor City
Monday. Miller is being held at Columbus County Detention Center on a fugitive
of justice warrant and is awaiting extradition back to South Carolina where he
will face a murder charge, HCPD says. On Aug. 15, 2018, Gerard Celentano, 57,
was shot and killed outside of the grocery store at 110 E. Highway 9. Detectives
were able to obtain information that led to Miller’s identification in
connection with the incident, police say.

Store Manger collapses confronting shoplifter, Customer and Police
save a life
A
store manager credits one his customers and two Kent police officers with saving
his life after he went into cardiac arrest following a confrontation earlier
this month with a suspected shoplifter that was caught on camera. "It is the
highest level of humanity,” said Devinder Pal Singh, who is now recovering at
home following surgery. Surveillance video from a 7-Eleven on Kent-Kangley Road
shows a 22-year-old man, who Kent police called a “prolific” shoplifter, inside
the store around 5:30 a.m. The clerk and suspected shoplifter tussle, knocking
over display cases. The man is able to break free and leave the store. Singh,
still on the phone, then collapsed and went into cardiac arrest. Surveillance
video shows a woman who begins performing CPR on him. Surveillance video shows
Officer Jeremiah Johnson rush into the 7-Eleven with an AED, followed by Officer
Doug Westcott, who both take over CPR from the customer.

Kyle, TX: Suspect cuts hole in roof of Target,
arrested in 'Mission Impossible'
style burglary
According to the Kyle Police Department on Tuesday, officers responded to the
Target after an overnight video monitoring system reported that a male subject
was actively burglarizing the store. When officers arrived, police said they
found Dustin Ammons, 37, "making a poor attempt to hide behind a rack in the
shoe department." He was then arrested without incident.

stains across Walgreens

A man was arrested after he broke into a Walgreens off Hawthorne Ave. in Athens
on Sunday. It happened at around 1:08 a.m. Athens-Clarke County Police were
called to the store for an attempted burglary. The suspect was detained inside
of the store and identified as Edward Wessinger. Officials said Wessinger had
multiple cuts and scrapes on his hand that were bleeding. When officers searched
him, they said they found a screwdriver and a lot of cigarette packets covered
in blood in his possession.

Aaris D. Payne, 25, was indicted Tuesday by a Franklin County grand jury on 18

prison for Dollar General robbery
Jalen Xavier Simmons, 19, pleaded guilty Dec. 17 to one count of robbery and one
count of brandishing a firearm during the crime of violence, U.S. Attorney Mike
Hurst said in a news release. He was sentenced Friday, Hurst said. Because
Simmons was arrested as part of Project EJECT, an initiative by the U.S.
Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Mississippi under the U.S.

Active listening is absolutely critical if you really expect to influence change

or expect to do virtually anything. And hearing what they're saying is not
simply hearing the words it's all about hearing the meaning and the intentions
behind the words. Because words have a tendency to hide the true meanings and
beliefs. As truth is often cloaked in humor so is meaning hidden in words. With
the number one obstacle being one's self hearing is often drown out by how we
want others to view us. So if you can leave your self at the door so to speak
you can then begin to focus on hearing what they're saying.
