Today announced the addition of seasoned security professionals to its intelligence team. Tommy McDowell will lead the Retail ISAC as senior director, Harpreet Kalra and Muktar Kelati will join as senior analysts and Ryan Smith will be intelligence support manager.

Bad actors are continually expanding their resources and increasing their attacks on retail companies, especially as more companies adopt new technologies in the digital age. Ex-Equifax CIO's insider trading indictment a red flag for IT execs
Ying's indictment should serve as further example of the gravity of data breaches and how companies' corporate culture plays a big role in proper breach response, experts said.

"Insider trading is insider trading -- others should remember that if they violate this law, they will be held to account," TCE Strategy CEO and cybersecurity expert Bryce Austin said. "They need to act accordingly -- data breaches have real potential losses to an organization."

As the Equifax CIO of U.S. information solutions at the time of the breach, Ying learned information that helped him determine that Equifax was the victim of the large data breach before the breach was made public, according to the Department of Justice.

"It's definitely something regulators are looking out for -- breaches have become common enough that one of the first activities of outside parties is to view the impact of the breach on the stock," Forrester Research analyst Jeff Pollard said.

Organizations that pride themselves on being transparent with customers have learned that a rapid breach response that focuses on the victims -- customers and employees -- helps mitigate negative fallout when a hack occurs, Pollard added.

"You can learn quite a bit about how a company functions on the inside by how it responds to a breach," Pollard said. "Any culture that promotes an atmosphere of 'we win together but lose as an individual' is not going to do a good job of handling a breach; those cultures want scapegoats."

Austin agreed, noting that while he is happy federal regulators are conducting their due diligence on the Equifax breach, Ying's violations should also be judged as a reflection of Equifax's overall operations.

"I'm more frustrated with the lack of overall accountability of Equifax as an organization," Austin said. "It would not surprise me if more indictments were to come."

Both Austin and Pollard said that while they had never heard of an IT executive being charged with insider trading following a data breach, they are convinced smaller scale incidents like it have occurred in the past.

As a result, the charges against the former Equifax CIO could serve as a precedent -- and a warning -- for other modern, tech-centric companies. techtarget.com

Alex Stamos, the chief information security officer at Facebook, plans to leave the company in August amid turmoil and disputes at the top levels of the company over disclosing details in nation-state abuse of the social media platform as well as other issues, according to a report in The New York Times.

In December, Stamos' daily duties were assigned to other Facebook managers, and his security team of 120 is now down to three people. The security team was moved to the product and infrastructure divisions, the report said. All 740 Toys “R” Us stores in the U.S. are set to close but there is hope for a deal that would preserve Canadian operations. The company has 82 stores across Canada.

“Toys ‘R’ Us Canada’s business is managed in Canada, operates autonomously from U.S. operations, and continues to be a stable and profitable market leader in Canada,” according to a statement from the company, issued on the same day its U.S. parent appeared in court seeking to close all remaining 735 U.S. stores no later than July 31, putting some 30,000 people out of work.

The company is looking at a transaction that would combine up to 200 of the top-performing U.S. stores and Canadian operations, according to documents filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court on Thursday. As part of the deal, the U.S. parent would sell 100 per cent of its equity interest in Toys “R” Us (Canada) Ltd. Consumer trust in grocers tumbles after bread-price-fixing scheme: study Loblaws hit hardest; Trust falls by 10%
Consumers have less faith in food retailers today than before Loblaw Cos. Ltd. disclosed it had been part of what it called an industrywide conspiracy to fix the price of bread, a study shows.

Consumer trust in Loblaw, the country's largest supermarket retailer, tumbled by 10 per cent while overall trust in grocery chains dropped 6.31 per cent, the study by Dalhousie University's faculty of management says.

Sobeys Inc., the second-largest grocer in Canada, saw consumer trust in it rise a little, by 1.6 per cent, the study found. Halton, ON: Store thief nearly hits several people with car to evade arrest
Halton police are looking a man who is accused of nearly striking several people with a vehicle in an effort to evade arrest. Police say a man stole $800 worth of merchandise from a store on Steeles Ave. East in Milton. Security staff stopped the man and told him he was under arrest for theft. Police say the man ran into a vehicle in the parking lot when he saw officers arriving on scene.

“The male then drove at officers and pedestrians in the parking lot in a dangerous manner. He drove away in a stolen 2017 Chevrolet Malibu,” said Halton police in a news release. He is wanted on several charges including theft under $5,000, resist arrest, escape lawful custody, and dangerous driving. chch.com

Nanaimo, BC: Meat cleaver pulled during robbery at liquor store
A Nanaimo woman with a criminal record spanning nearly 10 years is back in custody for allegedly pulling a meat cleaver during a robbery. RCMP said Angelina Emma Beans, 31, was arrested after allegedly stealing alcohol from the Quarterway Liquor Store on Bowen Rd. around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14. Police said Beans pulled the meat cleaver when she was confronted by staff about the alleged theft. She then took off with a man, only to be found by Mounties a short time later. Retailers Face "Returns Tsunami" as Try-Before-You-Buy Trend Intensifies
A new report released today highlights the hidden dangers to retail stemming from online businesses, such as Amazon's new Prime Wardrobe, Trunk Club, Stitch Fix, Warby Parker, and ASOS, which have introduced Try Before You Buy (TBYB) options for customers. The trend is threatening to overwhelm retailers – many of which are already reaching crisis point – with a huge surge of intentional returns that may undermine profits.

25% of retailers globally will adopt online TBYB by 2019, but the majority are unprepared for surge of returns that could QUADRUPLE return costs for US retailers.

US shoppers offered TBYB would purchase on average five extra items each month (but 87% would return up to seven purchases).

40+% of retailers have seen increased 'intentional returns' in the past year (customers ordering multiple items because returns are free or cheap).

Almost two thirds of US retailers are not deploying technology solutions to process returns.

The TBYB option enables customers to order multiple items before deciding what they'd like to keep. There is no up-front cost; shoppers simply pay for items they keep after a certain number of days – usually 30 days. They return unwanted items and are never charged. Online Retailers Set to Bear Brunt of GDPR
On May 25, 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will go into effect in the European Union and businesses all over the world will need to be ready. The new requirements will hit online retailers especially hard, according to recent research by software giant Sage. One out of every three adults in the EU plans to exercise the right granted by the GDPR to remove personal data from the databases of online retailers and to request that their data stop being used for marketing purposes. Nearly half will make the same request of social media companies.

Consumers must now give companies explicit “opt-in” consent to have their information stored and used for marketing as well as the legal right to ask any business anywhere in the world how, why and where their data is being used. Non-compliance can result in fines up to 20 million euros ($24.6 million) or 4 percent of global turnover. Sage found that more than half of organizations (56 percent) are not clear on these consequences. Eyewear Website Operator Admits Guilt in Online Fraud, Again
An eyewear website operator who already served several years in prison after making violent threats to unhappy consumers across the U.S. pleaded guilty to new charges on Tuesday, admitting that he committed more online fraud after he was freed.

Vitaly Borker, 41, entered the guilty plea to fraud and conspiracy charges in Manhattan federal court before Judge Paul G. Gardephe.

A sentencing date was set for May, but Gardephe said it was more likely that the date would be used for a hearing to resolve disputes over the extent of Borker's latest fraud through a company called OpticsFast.

In the new case, prosecutors did not allege that Borker made violent threats but they said he continued peddling shoddy glasses as premium ware. usnews.com

Detroit, MI: Store Owner Pleads Guilty To $2M Food Fraud
A Detroit store owner has pleaded guilty to stealing $2 million from a government food program for mothers and children. Haidar Aoun admits that he paid cash to people in exchange for more lucrative swipes of their electronic debit-style cards. He was subsequently paid by the government. Aoun pleaded guilty Tuesday to conspiracy to commit fraud and likely faces 41 months to 51 months in federal prison. His plea agreement says the fraud lasted eight years at Lonyo Market in Detroit. The agreement says Aoun owes the government nearly $2.3 million, which includes restitution for food stamp fraud, Medicaid fraud and Pell grant fraud. cbslocal.com

Utah court records show three people have pleaded guilty to charges related to the theft of more than $500,000 in underwear and other merchandise from Victoria's Secret stores in Las Vegas. Records show William Orlando Pinzon Galindo and Francisco Ugarte Garcia pleaded guilty to receiving stolen property, while Omaira Reina-Martinez pleaded guilty to that charge and having a fake ID. The Deseret News in Salt Lake City reported Monday that the three were pulled over for speeding on a Utah highway in January. Two Washington County men took just six minutes to steal almost $6,000 worth of merchandise from a Walmart store near Blairsville. Folsom Police have arrested two men in connection to a string of thefts where $5,000 worth of Plan B pills and beauty supplies were taken. Vernon Posey, 24, and Travon Adkins, 25, were arrested after officers worked with an alert Walgreens loss prevention employee Monday night. According to police, the men allegedly opened security cases and took medication and beauty products from Walgreens in Folsom before hitting two other stores. Jill Kenzy pleaded guilty last week in state court in Pierre to stealing $1,084 worth of goods, including a TV and two vacuum cleaners, paying only a fraction of the real price by using a tricky move at the self-check-out lane. Kenzy, 35, told Judge Mark Barnett she was able to do a kind of bait-and-switch when ringing up the items by swapping the bar-code sticker indicating a lower-cost item for a more expensive piece of merchandise. Princeton, NJ: Gunman Dead As 5-Hour Standoff At Panera Bread Ends
A gunman is dead after a nearly 5-hour standoff at a Princeton Panera Bread Tuesday, ending an ordeal that led to evacuations at Princeton University and neighboring buildings as well as a shelter-in-place at nearby schools. The state Attorney General's Office confirmed that the unidentified gunman was shot dead by police after hours of negotiations. The gunman has not been identified pending the notification of family members. The Attorney General's Shooting Response Team is investigating the circumstances of the shooting.
