The U.S. Crime Surge
The Retail Impact

Manhattan, We Have a (Theft) Problem
Op-Ed: The aspirin is locked up; the shoplifters go free

What has it come to when the cops have to warn shoppers to beware, and when the merchandise is locked up but not the shoplifters?

Welcome to shopping in the heart of Manhattan in 2022. Retail theft is rampant, both of shampoo at drugstores and of clothing, jewelry and handbags at upscale shops. Theft is “100% worse” than two years ago, supermarket owner John Catsimatidis tells me; instead of a package of baloney and a loaf of bread, “people come in and steal $300, $400 worth of product” for resale. His answer is to put fewer packages of meat (a favorite target of thieves) on the shelves and to hire dozens of security guards for his 30 Gristedes and d’Agostino stores.

Rothmans, the iconic men’s store, was robbed twice in December, as organized crews of criminals stormed inside, assaulted an employee and grabbed thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. Owner Ken Giddon has criticized bail reform and the failure to prosecute perpetrators for enabling criminals to rob his store, get arrested and come back days later to do it again — a situation that “tears at the fabric of the city.”

Giddon has been tapped by Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg to be the co-chair of a Manhattan small business alliance that includes businesspeople, neighborhood leaders and DA office staff. This is the same DA whose day one memo instructed his prosecutors to downgrade many felony charges and whenever possible to recommend “diversion” for perpetrators instead of jail. According to NYPD stats, the increases in theft and robbery for the first 10 weeks of 2022 vs. 2021 are staggering: petit larceny up 33%, robbery up 45% and grand larceny up 65%.

The alliance is supposed to make recommendations for reducing shoplifting and robberies by May, but what’s the delay?

The ramifications of unchecked retail theft go far beyond inconvenience for buyers of aspirin: Small business owners losing the stores they took careers to build, employees losing their jobs, the public losing confidence that city leaders are capable of dealing with disorder and crime. Shoplifting, after all, is not only an economic crime, it’s also the sort of in-your-face offense that makes city dwellers question whether the manifold charms of Manhattan are worth the hassles.

Bragg insists that the scourge of retail crime is a priority, along with gun violence and domestic violence. If so, why do we need the recommendations of an unwieldy 36-member small business alliance when it’s clear what to do today? nydailynews.com

Largest Shopping Mall in New York Plagued by Crime
Destiny USA, Syracuse police pledge to address gun crime at mall
Syracuse police and Destiny USA officials pledged to address gun crime at the mall after a Friday meeting between the two but offered few details on how they’d do that. The Syracuse Police Department will station one more marked car outside the mall and Destiny USA will add more unarmed security guards, the organizations said in a joint Friday night news statement.

In the statement, Police Chief Kenton Buckner said the property’s safety is “ultimately the responsibility of the property owner.” Mayor Ben Walsh attributed the recent crime to a larger “societal challenge we must confront together.”

Walsh called for the meeting between cops and Destiny executives following the latest shooting at the mall March 5, when a gunshot fired during a fight shattered a store window. Walsh emphasized this week that security at the mall is the responsibility of its private owners. But Syracuse officials also sought to help coordinate security because the private mall property is Central New York’s largest gathering place. Destiny USA, the sixth largest mall in America, typically draws 26 million visitors a year.

The recent spate of gun violence at Destiny – three shootings plus an armed robbery -- represents a tiny fraction of Syracuse gun crime. The only other shooting at Destiny occurred on Black Friday in 2019, when a man was shot during a scuffle near the food court. That incident, too, prompted city officials to meet with mall representatives.

In addition to the mall’s private security personnel, who are not armed, Destiny employs off-duty Syracuse police officers. There are typically between two and eight Syracuse cops working at the mall at various times, Malinowski said.

The number of violent crimes reported at the mall has held steady since 2016, ranging between 13 and 20 per year. There were 15 in 2021. Walsh said the gun violence that has troubled Destiny is part of a national trend. syracuse.com cnycentral.com

Crime Surge Impact? VA Lifts Ban on Facial Recognition Tech
Virginia lawmakers OK lifting ban on use of facial recognition tech by local police
Last year, Virginia lawmakers passed one of the most restrictive bans in the country on the use of facial recognition technology, barring local police departments and campus police from purchasing or using the technology unless explicitly authorized by the legislature.

On Thursday, just eight months after the ban took effect, lawmakers approved a bill to lift the blanket ban. The legislation would allow police agencies to use the technology in certain circumstances, including to help identify an individual when they have reasonable suspicion that the person committed a crime. Under the bill, facial recognition also could be used for a variety of other uses, including to help identify crime victims or witnesses, sex trafficking victims and unidentified bodies in morgues.

The legislation explicitly bars the use of facial recognition for surveillance or monitoring. Cities and states around the country moved to limit its use after some law enforcement agencies applied facial recognition technology to images taken from street cameras during racial justice demonstrations in 2021 and used those to make arrests in some cases.

Several lawmakers said they viewed the ban passed last year as a temporary measure to allow the legislature to evaluate facial recognition technology. Democratic Sen. Scott Surovell, whose bill was approved Thursday, said the technology — when used with appropriate restrictions — can be an important investigatory tool for police.

I think it will help police not only solve, but prosecute crime more efficiently,” said Surovell. pilotonline.com

The Crime-Inflation Connection
Rising gas prices correlate with reports of rising gas theft, experts say
With gas prices soaring, experts say it's not surprising to see gas being stolen. In some cases thieves are stealing at the pump, often using stolen credit cards or getting it from the underground tanks.

Other times, they steal directly from cars by siphoning it out or drilling a hole in the tank.

AAA said gas theft has become more common around the country. They suggest parking in a garage if you have one to avoid gas being stolen from your car at home. Away from home, they suggest parking in a well-lit area with high traffic, and when in a public garage parking near an exit or elevator where there is more foot traffic.

Criminologists say there's a correlation between inflation and crime in general: "As we shift the economic reality, I predict crime is going to go up. It's going to be more serious," said Alex Del Carmen, PhD, criminologist at Tarleton State University.

AAA predicts gas prices will remain unstable, which means gas will continue to be a target for thieves. abc7chicago.com

COVID Cases, Hospitalizations and Deaths Continue to Plummet

Just When We Thought We Turned a Corner - Is Another Surge Coming?
As COVID-19 cases rise again in Europe, could United States see the same?
Just as the U.S. has finally turned the corner on a wave of COVID-19 cases caused by the omicron variant, multiple countries in Europe are showing an increase in infections – fueling concerns about the possibility of another global surge.

The United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Italy were among those that saw an upswing in cases this past week, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Among the countries whose data has charted an increased in cases, some have also seen a rise in hospitalizations, including Ireland, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

"A wave in Europe and other countries for that matter, might occur in the United States as well," Omenka told USA TODAY. "Because it is an infectious disease, unless we eradicate it, there is bound to be that possibility of its return ... As the virus variants have shown, even the possible return is not predictable in terms of its severity or degree of similarity to the previous forms." usatoday.com

What's Driving the COVID Era 'Great Resignation'?
Why U.S. Frontline Workers Are Quitting
There are 11 million unfilled jobs in the United States today, the vast majority of which are tied to a specific location and cannot be performed remotely with an appropriate home office setup. These “deskless” jobs, as we term them, are mostly in professions and trades such as health care, hospitality and leisure, retail, manufacturing, and transportation and warehousing. Desperate to recruit and retain workers, businesses have already raised wages for deskless workers 7% to 10% since the Covid-19 pandemic began, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. But wage increases have not been sufficient to win back frontline talent.

The solution could be improving managers’ relationship with frontline workers. Boston Consulting Group researchers found last year in a survey of hourly U.S. workers in the retail, distribution, travel, and food service industries that while compensation and Covid 19-related reasons were the biggest reasons for turnover, next on the list was a bad relationship with their boss.

Frontline managers have always been a crucial and underappreciated group, and their job has become even more critical — and challenging — during the pandemic. In fact, many of the other reasons for quitting (jobs aren’t enjoyable or interesting, the work schedule isn’t sufficiently flexible or predictable, and feeling inadequately appreciated) are also driven by the boss. Workers look to their managers for stability, empathy, and support — especially during these times when staff schedules, work responsibilities, and personal stresses have never been more difficult to manage. When managers are stressed or struggling, their team members usually are impacted, either directly or indirectly, and are unlikely to feel well supported. This loosens the ties that bind people to an organization, and they seek to leave. hbr.org

COVID Is Fading: The Retail Impact
Costco to end senior hours, COVID operating hours for healthcare workers and first responders
Costco will soon drop its senior hours after holding them for more than two years amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The special operating hours will be in place until April 17 for members 60 and older, healthcare workers and first responders, the wholesale club said Monday in an update on its COVID updates webpage. The hours have also been for members with disabilities or those who are immunocompromised.

Like many of the nation's grocery stores, Costco started holding the hours in March 2020 to help those the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considered the most vulnerable and at-risk for COVID-19. usatoday.com

Better Late Than Never As America Sheds Masks
Apple's Face ID now works while wearing a mask. But it's a little too late.
This week, Apple is rolling out a new iPhone feature that would've been incredibly useful two years ago: an update to Face ID that makes it possible to use while wearing a mask.

The mask-compatible Face ID is likely to generate the most buzz, given how much of a nuisance it’s been to use the iPhone's facial recognition feature to unlock the device in public over the last two years. Apple notes that the new, mask-friendly Face ID might be less secure than a full facial scan.

The rollout of a mask-friendly Face ID feature comes almost too late, as remaining blue states discard their mask mandates. However, the feature is still likely to be a welcome change — the federal government just extended the mask mandate for air travel another month, for example, while many doctors' offices nationwide still require masks. protocol.com

Massive Retail Response to Russia's Invasion
How retailers are reacting to the invasion of Ukraine

As companies halt shipments to Russia and shut down their e-commerce sites in the country, we're tracking what retailers are doing in response.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which began Feb. 24, has already had devastating impacts in Ukraine, with millions of refugees fleeing the country and an uncertain death toll as fighting continues. Countries across the world have responded by imposing sanctions on Russia, which take aim at everything from the economy and finance sectors to shipping and technology.

As the conflict continues to gain widespread attention, brands and retailers have come under pressure to take action as well, and many are stopping shipments to Russia or taking other actions in protest of the invasion. In the first days of March, H&M paused all of its sales in Russia, Ikea halted operations in both Russia and Belarus and Apple suspended product sales in Russia.

Other retailers have taken a different approach: Etsy, for example, canceled any balances Ukraine sellers owed to the marketplace. Many retailers have also announced donations to humanitarian aid organizations to help with relief efforts, some are matching their employees' donations and Amazon is supporting employees in Ukraine and adjacent countries through expediting immigration visas and providing more time off.

As with any fast-moving crisis, reactions from the business world are changing on a daily basis. Some retailers that originally announced their intentions of continuing to operate in Russia have since pulled out, while others are escalating their response. Amazon is not only refusing to ship retail products to Russia but is also putting restrictions on other avenues of revenue like its lucrative Amazon Web Services unit and Prime Video. retaildive.com

Pulling the Plug on Russia
Companies partly exiting Russia are under pressure to make it all or nothing

Some companies have revised their plans after being pushed to make a more definitive break from the country.

As Western governments ratchet up their economic punishments against Russia, the corporate world has paused or pulled out of operations there. But as the list of companies quitting Russia grows by the day, differences in the degree of disconnection are spurring debate.

Companies that have paused operations or announced limited pullouts are coming under pressure to make a more definitive break: all or nothing, in or out. That has led some to rapidly revise their plans, raising questions about the long-term implications.

Some corporate withdrawals are partial. Procter & Gamble, for example, has “discontinued all new capital investments” in Russia. It is also “significantly reducing” its product portfolio there. Danone and PepsiCo made similar moves, halting new investments and stopping sales of some products, but continuing with dairy and baby products, arguing that those products serve essential needs.

Some companies that initially said they would remain in Russia backtracked within days, including Deutsche Bank and the retailer Uniqlo. Others, like Shell, were pushed to go further than they originally announced.

Shutting down plants, offices and supply chains is complicated. Procter & Gamble’s Gillette plant in St. Petersburg, for example, exports shaving products to more than 50 countries and accounts for 70 percent of the Russian shaving product market. nytimes.com

Retailers & Consumers Back Away from Russia - Or So They Think
That Russian Business You’re Boycotting Isn’t Actually Russian

The consumer activism that makes a vodka C.E.O. say: ‘Do you know we’re Latvian?’

As Russia’s aggression in Ukraine takes a horrific human toll, turning millions into refugees, the boycotts are back: American consumers channeling outrage into ditching products they assume are produced by Russians in Russia, with ties, somehow, to Mr. Putin.

The problem with that logic is that Americans consume hardly any products that are truly Russian. That goes for vodka — and oil, too. Russian oil makes up 3 percent of what Americans consume on a daily basis.

This mistaken impression has led people to punish businesses that are really Russian in name only. Some states that recently placed a ban on Russian spirits discovered they were setting a policy that affected only two brands with a small footprint domestically — Russian Standard and Ustianochka. President Biden announced a ban on all Russian liquor imports on Friday. But less than 1 percent of the vodka consumed here comes from Russia, a beverage industry trade group has noted. nytimes.com

The End of an Era: From 2,400 Stores to Just 3
As of next month, there will be just 3 Kmarts left in the U.S.
Kmart’s famous blue light is getting really, really dim. The once omnipresent retailer will see its number of U.S. locations drop to three next month, with the closing of the Avenel, N.J., store. That’s scheduled to occur on April 17, which will leave Kmart with just three locations nationwide—in Westwood, N.J., Long Island, N.Y., and Miami.

At the company’s peak, there were 2,400 Kmarts in operation, with over 350,000 employees. The chain had revenues of $37 billion and owned brands including the Borders bookstore and Sports Authority. (Both of those businesses have since been acquired by former competitors.)

As rivals like Walmart grew, though, Kmart stumbled, in large part because it failed to target its audience and to keep pace with modernization, especially in inventory tracking. In 2002, it filed for bankruptcy and was later bought by hedge fund magnate Eddie Lampert and merged with Sears.

The combined chain limped along for several years but filed for bankruptcy itself in 2018. There are just a handful of full-line Sears stores left around the country. fortune.com

Walmart to Hire 5,000 Tech Associates
Walmart Announces New Tech Hubs in Toronto and Atlanta
Walmart Inc.’s technology organization, Walmart Global Tech, aims to hire 5,000 technology associates globally during this fiscal year and open new hubs in Toronto and Atlanta as part of its expansion plans, the retailer said.

Chief Technology Officer and Chief Development Officer Suresh Kumar said he is looking to fill tech roles in cybersecurity, architecture, development, software engineering, data science, data engineering, technical program management, and product management.

He said the new hires would work on technology across Walmart’s business, including customer experience, associate experience and back end systems like supply chain.

“We are pretty much all in on tech innovation,” Mr. Kumar said, noting the Walmart Global Tech team grew 26% last year and now has more than 20,000 employees.

Opportunities to hone skills on cutting-edge technology makes Walmart attractive to job seekers, he added. Before the addition of the two new hubs, Walmart Global Tech already had 14 hubs in places that included Silicon Valley, Northwest Arkansas, Dallas and Bangalore, India. wsj.com

COVID's Impact on Cyberattacks

Mobile Threats Skyrocket Amid Remote Work Shift

A new report shows an explosion of zero-day attacks and malware focused on mobile devices just as companies adopted widespread bring-your-own device policies

The volume of mobile threats is increasing and attackers are growing more sophisticated, with almost a third of zero-day attacks now targeting mobile devices, new data shows.

In its annual mobile threats report published this week, cybersecurity firm Zimperium says data from its services shows that nearly a quarter of mobile devices encountered malware last year, while 13% had their data intercepted by a machine-in-the-middle attack and 12% were directed to a malicious website.

The rising cyber-risk comes as the attack surface area of mobile applications has grown, with more than 900 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) reported in 2021 that directly affect Apple iOS or Google Android. In addition, risks have risen from the third-party components used by developers, and a variety of misconfigurations have undermined the security of the cloud services underpinning mobile applications.

The data suggests that adversaries are finding ways to exploit the traditionally strong software ecosystems surrounding mobile devices, says Richard Melick, director of threat reporting at Zimperium.

"There was a pivotal change in the landscape as mobile devices are being increasingly targeted by attackers," he says. "These mobile devices are critical to our everyday lives, and they are critical work tools, [so] organizations have to approach the mobile device with the same security in mind as traditional endpoints."

The mobile landscape has changed over the past two years, as the coronavirus pandemic forced employees to work from home, often using their own devices. Two-thirds of organizations currently have an active bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policy for workers, with another 11% looking to add the option in the next year, according to Zimperium's report. Before the pandemic, only 40% had a BYOD policy in place.

We're All Insider Threats
Identity Attacks Threaten Workloads, Not Just Humans

With insider access to infrastructure even more available, can businesses defend their expanded attack surface?

The pandemic pushed companies to accelerate their adoption of cloud services, infrastructure, and workloads to support a growing remote workforce, but the shift has redefined who represents an insider threat — nearly anyone, and any workload, with a set of credentials.
No wonder, then, that attackers are increasingly taking aim at cloud services and infrastructure using credential stuffing, phishing, and other identity attacks. An estimated 85% of Web application attacks used stolen credentials in 2021, according to Verizon's annual "Data Breach Investigations Report," while Microsoft estimates that 70% of attacks start with phishing, another identity-focused attack.

These are not new tactics on the part of adversaries, but they show that they are making use of the growing attack surface area, says Carolyn Crandall, chief security advocate at Attivo Networks, an identity detection and response firm.

"With the move to a hybrid workforce and the migration to AWS and Azure environments, this has been very difficult for security teams to manage," she says. "It is not necessarily that the attacks are changing to take greater advantage of identities as much as it is that this is a new attack surface that is very large that has made the risks exponentially higher."

As companies' internal infrastructure quickly transitioned during the pandemic to externally accessible cloud services and infrastructure, the risk of credential-based attacks has increased. Cloud and remote-access accounts protected by a simple username and password became the focus of most attackers. Microsoft claims to have blocked almost 26 billion identity attacks attempts in 2021, while Akamai blocked 193 billion credential attacks in 2020, an increase of 310% from 2019. darkreading.com

Cyber Threats in the Increasingly Digital World
Four Major Cyber Risks In An Era Of Tech Dominance
The World Economic Forum’s 2021 global risks report highlights technological risks that may lead to some of the following crises in the next decade:

1. Digital Power Concentration

The pandemic has shown that many of our online retail, communication, entertainment, learning and digital services are restricted to a limited number of big tech companies. This could lead to a concentration of critical digital assets, capabilities and knowledge among a handful of companies and in turn may lead to challenges in discretionary pricing, lack of impartial oversight, unequal private or public access to digital necessities, and a heightened risk of losing digital autonomy.

2. Digital Inequality

As society evolves around technology, the digital divide may broaden, which could manifest in several forms: Countries that have access to technology and connectivity may have a greater advantage than those that don’t. People who can use technology may be favored over ones that cannot, whether due to a lack of necessary skills, insufficient purchasing power, or other geopolitical and cultural challenges.

3. Failure Of Cybersecurity Measures

The frequency and intensity of cyberattacks are rising in part because the interconnectivity of systems introduces new loopholes and vulnerabilities. Trends like remote work and the rapid move to cloud computing are making breaches more likely to occur. Additionally, cybercriminals are showing entrepreneurial and cartel-like behavior, functioning like global enterprises. Policymakers and industries are failing to challenge these threats head-on, due to a lack of investment in security awareness training, skills and resources.

Biden vs. Amazon
Amazon Misses Trump Badly as Democrats Target the E-Commerce Giant

The Biden administration’s growing antitrust activity surprised the corporate behemoth, which had expected kid gloves from Democrats.

Did Amazon really imagine that smoother sailing lay ahead after Joe Biden took office last year? According to a recent report from The Wall Street Journal, chronicling the company’s increasingly pugilistic approach to dealing with politicians, regulators, and bureaucrats in Washington D.C., it indeed seems to be the case that the firm believed the change in administration was going to be a boon. Turns out, no!

For years, Trump had publicly attacked Amazon, threatening it with vaguely-stated antitrust actions. “We are looking at [antitrust] very seriously,” Trump said in a November 2018 interview with Axios. But Trump was never actually particularly serious about going after Amazon. Instead, this was typical Trump bluster: All bark and no bite.

Instead, the real energy for meaningful reform and anti-trust scrutiny, based in corporate power and it’s impact on labor and markets, has come from Democrats. Biden’s appointments to key posts in the Department of Justice and, particularly, the Federal Trade Commission reflect a keen interest in advancing antitrust causes.

If Amazon was surprised by these developments, then they weren’t paying attention. Now, the company is in trouble and lashing out. It has lately developed a reputation for showing a “middle finger” to Congress, to quote one former Republican aide who spoke to the Journal. It has certainly alienated members of Congress more than many its big tech peers; this strategy has only ensured that the firm would remain in lawmakers’ crosshairs. Carney, who hired specifically because of his deep connections to Beltway Democrats, has taken to sending furious messages to White House chief of staff Ron Klain about “perceived slights” against the company.

Washington has responded in kind to this charmless offensive: There have been an increasing number of bills that explore breaking up the company, or regulating it in ways that would profoundly change the way it does business. The FTC is currently exploring whether its acquisition of MGM, the storied Hollywood film studio, would violate antitrust laws.

Amazon’s recent struggles aren’t limited to their perversion of the marketplace. The company’s treatment of its warehouse employees and delivery drivers, who are aggressively monitored and have jobs that are often extremely taxing, continues to come under intense scrutiny. newrepublic.com

Houston, TX: Ross employee shot after helping his colleague who was being harassed by group of teenagers
Three days ago, Roderick Joseph, an employee for Ross Loss Prevention, said he was shot in the arm after he assisted a frightened elderly woman. “My fingers are still numb. My arm is still swollen. I got two pieces in me,” Joseph said. The Ross employee said he was helping his elderly colleague because she was being harassed by a group of teenagers at the store, which is located on Highway 6 in northwest Harris County. “I said. ‘Why are you picking on an elderly lady? Leave her alone and stop taking stuff from her,’” Joseph said. “They asked for ski masks so they were already planning on doing something.” Joseph said after he seemed to diffuse the situation, he walked back to the front of the store and watched the three guys and one female on the surveillance camera make their way towards the exit. He said he decided to confront the group after he saw them making signs at one another. “He was like, ‘What are you going to do about it?’ I said, ‘Sir, you are making gang signs. What are you going to do about it?’ I said, ‘Sir, go ahead and leave,’” Joseph said. Joseph said he helped the teens out of the store, and that’s when one of them pulled out a gun with a laser attached and pointed it directly at him. “He was shining it at me. I knew he was going to shoot. I stepped two feet back and said, ‘Just go ahead and leave.’ And the next thing you know, he shot me,” Joseph said. Joseph drove himself to the hospital and said he has no regrets about stepping up for a colleague who needed his help. Joseph, a husband and a father of two, is also a musician who works three jobs. He said he’s now worried about his family since he’s currently unable to work. If you’d like to help the family, his cash app is “$RocJoseph.” Investigators are hoping to release more information about the group of teens in the coming days. click2houston.com

Fresno, CA: Fashion Fair Mall stabbing suspect arrested, Chief of Police proposes banning gang members
The man accused of stabbing a teen boy at Fresno's Fashion Fair Mall over the weekend has been identified. Police say he's a known gang member currently on probation. "We want people to feel safe -- it's the perception of fear that is hurting us right now," said Chief Paco Balderrama. Mayor Jerry Dyer called for change alongside Chief Balderrama following a stabbing at Fashion Fair Mall over the weekend. "No person, regardless of where they're shopping, should have to shop in fear," said Mayor Dyer. Saturday evening, a large fight left a teenage boy with a stab wound to his armpit and another with a concussion after being hit with an unknown object. The suspect, now identified as 27-year-old Prophet Hillard, has been arrested. abc30.com

El Cajon, CA: Father of man who attacked Officer with bat outside Walmart says son is mentally ill
A man who allegedly tried to kill an El Cajon police officer by attacking him with a baseball bat pleaded not guilty on Monday to attempted murder and other charges. Julian Kurko, 26, is accused in the March 4 attack outside a Walmart on Fletcher Parkway. Kurko is also charged with robbery and assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer. He faces 47 years to life in prison if convicted of all counts. According to Lt. Randy Soulard, the officer contacted Kurko following reports that a man was "committing a theft and threatening citizens.'' According to Soulard, Kurko swung the bat at the officer's head, but the lawman was able to deflect the blow and restrain Kurko until backup arrived. During that time, Kurko allegedly "continued to threaten to kill him.'' Body-worn camera footage shows the officer approaching a man, allegedly Kurko, and asking him to drop the bat before the bat-wielding man swings at the officer. After he's restrained, the man in the video can be heard saying, "I'll (expletive) kill you, (expletive)'' and "I want to kill you, bro.'' “The judge, based on the charges and the history, made a finding that he should be held without bail,” Deputy District Attorney Shane Waller said outside court. Court records showed Kurko has a criminal history dating back to 2013, including two prior convictions for resisting an officer, making criminal threats, and carrying a concealed dagger. cbs8.com

Every executive has an agenda out of absolute necessity and in the normal course of doing business. Agendas, in essence, drive performance and results. However, it's the hidden agendas that one must be on the look out for because those are the ones that do the most damage to executives and companies. And while many tend not to acknowledge them, they do exist, and finding them is the key. Dealing with them and managing them is extremely difficult and oftentimes one finds his or herself managing the after effect and not even seeing them until it's too late. Just remember one thing - If you know the stripes on a Zebra you can ride the Zebra and, if you don't know the stripes, the Zebra will ride you.

Just a Thought,
Gus
