Macy's and Next Generation Smart Loss Prevention Solutions
By Tony D'Onofrio, Global Retail Influencer
Over the last several months I have had the pleasure of spending time with Asset
Protection (AP) leaders at Macy's in New York. The visits were sparked by news
articles and industry discussions on their advanced deployments of RFID and the
smart integration of this Internet-of-Things (IoT) technology into the loss
prevention function.
The Macy's RFID Journey
The RFID deployment at Macy's started seven years ago with shoe display
execution. Almost immediately, the Macy's AP team recognized the substantial
value of the increased data available from RFID. Inventory visibility led to
monthly identification of theft trends and the ability to reset shortage
reduction initiatives based on timelier data.
Macy's goal is to integrate as many technologies as possible to create more
efficient investigations. Video linked to RFID data brought a new level of
visibility to item inventory data. Exception reports integrated with the same
granular IoT data elevated the types of investigations possible.
There is limited data that can be gleamed from Electronic Article Surveillance
(EAS) alarm which is just a simple alert. Macy's recently upgraded the exits to
read RFID. With this IoT technology, you can now see the product walking out the
door.
All the data sets generated by all these systems are reviewed daily by the AP
team. The integrated technology approach has led to a perpetual holistic data
driven approach to fighting important threats such as Organized Retail Crime
(ORC). It is no longer just a gut instinct. Documented intelligent data-driven
theft trends are now driving actions in the store.
As Macy's Joe Coll, Vice President of Asset Protection Operations &
Administration, states in this
LP News Network video,
RFID has revolutionized how
asset protection is managed at Macy's, including delivering significant shrink
reduction results.

FDA puts 15 retailers on notice for allegedly selling tobacco products to minors
The Food and Drug Administration called out 15 retailers on Monday for allegedly
selling tobacco products to minors and requested information from more than 40
e-cigarette companies the agency thinks may have illegally introduced new
products onto the market.
The agency named corporate-owned and franchise retailers who were allegedly
found selling tobacco products to minors more than 15 percent of the time since
the FDA started conducting inspections 2010. These retailers include
Walgreens, Walmart, Kroger, 7-Eleven, Family Dollar, BP and Citgo. FDA
Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said in a
statement that he plans to ask these companies about what policies they
have in place and what more they plan to do.
He sent Walgreens a letter on Monday requesting a meeting with its management
team. Last month, Gottlieb
said Walgreens was the top violator among pharmacies that sell tobacco
products. Some 22 percent of Walgreens locations inspected by the agency caught
employees illegally selling tobacco products to minors, the FDA said in a press
release at the time.
"Retailers are on the frontlines of these efforts to reduce the health
consequences of tobacco use and nicotine dependence," Gottlieb said in a
statement Monday. "Walgreens, and other retail chains, should take seriously not
only their legal obligations, but also the substantial public health importance
of preventing tobacco product sales to minors at their stores."

CEO of British retailer Ted Baker quits after allegations of 'forced hugging'
Ted Baker's founder and CEO has resigned as the fashion brand investigates
allegations he behaved inappropriately toward staff.
The British company said in a
statement Monday that Ray Kelvin has left with immediate effect. He had been
on a voluntary leave of absence since December following allegations of
harassment, including "forced hugging" of staff members.
Complaints over Kelvin's behavior first emerged late last year. Thousands of
people, including members of staff and customers, signed an
online petition demanding an end to the hugging practice and a better system
for reporting harassment allegations at the firm. The petition included
accusations of "inappropriate touching" by Kelvin and "a culture that leaves
harassment unchallenged."

Huawei CFO Sues Canada Over Arrest
Chinese Tech Giant Preparing to Sue the U.S. Government Too
The chief financial officer of China's tech giant Huawei is suing Canada over
her arrest at the request of the US. Meng Wanzhou was held in December at
Vancouver airport on suspicion of fraud and breaching US sanctions on Iran.
On Friday Ms Meng filed a civil claim against Canada's government, border agency
and police for "serious breaches" of her civil rights. It came on the same day
that Canada officially launched Meng Wanzhou's extradition process to the US.
According to the New York Times, Huawei is also preparing to sue the United
States government for banning federal agencies from using the company’s
products, according sources. The move could be aimed at forcing the United
States government to more publicly make its case against the Chinese equipment
maker. It is part of a broad push by Huawei to defend itself against a campaign
led by the United States to undermine the company, which Washington sees as a
security threat.

Walmart's Latest Streamlining Move:
Cutting Overnight Re-Stocking Shifts in 300 Stores
The company is eliminating the overnight shift that restocks the aisles at about
300 stores, and will aim to transition those employees to other hours. The
impacted stores are primarily smaller ones with lower annual sales or customer
traffic.
At the same time, Walmart’s expanding the use of a backroom conveyor system that
takes boxes of products from trucks and scans them to speed their delivery to
the shelves. The so-called “FAST
Unloader” machine will be in 1,700 stores by the end of the year, up from
400 now.

Grocers Brace for Another Blow From Amazon
Amazon to Launch New Grocery-Store Business
by End of the Year
Amazon.com Inc. has challenged grocers by pushing them to lower prices and
expand their delivery options. Now the company’s latest plans threaten to steal
sales of some of the industry’s more profitable products.
The e-commerce giant plans to launch urban grocery stores that could offer a
spectrum of goods that includes beauty products alongside food,
The Wall Street Journal has reported. Beauty products represent a small
portion of supermarket sales but tend to offer higher profits than more
traditional items.
The move couldn’t come at a worse time for grocers, which have been focused on
building up digital selling operations to compete with Amazon online.
Amazon has an aggressive timeline for the store openings, with the first on
track to debut as soon as the end of this year, according to people familiar
with the matter. The company aims to open dozens of locations in major cities,
including Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., the Journal has reported.

Entire staffs at 3 Ohio Sonic locations quit after wages cut to '$4/hour plus
tips'
"Due to terrible management the whole store has quit" reads a letter posted on
the window of a Sonic restaurant in Circleville, Ohio. The expletive-laden
letter points the finger at new owners who "don't give a [expletive] about
anyone but themselves" as the reason for the entire staff quitting, temporarily
shutting down the store.
According to The Scioto Post, the workers were angry over their pay being cut
from Ohio's minimum wage of $8.55/hour to $4.00/hour plus tips. Many pointed out
fast food workers rarely get tipped.
Two other stores in Ohio, one in Lancaster and one in Grove City who are also
under the same new ownership, also quit en masse, according to The Scioto Post.

'Everyone has some form of PTSD': Former Australian employees describe toxic bullying culture at Japanese fast-fashion retailer Uniqlo
Seven shirts folded per minute, “shouting
rooms” and 18-hour days
Former Australian Uniqlo employees have spoken out about the “weird, awful,
abusive” culture at the Japanese fast-fashion giant, where they claim bullying
is rife and everyone leaves with “some form of PTSD”.
Earlier this month, former HR manager Melanie Bell
sued the retailer, alleging in an explosive $1 million claim that she had
been bullied and discriminated against due to her “caucasian heritage”.
According to three former colleagues, Ms Bell’s experience was not unique. Each
worked in different locations and different roles — a sales assistant, a visual
merchandiser and an assistant store manager — but all shared similar stories of
a deeply toxic work environment.
"They have a policy where you can buy discounted clothing for yourself or family
as a gift. They would get the loss prevention people to follow staff members
outside the store around the block after they made a purchase to check if they
were giving it to people... It’s one of the tactics they use if they didn’t
like you."

eBay assists in an investigation of a Superintendent –
charged on eight separate criminal counts
Former Logan County Schools superintendent Phyllis Doty on Friday was sentenced
to more than three years in federal prison after being convicted on eight
separate criminal counts last August.
According to evidence presented at Doty’s trial, beginning in September 2011,
she purchased $12,000 in iPods and iPads with school system money and sold them
or gave them to family members. Federal prosecutors told jury members that at
least 20 devices were stolen.
Testimony by Doty’s former secretary confirmed that several devices sold on eBay
were connected to a mobile number issued to Doty by the Logan County Board of
Education.

Companies Still Learning About Fire Risks Around Robots
Robot
workers can’t go on strike but they can go up in flames
Machines may be efficient and safe workers, but their environment isn’t designed
for human intervention when disaster strikes. The financial repercussions can
also be worse if a retailer’s risk is concentrated in a few expensive warehouses
rather than hundreds of stores.
Fire damage at online retailers’ sites can be costly. Asos halted distribution
for more than a month in 2005 after an oil depot explosion set one of its
facilities alight in southern England. Another blaze in 2014 stopped orders from
a different U.K. site, costing it as much as 30 million pounds in lost sales.
Police considered the cause of the second fire to be arson. A fire at an Asos
facility near Berlin in 2017 ruined inventory worth about 6 million pounds,
though none of the technology or structure was affected.
Robots may eventually become so advanced that
they can douse flames themselves,
according to Lawrie at Forrester. “If they are sufficiently smart to be able to
pick the produce, I’m sure they are quite smart enough to fight a fire,” he
said.

Using simulated disaster management to tackle the security skills gap
Some organisations are turning to simulated disaster management scenarios in
order to provide their staff with the experience they need. Just as fire drills
are used to assess how personnel respond to a potential incident, simulating
critical failures allows organisations to see how their staff respond to such
events.
“I always go back to my military training and one of the things we learned was
to
train like you are going to fight, because you
will fight like you train,” says Beam.
Simulations allow cyber security personnel to
experience critical failures, without any risk to the actual network or company
data. These simulations can vary from
disaster recovery scenarios to white hat hackers probing a company’s network
defences to see how their IT teams respond to the perceived threat.
“Too many organisations talk about disaster recovery, but never really test it
and make sure it is working the way they think it is working,” says Colin
Tankard, managing director of Digital Pathways.
Simulated disaster management provides a replica of an organisation’s network
architecture, thus providing a real-world experience, thereby making responses
second-nature.
This allows cyber security teams to use the security tools that they would use
in a genuine situation and to experience the network setup and traffic. In order
to be effective, disaster scenarios need to be accurately simulated, including
advanced, evolving threats, targeted malware and ransomware.

Panera, Ex-CEO Sue Each Other Over Former IT Team
Panera Bread and its former chief executive and founder Ron Shaich have hit each
other with lawsuits over noncompete agreements signed by three information
technology employees who say Panera abruptly fired them in February after
learning they planned to join Shaich's new company.
The clash of fast-casual titans pits the longtime chain of 2,300 bakery-cafes —
which zealously guards its trade secrets and proprietary data behind a wall of
noncompetes and computer security measures — against its founder. Shaich
finances competing brands such as Tatte Bakery and Cafe and the recently merged
Cava Mezze Grill and Zoe's Kitchen since his departure from Panera in 2018.
Panera's breach of contract suit, filed Thursday in Missouri federal court,
claims Shaich's new company, Act III Management LLC,
recruited the three key IT executives in a
conspiracy to use the chain's hard-earned confidential information
as Act III ramps up operations.

Fakespot Analyzes Over 3 Billion Online Reviews
And Launches New AI Engine
Artificial Intelligence backed data authentication platform Fakespot
announced it has surpassed 3 billion reviews analyzed, up 50% from the end
of 2017. The company also recently launched new search engines for Best Buy,
Walmart, Sephora, and Steam helping users stay informed by detecting fake
reviews and counterfeit products before commiting to a purchase. Fakespot also
supports Amazon, TripAdvisor, and Yelp. Fakespot provides online shoppers with a
new way of filtering reviews on Amazon, Yelp, TripAdvisor, Walmart, Sephora,
Steam, and Best Buy. Using artificial intelligence, Fakespot’s proprietary
platform eliminates fake and unreliable information and provides consumers with
valuable insights from the authentic reviews that helps them assess the true
quality of a product or service.
Research shows that 91% of people regularly or occasionally read online
reviews, and 84% trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations.
As a result, many eCommerce retailers have resorted to using different types of
unreliable reviews (fake and promotional) to help gain visibility and convert
sales, but often leave their customers feeling deceived.
In addition to deception, a recent report from the Government Accountability
Office revealed that products purchased from third-party sellers on Walmart,
Amazon, and Ebay could be counterfeit and harmful to your health. The report
also claimed that counterfeit iPhone adapters can pose a risk of lethal
electrocution, counterfeit travel mugs can include higher lead concentrations,
and counterfeit cosmetics contain substances such as cyanide, mercury, and rat
droppings. Third-party sellers also advertised counterfeit items shipping from
the US as new and name-brand, and had average customer ratings above 90%, making
it hard for customers to discern.
Over the last two years, Amazon customers reported 5,101 counterfeit products
and according to the Global Brand Counterfeiting Report, losses from
eCommerce shams alone totaled $323 billion last year. Ultimately, if
eCommerce giants don’t want counterfeit goods to become a widespread health
issue, they’ll need to accept responsibility and be more transparent. To date,
Fakespot supports seven eCommerce sites and has analyzed over 3 billion reviews,
making them the most trusted platform for detecting fraudulent product reviews
on the internet.

European CEO magazine investigates the growing
online counterfeit market, more in its latest issue
Globally, the market for online counterfeiting amounted to $323bn in 2017,
boosted by the relentless rise of e-commerce and social media. This growing
problem is presenting budding businesses with a challenge: spend vast resources
keeping on top of IP infringements or allow online fakes to tarnish your brand.
By automating brand protection through artificial intelligence technology,
hundreds of thousands of illegal products can be removed from the internet every
day, Laura Urquizu, the CEO of Red Points, told European CEO for its spring 2019
issue. “Speed and accuracy are key when it comes to effectively fighting online
counterfeits, and this can only be achieved with smart technology,” Urquizu
said.

around the Phoenix metro area. A Phoenix police spokesman said Friday that
23-year-old Christian Contreras has been arrested and booked on 18 counts of
armed robbery. The arrest came after weeks of interviewing witnesses, collecting
evidence and collaborating with other law enforcement agencies to identify the
suspect.

Jury Convicts Gunman in Killing of Off-Duty
Chicago Police Officer working security inside C-Store in 2011
A
reputed gang member was convicted late Thursday night in the 2011 slaying of
off-duty Chicago police Officer Clifton Lewis as he worked security at a West
Side convenience store. Cook County prosecutors said Alexander Villa shot Lewis
after running into M&M Quick Foods in the North Austin neighborhood with a
Tec-9-style gun slung around his neck. A jury deliberated about 3½ hours before
convicting Villa about 11:30 p.m. of first-degree murder, aggravated battery and
armed robbery, said Tandra Simonton, a spokeswoman for the Cook County state’s
attorney’s office. Villa, 31, faces up to life in prison.

Tip of the Day
Sponsored

|
Perception becomes reality slowly on a macro level and it's difficult to change
it if it's incorrect or doesn't portray the truth. It's the same reason law
enforcement separates witnesses to ensure clarity and truth. The group mind
becomes influenced by opinion and agendas and distorts the true reality. One can
only rely on daily vigilance based on doing what's right to hopefully impact the
individuals one works with on a daily basis to carry the experience forward and
be witness to what is right.
Just a Thought, Gus
