Managing Self-checkouts in Retail: Utilising the
SCO Management Pyramid
By Adrian Beck, Emeritus Professor, University
of Leicester
The
use of self-scan and checkout (SCO) technologies has grown considerably
in the past 15 years, predominately, but not exclusively in the Grocery sector,
where customer and product volumes, and space utilisation issues, make it a
particularly appealing proposition. For many retailers it has provided a
significant opportunity to reduce their core costs at a time of increasing
competition, and as new iterations of the technology have evolved, there would
seem to be a growing appetite amongst certain groups of users to prefer this
mode of shopping.
For many of those tasked with ensuring that retailers sell more products than
they lose, the emergence of SCO technologies has been viewed as a concern, not
least in the difficulty in imposing strong enough controls over the way in which
it may be used and abused.
It is within this context that research undertaken by Beck on behalf of the ECR
Community Shrinkage and OSA Group was formulated to deliver two key objectives:
quantify the risks associated with different forms of SCO technology; and review
the various ways in which these risks might be controlled and managed.

Getting The Most Value Out Of Your ISC West Experience
By: Fredrik Nilsson Vice President of the
Americas, Axis Communications
ISC
West 2019 is going to bombard you with more options than ever before. Dozens of
new technologies and vendors as well as old familiar faces will be vying for
your attention.
With only three days, it’s nearly impossible to explore every booth and every
vendor. Ultimately, you’ll want to focus your limited time on companies whose
partnership can lead to your organization’s long-term success. In that context,
I’d like to suggest a few things to think about as you wend your way through
this year’s tradeshow.
The Next Wave In IP Technology
Though the IP video revolution is now a fait accompli, there are still a few
ancillary security technologies that are just beginning to jump on the IP
convergence bandwagon. I’m referring to two in particular: IP audio systems and
IP intercom solutions. So I’d recommend spending time at booths showcasing this
technology.
Artificial Intelligence: Hype Vs. Reality
Before you get swept up in all the big promises that have yet to prove
deliverable, take time at ISC West to educate yourself about the current state
of the technology. AI works well in some areas. But it’s too early in the game
to assume that AI can be applied across the board. Talk to some of the AI
vendors at ISC West to learn when and if AI might be right for your
organization’s analytic applications. See who has actual, field-proven solutions
and who is just offering ideas that might take many years to prove useful in
real applications.
Connecting With The Right Partner
Look around the tradeshow floor and see who might by likely partners Choosing
the right partner is as important in business as it is life.
As you explore potential vendor relationships, make sure you not only look at
the arc of their technology development, but also their long-term financial
stability and the kind of support services they offer. Cybersecurity should be
front and center on your radar, along with timely updates, product integration
with your existing technology and ongoing training to gain the most benefit from
your investment.
Go In With A Plan
I’d advise that you plan out your days in advance so that you can get the most
value from the choices you make.

Public safety demand driving video surveillance market
The global video surveillance market’s estimated growth is targeted at $77.21
billion by 2023, according to BIS Research’s market intelligence report, “Global
Video Surveillance Market – Analysis and Forecast, 2018-2023.”
Supporting these increases is the rising demand for IP cameras, video content
analytics (VCA) and Video Surveillance as a Service (VSaas), and security
manufacturers should reciprocate by offering highly efficient, time-saving
surveillance systems at an affordable price. Consumers are also demanding
more physical security as seen by a proliferation of installed IP
camera-based surveillance systems across global communities.
Zeroing in on North America, including the United States, Canada and Mexico, the
video surveillance market size is projected to reach $26.16 billion in 2023.
Although saturation isn’t an issue, Ahmad mentioned privacy issues, threat to
data integrity and an increased burden of data storage on government agencies as
potential market inhibitors, but these are balanced by market drivers: reduced
reliance on physical security and increasing government initiatives to
improve public safety.
“As the video surveillance market evolves and is accepted more from the consumer
end,” Ahmad explained, “the demand for higher bandwidth and a stronger network
connection pose to be a major challenge.”
“The use of multi-sensor cameras [which are trending in the market and
replacing standard cameras], body-worn cameras and drones in security
surveillance are some key trends pertaining to North America specifically,”
said Ahmad.
The video surveillance market is and, based on BIS Research, will continue to
witness wide consumer acceptance and demand in various applications — VSaaS, VCA,
real-time analytics and more in the coming years.

Nike Can't Escape Class Claims In Sex
Discrimination Suit
An Oregon federal magistrate judge has recommended rejecting Nike Inc.'s motion
to dismiss class claims of discrimination against female workers at its
headquarters, saying the plaintiffs had alleged systemic practices that hurt all
female employees.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Jolie Russo’s findings and recommendations on Tuesday
rejected Nike’s argument that the proposed class claims on behalf of every woman
employed at the sports gear giant's headquarters are too broad, saying the
plaintiffs had alleged collective harm to the entire proposed class.
The suit, which has four current and former Nike employees as named plaintiffs,
accuses Nike of violating the Equal Pay Act and Oregon state law by maintaining
policies that create and exacerbate gender disparities in pay and promotions at
the company's headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. It claims women's complaints
about sexual misbehavior are not taken seriously by human resources officials
and that men are rarely penalized.
The women contend Nike has a policy of basing initial pay on a worker’s prior
salary history, a practice they say causes women to receive lower pay, and that
the company ranks its corporate employees at Nike headquarters using a skewed
system that causes women to receive lower ratings than their male counterparts.

Security Guard Unable to Walk Patrol Seeks
Accommodation
A security guard's claim of failure to accommodate under the Americans with
Disabilities Act (ADA) could proceed to trial despite his physical inability to
perform walking patrol rounds, a federal district court decided.
Professional Pointer: Employers may assume that because an employee wants
to modify an essential job function, they can safely reject the modification.
However, the ADA requires that, even if an accommodation would alter an
essential job function, the employer must still explore whether a reasonable
accommodation is available and, if it is, whether it would pose an undue
hardship.

IKEA hit with 5th lawsuit alleging age
discrimination
Despite receiving good performance reviews, IKEA rejected Paine for promotions
because of his age, he said. When Paine asked an IKEA manager why he was passed
over for another promotion, she told him that the role he applied for was new
and required an external candidate who could come up with "new and innovative
ideas."
Employers need to proceed with caution when planning layoffs,
distributing promotions or carrying out any staff reorganization, Weinberg,
Wheeler, Hudgins, Gunn and Dial Partner Matt Gomes previously told HR Dive in an
interview. "Older employees generally, because they've been in the company
longer, tend to be more senior, more highly paid. Seniority is a legitimate,
bona fide justification for wage difference in the same job," Gomes said.
But when leaders choose to lay off those making the most money, they may
be setting themselves up for an age discrimination claim, Gomes said. To avoid
accusations of age discrimination following any employment decision, layoffs or
otherwise, it's important that HR document everything from job interviews to
performance reviews to the resulting decision.
Employers need to monitor their language, too, Gomes and Morgan Lewis
Partner Melissa Rodriguez said. Managers, supervisors and leaders may use
phrases and adages that, outside of the workplace, would raise no suspicion of
age discrimination. But when someone uses an age stereotype to describe an ideal
candidate — or the type of applicant who'd be denied — it can signal bias, they
said.

Analysis: Penney now has the right leader but has
very little time to course correct
So far, we are broadly impressed with Ms. Soltau. Her approach seems levelheaded
and customer-centric. She has identified certain areas, like the foray into
appliances, which are not working and has acted to remedy them; some stores are
also being closed to help improve the financials. She also appears to be
building a good team around her, including the appointment of a new chief
merchant, Michelle Wlazlo. In our view, Ms. Wlazlo’s experience of revitalizing
Target’s apparel offering will prove extremely valuable as JCP tries to improve
its relevance.
As much as we firmly believe Jill Soltau is the right leader, our main concern
is that JCP has very little time to course correct. The business needs to move
at pace and without any missteps – a tall order in today’s complex and
fast-moving retail environment. Ms. Soltau has noted that J.C. Penney is a
revered brand, but such warm sentiments will ultimately mean little unless the
company focuses on its customers and gives them reasons to use JCP. chainstoreage.com
What are some common misconceptions about
Amazon?
One of the most common is that Amazon is killing retail. That’s not true.
Amazon is killing mediocre retail, by exposing weaker players that have

Yesterday's Congressional Hearings
Industry Groups Support Federal Privacy Regulation, In Theory
Representatives from the telecommunications, retail, software and advertising
industries told senators Wednesday that they support a federal privacy
regulation, but balked at the prospect of the U.S. adopting strict measures
similar to laws passed recently in Europe and California.
Industry representatives argued that privacy legislation should be written
broadly--similar to the U.S. Bill of Rights--with general restrictions for how
businesses gather, store and use consumer data. The Federal Trade Commission
should be given leeway over how to enforce the law as technology and consumer
expectations change over time, they said.
Corporate groups also agreed that any federal privacy law should give consumers
the right to review, request changes to and delete data that companies collect
about them.
Michael Beckerman, chief executive of the
Internet Association,
whose members include
Facebook Inc., Twitter Inc. and Amazon.com Inc.,
responded that people should be notified in a “timely matter” but argued that a
72-hour window could disrupt law-enforcement investigations that may benefit
from the breach being kept temporarily confidential.
Industry officials and lawmakers agreed that federal privacy regulation should
be enforced by the FTC, and that the agency should have the power to fine
violators and hire additional staff to carry out the law.

NRF: Everyone Should Disclose Data Breaches, Not
Just Retailers
Unknown in Users, Data, Devices, and Apps are
Major Concerns for CISOs
Cisco's 2019 CISO Benchmark Study results show security professionals are
placing higher priority on
vendor consolidation, collaboration between
networking and security teams, and security awareness exercises
to strengthen an organizations security posture and reduce the risk of breaches.
To further address complexity challenges, many CISOs are increasingly confident
that migrating to the cloud will improve protection efforts, while apparently
decreasing reliance on less proven technologies such as artificial intelligence
(AI).
Complex security environments
made up of solutions from 10 or more security vendors could be hampering
security professional’s visibility across their environments. Sixty-five percent
of respondents do not find it easy to determine the scope of a compromise,
contain it and remediate from exploits. The unknown threats that exist outside
the enterprise in the form of users, data, devices, and apps is also a top
concern for CISOs.
● The most collaborative teams lose the
least money. Elimination of silos shows a tangible financial upside
● Employees/users continue to be one of the greatest protection challenges for
many CISOs
● Email security remains the number one threat vector. securitymagazine.com
Cloud business initiatives accelerating faster
than security teams’ ability
to secure them
The speed of cloud business initiatives is hampering organizations’ ability to
secure and manage hybrid environments, with security personnel often not
included. The 2019 State of Hybrid Cloud Security survey by FireMon revealed 60%
of respondents either agreed or strongly agreed that this was happening in their
organizations.
Only 56% of respondents indicated that network security, security operations or
security compliance teams are responsible for cloud security.
In the remaining 44% of cases, IT/cloud teams, application owners or other teams
outside the security organization are responsible for cloud security.
Similarly, the relationship between security and DevOps is inconsistent across
organizations, which can impact the consistency of cloud security controls, as
more enterprises deploy “as-a-Service” models in the cloud. In some cases,
DevOps and security are fully aligned and working well together. In other cases,
the relationship is difficult or even dysfunctional.

IoT, APIs, and Criminal Bots Pose Evolving
Dangers
Retail Apparel Market Being Targeted Withy Credential Stuffing Attacks
Akamai's "2019
State of the Internet" report points out that a growing number of these
attacks are generated by networks populated by All-in-One bots, or AIOs. These
bots can be rented to commercial clients for spamming inboxes or message
clients, launching DDoS attacks, or credential stuffing. According to the Akamai
report, the
retail apparel market experienced 3.7 billion
credential stuffing attempts in the eight months of 2018 used as the basis for
the report.
Those attacks aren't coming from international actors, though the weapons used
span the globe. "A lot of it's coming from Russia, a lot is coming from Canada,
but it's largely
Americans buying these botnets and running them
against the sites," says Martin McKeay,
security researcher and editorial director at Akamai.
The American criminals know their targets: McKeay says that
1.636 billion credential-stuffing attacks were
launched against a single retail organization.
In Akamai's case, it uses data from its own network to show that API traffic,
from IoT devices that range from smartwatches to televisions, now accounts for
83% of the traffic it sees versus 17% from browsers. While McKeay is quick to
point out that not every network will see the traffic mix handled by Akamai, he
does believe these broad analyses are applicable to the Internet as a whole and
have significant implications for security.

Sales Up 3
Percent in Voice Norge RFID Pilot
The retailer has deployed
an RFID solution from Nedap across its 200 Nordic stores, enabling it to display
in-store products to online shoppers, thereby making both online and physical
shopping easier and more efficient.
Retailers are competing to more quickly deliver products or make
them available to shoppers through online purchasing. Voice Norge AS had adopted
an RFID system to help lead that effort, by not only providing online shopping,
but also enabling shoppers to view which products are available in their
neighborhood stores before going there, so that they can pick up purchased goods
in their own neighborhood. The inventory data is being captured via a
UHF RFID-based
system from Nedap.
Voice Norge has deployed RFID technology across all of its stores to enable this
feature and has found that sales are up at the pilot locations. Voice, based in
Oslo, operates 200 stores across Norway, including Match, VIC and Boys of
Europe. The retailer sought a system with which it could offer better product
availability and thereby increase sales.
Nedap's !D Cloud RFID software platform captures Electronic Product Code
(EPC) data as goods are received and counted at stores, explains Mark Kasbergen,
Nedap's global business developer. The system enables Voice Norge to share that
information with customers on its website, so that they can make purchase
decisions based on the products available for sale at specific locations. The
rollout started in February 2018 and was completed within six months. According
to Kasbergen, this is the largest RFID deployment in the Nordic retail market to
date. Read more:

Amazon’s Project Zero Aims to Help Brands Target
Scammers
Retail giant gives companies access to new tool for removing suspected
counterfeit listings
Amazon.com is starting to let brand owners delete listings on its site for
products they deem fake, marking a sharp shift in its struggle to fight
counterfeiters that cedes some of its responsibility to other companies.
The online retail giant on Thursday launched a new anticounterfeiting program,
called Project Zero, that it says would better protect brands from scammers by
letting them designate listings for removal, rather than going through a
cumbersome reporting process with Amazon. The company has been testing it with
roughly 15 brands for a few months, and will now start inviting selected
additional companies to participate. Amazon said it wants all brand owners to
join the program eventually but declined to specify a timeline.
As part of Project Zero, Amazon also is including a tool that generates a unique
code for each product unit that the brand can print onto existing packaging or
attach onto items using a sticker. The codes can then be scanned to ensure a
product’s authenticity when it enters an Amazon warehouse. Amazon said its
engineers also are working to better train the algorithms that automatically
scan, block and scrub the site of suspect listings.

Build.com Stops Online Journey Hijacking, Sees
Sales Increase
The appearance of unauthorized ads injected into consumer browsers that redirect
website visitors to competitor products and promotions — i.e., online journey
hijacking — has been an issue for many online retailers’ businesses,
Build.com being no
exception. The online seller of home goods was finding that 20 percent of its
traffic was being exposed to an infected site, obviously impacting
Build.com's sales.
In an interview with Total Retail last week at
eTail West,
Patrick Berry, senior director of technology at Build.com, discussed the
company's partnership with
Namogoo, and how it has helped Build.com prevent online journey hijacking.
To test Namogoo's solution for online journey hijacking, Build.com ran an A/B
split test. Fifty percent of the retailer's traffic were exposed to the site
with Namogoo's tag solution implemented, while the other 50 percent saw the site
without a Namogoo tag. The results of the test blew Berry and Build.com away.
The traffic exposed to Namogoo's tag generated a 2.18 percent uplift in
conversion. As for the other half of the test that wasn't exposed to Namogoo's
solution, there was a 20 percent infection rate (35 percent of all infections
occurred on mobile and tablet devices), and 97.7 percent of the infections
featured visual ads for competitors’ offers or products.

it appears a man got out of an SUV and approached a man in a car. During a
“brief struggle” shots were fired and the man from the SUV was fatally struck.
Police say the man in the car is considered a victim and is cooperating with
investigators. The SUV left the scene, but police were able to stop it on Old
Spanish Trail and detain multiple people in the vehicle. According to police,
the man who died and the people in the SUV have gang ties. Detectives with the
Tucson Police Department Gang Unit have taken over the investigation.

Cargo Theft
US Cargo Thefts drop in 2018, but threat level
still high
The US recorded a 19 per cent decline in the number of cargo thefts in 2018
compared to the prior year, continuing a trend seen in recent years. The new
data from Sensitech reveals however that the rate of decline in incident numbers
appears to be slowing, and with an average of 1.6 thefts each day during 2018 –
valued on average at a little over $14,000 - the US retains its high threat
level.
Among the trends noted in Sensitech’s annual report is that electronics was the
most targeted product category by cargo thieves in 2018, the first time it has
topped the ranking since 2009 and accounting for 20 per cent of all incidents,
followed by home and garden (16 per cent) and food and drink (14 per cent). Also
prominent among 2018’s thefts included building and industrial (10 per cent),
auto parts (7 per cent) and clothing and shoes (6 per cent), and there was a
spike in the miscellaneous category – which mainly consists of mixed retail
loads – to 11 per cent.

Dover, DE: Convicted Killer Asks Board to Commute
Sentence
for Liquor Store Murder
A man serving life in prison for the 1982 murder of a Delaware liquor store
owner is seeking commutation of his sentence. The state Board of Pardons was
scheduled to hear the request by Tyrone R. Baxter on Thursday. Baxter pleaded
guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced to life behind bars in exchange
for testifying against co-defendant James Riley. Riley was initially sentenced
to death for the murder of 59-year-old James Feeley. He spent years on death row
before a federal appeals court overturned his death sentence in 2001. Riley was
later sentenced to life in prison after a retrial in which he acted as his own
attorney. If the board approves commutation for Baxter, the recommendation would
go to Gov. John Carney, who would make the final decision.

Tip of the Day
Sponsored
by Vector Security Networks
|
Sometimes when you're moving so fast and dealing with the mistakes of the day,
the frustration levels peak and one can tend to forget that sometimes you've
just got to stop, listen and take a breath and maybe talk to a friend about it
all. If it's a good friend, they'll bring you back into focus and make sure you
don't react too aggressively and make the mistakes even worst. There aren't many
friends like that nor ones that you can absolutely trust. But if you've got a
couple, make sure you thank them as well for taking the time.
Just a Thought, Gus
