Walmart
Continues Half-Billion-Dollar Security Investment
with 1,000 New Asset Protection Positions
2016's 'More at the Door' is Growing
AP 'Customer Host' Positions Expanded to Additional Stores
Traditional Greeter Position Being Eliminated from 1,000 U.S. Stores
Workers With Disabilities Feel Targeted
According to Walmart, greeters are being removed at about 1,000 stores around
the country. NPR has found that Walmart is changing the job requirements for
front-door greeters in a way that appears to disproportionately affect workers
with disabilities. Greeters with disabilities in five states told NPR they
expect to lose their jobs after April 25 or 26.
Walmart is the largest private employer in the U.S. and has a large workforce of
workers with disabilities. And the job of greeter has been a particularly
attractive fit, as it isn't physically strenuous and is easy to learn.
But Walmart has been eliminating greeters and replacing them with "customer
hosts," who have expanded responsibilities, such as taking care of security or
assisting shoppers. The change is going into effect at the end of April. It
is the latest wave in a
policy that Walmart started in 2016. It has already affected about 1,000
stores.
According to interviews with workers and documents reviewed by NPR, to qualify
for these new host positions, workers must be able to lift 25 pounds, clean up
spills, collect carts and stand for long periods of time, among other things —
tasks that can be impossible for people with disabilities. Workers say they've
been told they must be able to climb a ladder to qualify for some of the other
jobs at the store.

Asset Protection Adds 9,000 Jobs
Walmart May 2016 Blog Post:
Offering Customers More at the Door
Last year, we launched a pilot program that in many stores, moved our greeters
from action alley back to the front door, and in others, introduced a brand-new
position: customer host, an associate who greets customers, but also checks
receipts where appropriate, assists with returns and helps keep entrances clean
and safe.
We know a one-size-fits-all-approach to our door coverage won’t work for our
more than 5,000 stores. To help ensure each store has the coverage it needs,
we’re using data on safety, security and shrink risks to guide us on how best to
staff our entrances. Where our data tells us the risk is higher, we’ll add
the new customer host.
We expect to fill about 9,000 of these new hourly positions that are specially
trained to both welcome customers as soon as they walk in and also help deter
would-be shoplifters.

Walmart says the gates help prevent theft, but you won't see them everywhere.
Store representatives say they're rolling out the new gates in 1,300 stores
this year. And Thomasville is the only known location in the Triad that's
using them so far.

Van Nuys, CA: Prosecutors Decline to File Against
99 Cent Store Detective
Who Punched Suspected Shoplifter
The
suspected shoplifter had finished gathering items into her bag and was about to
depart the busy 99 Cents Only Store in Van Nuys when she discovered the exit was
blocked--by the security guard. As she attempted to walk around him, he stepped
to the side and stayed in front of her, security camera video shows. Likewise,
when she tried to go around the other way, he stepped in front. Store customers
could hear the guard demand the woman surrender her bag for inspection, but she
was having none of it, and the security guard had to decide what he would do
next.
In the doorway of the Van Nuys 99 Cents Only Store Thursday, the guard decided
to reach around and try to take the woman's bag. The pair tussled for a few
seconds, but she kept her grip on the bag. It was at that point that the guard
was heard referring to the woman with a curse word, according to a witness Rony
Preza, who had begun recording with his cellphone camera as the tension level
escalated.

How new tech can help retailers protect staff and stock from criminals
By James Martin, Crime & Security Policy Advisor, British Retail
Consortium
A key factor appears to be the greater use of technology to deter, protect and
prosecute. The lessons are already being used to stop abusive behaviour before
it happens.
Considerable ingenuity is being applied to ‘tagging’ specific goods,
minimising the chances of theft escalating into violence.
Over the last few decades, we’ve all become comfortable with fixed CCTV
systems, and most of us would now be more concerned to shop in a store which
doesn’t have them than one that does. Many retailers are now also making use of
latest generation fixed and high-tech CCTV systems. Often managed from central
hubs, these systems identify incidents and allow communication between the store
and hub, including using the PA system remotely.
A logical extension of such systems is the use of bodyworn cameras. These
small, unobtrusive devices are an increasingly familiar part of daily life,
across a range of industries, as well as on car dashboards and attached to cycle
helmets.
Whilst they support prosecutions, their main function is to discourage attacks
in the first place. Originally adopted by the police, in many other areas of
life they are now a very valuable way to stop conflict before it happens.
Retailers are thinking carefully about how best to deploy these devices as part
of a blended approach. Protecting privacy will, obviously, be at the very
front of any considerations, and the public can take great comfort from the
strict legal framework that governs them.
These are just a few examples of how technology is helping to spot and deter
criminal activity. The solutions are not, however, purely technical: better
training can help. And this is a second area where retailers are taking
strides, rolling out conflict management courses that help take the risk out of
potential flashpoints.

49% of Shoppers Abandon a Retailer After Experiencing Credit Card Fraud
Strict Anti-Fraud Measures Can Also Turn Off Customers
Nearly half (49%) of consumers have reported being a victim of credit card fraud
where their card information was illegally used by someone else, according to a
survey from Riskified. Among these victims, 49% abandon the retailer entirely
after learning of the fraud, with 29% blaming the merchant that approved the
fraudulent purchase.
Retailers also can lose customers when they adopt strict anti-fraud measures.
Merchants often decline orders out of caution, which means they sometimes reject
good, honest customers. Up to 30% of shoppers say they have had their purchase
wrongly declined, and 57% of those declines happen to returning customers, with
a corresponding negative impact on their satisfaction and return shopping. These
false declines end up robbing retailers of as much as 5.5% of their annual
revenue.
Approximately 42% of shoppers who experienced a decline moved on, either
abandoning the purchase completely (28%) or shopping with a competitor instead
(14%). Retailers have to be smarter about how they review and approve orders if
they want to keep these shoppers, said Eyal Raab, VP of Business Development at
Riskified.

No Signature, No PIN, No Merchant Recourse
Card networks dropped POS signature
requirements last year, yet still do not require a PIN for chip cards - leaving
retailers liable for fraud and chargebacks.
In 2018, the major U.S. payment card networks dropped their signature
requirement for point-of-sale (POS) transactions, in part due to the security
capabilities of chip-embedded cards. While the U.S. migration to EMV chip
technology was intended to combat fraud, a recent study found that 60 million
U.S. cards were compromised between October 2017 and October 2018; of that
total, 75% of records were from card-present (CP) transactions, and 90% of those
CP cards had EMV chips. Monica Eaton-Cardone, an IT executive specializing in
risk management and fraud prevention, believes ongoing card fraud calls for
stricter security measures and better protections for merchants, who
increasingly bear the costs of fraud.
Eaton-Cardone, says that while EMV has the potential to be highly effective at
fighting card-present fraud, its execution in the U.S. has fallen short and
placed a disproportionate share of the burden on merchants. She notes that
chip-enabled cards are only part of the security equation; in other countries,
EMV is a “chip-and-PIN” system that requires cardholders to enter their personal
code at the point of sale. U.S. banks instead adopted a chip-and-sign protocol;
but since they dropped the signature mandate, the risk to merchants has
increased. Eaton-Cardone also points out that chip encryption only benefits
card-present retailers and has driven many criminals online, contributing to the
ongoing rise in CNP fraud that has plagued eCommerce merchants.

1 year later, Dick's Sporting Goods CEO Ed Stack still takes a tough stance on
guns
It's been roughly one year since Dick's Sporting Goods CEO Ed Stack took a
controversial stance on guns, pulling high-capacity magazines from stores and
halting the sale of firearms to anyone under 21 years old. Dick's Sporting
Goods' decision marked one of the strongest stances taken by corporate America
in the national gun debate. Retailers like Walmart and Kroger later followed.
On Monday, traveling to New York to accept the Committee Encouraging Corporate
Philanthropy's "Force for Good Award," Stack says he doesn't think twice about
the move. "We talk about it internally and I often say: If we had a mulligan,
we'd do it all over again," he said.
In fact, Stack is doing even more to get behind his company's efforts last year.
He, along with a handful of other CEOs, on Monday
signed onto a letter sent to Congress in support of the HR8 background check
bill. Background checks are something "both sides of the aisle can get behind
it," Stack said.

REGISTRATION ENDS IN 7 DAYS –
RESCUE Your Company Today!
The headlines are hard to miss. Just last week the nation was stunned by a
workplace shooting in Illinois where a disgruntled former employee stormed in to
the Aurora warehouse where he’d just been fired and killed five people.
That’s why Asfalis and PunchAlert are teaming up next month to bring you a can’t
miss panel called
Rescue Your Company From Unsafe Behaviors: Preventing Workplace Violence and
Vulnerabilities through Leadership Training, Strategies and Effective Hiring
Processes.
Vanessa Vaughn runs
Asfalis, an
agency that works with companies to come up with business continuity and crisis
management programs. Before coming to corporate America, Vaughn did terrorism
mitigation in the fields of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. From
there she transitioned to working with senior leadership teams in the business
community to implement strategies to reduce reputational, operational and
financial risks globally. Vaughn says, “Identifying critical functions within
key facilities and developing continuity plans to ensure the business can
recover losses was really intriguing for me.”
Vaughn says in today’s business environment it is crucial that leaders are ready
for anything. “The super bowl teams practice 90 percent of the time and 10
percent is execution. We help our customers play to win for the super bowl. How
much are your employee’s worth to you? What are you willing to do, to mitigate
violence in the workplace from happening? What value do you place on your
customers? We help by bringing experience and education to our attendees. Our
seminars also create a community of people that are committed to results and
outcomes.”
The same can be said for
PunchAlert, an all in one safety communication solution for
organizations. PunchAlert allows companies to manage incidents, send
announcements, even crowd source for help in an emergency. PunchAlert’s Ashley
Davis explains, “Through PunchAlert, the organization’s administrators and
security team will be alerted immediately, giving them the ability to quickly
triage, manage and resolve the incident. Not only does PunchAlert provide for
timely reaction to the event, it also supports the recovery process through the
automatically generated incident report.
Picture an incident taking place on an organization's campus. The leadership and
their security team would want to know immediately so they could triage, manage,
and resolve the incident in a timely manner. PunchAlert gives them the
opportunity to do everything necessary – including involving local emergency
responders and providing them with real-time information.” That’s just one of
the tools the Rescue Your Company panelists will talk about.
Davis says “Rescue Your Company is an opportunity to learn from industry experts
who have been there, done that, and are still currently dealing with it. They
are sharing their experiences both positive and negative so others do not have
to recreate the wheel especially when it comes to preventing workplace violence
and vulnerabilities through leadership training, strategies, and effective
hiring practices. Knowing you have local resources to call on and network with
is a bonus of attending this seminar.
Vaughn adds, “The panelists are going to bring knowledge from their experiences
with minimal resources, low budgets and innovative ways that they have been able
to deliver value in the hiring process. They will also share about challenges
with safety and security in the workplace and how these have evolved overtime,
as well as what they are doing to overcome.

Breach at PoS Firm Hits Hundreds of U.S. Restaurants, Hotels
Point-of-sale (PoS) solutions provider
North Country Business Products, whose products
are used at over 6,500 locations across the United States,
recently disclosed a data breach that resulted in the exposure of payment card
data.
The company said it learned on January 4 of suspicious activity in certain
client networks. An investigation assisted by a third-party cyber forensics firm
revealed that malicious actors had deployed a piece of malware to some of its
customers between January 3 and January 24, 2019.
The malware was designed to harvest data belonging to individuals who used their
payment cards at one of the impacted North Country customers. Exposed data
includes cardholder names, card numbers, expiration dates, and CVV codes.
North Country has set up a dedicated website where it has provided a
list of the restaurants and hotels impacted by
the incident. The list includes 137
locations, mostly in Arizona and Minnesota, but also in Louisiana, Iowa,
Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Oregon, and
Ohio.

Equifax Expects U.S., Canada Watchdogs to Press Cases Over 2017 Breach
$565M spent on technology and security infrastructure
Regulators in the U.S. and Canada intend to press forward their cases against
Equifax Inc. over a massive 2017 hack that
exposed personal information of more than 140
million people.
On Thursday, Equifax disclosed in a securities filing the Federal Trade
Commission and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau intend to seek legal
remedy in connection with the 2017 data breach, including civil penalties in the
case of the CFPB.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada also intends “to make certain
findings and recommendations,” Equifax said, without elaborating.
Equifax has been trying to mend its reputation and regain industry
certifications. It said it is cooperating with investigations and related
matters, and losses from litigation of regulatory investigations “are reasonably
possible.” But the company said it was too early to estimate.
Equifax said it has spent more than $565 million
since disclosing the data breach and investing heavily in technology and
security infrastructure.
The U.K.’s Information Commissioner’s Office, which oversees data protection in
the country, last year fined Equifax £500,000 for failing to protect the
personal information of U.K. citizens in connection with the 2017 cyberattack .
Equifax said in the filing that it continues to cooperate with criminal
investigation into the actors responsible for the hack.

What is the Cloud?
I am asked often what the “cloud” is and where does the info go. If you store
your photos in the cloud they are being stored in the either on the internet, in
the Deep Web (the hidden part of the internet) or in a data center to which you
connect directly. The cloud or cloud computing just refers to the idea of using
someone else’s computers to store information; the internet is basically the
road that gets you there. |

Why AI is the intelligent option for ecommerce
Simply being online, however, isn’t enough anymore. Consumers expect an ever
more seamless, intuitive and personal omnichannel experience—and there’s one
emerging technology that is making that possible from the smallest of retailers
to the Amazons and Walmarts: artificial intelligence (AI).
Take leading fashion streetwear and sportswear brand Footasylum. It has seen a
28 per cent increase in email campaign revenue from hyper-personalised marketing
communications since implementing AI into its ecommerce arm. Becoming an
AI-driven retailer has also led to a 75 per cent reduction in cost per social
click during a recent trial.
Regit—an online marketplace that allows consumers to buy, sell and maintain
their cars—has also worked with Peak to become AI-driven. Using the technology
to better predict when customers were going to change cars by creating machine
learning models meant the company was able to create a lead score that was then
assigned to customers in its CRM.
The result has been a 27 per cent increase in sales, while also reducing
operational costs by 35 per cent.
AI can help retailers manage their inventory more effectively by improving their
demand forecasting. By giving them insights into what customers want, and when
they want it, ecommerce businesses are better able to anticipate demand and
optimise their inventory accordingly.
Our report found that, when companies use
AI, the median number of stock days was 43—a 9 per cent reduction on the 47
median stock days of companies not using AI. That’s less time in storage and
quicker realisation of revenue.digitalcommerce360.com

Two suspects were arrested Tuesday morning behind a Meijer store after
Louisville Metro Police officials said they hit an officer's vehicle in a stolen
car and exchanged gunfire with the officer. The officer noticed a suspicious
vehicle that was determined to have been stolen around 2:50 a.m. Tuesday behind
a motel. Two male suspects were inside the vehicle, and one of them shot a gun
at the officer, who returned fire. The suspects then drove away and hit the LMPD
vehicle. Officers found the vehicle a short distance away unoccupied. The LMPD
Air Unit was able to locate the suspects in a field behind the Meijer store on
Hurstbourne Lane. The suspects were taken into custody and were not injured.

Tip of the Day
Sponsored

Social networking sites have in essence dissolved any distance between the
professional and the personal life of an executive. They enable employers to see
every aspect of one's life at any given moment and can show historical patterns
that resumes may not overcome in the future. What a person does on the net stays
on the net, what is written will be read and, as time goes on, background checks
will include social networks that go well beyond Linkedin. On the flip side, one
could do well to maintain a sense of professionalism in every thing they do on
the net and their profiles.
