Contractors/Freelancers Cause of Most Workforce Related Security Incidents
A new report reveals that nearly half of businesses are unaware of any potential
employee issues prior to a workforce incident, and 87 percent say third-party
contractors and freelancers are the cause of the risk.
The Security Executives on the Future of Insider Threat Management report by
Endera examines the business impacts of workforce related incidents and the
major challenges found in securing the modern day workforce.
On average, companies suffer from at least 3 workforce related incidents a week
– that adds up to 156 incidents per year
• 87%
of security executives reported that contractors/freelancers are most likely to
be the cause of workforce related security incidents at their company;
Two-thirds (64%) reported that supply chain/third party vendors were the most
likely cause
• 55%
of respondents admit they are struggling to limit the number of workforce
related incidents and 44% are not aware of any potential workforce or personnel
issues prior to an incident.
• Almost
40% of respondents reported that their workforce had lost confidence in the
organization's ability to keep them safe.
• 75%
of respondents report that their organizations conduct background checks prior
to hiring members of the workforce, but only just under half (48%) report that
these checks are continued on a periodic basis
“Hands down, people are a company’s most valuable asset. But, as the definition
of the ‘workforce’ expands with the rise of the gig economy and use of third
party vendors, workforce risk and insider threats are equally becoming a global
issue,” said Raj Ananthanpillai, Chief Executive Officer of Endera. “This survey
sheds light on the fact that enterprises are struggling to reduce the number of
workforce related incidents, which have major ramifications on workforce
retention, brand reputation, and a company’s finances.”

Retailers In Some States May Be Forced To Accept Cash
Stores and restaurants in several states would be required to do something
pretty basic if certain lawmakers have their way: accept their customers’ cash.
The legislation comes amid a worldwide move toward “cashless payments” using
cards or mobile devices, which supporters say are safer, quicker and more
convenient. But critics say an outright ban on cash discriminates against those
without credit or bank accounts, and raises concerns about privacy and data
security.
The New Jersey Legislature and the Philadelphia City Council have passed
measures this year that would ban cashless stores. New York City, Washington,
San Francisco and Chicago are weighing similar bills.
Massachusetts already has a
little-known law requiring retail stores to accept both cash and credit.
Stephanie Martz, senior vice president and general counsel of the National
Retail Federation, argued that businesses should be able to decide themselves
how to operate. “We don’t see that going away anytime soon,” she said.

New Skimming Technique Threatens C-Store Retailers
Cellular relay skimmers bring new threat to data security for c-stores
The National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) warns that thieves are
using a new skimming technique to steal credit card information at the pump.
The U.S. Secret Service’s Philadelphia Field Office alerted NACS to the issue.
According to the Secret Service, thieves are using a cellular relay skimmer
located in the contactless near field communication (NFC) reader on the exterior
of a gas pump. When customers make a contactless payment, the thief then gains
the contactless card’s primary account number “over-the-air” before it reaches
the point of interaction (payment terminal). NACS pointed out that
point-to-point encryption cannot defend against this technique. It can also
transmit the stolen data wirelessly via text message, allowing real-time use of
the data.
Questions relating to this alert can be directed to the GIOC at gioc@usss.dhs.gov

The cybersecurity legislation agenda
Steep Fines & Prison Time For Sr's?
Introduction of the Consumer Data Protection Act, worth watching
A key problem in grappling with such a complex issue as cybersecurity in
Congress — and in Washington in general — is the diffused responsibility spawned
by the wide-ranging, interconnected nature of the topic. Representative Jim
Langevin (D-RI), a member of the Armed Services and Homeland Security
Committees, and one of the founders of the Congressional Cybersecurity Caucus,
flagged this stumbling block at the 2019 State of the Net conference in January
by calling for consolidation in Congress over cybersecurity.
For the time being, the multiplicity of congressional committees and
subcommittees with jurisdiction over cybersecurity combined with the complexity
of the topic, which bleeds into other issues such as privacy and national
security, makes it difficult to gain the momentum needed to actually pass
meaningful cybersecurity legislation.
In particular, Senator Ron Wyden’s planned introduction of the Consumer
Data Protection Act, is worth watching. That bill would empower the FTC
to establish minimum privacy and cybersecurity standards, impose steep fines
(up to 4 percent of revenues) on companies that violate privacy and security
standards and even permit prison sentences for senior executives for
their companies’ privacy and security violations.
Representative Langevin said he plans to reintroduce a bill he sponsored in the
wake of Equifax’s massive data breach in 2017, the Personal Data
Notification and Protection Act, which provides for a single national breach
notification standard, giving companies 30 days to disclose any breach of
consumer data.

Buy Entire Digital Identity $1,220
Value of Stolen Card and Amazon Account Details Rockets
Researchers have seen large spikes in the value of certain stolen data being
traded on the dark web, but log-ins for some accounts are selling for as little
as $2.
Top10VPN’s first Dark Web Market Price Index report revealed debit card
details as the most valuable category, selling for an average of $250, a spike
of 270% year-on-year.
Amazon credentials jumped 237% in value to just over $30, while Facebook
(75%), Uber (60%) and Netflix (29%) log-ins also recorded sharp increases over
their 2018 price. They’re all selling for around the same price, at $9 for
Facebook, $11 for Uber and just under $11 for Netflix.
Twitter log-ins surged in value by 21% year-on-year but stand at just $2 today.
Top10VPN estimated that fraudsters can now buy an individual’s entire
digital identity for around $1220.

From Distrust to Trusted - The Cloud Gains Acceptance
As Businesses Move Critical Data to Cloud, Security Risks Abound
Companies think their data is safer in the public cloud than in on-prem data
centers, but the transition is driving security issues.
The cloud is fraught with security challenges: Shadow IT, shared responsibility,
and poor visibility put data at risk.
These insights come from the second annual
"Oracle and KPMG Cloud Threat Report 2019," a deep dive into enterprise
cloud security trends. Between 2018 and 2020, researchers predict the number of
organizations with more than half of their data in the cloud to increase by a
factor of 3.5.
Organizations have begun to test business-critical services in the cloud in
recent years, Jensen says. Within the past couple of years there has been a
"tipping point" at which a large percentage of businesses are diving in. More
than 70% of survey respondents say the majority of their cloud-based data is
sensitive, an increase from 50% who said the same last year.
The rise of automation has contributed to a change in mindset and businesses'
sense of safety, Jensen continues. And while the cloud brings several benefits,
the expectation that it solves all problems is flawed. "Cloud does still take
work," he adds, and does require human effort.
CISOs on the Cloud Security Sidelines
Most (82%) of respondents polled have experienced security events due to
confusion in the shared responsibility model. It's not for lack of effort:
Nintey-one percent have formal methodologies for cloud use; however, 71% think
employees violate policies and lead to malware and data compromise.
While many cloud security providers offer native security controls, it's up
to the organization to apply and manage those controls or ones offered by
third parties
The Problems with Poor Visibility
Visibility remains the top cloud security challenge, report 38% of respondents.
Thirty percent say they are challenged by the inability of existing network
security controls to provide visibility into public cloud workloads. Jensen says
this finding is consistent with 2017 findings.
Shadow IT is a key driver of cloud security challenges. Most
organizations report having a formal policy to review and approve cloud
applications; however, 92% of this year's respondents are concerned those
policies are being violated. Nearly 70% are aware of a "moderate or significant"
amount of shadow IT apps in use, and 50% say the use of unsanctioned cloud apps
has led to unauthorized access to corporate data.

Criminals Gamify ATM Hacking
Hackers have used so-called ATM jackpotting malware to force machines to release
cash. A new type of malware goes a step further by turning ATMs into slot
machines, Wired reports. A hacker with physical or network access to an ATM
can install the malware, which replaces the machine’s normal display with
buttons labeled “SPIN.” Hackers are brazen with ATM malware in part because it’s
not particularly complicated. The machines often run outdated and unsupported
versions of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system and the main barrier is
avoiding law enforcement.

European standards org releases consumer IoT
cybersecurity standard
The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has released ETSI TS
103 645, a standard for cybersecurity in the Internet of Things, to establish a
security baseline for internet-connected consumer products and provide a basis
for future IoT certification schemes.
TS 103 645 requires implementers to forgo the use of universal default
passwords, which have been the source of many security issues. It also requires
implementation of a vulnerability disclosure policy to allow security
researchers and others to report security issues.
It mandates that all credentials and security-sensitive data is stored securely
within services and on devices and that no hard-coded credentials in device
software are used.
Consumer consent must be obtained in a "valid" way and can be withdraw it at any

Can Retailers Push Back Against Surging
Account Takeovers?
Account takeovers are becoming bigger business for criminals — or, at least,
the business of preventing account takeovers in the digital retail and
payments realm is becoming an increasing focus of companies and security
experts.
That increasing risk is driving innovation, as PYMNTS has also documented.
Such innovation strives to balance one of the central tensions found in
eCommerce and digital payments in 2019: how to onboard and authenticate
consumers as quickly and seamlessly as possible — or, how to guide them from
browsing to buying — while also protecting them and the institution from
fraud. After all, fraudsters are smart and experienced enough to, say,
defeat those security-question defenses, and there is no doubt that
countless user name and password combinations, along with other stolen data,
are widely available on the digital black market.
According to security experts and reports, account takeover generally was
most used for high-end products such as designer fashion, drones and other
expensive electronics, luxury perfumes and cosmetics. In recent years,
however, it has been growing rapidly in the $100 to $500 transaction range,
causing the method to spike across many more transactions in apparel and
consumer electronics.
Among the current targets of this fraud method is Touch of Modern, a
members-only eCommerce operation that sells fashionable men’s apparel and
other products, and which now uses Castle technology to guard against
account takeovers.
According to a
case study, after “a series of high-profile breaches including LinkedIn,
Yahoo, and others … [Touch of Modern] started seeing more and more
brute-force attacks, as hackers were trying those password lists on their
site.
The landscape of fraud and the work of fraud prevention keeps changing. A
recent PYMNTS webinar, in fact, discussed the importance of looking past
the chargeback rate to calculate the true cost of fraud, and to build better
fraud prevention teams. Account takeovers promise to be a big part of those
efforts and conversations over the foreseeable future.

Tip of the Day
Sponsored
by Vector Security Networks
|
Sometimes it's not what you say that's important as much as it's what they feel
six months after the conversation. Being a good wordsmith is a skill, but
ensuring that what you say leaves the right impression long term is a true art
and one that is only reached by reflection and intention.
Just a Thought, Gus
