TOTAL RETAIL LOSS Report

HELP REQUIRED WITH NEW RESEARCH ON TOTAL RETAIL LOSS

In 2016 Professor Beck published a report on the Total Retail Loss (TRL) concept (https://tinyurl.com/y8v5o2p2) which aimed to provide the retail industry with a new way to define and measure how losses impact upon retail organisations. Since then it has begun to be adopted by retailers around the world to varying degrees.

He is now starting some new research to develop this work further, looking particularly to:

1. Find out about levels of awareness and use of the Total Retail Loss concept.
2. Understand how it should be adapted to keep it fit for purpose.
3. Consider the barriers to its use.
4. Assemble tools and techniques to help those who may want to use it in the future.

The first part of this research is a short online survey of retailers from around the world on their levels of awareness of the TRL concept. He would be very grateful if you could find 10 minutes to complete this survey, which can be found at:

   TOTAL RETAIL LOSS SURVEY LINK

The deadline for replying is 28th February 2019. Thank you very much for taking the time to contribute to this research - your support is very much appreciated. The results of this work will be made freely available in the summer of 2019. Please do contact Professor Beck if you would like to find out more about this research.

Bezos Security Chief Leading Blackmail, Extortion Investigation Has Protected Stars for Decades
The man Jeff Bezos tapped to help determine who might have leaked the billionaire’s personal text messages and photos to the National Enquirer has spent decades working as a kind of secret service agent to some of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

Gavin de Becker, Mr. Bezos’ personal security chief, is known throughout the entertainment industry for keeping A-list talent safe from the dangerous trappings of fame: stalkers, death threats and obsessive fans.

Since graduating from Beverly Hills High School in the early 1970s, Mr. de Becker, 64 years old, has found himself in proximity to some of the biggest stars and scandals in recent Hollywood history. By 19 he was helping run security for Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. By his 30s, he was protecting Cher, John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, as celebrities grew more aware of security concerns in the wake of John Lennon’s murder and the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan.

Nothing in his career, though, resembled the past several weeks. On Thursday, Mr. Bezos, the founder of Amazon.com Inc., published a blog post accusing National Enquirer parent company American Media LLC of blackmail and said Mr. de Becker was leading an investigation into who leaked personal messages sent between Mr. Bezos and his girlfriend. The investigation also is trying to determine motives of the Enquirer, he said. wsj.com

Bezos probe concludes mistress' brother was Enquirer source
Private investigators working for Jeff Bezos have concluded that the brother of the Amazon CEO's mistress leaked the couple's intimate text messages to the National Enquirer, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Monday.

The findings add to the intrigue surrounding the clash between the pro-Trump tabloid and the world's richest man. Bezos' investigators have suggested the Enquirer's coverage of his affair was driven by dirty politics. Trump has been highly critical of Bezos over his ownership of The Washington Post and Amazon, and the Post's coverage of the White House.

The brother, Michael Sanchez, is a supporter of President Donald Trump and an acquaintance of Trump allies Roger Stone and Carter Page. He is also the manager of his sister, Lauren Sanchez, a former TV anchor. The investigators have not said how they believe Michael Sanchez came into possession of his sister's intimate messages. startribune.com

UK: National Retail Crime Steering Group tackles abusive and violent attacks
510,000 retail assaults/threats in 2017 - Up 150% over 2016

The Minister for Crime, Safeguarding and Vulnerability, Victoria Atkins, is examining options for providing further protections for shop workers from violence and abuse. The call for evidence is intended to help strengthen the evidence base and look at all options for addressing these crimes.

Chairing a meeting of the National Retail Crime Steering Group today, which includes members such as the British Retail Consortium and the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS), Victoria Atkins discussed proposals for a call to evidence. These include how to protect retail workers from abuse and violence that often occur from age-restricted sales, such as cigarettes and alcohol.

The Home Office’s Commercial Victimisation Survey estimated that in 2017, workers from the wholesale and retail sector were victim to around 510,000 incidents of assaults and threats, more than twice the number recorded in 2016 (203,000 incidents).

The National Retail Crime Steering Group brings government, police and industry together to improve the response to crimes affecting the sector, including assaults and theft. Today the group will focus exclusively on the response to violence and abuse toward shop workers.

The Home Office will additionally provide £50,000 of funding for a sector-led communications campaign to raise awareness of the wide ranging offences that may be used to address this behaviour. gov.uk

US: Acting Attorney General Matthew G. Whitaker Delivers Remarks to the National Sheriffs’ Association’s Winter Conference
When President Trump first took office, violent crime had been rising sharply for two years.

From 2014 to 2016, the violent crime rate went up by nearly seven percent nationwide. Robberies went up. Assaults went up by over 8 percent. Rape went up by nearly 13 percent. Murder went up by a shocking 21 percent.

This team effort inspired us at the Department to ask how we could help you replicate that success elsewhere on our border. Phil and Jon have been working with you to create a Real-Time Intelligence Center that will empower Border sheriffs to share intelligence and interdict drug traffickers.

In the last fiscal year, the Justice Department charged the greatest number of violent crime defendants since we started to track this category more than 25 years ago. We broke the previous record by nearly 15 percent.

We also charged more than 15,000 defendants with federal firearms offenses, which is a record. We broke that record by a margin of 17 percent. justice.gov

Top Management at Rent-A-Center Called "Bunch of Crooks" in Court
Stealing Intellectual Property? Looking Inside the Books - Wouldn't be the 1st Time
Using a Merger Deal to Copy Another Retailer?

Vintage Capital partner Brian Kahn while on the stand during a trial in Delaware on Monday said the directors and top management at Rent-A-Center are "a bunch of crooks."

Rent-A-Center terminated its merger agreement with Vintage, valued at $1.4 billion with the assumption of debt, in December surprising Vintage officials who said both sides had agreed that government antitrust review would push the closing into 2019

"It is fraud. They're a bunch of crooks. They absolutely used this process, used this merger agreement, to come in and get everything we did that made Buddy's grow over the last six or seven years," said Kahn during questioning by Vintage cousel, Tariq Mundiya of Willkie Farr & Gallagher.

Kahn said he and Rent-A-Center CEO Mitch Fadel are longtime friends and that they agreed to the merger when the Plano-based rent-to-own retailer was struggling, according to the Law 360 article published Tuesday.

At stake is a $126.5 million reverse breakup fee that Rent-A-Center is demanding. dallasnews.com

Luxury department store Barney's jumps on the cannabis train with a fancy head shop in Beverly Hills called High End.

The company may also open the head shop in other states, including New York if recreational cannabis becomes legal there. nytimes.com

Toys R Us plots a second act with new look, new name - "Tru Kids"
Toys R Us liquidated its business last year, unable to emerge from bankruptcy after a crippling 2017 holiday season. Its lenders, including Solus Alternative Asset Management and the Angelo Gordon investment firm, took control of the company's intellectual property, which include the Toys R Us, Babies R Us and Geoffrey brand names.

As of Jan. 20, several former Toys R US executives began running a company called "Tru Kids" to manage those brands, said Richard Barry, new president of Tru Kids and former chief merchandising officer of Toys R Us.

The full business plan for Tru Kid is still a work in progress, Barry told CNBC. The new company is exploring multiple options, including stand-alone stores, pop-up shops or a partnership like the one Solus and Angelo Gordon previously explored with Kroger. When asked whether Tru Kids would partner with Amazon, Barry said he would "not take anything off the table at all." cnbc.com

Trump Signs Executive Order Promoting Artificial Intelligence
President Trump signed an executive order Monday meant to spur the development and regulation of artificial intelligence, technology that many experts believe will define the future of everything from consumer products to health care to warfare.

A.I. experts across industry, academia and government have long called on the Trump administration to make the development of artificial intelligence a major priority.

In a briefing with reporters on Sunday, a senior administration official said the White House would increase efforts to educate American workers in the field. The administration plans to work with the National Council for the American Worker to create educational efforts through industry and academia, and it will call on government agencies to develop fellowships related to A.I. nytimes.com

Dunkin' Donuts accounts compromised in 2nd credential stuffing attack in 3 months
Dunkin' Donuts announced today that it was the victim of a credential stuffing attack during which hackers gained access to customer accounts. This marks the second time in three months that the coffee shop chain notifies users of account breaches following credential stuffing attacks.

Credentials stuffing is a cyber-security term that describes a type of cyber-attack where hackers take combinations of usernames and passwords leaked at other sites and use them to gain (illegal) access on accounts on new sites.

Dunkin' Donuts reported a first credential stuffing attack at the end of November (the actual attack occurred on October 31). Today, the company reported a second credential stuffing attack (attack happened on January 10).

Just like in the first, hackers used user credentials leaked at other sites to gain entry to DD Perks rewards accounts, which provide repeat customers with a way to earn points and use them to get free beverages or discounts for other Dunkin' Donuts products. The type of information typically stored inside a DD Perks account includes a user's first and last names, email address (also used as username), a 16-digit DD Perks account number, and a DD Perks QR code. zdnet.com

Experian Global Poll: US Suffers the Most Online Fraud
U.S. Business & Consumers Getting Hammered More Than Anyone Else
New data from the credit reporting firm shows the sheer scale of online activity in the US also has made businesses and consumers there prime targets.

Consumers and businesses in the United States appear to be experiencing substantially more online fraud than their counterparts in other regions of the world.

The situation is driving an increased focus on technologies for detecting and preventing online fraud, a new survey by Experian shows.

The results showed eight-in-10 US businesses reporting an increase in fraud losses over the past 12 months, compared to 55% in Europe, the Middle East, and the rest of Asia. Much of the losses were tied to fraud resulting from account takeovers and the use of fake and stolen identities.

Experian's survey shows that some 40% of consumers worldwide have experienced at least one fraudulent incident online. Here again, the incidence of fraud was much higher among US consumers than individuals elsewhere. darkreading.com

A Federal Data Privacy Law Could Clarify Rules But No Solid Proposal Is in Sight
While federal lawmakers meet, discuss, form task forces, consult industry and do the sundry other things lawmakers do, states are on the move. California’s far-reaching consumer privacy law, which is set to take effect in January 2020, appears to have spurred on several states to entertain ideas for setting new limits on how organizations can use consumer information.

At the federal level, some big technology companies—notably
Apple Inc. and Microsoft Corp.—have said they support a nationwide law to simplify and clarify the rules. But that’s been slow-going and states are pressing ahead, WSJ Pro’s Adam Janofsky reports.

States Follow in California’s Wake on Data Privacy Legislation

California is setting the pace for strict privacy laws in the U.S. as lawmakers in at least eight states have put forward data privacy bills in recent weeks.

States including Massachusetts, New Mexico, New York, Utah and Washington are considering laws that would restrict how businesses gather, share and handle personal information. Many of the laws are modeled after the California Consumer Privacy Act, a sweeping data privacy bill that was signed into law last June.

Common features of state proposals include the right for residents to know what information is collected and request that their data is not sold, said Ms. Illman. These features are part of Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation, enacted last May, and California's privacy act, which goes into effect next January. cybersecurity.cmail19.com

How ‘Dynamic Friction’ Could Be Online Fraud’s Kryptonite
In the latest edition of the PYMNTS Masterclass video series, Kevin Lee, trust and safety architect at Sift, dives deep into the new landscape of fraud, and gives specific advice about how to best counter it. Sure, everyone knows fraudsters are becoming more sophisticated and organized — but how many know what to really do about it? Besides that Masterclass video, Lee, along with Karen Webster, will discuss this subject further in today’s PYMNTS webinar entitled “Building a Trust and Safety Team from the Ground Up.”

In the new Masterclass video, Lee summed up the evolution of fraud over the past decade or so, providing an observation that might lead to some anxious nights for merchants. No longer does fraud typically mean “one individual” trying to break into an eCommerce platform. “Now, different types of bots and scripts attack platforms, not one by one but thousands at a time,” he said.

And that’s not all: Fraud today involves relatively complicated — compared to a decade or so ago — attempts to take over legitimate accounts or create enduring fake ones. As well, retailers handle much more than payments these days, of course: Digital commerce means delivery, content and other factors that can also give criminals an opening.

That all presents numerous challenges for any retailers interested in avoiding the bad PR, litigation and loss of revenue that typically follows a breach or hack. Among them is building better fraud prevention defenses without alienating honest consumers and existing and potential customers. To put it another way, the challenge is to stop criminals without introducing too much friction that can result in customers giving up on creating accounts or abandoning online shopping carts. pymnts.com

Bethesda, MD: Two Sentenced for Shooting at Montgomery County Mall
Two men who pleaded guilty to a shooting at a Maryland mall were sentenced Monday. The shooting in a garage at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda last March was a result of an ongoing feud between Lucas Graves and David Montalvo and two other men. Prosecutors said they stalked their targets. In the days and hours leading up to the shooting, they were seen at Montgomery Mall outside and inside the Nordstrom where one of the men worked. They enlisted others to help track down their prey until they confronted them in the garage and opened fire. Graves was sentenced to 20 years, and Montalvo was sentenced to 15 years. nbcwashington.com

Tip of the Day

When anyone goes for an interview you've got to play to win. You should not allow: any outside variable, any future promotion thoughts or promises, your guilt feelings towards your current employer or boss, your preconceived opinions of the possible future employer, or any miss-step in the process on the part of the future employer disrupt or impact your performance. All interviews have long range implications on your career. The executives interviewing you are part of a community and you'll run into them again at another company. So if you do get involved and go for an interview, commit yourself all the way and play to win. It doesn't mean you've got to take the job. It just means you have to perform at 100%.

Just a Thought,
Gus
