Creating a Security Culture & Solving the Human Problem
People are the biggest weakness to security breaches,
but can also be your organization's biggest defense

Through nearly a dozen years of experience at the FBI and now at Qualtrics, I've seen that many of the most successful hackers no longer first look for software vulnerabilities. They're coming after your people. The reason is simple: It's cheaper, it's easier, and it works.

Massive telecom data breach? Unprotected vendor server. Prominent media company? Stolen credentials. Website with compromising emails? Former contractor. All of these major breaches resulted from mistakes of individuals. The threat vector is you.

Despite years of education, millions of pages of policy, and pervasive annual mandatory trainings, 60% of security professionals rank employee carelessness or negligence as a top threat, up from 44% in 2015, according to the EY Global Information Security Survey. Fully 66% of all cyber insurance claims stemmed from employee negligence or malfeasance, according to a 2017 report from Willis Towers Watson.

Start from the Top

The most effective training program in the world will have a hard time gaining traction among employees if they don’t see those precautions and practices being demonstrated by leadership. Without an example from the top, the environment for a security-minded culture to develop won't exist.

This culture is crucial for the same reason public health officials stress the necessity of herd immunity via vaccinations: If the bulk of a population is protected against a threat, that population has a much lower risk of being damaged by that threat. Protecting Retail Profits With Artificial Intelligence

What qualifies as AI for profit protection?
While a robotic security guard might help some retailers with surveillance, I am talking about a broader application of AI: It could help protect retail profits by using advanced analytics to develop models that are then employed by a computer to analyze data from a broad range of sources. As the models are used, the outcomes are fed back into them, which incorporates the information in future actions or decisions; the system learns and adapts without human intervention. It makes simple decisions in real time. A few examples of AI include machine learning, deep learning and natural language processing. The largest retailers have used AI for many years to add efficiencies to their businesses in a variety of ways, including marketing, pricing, logistics, risk management, store management, fraud detection, etc.

Where should you start?
Retailers can use AI to reduce losses resulting from error, faulty processes and intentional fraud. According to the 2018 National Retail Security Survey from the National Retail Federation, more than 50% of retail shrink (the difference between actual on-hand inventory and the inventory level recorded in the computer system) was due to employee theft or paperwork errors. These types of losses leave a data trail that can be detected through data analytics. Typically, retailers use an exception reporting system to detect shrink, but I believe using a system with AI models built in could yield far better results.

Another way AI can reduce loss is to model the effectiveness of loss prevention solutions before buying them. Retailers invest heavily in infrastructure — cameras, anti-theft tagging systems and more. Instead of buying and trying, a retailer can use AI to predict a solution’s usefulness prior to purchase. White-Collar Robots Are Coming for Jobs
A combination of AI and globalization could reshape the workforce like nothing we’ve seen before.

Until recently, most white-collar, service-sector and professional jobs were shielded from automation by humans’ cognitive monopoly. Computers couldn’t think, so jobs that required any type of thinking - nuclear physics professor, florist and everything in between - required a human.

But a form of artificial intelligence called “machine learning” has given computers skills like reading, writing, speaking and recognizing subtle patterns. Thinking computers like Amelia are opening a new phase of automation and bringing the pluses and minuses to a whole new class of workers - those who work in offices rather than farms and factories. 55% of Online Businesses Report Higher Fraud Losses in Last Year, ATO Main Culprit: Report
E-commerce businesses that are able to build meaningful relationships with digital customers will likely experience continued growth as the marketplace expands, according to a new report. In the 2019 Global Identity & Fraud Report, global data aggregator Experian found that 70 percent of digital consumers would share more personal data with organizations that provide greater online security and convenience.

Yet, the research found that even those marketplaces that are effectively mitigating online fraud have potentially left a full third of their digital customers vulnerable.

“Fifty-five percent of businesses surveyed reported an increase in online fraud-related losses over the past 12 months, predominantly around account origination and account takeover attacks—both particularly damaging to brand reputation,” the authors wrote. “Even though fraudsters are reportedly growing more adept at exploiting weaknesses in the new services and features that businesses are adopting, nearly 75 percent of businesses globally reporting an improvement in their online security over the past year. However, businesses have experienced increased fraud losses and new fraud attacks during that period as well—leading us to believe businesses may be investing in the wrong capabilities.” cardnotpresent.com

eCommerce credit card fraud is nearly an inevitability
Riskified surveyed 5,000 US-based consumers aged 18 and older about their online shopping behaviors, experience with and prevalence of credit card fraud, repeat shopping likelihood and customer satisfaction to develop a full picture of how consumers react to a number of common shopping experiences.

The results are worrisome for both consumers and merchants, as roughly half of respondents reported experience with credit card fraud and 30% had their purchase wrongly declined, with a corresponding negative impact on their satisfaction and return shopping.

For US consumers, eCommerce credit card fraud is nearly an inevitability. Overall, 49% of consumers surveyed reported having been a victim of credit card fraud, where their card information was illegally used by someone else. But that percentage grew with age, suggesting that becoming a victim is only a matter of time.

Unfortunately for merchants, the obvious costs of fraud aren’t the only costs. 49% of customers reported that they do not return to an online retailer after a fraud incident has taken place, meaning that the merchant will pay the cost of the fraud and lose future customers.

But that’s only part of the cost of fraud. Merchants often decline orders out of caution, and previous research conducted by Riskified found that fear of fraud costs even more than the fraud itself, as merchants unnecessarily reject good customers. This survey bears that out, as 30% of respondents reported having an order declined, and 57% of those declines happen to returning customers, squandering the good will merchants had built. The survey further found that roughly 42% of shoppers who experienced a decline moved on, either abandoning the purchase completely (28%) or shopping with a competitor instead (14%). helpnetsecurity.com

Amazon achieves record profits for third quarter running
Q4 online store net sales up 13%; physical store sales down 3%
Amazon on Thursday said that fourth quarter net sales rose 20% to $72.4 billion from $60.5 billion in the year-ago quarter; North America net sales rose 18% to $44.1 billion. Services sales rises overshadowed product net sales growth, as subscriptions rose 25% to $3.96 billion, "other" (mostly advertising, according to executives) rose 95% to $3.39 billion and AWS cloud computing sales rose 45% to $7.43 billion.

Third-party sales (up 27% to $13.38 billion) grew faster than first-party sales, according to a company press release. Online stores net sales in the quarter grew 13% year over year to $39.8 billion as physical store sales fell 3% to $4.4 billion, the company also said in its release (although CFO Brian Olsavsky clarified to analysts that an "apples to apples" comparison, taking into account omnichannel sales that are counted as e-commerce and a calendar shift, would bring brick-and-mortar sales up to a 6% rise). retaildive.com

Pasadena, CA: Police seeking Robbery suspects who stole 18 cell phones
The video taken from exterior cameras are a part of an investigation into an armed robbery incident on Jan. 21 during which three men made off with 18 cell phones and about $600 from a Metro PCS store on North Lake Avenue. While inside, the suspects ordered the employee to open the cash register, which she did, said Pasadena police Lt. Pete Hettema.
