The Hump Day 'Big Hump'
 

Detectives arrested a UPS driver in Louisville who they suspect stole dozens of packages and some factory inventory, selling at least some of what he stole. Louisville Metro Police believe Jon Keen, 38, may be involved in the theft of more than 60 packages from various victims, according to one of his arrest citations.

What led officers to Keen was likely a shipment of custom luxury watches that disappeared. The victim, a Royal Air Force Captain, told police he designed seven custom watches from the Bremont Watch Company worth more than $45,000. He never received the watches from UPS. The Bremont Watch Company identified the missing watches on an eBay account. A UPS detective found that eBay seller was based in Louisville and worked for UPS.  Read more

R-CISC Expands Member Engagement Team with New Member Manager and Program Director

The R-CISC recently added two positions to its Member Engagement Team to accelerate its program of products and services for members.

Amy Tate has joined as program director with more than 14 years of experience in program management and leadership for the technology services industry. She has a consistent track record of managing large and complex projects from initiation to closing and has worked with all levels of management. As a certified Project Management Professional (PMP), she is currently responsible for member engagement at the R-CISC and the implementation of project management tools and techniques for the delivery of R-CISC programs.

Lea Lubag joined R-CISC from the Global Resilience Federation (GRF) as membership manager and is responsible for managing membership growth campaigns and strategizing new markets for expansion. Lubag had previously been connected to the R-CISC at its inception, leading the effort to standup member onboarding and member technology processes for the organization in 2015 while contracted with the Financial Services Information Sharing & Analysis Center Sector Services division (FS-ISAC SS). r-cisc.org

Illinois Biometric Law: Scanning Fingerprints Can Get You Sued
The Illinois Supreme Court ruled unanimously that when companies collect biometric data like fingerprints or face prints without informed opt-in consent, they can be sued. Users don't need to prove an injury like identity fraud or physical harm - just losing control of one’s biometric privacy is injury enough.

In Rosenbach v. Six Flags, a 14 year old brought a challenge against an amusement park for collecting his thumbprint without his informed consent, in violation of Illinois law. The law in question, the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA), prohibits companies from gathering, using, or sharing biometric information without informed opt-in consent. EFF, along with ACLU, CDT, the Chicago Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation, PIRG, and Lucy Parsons Labs, filed an amicus curiae brief urging the Illinois Supreme Court to adopt a robust interpretation of BIPA. eff.org

Walmart Sued After Ill. High Court Ruling On Biometric Privacy
Scanning Employee Fingerprints Without Consent
A proposed class of Walmart Inc. employees sued the retail giant on Monday in Illinois state court, alleging that the company illegally collected their fingerprints without consent, days after the state’s Supreme Court ruled plaintiffs don't need to allege actual harm to mount such suits.

Named plaintiff Ethan Roach, who worked at a Litchfield, Illinois, Walmart store from early 2016 until fall 2017, said the company made him and other employees use a handprint scanner when taking out and returning cash register drawers at the beginning and end of each shift. law360.com

Arizona: Proposed bill would restrict business biometric data use without consent
Exception would be given to security, law enforcement
Another U.S. state is considering major new regulatory rules that would make it illegal for businesses to use biometric data for commercial purposes without consent, the Arizona Mirror reports. House Bill 2478 is proposed by House Speaker Rusty Bowers, and sets criteria for legally enrolling an individual’s biometric data, with violations punishable by fines of up to $10,000 per violation, and eligible for lawsuits. The bill also empowers the Arizona Attorney General’s Office to investigate violations and impose penalties if necessary.

The criteria include giving notice of and receiving consent for biometric data collection, with exceptions for health care, law enforcement, and security. Security is defined in the bill to take in theft and fraud prevention, and protection of digital services and accounts. Biometrics could still be used to authenticate financial transactions, as long as it is not sold or used for other purposes. It does not limit federal or court orders for biometric data, according to the Mirror. biometricupdate.com

Every Business Needs Multi-Factor Authentication

You wouldn't leave the door to your house unlocked when you are not home, and you probably lock the door while you are home too. Even though there is no immediate danger of a stranger entering your home, or your strange uncle visiting unexpectedly, you lock the door. The locks on our doors are a precaution, not against an imminent threat, but against a possible threat. So too is Multifactor authentication an added layer of protection that you hope you never need but will be glad you had when a hacker, or your creepy uncle, tries to access your online accounts.

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), also known as Multifactor Authentication (MFA), is like a door with two locks. The first lock is your basic username and password login combination and the second can be anything else to verify your identity. The second layer is often a randomized number sent to your mobile device or email address but it can also be a hardware token that you carry on your person, an app on your phone, or even an NFC chip implanted under the skin.

Multifactor authentication is a simple way to add security to the accounts that your employees access every day. It can help prevent common vulnerabilities like reused passwords, brute force hacks, shared credentials, and orphaned credentials on public devices. As we live more of our personal and business life online, we have more and more passwords to remember each day. Best practices say that we should use a unique strong password for every account but the average business employee has to remember 191 different account passwords according to a 2017 report from Last Pass. Out of desperation, we start creating passwords that are easy to remember, just barely meeting the security guidelines for each site, and as the number of passwords pile up we resort to using the same password for multiple accounts. Workplace violence on the rise across Canada
Women four times more likely to experience sexual assault at work
Violence-related injuries at work are on the rise across Canada and this is especially the case for women, according to two recent studies. We found that women are four times more likely than men to experience sexual assault or unwanted touching on the job, no matter what occupation or industry they work in.

Women are also 13 per cent more likely than men to be physically assaulted at work — a difference largely explained by the sectors women tend to work in. Finally, we also found that differences between men and women in the risk of violence at work have changed over time.

Physical violence related to industry

In terms of physical assault, the risk was 13 per cent higher for women than for men; 7.7 women per 1,000 women and 6.8 men per 1,000 men reported being physically assaulted in the previous year.

This difference in risks of physical violence at work faced by men and women can be mostly explained by differences in the types of work they do. That is, if men and women are doing the same shifts in the same job in most industries (not all), neither are more at risk than the other. The female security guard working nights in a building complex faces the same risk of physical assault as her male colleague doing that job the next night.

However, differences in the types of work men and women do are deeply entrenched in the Canadian labour market; many occupations and industries in Canada are still as segregated on the basis of sex and gender today as they were 20 years ago.

Huge investments pay off for shopping centre owners
Shopping centre owners spending big bucks to become major destinations for shoppers are continuing to see those investments pay off, according to the Canadian Shopping Centre Study 2018.

Although malls across Canada are seeing growth, report author Craig Patterson said Greater Toronto Area shopping centres are leading the way in innovation and aesthetics: “We have the best-looking malls by far,” said Patterson, a retail analyst, and founder and editor-in-chief of Retail Insider. He created the report for the Retail Council of Canada.

Major Investments Across Canada
While top-end Toronto-area facilities might be leading the way, the investments are happening from coast to coast. Hundreds of millions of dollars — per shopping centre — continue to be spent on upgrades to attract potential shoppers: “People are still searching (for) experiences,” he said.

Top 10 Shopping Centres
Yorkdale topped the list for the third consecutive year with $1,905 sales per square foot, a 15 per cent increase year-over-year which solidifies its position as one of the top malls in North America. CF Pacific Centre moved up to second (from third) netting a healthy 10 per cent increase to $1,690 in sales per square foot, while the Oakridge Centre slipped to third at $1,594. Seven times in the past 10 days, armed robbers in the Windy City have targeted unsuspecting people wearing the parkas that have become a must-have item for celebrities and fashionistas. Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said investigators have determined that at least three of the robberies are connected, although all of them could be linked.

The brand's blizzard of popularity has not been lost on criminals. And the jackets joined Nike sneakers and Tide detergent as consumer goods that have become a metaphor for the power of supply and demand, with a felonious twist.

The Bank of Montreal is creating a financial crimes unit bringing together existing capabilities around cybersecurity, fraud and physical security. BMO chief executive Darryl White says the financial industry is faced with more sophisticated criminal activities and it's critical to invest in data protection. 4 Ways You Can Fight Friendly Fraud Chargebacks
Even if you’ve been good all year, the holiday shopping rush always ends up dropping the worst kind of coal under fraud analysts’ trees: chargebacks. 2. Proof that there have been one or more undisputed payments for the good or service
3. Proof that the goods or services were delivered

Though the “compelling evidence” language is unique to Visa, the dispute process is not. For example, the process for disputing Mastercard chargebacks doesn’t really differ from the Visa process. Fortunately, your fraud-fighting tool can grant you easy access to much of this compelling evidence.
