The U.S. Crime Surge
The Retail Impact
U.S. Homicides Dropped 16% in 2024
Most violent crime rates have fallen back to pre-pandemic levels, new
report shows
Crime is expected be a major focus for state lawmakers and the
Trump administration.
The
number of homicides across the United States declined by 16% in 2024,
continuing a recent downward trajectory, according to the latest crime
trends
report from the Council on Criminal Justice, a nonpartisan think
tank.
Homicides
spiked during the early years of the COVID-19 pandemic, and
crime became a central focus of President Donald Trump’s 2024 reelection
campaign. Trump
insisted that FBI crime data showing declines was “fake” and claimed
that crime was “through the roof.” The second Trump administration is
expected to adopt a tough-on-crime approach.
State legislatures nationwide also are expected to prioritize a
variety of criminal justice measures this year, including prison
oversight, illegal immigration, retail theft and policing standards and
procedures. Polls show most Americans see crime as a significant
problem, though fewer than in recent years.
The Council on Criminal Justice, known as CCJ,
gathers data from individual law enforcement agencies for its
biannual crime trends reports, meaning the data is more recent than the
FBI’s annual report. Both the think tank’s and the FBI’s reports,
however, show a similar turnaround in violent crime.
In 2023, criminal homicide — which the FBI defines as murder or
non-negligent manslaughter — was down by 11.6% from the previous
year. It was the largest single-year decline in two decades, according
to the FBI’s annual crime
report published last year.
The CCJ report shows that the downward trend appears to be continuing,
with homicides in 2024 dropping by 16% compared with 2023. That drop
equates to 631 fewer homicides in the 29 cities that provided data for
the category, according to the council’s report.
If this decrease holds as more jurisdictions report their data to the
FBI later this year, 2024 would rank among the
largest single-year homicide drops since at least 1960, the
start of modern record-keeping, according to the report.

Store Panic Buttons
Select Starbucks Stores Have a Panic Button: Why Do They Need It?
Select Starbucks stores have a panic button hidden underneath their
counters that baristas can access if necessary. Is there a reason
they need it?
Per Fortune Magazine, the button is installed in select stores. Fortune
cited a Starbucks employee who revealed the presence of the
panic button, which should be utilized as a
safety measure only. It is reportedly only supposed to be
used when there is an incident that would require further assistance
than normal or when customers or workers feel unsafe. However, that
same employee said they didn’t have explicit training on when to push
it.
This button activates an emergency lock-down.
It secures the doors to outside customers while allowing those inside
the store to exit. When a barista hits that button, an internal
security team is also alerted.
The button has only been installed in around five U.S. stores to test
its effectiveness. It was installed to assist with in-store security
and help its baristas feel safer while working, particularly since
Starbucks reversed its open-door policy for customers. The previous
open-door policy was put in place in 2018 after two Black men were
arrested at a Philadelphia Starbucks where they had gone for a business
meeting.
According to Business Insider, testing these panic buttons is just
one way Starbucks is prepping for the policy reversal. It is also
training its employees to de-escalate conflict with customers who are
breaking its new guidelines, such as those sitting in-store for a
“prolonged” amount of time without buying anything or asking to fill up
a water bottle without making a purchase.

Crime Closures Continue in California
Cities
Theft concerns, retail’s downward national trend make Rip Curl latest
downtown Santa Cruz closure
A second national surf apparel retailer closed its downtown Santa Cruz
location last week amid apparent ongoing
concerns about employees’ health and safety, but others say
the closure speaks more to the changing retail landscape nationally.
A sign posted last week on the window of the Rip Curl Surf Center at
1395 Pacific Ave., at the corner of Church Street, said the store was
closed as of Monday, Jan. 20, but that its other two locations in the
county remained open.
A manager at the retailer’s 41st Avenue store said all employees of
the downtown store had been offered the opportunity to transfer
there or to the outlet store on Mission Street in Santa Cruz. Most took
that option, Katie Armstrong told Lookout on Wednesday.
Armstrong said theft on Pacific Avenue was a factor for the store’s
closure, adding, “It was putting the health and
safety of my employees at risk.”
The conversation around downtown safety – and its impact on downtown
retail – continues to resonate. City leaders caution that reality
might not always match perception, but it’s a nuanced situation.

Store Owners Urge Police to Act
UK: Police need to do more to stop theft - shopkeepers
Retailers in a town have called for police to do more to prevent
shoplifting. The owners of the two small businesses in Towcester,
Northamptonshire, said thefts often went
unpunished and police response times were too slow.
Sawsan Gamgoum, owner of jewellery shop Flair Designer Wear, said: "Five
weeks after we opened, we had a break-in and they took everything. It
was heart-breaking. Nothing came of it." Northamptonshire Police said it
had seen an increase in reporting and detection rates for shop theft.
Last year, a House of Lords inquiry found there were more than
443,000 incidents of shop theft recorded by police in England and Wales
in the year to March 2024 – the highest ever since records began 20
years ago.
Although, the inquiry estimated there were more
likely about 17 million incidents annually because so many went
unreported by victims.
A spokesperson for Northamptonshire Police said the force had seen an
increase in both "our reporting and detection rates" for shop theft
since the formal launch of its dedicated retail crime team last year.
They said that historically, shop theft reporting across Towcester was
low, but encouraged anyone who had "suffered any form of retail crime
to make a report to us".

Canada's Retail Theft
Battle
Businesses continue to battle organized retail theft
The Globe and Mail reports that organized retail theft is becoming
more brazen—and more violent. At a Toronto Shoppers Drug Mart
location, an employee was pushed to the ground while following a group
of seven people charging the exit with more than $8,000 worth of product
in tow.
“Retailers across the country are experiencing a rise in violent
incidents, threats, and increasingly aggressive behaviour,” Darrell
Jones, president of Pattison Food Group, told the newspaper.

Major Workplace Safety Changes Coming?
Workplace Safety Under New Administration
Fisher Phillips predicts President Trump will undo Biden-Era
safety rules.
With the change in administration, as well as some changes toward the
end of the Biden administration, safety professionals are wondering what
this year will look like.
Employers Will Face Greater Scrutiny Thanks to
Public Data Release
The Biden-era OSHA got in one last jolt by publishing comprehensive
details on nearly 900,000 reported workplace injuries and illnesses
recorded by the agency in 2023 – which means employers will face
increased scrutiny in 2025. While we don’t expect Trump’s OSHA to do the
same in the coming year, the horse is already out of the barn for many
employers. You should brace for more detailed benchmarking against
peers, potential media scrutiny, union interest, and increased
expectations from employees and regulators.
Trump’s OSHA Will Undo Biden-Era Safety Rules
Safety professionals can expect several key changes from the Trump
administration. Even though Trump surprised the business community by
nominating union advocate Lori Chavez-DeRemer to lead the Department of
Labor, we still expect the new administration to put electronic
submission requirements back on the shelf. We also predict we’ll say
goodbye to the new union walkaround rule – either by agency or court
action.
DOGE Leaders Will Suggest Significant OSHA Cuts
Trump’s new DOGE initiative (which, despite its name, will not be an
official government agency) will take off early this year, led by Elon
Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy. To even come close to the goal of reducing the
federal budget by “at least $2 trillion,” you can bet on recommendations
for big slashes to federal agencies – including significant reductions
to OSHA’s overall headcount and to the number of compliance, safety, and
health officers.
OSHA State Plans Will Continue to Ramp Up

Using AI for Retail Hiring
Survey: AI widespread among hiring teams, more investments planned
The next frontier for artificial intelligence use in retail
appears to be talent acquisition.
That’s according to the fourth-annual Hiring Insights Report from
AI-focused hiring firm GoodTime, which revealed that 99% of talent
acquisition teams now use AI and automation to streamline hiring
processes, with 93% planning additional technology investments in 2025.
Just under half (47.9%) of talent acquisition teams met their hiring
goals in 2024 on average, marking the lowest success rate recorded
in the past four years. Sixty percent of organizations also reported
longer time-to-hire last year.
Healthcare was the only sector to report year-over-year improvements in
hiring goal attainment, reaching 56%. The retail and manufacturing
sectors faced some of the highest struggles, with hiring goal attainment
dipping to 36% — its lowest in three years.
Of the top-performing hiring teams (who hit 75% or more of their hiring
goals in 2024), 48% reported improving the candidate experience,
while 40% utilized AI to make hiring more efficient, and 35%
decreased the time-to-schedule process.
“The data makes it clear — talent teams can’t afford to stay stuck in
the hiring struggles of 2024,” said Ahryun Moon, CEO and Co-Founder
of GoodTime.

NYC ICE Raids Begin
ICE launches raids in NYC as part of Trump immigration crackdown
Federal ICE agents launched raids in New York City early Tuesday as
part of President Trump’s illegal immigration crackdown, Homeland
Security Secretary Kristi Noem said.
The agents hit at least three locations in the Bronx and took at
least two people into custody, including a Venezuelan gang member wanted
for an armed raid of an apartment complex in Aurora, Colorado that was
caught on camera, sources said.
“Arresting some criminal aliens this morning in NYC – thank you to the
brave officers involved,” Noem wrote on X at about 6 a.m. Tuesday with
pics of Immigration and Custom Enforcement agents preparing for the
operation.
The Homeland Security secretary thanked several federal agencies in her

Orders Kept Moving Amid Ransomware Attack
Procter & Gamble operations unhindered by Blue Yonder disruption
The consumer goods company built an in-house solution to keep orders
moving as its transportation management system provider navigated a ransomware
attack.
Procter & Gamble CFO Andre Schulten said a shutdown of its transportation
management service provider Blue Yonder in Q4 had a “relatively benign”
impact on its operations, according to a Dec. 3 session at the Morgan
Stanley Global Consumer and Retail Conference.
While Schulten didn’t specify the cause of the shutdown, Blue Yonder was the
target of a ransomware attack in late November, and major companies, including
Starbucks, experienced disruptions due to the outage. The Arizona-based
supply chain management software provider was already near full recovery by the
beginning of December.
When the disruption first occurred, Procter & Gamble’s backlog of orders
would have been worth up to 70 basis points of the quarter, Schulten said on
a Jan. 22 earnings call.
To address the building backlog, Procter & Gamble’s team set up a manual
in-house solution within 12 hours that provided the “same basic
functionality that Blue Yonder provides,” Schulten said at the Morgan Stanley
conference.
“The manual operation is very time-intensive and cost-intensive,” he told
analysts.
At the conference, Schulten said over the previous five to six days, Procter &
Gamble was able to process shipments and orders and get trucks out. He added
that the company was shipping roughly 100% of the orders it received.

'Growing Concerns for Cybersecurity
Preparedness'
Crisis Simulations: A Top 2025 Concern for CISOs
CISOs are planning to adjust their budgets this year to reflect their
growing concerns for cybersecurity preparedness in the event of a cyberattack.
In 2025, chief information security officers (CISOs) will be directing their
attention to becoming more cyber prepared in the event of an attack, by
enhancing their crisis simulation capabilities.
That's according to a study conducted by researchers at Hack The Box, which
found that out of 200 US- and UK-based CISOs, 74% said they plan to up their
crisis simulation budgets this year.
These changes likely stem from rising concerns about the growing number of
cyberattacks, the lack of incident-response planning, and inadequate
stress-testing of crisis scenarios. Such cyberattacks include incidents
affecting organizations like NHS, CrowdStrike, 23andMe, and more, affecting
businesses on a global level. CISOs are trying to reassess their organizations'
capabilities in order to manage the chaos when it inevitably arises.
A full 77% of those surveyed said they would allocate greater budgets for
cyber-crisis simulations if the exercises themselves were more realistic and
actionable.
"Preparedness is the foundation of resilience, and crisis simulations play a
crucial role in testing organizations security and workforce performance when
it's most critical," said Haris Pylarinos, CEO and founder at Hack The Box, in a
statement. "Organizations are right to prioritize crisis simulation, and must
ensure that these are implemented in the right way."

'An Unstable Environment for Enterprises'
Network security tool defects are endemic, eroding enterprise defense
When malicious hackers exploit vulnerabilities in firewalls, VPNs and
routers, it’s not the vendors that get hit — it’s their customers.
Thunters and defenders started 2025 in the opening scenes of a bad sequel. In
the early weeks of January, federal cyber authorities and researchers once again
warned that attackers were exploiting a zero-day vulnerability in Ivanti
Connect Secure.
The outbreak of new software defects in the same product from the same vendor
would be less nerve-wracking if it wasn’t so frequent, furthering an unstable
environment for enterprises. Exploited vulnerabilities in the network
devices and services organizations rely on for defense facilitate intrusions
they are designed to prevent.
Security gear and services running at the perimeter of enterprise networks —
from firewalls and VPNs to routers — are a common and persistent intrusion
point for cyberattacks.

New Amazon Hacking Campaign
Amazon Prime Security Warning As Hackers Strike—What You Need To Know
It has only been a matter of weeks since users of Amazon’s AWS cloud service
were warned about a ransomware attack labeled
impossible to recover from, and just days since a fraud involving the
supposed purchase of an
iPhone 16 from Amazon came to light. Now, security researchers have warned
users of Amazon Prime that a new hacking campaign is targeting them to steal not
only sensitive account data but credit card details as well. Here’s what you
need to know.
Threat intelligence analysts from Palo Alto’s Unit 42 research division have
confirmed a new hacking campaign that is targeting Amazon users by way of an
Amazon Prime membership expiry lure. In a Jan. 27 posting on X,
Unit 42 warned that the threat campaign employs PDF documents that lead, in
turn, to phishing pages where the attackers, impersonating Amazon, get the user
to enter sensitive account data and credit card information. Coming hot on the
heels of another warning about the use of PDF documents in
hack attacks targeting smartphone users, the Unit 42 Amazon Prime warning is
no less scary. Each of the 31 PDF documents used by the Amazon Prime hackers
employ a complex redirection process involving a whole bunch of different URLs
before finally reaching the data-stealing site. It has been reported that
threat actors have registered more than
1,000 malicious domains, all designed to look like they are associated
with Amazon itself, since June 2024.
"The initial attack vector, where users are beguiled into opening an email
attachment containing a PDF file,” Javvad Malik, lead security awareness
advocate at KnowBe4, said, “is a stark reminder of the importance of remaining
vigilant of emails.”
"This campaign demonstrates the nefarious evolution of
phishing tactics, particularly in leveraging trusted brands like Amazon to
exploit users,” Dray Agha, senior manager of security operations at
Huntress, warned, adding that it underscores a critical need for a layered
defense strategy alongside user education and robust endpoint detection. "The
use of PDFs with redirection techniques to obfuscate defenses,” Agha continued,
“demonstrates how adversaries are adapting and bypassing security solutions.”

Record Credit Card Spending
Amex posts 2024 records for payments volume, fees
The credit card company’s revenue and net income surged last year as
spending by cardholders and card customer additions reached new highs.
American Express on Friday reported its highest ever annual figures for
cardholder spending, merchant fee revenue and new card acquisitions in its
latest earnings report.
The 2024 increase in demand for its credit card services resulted in a 9%
rise in Amex’s revenue and a 21% net income increase over 2023, company
executives told analysts in an earnings call Friday morning.
The higher spending on Amex cards and new card sign-ups are largely driven by
millennials and members of Gen Z, CEO Steve Squeri said during the earnings
call. “We’re adding highly credit worthy customers in these cohorts,” he said.
American Express reported revenue climbed to $65.95 billion in 2024, up from
$60.52 billion in 2023, and net income rose to $10.13 billion in 2024, compared
to $8.37 billion in 2023.

Education is a broad term usually defined by an individual as a singular focus
with an end result that oftentimes stagnates the brain and limits horizons.
Reaching milestones is incredibly important, but keeping your curiosity and
wonderment is the key to reaching beyond. No singular degree or certification
will bring you the success - it merely opens the door to more learning and the
realization that if you don't know something, you go find someone who does and
learn it from them.
