Europol is observing a spike in serious
violent acts by organized crime groups
Organised crime groups fuel a rise in violent crime in the EU
A
new report by Europol warns that organised crime groups are increasingly
employing violence in pursuit of their criminal objectives, and such
violence represents a threat to public security in the EU. Based on an analysis
of contributions made by Member States to Europol in recent years, there has
been a rise in the number of violent incidents associated with serious and
organised crime. Furthermore, the analysis points to an
increasing willingness from criminal groups to resort to
lethal violence.
In this report, Europol highlights the factors underpinning this trend and
the challenges it poses to law enforcement and develops a set of
recommendations.
Underlying factors of violence and risks to the public
The
involvement in criminal gangs of younger and inexperienced hitmen and the
accessibility of firearms and explosives, together with violent incidents
often perpetrated in crowded public places and broad daylight are
considerable threats to public security.
Large ports in the EU exploited by criminal groups as transit points and
the streets of the surrounding cities are particularly vulnerable to violence.
The rise in violence in illicit markets can be tied to growing
competition among criminal networks.

FBI investigators:
DC Suspect planted pipe bombs night before capitol riot
The would-be pipe bomber of the Democratic and Republican National Committees’
headquarters planted the devices at the Washington, DC, buildings the night
before the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, the FBI said Friday.
In a wanted flyer, the FBI said it obtained new information about the bomber,
writing the agency now believes the would-be terrorist planted the bombs between
7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 5.
The bombs were found the following day before they detonated, but law
enforcement authorities have said they believe the bombs were viable — and could
have exploded at the downtown buildings.
A reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the bomber has
increased to $100,000, the
FBI’s flyer states.

Philly police commissioner defends department’s response to protests
following critical report and says she won’t resign
A defiant Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw,
following a critical independent report, on Thursday forcefully defended how
she led her department during protests and civil unrest last year, saying she
has the support of Mayor Jim Kenney and other community leaders and will not
resign.
Outlaw has repeatedly acknowledged there were some failings in the police
response, particularly on May 30, the first day of mass protests in the city,
saying the force was “woefully understaffed.”
But she said that the department soon bolstered resources and that there was
“simply not a blueprint available” for the mass unrest cities across the nation
faced last spring after the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
Outlaw said she made decisions on tactics such as using tear gas out of concern
for community and officer safety.

3rd Party Review of Portland's Protest Response
Overwhelmed Portland police haven’t done comprehensive review of force used
during protests, outside monitors say
Even though the size and frequency of Portland protests have significantly
diminished, police still haven’t done a comprehensive review of their crowd
control response to the civil unrest.
Outside consultants found that officers sometimes couldn’t explain why they used
force or their supervisors didn’t adequately review officers’ force reports.
The documentation also showed police sometimes lacked skills to resolve
confrontations without force or with the least amount of force possible,
according to consultant Dennis Rosenbaum and his partner Tom Christoff of
Rosenbaum & Associates. At the same time, they believed the Police Bureau’s
reporting system became overwhelmed “when looking at the totality of the summer
protests.”
They urged police to find ways to adapt given that protests over election
results, racial injustice and other issues are likely to continue.
“The overall failure appears connected to a system that was not designed for
such prolonged and intensive events,” the consultants said in their
fourth-quarter report released this week evaluating police actions from October
through December.

5 Illinois residents sought for looting store during August unrest in
Kenosha, WI
Five people from Illinois are being sought on warrants for looting a jewelry and
pawn shop during August rioting in Kenosha. Warrants were issued this week for
five people alleged to have looted GNT Jewelry and Loan on Aug. 24.
The charges are the latest to come from criminal investigations into arson
fires, looting, burglary and criminal damage that occurred in the days following
the shooting of Jacob Blake by a Kenosha Police officer on Aug. 23. Kenosha
Police Lt. Joseph Nosalik said there are ongoing investigations into 32 arson
fires and 85 other cases associated with the unrest.

few dozen people gathered at the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday to protest
investing app Robinhood and badger Wall Street traders amid the ongoing GameStop
stock chaos. Several of the protesters were spotted tailing people leaving the
building, yelling “Shame!” and “Eat the rich.”
The group held up signs spelling out “Tax Wall Street Trades” and chanted “We
want a free market.”
The stock trading app restricted buying of GameStop shares and those of other

More infectious Covid-19 variants have emerged around the world, and experts are
saying the United States must adapt to a changed pandemic playing field.
According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, these

against the South African variant.

A 3rd Covid Vaccine for the U.S. Emerges
Johnson & Johnson’s Vaccine Offers Strong Protection
but Fuels Concern About Variants
Johnson & Johnson announced on Friday that its one-dose coronavirus vaccine
provided strong protection against Covid-19, potentially offering the United
States a third powerful tool in a desperate race against a worldwide rise in
virus mutations.
But the results came with a significant cautionary note: The vaccine’s
efficacy rate dropped from 72 percent in the United States to 57 percent in
South Africa, where a highly contagious variant is driving most cases.
Studies suggest that this variant also blunts the
effectiveness of Covid vaccines made by Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Novavax.
The variant has spread to at least 31 countries, including the United States,
where two cases were documented this week.
Johnson & Johnson said that it planned to apply for emergency authorization of
the vaccine from the Food and Drug Administration as soon as next week, putting
it on track to receive clearance later in February.

Creating Online 'Command Centers'
Workday's solution allows HR leaders to evaluate vaccine availability and
worker vaccination status along with enabling employees to confidentially
self-report vaccination information, said Barbry McGann, senior vice president
of product management. Companies using Workday's analytics software can pull in
immunization data from third-party systems, like the U.S. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention or the World Health Organization, that can be combined

Salesforce, a customer relationship management platform, also has a
vaccine management solution designed to help health care organizations and
governments more efficiently and safely manage vaccine programs at larger

Walmart Has Spent the Past Year Preparing with CDC and Others to Administer
COVID-19 Vaccine

Right now we have over 5,000 Walmart store and Sam’s Club locations that are

Clearly, the vaccine is not the silver bullet
Stores are open, but the pandemic keeps shoppers away
Despite effective vaccines and more government relief, consumers are playing it
safe as COVID-19 cases continue to rise and variants emerge.
Even once they're vaccinated, 40% of U.S. consumers say they'll shop for
apparel as much or less in stores, and another third or so are unsure about
or will refuse a vaccine, according to research from experience management
platform First Insight. Most (61%) said they'll cut back on spending if there's
another shutdown.
"Our latest research shows that even with a vaccine, people will still be
afraid to go in-store, and fully prepared to cut back on spending if the
nation returns to another lockdown."
In the third week of January, U.S. store traffic fell 33% and net sales in
stores fell 16% year over year, according to store analytics firm Retail Next.
The Western U.S. fared worst, with traffic down 38% year over year, followed by
the Northeast (down 30%), the South (down 29%) and the Midwest (down 24%),
RetailNext found.
Department stores are having a hard time, with Macy's seven-day rolling
average down 37%, Nordstrom down 36% and Kohl's down 17%, Morgan Stanley said,
citing data provided by Placer.ai. But even off-price stores, which by and large
can't turn to e-commerce to make up for slower store sales, are entertaining
fewer shoppers than last year. Nordstrom Rack, where traffic fell 32%, does have
robust e-commerce and BOPIS services, but Burlington (down 9%), T.J. Maxx (down
2%), Marshalls (down 8%) and Ross (down 16%), do not.

Retail Comeback Hinges on Herd Immunity
Will vaccine reluctant Americans slow the retail comeback from COVID-19?
Getting back to some semblance of pre-pandemic normalcy in the U.S. is entirely
dependent on the nation’s ability to get a handle on the coronavirus. Medical
professionals and public policy experts have been pointing to individual and
business safety measures as a means to tamp down the spread of the virus, but
achieving herd immunity is the only currently viable path to that happening.
In order for the nation to reach herd immunity without the death toll stretching
into the millions, the vast majority of the population will need to get
vaccinated. The reality on the ground is that a large percentage of Americans,
for a variety of reasons, are either reluctant, unwilling or, in a small
percentage of cases, unable to get a COVID-19 vaccine.
A
survey from First Insight finds that about a third of Americans are unsure
as to whether they will be vaccinated or not, but that
even with vaccines many people are not
planning to suddenly go flocking to stores.
Forty-five percent of beauty product shoppers said they would either go to
stores less or the same after being vaccinated. The same holds true for 44
percent looking to buy footwear, 43 percent of consumer electronics purchasers
and 40 percent shopping for apparel.
If the vaccine does not prove to be the medicine that retailers are counting on
to help them bring their businesses back, there is clearly more pain ahead for
the industry.
CNBC reports that Coresight Research is forecasting that up to 10,000 stores
will be closed this year.
“The rollout of vaccination programs
should result in a partial recovery in store-based sales,”
Coresight CEO Deborah Weinswig said.
“However, these programs may take many
months to reach a wide base of consumers.”

Mount Pleasant, SC: Chick-fil-A Manager Called in to a Save COVID Vaccine
Drive-Thru Struggling with Long Wait Times
No business can master a drive-thru like Chick-fil-A, and a restaurant manager
is getting high praise for using the company’s method to help workers at a
COVID-19 vaccination site after a computer glitch caused a traffic gridlock.
Mayor Will Haynie said he was notified on Jan. 22 that traffic was backed up for
an hour at the COVID-19 vaccination site at Seacoast Church. He called Chick-fil-A
Manager Jerry Walkowiak for help, knowing the company had a great reputation for
mastering the art of drive-thru.
Haynie said Walkowiak, while standing out in the cold rain,
used the Chick-fil-A method to speed up the drive-thru,
including walking up to drivers in advance to make sure they had their paperwork
and immediately directing them to a spot to receive their vaccine. Haynie said
Walkowiak was able to reduce the wait from an hour to 15 minutes.

Coming out of a banner year, Marvin Ellison
discusses how initiatives put in place years ago contributed to the retailer's
success.

is entering 2021 coming out of a banner year. At a time when much of the
industry has faced sales declines among other struggles, the home improvement
sector has become an unlikely winner.
Initiatives put in place prior to the pandemic helped support the retailer's
digital business as more consumers shifted spending online. Even before current
CEO Marvin Ellison
took the helm back in 2018, the retailer has been making
investments in tech, including the development of mobile apps using AR. But his
arrival also came as Lowe's was producing lackluster sales in comparison to its
larger rival, The Home Depot. The North Carolina-based retailer also faced a
number of technological missteps, including data breaches, notably during the
all-important Black Friday holiday in 2017 and 2018.
"Two years ago, we couldn't even offer a customer an e-receipt," Ellison said
during NRF's virtual Big Show conference. "As recent as last year, our
e-commerce platform was on a decade-old infrastructure. Think about your
computer today versus your computer 10 years ago, and that's the equivalent of
what a multibillion dollar e-commerce platform was sitting on."
Ellison over the past several years has worked to right a number of missteps in
the company's online business. The company in 2019 said it was investing half a
billion dollars annually until 2021 to transform the technical makeup of its
business, which included opening a tech center in Charlotte, North Carolina, and
hiring up to 2,000 tech associates.
"When I think about operational excellence in retail, I think about the analogy
of building a home where it starts with a really stable and solid foundation,"
Ellison said. "If you don't have a robust labor management system, if you don't
have a strong, stable IT infrastructure, if you don't have an e-commerce
platform that gives you agility, if you don't have products that speak to the
customers from a value quality perspective, it's really difficult to be
effective in retail, whether it's 2021 or 1921."

Micro-Fulfillment - Micro Risks?
Walmart to build local fulfillment centers (LFC's) at dozens of stores
Following a two-year pilot, Walmart plans to add micro-fulfillment centers to
more of its stores through partnerships with three automation technology
providers.
Using robotics technology and artificial intelligence (AI), the compact,
modular warehouses — inside or attached to a store — are designed to fill
online orders for pickup and delivery more quickly, enabling Walmart stores to
handle increased digital order volume and provide more convenience to customers.
Automated bots retrieve ordered items from the fulfillment center,
instead of an associate having to walk the store to pick products from shelves.
The items then are brought to a picking workstation, where the order can be
assembled faster and while the system retrieves the order for assembly, a
personal shopper handpicks fresh items like produce, meat and seafood, and
large general merchandise from the sales floor,”
One LFC can fill orders for many stores, allowing other Walmart locations
to realize benefits from the automated facility.
Such capability will be critical for Walmart as its e-commerce sales continue to
surge.
Automated pickup points also will be added to some Walmart stores,
enabling customers and delivery personnel to drive up, scan a code and retrieve
their orders, Ward said. Walmart already offers a
number of turnkey pickup options, including 24-hour, drive-up
automated pickup kiosks — first launched in mid-2017 near Oklahoma City —
and Pickup Towers inside more than 1,600 stores, as well as in-store pickup
lockers and
freestanding pickup-only facilities.

America’s top-tier malls were resilient, but values are now crumbling,

Real estate analytics firm Green Street estimates the values of so-called
A-rated malls have tumbled about 45% from 2016 levels. A-rated malls are an
important bellwether to monitor in the retail real estate industry because they
account for the majority of mall value in the U.S. There are about 250,
representing a quarter of America’s roughly 1,000 shopping malls.
The biggest U.S. mall owner, Simon Property Group, holds a substantial portion
of the A-rated malls and outlet centers in the U.S. And its shares are down more
than 32% over the past 12 months.

The attempts to curb allegedly anticompetitive behavior by large technology
companies got serious in 2020, when federal and state agencies filed five
separate antitrust lawsuits against Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Facebook Inc. The

LP Leader Steve McClain Passes Away Due to COVID-19 Complications
I'm saddened to report that Steve McClain, one of our long time Loss Prevention
Industry leaders has passed away. Most recently Steve was the Principal
Consultant at AP&S. Prior to opening his consulting firm Steve served as the
Vice President of Asset Protection for Big Lots. Steve also held the position of
Senior Vice President of Asset Protection for the Hollywood Entertainment. Steve
started his Asset Protection career in 1984 working for Target Stores. He
received a number of promotions including serving as the companies Director of
Asset Protection. Steve graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from Truman
State University. Steve will be missed by all those who knew or worked with him
during his career of 41 years. Rest in Peace Steve.

PCI SSC Executive Director Discusses New Board and 2021 Priorities
With the start of a new year, PCI SSC Executive Director Lance Johnson
welcomes the new 2021-2022 Board of Advisors, provides an update on the
Council’s top priorities, and offers insight into what stakeholders can expect
in 2021.
PCI
SSC recently announced its 2021-2022 Board of Advisors. What’s new about the
Board this term?
Lance Johnson: As with past Boards, the new Board includes some of the
world’s leading companies from all sectors in the payments space. This year,
we’ve expanded stakeholder involvement in global retail, mobile, software
security, and new technology industry sectors.
The new Board of Advisors will be instrumental in helping the Council address
major changes in the coming years. Not only are we still addressing the changes
caused or accelerated by the pandemic, such as remote working and mobile
payments, but we are also facing the introduction of a major upgrade in our Data
Security Standard (DSS), PCI DSS v4.0. The new Board represents a balanced cross
section of the payments industry and many of them are primary drivers of these
changes.
As we start 2021, what can we expect in the year ahead?
Lance Johnson: Like 2020, this will be another year of change and
adaptation, although I expect we will be building on what we’ve learned and
evolving our practices. This is especially true as we move from temporary
solutions to more permanent procedures in our guidance. Operating remotely is
going to continue to be a key focus. This is not new, but it has fresh momentum.
Whether it’s working remotely, managing remotely, assessing remotely, or
training remotely, this year will see new work methods, practices, and
procedures throughout the industry.
What will the priorities of the Council be for 2021? - What message would you
like to share with PCI’s Participating Organizations?

Microsoft Security Business Exceeds $10B in Revenue
In recent years, Microsoft has tightened its focus on strengthening the security
of its products and services, as well as rolling out its own security tools.
More than 9,000 customers use Azure Sentinel, its cloud-based SIEM made
available in September 2019, and 90 of the Fortune 100 use at least four of
Microsoft's security, compliance, identity, and management tools, the company
reported.
The company also shared some data on the effectiveness of its security tools in
2020. Over the past year, 2.5 billion daily cloud-based detections blocked
nearly 6 million endpoint threats. Microsoft Defender blocked more than 30
billion emailed threats, and more than 30 billion authentications were processed
daily across 425 million people using Azure Active Directory.

The Second Annual Study on the Economics of Security Operations Centers: What
is the True Cost for Effective Results? report from Ponemon Institute and
sponsored by FireEye Inc. finds that
organizations are
spending more to account for widespread security operation center (SOC)
challenges including
growing security management complexity, increasing analyst salaries, security
engineering and management outsourcing costs,
yet are still
dissatisfied with the outcomes.
However, companies are also
boosting investments in
new SOC tools and security automation
to help solve these issues.
The Ponemon Institute surveyed 682 SOC managers, security analysts, general
security practitioners, IT managers and directors who have a Security Operations
Center in their organizations.
“The findings of the Ponemon Economics of the SOC report show that organizations
are facing an onslaught of rising security operations costs, but despite these
increased investments, are still unhappy with their ability to combat growing
cyberthreats,” said Chris Triolo, Vice President of Customer Success, FireEye.
“Many security teams are now seeking new technologies that can provide greater
efficiencies and visibility, while cutting alert overloads and eliminating
mundane tasks to improve analyst morale.”

Hy-Vee agrees to settle the class action lawsuit over its months-long data
breach
Hy-Vee has reached a preliminary settlement agreement in a class action brought
by customers whose credit and debit card information was exposed as a result of
a huge data breach at some of the company’s stores, according to a published
report. Papers filed in an Illinois federal court this month noted that the
grocer began negotiating the proposed settlement with the plaintiffs’ attorneys
after a judge declined to dismiss the lawsuit last April.
In Aug. 2019, Hy-Vee revealed the existence of a data breach affecting
customers who used debit and credit cards at its fuel pumps, drive-thru coffee
shops and restaurants.
Locations across the grocer’s eight-state Midwestern market area were affected
by the breach, which
lasted between seven to eight months, starting in Dec. 2018
at some locations. Information from more than
5.3 million debit and credit cards was compromised
over that time.

Online fraud at an all-time high amidst the global pandemic
Client-side attacks have become significantly more prominent in recent years,
gaining popularity since 2015. As online activity rises due to the global
pandemic, 2020 has been no exception, with the most susceptible target,
e-commerce, becoming more lucrative than ever.
The Client-Side Problem Explained
When interacting with a web application, numerous actions take place in the
background. These can generally be divided into two categories, differentiated
by where they take place. First is the client-side (i.e actions taking place on
the end-user’s device) and the second is the server-side (i.e actions taking
place on the web server). In recent years, attackers have found it easier to
carry out attacks on the client-side, as these are more difficult for
organizations to detect and handle (more on that later).
Where There is Personal Information – There is Gain
E-commerce websites, together with airlines and ticketing platforms, have been a
top-priority target for these attacks in recent years. These sites usually rely
on various third-party services in order to enrich the customer experience.
According to The State of Security Within e-Commerce report, online retailers
use an average of 31 JavaScript resources per site. Services like Live-Chat for
customer service, an e-commerce platform, a payment gateway, to name a few.
Furthermore, e-commerce sites are heavily form-reliant, usually requiring
a login, as well as a checkout form. This makes them the perfect victim for
formjacking attacks.
The Effects of the Pandemic on Online Shopping
According to
Imperva Research Labs, just shortly after the orders to stay at home were
given, there was a
28% increase in online retail traffic. Data from the United Nations
Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) reveals a similar picture. As they
stated, the pandemic has accelerated the shift towards a more digital world and
triggered changes in online shopping behaviors that are likely to have
lasting effects. The biggest gainers are electronics,
gardening/do-it-yourself, pharmaceuticals, education, furniture/household
products and cosmetics/personal care categories1. This trend is predicted to
grow in 2021. And with many businesses forced to change the way they conduct
their sales, the risk of fraud is growing exponentially.

Amazon seeks to block shareholder proposals on hate speech, diversity, workplace
conditions and surveillance tech
Amazon has asked federal regulators to block a number of shareholder proposals
that strike at the heart of many recent criticisms of the Seattle-based commerce
behemoth, including its stances on curbing hate speech and offensive content,
diversity in hiring, workplace conditions for hourly warehouse employees and
its surveillance technologies.
If granted, Amazon’s requests would mean shareholders would not have an
opportunity to vote on those proposals at the company’s shareholder meeting this
year, where they would likely be rejected regardless. Last year, none of a dozen
shareholder proposals was approved.

Greenwich, CT: Police Department’s ORCA Team Arrests 2 Shoplifting Suspects on
the Avenue
Members from the Greenwich Police Department’s Organized Retail Criminal
Activity Team (ORCA) chased three suspects on foot down Greenwich Avenue on
Wednesday afternoon after they were observed stealing high value handbags from a
local merchant, according to a statement from the GPD. Two of the suspects
were apprehended after a brief foot pursuit and struggle. The third suspect got
away with over $20,000 worth of merchandise. The two suspects — one from New
Rochelle, N.Y., and the other from the Bronx, N.Y. — were each charged with
larceny in the first degree, conspiracy to commit larceny in the first degree,
organized retail theft, and conspiracy to commit organized retail theft. The
suspect from the Bronx, a 43-year-old male, fought with police and was
additionally charged with assault on an officer, and interfering. He was also
charged with possession of a shoplifting device after police found wire cutters
used to disengage security straps; possession of a controlled substance; and
possession of narcotics after pills and marijuana were found on his person.

El Cajon, CA: Burglars smash into store, steal
$50,000 in jewelry
Burglars
bashed their way into a Southern California jewelry store taking thousands of
dollars in merchandise in the process. Police are now trying to catch the
smash-and-grab thieves. Nearly $50,000 in jewelry was taken from the store in El
Cajon. A lot of display cases were damaged as well. The suspects were in-and out
in less than a minute. A trail of merchandise was left in the parking lot due to
the quick getaway.

Blytheville, AR: Three arrested in connection to Lowes theft
Johnathan Conder, Drexel Davis, Brandon Betts were arrested Jan. 23 after
officers served a search warrant on Debra Lane. According to a media release
from Blytheville police, the search warrant was due to a traffic stop that
uncovered stolen items from Lowe’s. “During the search, officers located
thousands of dollars worth of merchandise that had been stolen from Lowe’s
in Blytheville on several dates leading up to Jan. 22, 2021. Officer also
located items and evidence from a trailer that had been stolen from Lake City on
Dec. 8, 2020,” Blytheville police said. Blytheville police later found the
trailer in another area of the city.

Hudson Falls, NY: Pharmacy robbed at gunpoint; Suspect commits suicide after
vehicle chase
Hudson Falls man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after leading police
on a chase across three towns from the scene of a robbery at McCann’s Pharmacy
on Thursday afternoon. The incident began at 3:49 p.m. with a report of an armed
robbery at the pharmacy on Main St. in Hudson Falls. A man was seen entering the
pharmacy wielding what appeared to be a rifle or shotgun. He then proceeded to
rob store employees at gunpoint, demanding prescription medication. During the
chase, State Police said the vehicle came to an abrupt stop in Queensbury.
Police attempted to speak with the suspect as they approached the vehicle.
Despite the efforts of law enforcement, the suspect shot himself, according to a
news release.

PA: Two men fatally shot in North Philly store
Two men were fatally shot in a North Philadelphia store Thursday in what police
are calling a double homicide. Shortly before 1 p.m., police were called to the
Al-Madinah Traders store in the 3600 block of Germantown Avenue, which sells
jewelry, perfume, books, and other items. Police said passersby had found the
men dead inside the store. As of Thursday evening, police had made no arrests
and had not recovered weapons, they said.

Bellingham, WA: Sporting goods store employee shoots man during attempted
robbery, police say
A 37-year-old man suspected in an attempted robbery at a Bellingham sporting
goods store is in the hospital after being shot by a store employee Thursday,
according to Bellingham police. Police said they were initially called about
11:04 a.m. to the Haggen Foods store for a robbery. Two men reportedly entered
the store, stole multiple bottles of liquor and then took off in a car. About 14
minutes later, police said they were called to a robbery at Yeager’s Sporting
Goods, where shots were fired. When officers arrived they found a man on the
floor with a gunshot wound to his chest, being held down by store employees. He
was taken to the hospital. The man reportedly tried to rob the store.

Nashville, TN: Pizza shop robbery suspect shot by police in stable condition
Lamon Witherspoon, 30, man wanted on felony charges in connection with a pizza
shop robbery over the weekend remained hospitalized Thursday a day after he was
shot by a Metro Nashville police officer. Witherspoon has been at Vanderbilt
University Medical Center since Wednesday after Officer Wesley McClelland shot
him in the head and hip in the parking lot of the Exxon gas station.

Texarkana, AR: Man accused of shooting at C- store clerk faces possible life
sentence
A
man accused of shooting in the direction of a clerk during an attempted robbery
of a Texarkana, Arkansas, convenience store earlier this month is facing a
possible life sentence. Jonathan Dewayne Carroll, 26, is charged with aggravated
robbery, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by certain persons in
Miller County in connection with the holdup of Speed-X convenience store on Jan.
12.
In addition to those charges prosecutors have filed enhancements for use
of a firearm and habitual offender. When the
clerk “just looked at the suspect,” he fired a shot from the weapon which
damaged the cigarette rack and lodged in a file cabinet located behind it.
Carroll was arrested by Texarkana Police officers shortly after the robbery.

Robberies to Organized Crime group
Several
Southeast Texas agencies are joining forces to take down organized crime. They
want to know if Moses Rhine and K'leb Diamond, two men arrested for aggravated
robbery, are part of a larger criminal organization. Beaumont Police officer
Haley Morrow said the recent armed robberies over the last month or two appear
to be the work of an organized group. The armed robberies span across three
counties, Chambers, Jefferson and Orange.

Perception becomes reality slowly on a macro level and it's difficult to change
it if it's incorrect or doesn't portray the truth. It's the same reason law
enforcement separates witnesses to ensure clarity and truth. The group mind
becomes influenced by opinion and agendas and distorts the true reality. One can
only rely on daily vigilance based on doing what's right to hopefully impact the
individuals one works with on a daily basis to carry the experience forward and
be witness to what is right.
