The U.S. Crime Surge
The Retail Impact

The Balance Between Safety & Privacy/Convenience
Hardening The Target: Balancing The Seesaw Of Security And Privacy

Dara Riordan is the President and COO of FaceFirst Inc., a global leader in facial recognition and AI-driven security software.

In an increasingly interconnected world, prioritizing safety means acknowledging that a certain degree of privacy must sometimes be exchanged for greater security. It’s about value exchange, the concept of trading something of value to receive something of equal or more significant benefit. For consumers, this can often be the exchange between a company and a customer, such as sharing personal information in exchange for a personalized shopping experience or discounts. It can also be increased security for a safer and more secure environment, such as metal detection or surveillance tools and personnel.

Value exchange underpins many interactions. People must evaluate what they’re giving up versus what they gain: time, money, privacy or information. Successful value exchanges require one fundamental ingredient—they must be built on transparency and mutual benefit, with each party seeing clear worth in what they’re receiving.

The accelerated violence and crime we've seen isn't just theft. It’s also active shooter events at grocery stores, movie theatres, malls and concert venues. This crime spike requires advanced security measures to protect public spaces better and prevent violence and loss. Change is happening to harden the new target, our stores and other public spaces. California Proposition 36 overwhelmingly passed in November 2024, with more than 68% of Californians in a deep blue state voting for stricter punishments on crime and drug offenses. Enhanced security protocols and solutions will be required to counter rampant crime, which means being able to identify individuals, investigate their criminal acts and build prosecutable cases.

Embracing technology with human oversight empowers the use of tools and systems that can—and do—identify threats, help prevent crimes and drive swifter responses to emergencies. The seesaw balance between privacy and security can be achieved with two key elements in mind.

1. Trust And Transparency: Clear, simple notices at entrances help ensure that members of the public are informed about security measures in place and where they can find more information about stores’ privacy policies.

2. Minimal And Necessary Data Collection: Any intrusion on the public’s privacy should be both minimal and purposeful, especially for threat mitigation as well as enhanced intelligence about criminal activity and patterns. The ability to prevent harm and loss, augment investigations and improve store safety more than balances the brief, limited, contactless intrusion by already ubiquitous security cameras and software as individuals enter. forbes.com

Will Prop 36 Live Up to Promise of Tackling Crime?
The Legislature must ensure Prop. 36 fulfills its promise of less crime and more treatment
California’s Proposition 36 is a compelling story about how Californians respond when feeling unsafe and ignored by their elected representatives. It is also a near-perfect example of how Californians have repeatedly responded to crime via initiative.

Proposition 36 was approved in every California county and had the highest percentage of support for all ballot measures. To prove that voters meant what they said, they also unelected several progressive district attorneys.

Prop. 36 has been falsely characterized as a return to the “lock’em up and throw away the key” approach to crime and a return to incarceration for drug offenses.

Prop. 36 also addresses the strong correlation between substance abuse, homelessness, and crime, with one condition often leading to another. It provides that certain people who possess illegal hard drugs are to be charged with a “treatment-mandated felony” instead of the current misdemeanor, which allows them to avoid jail time and have their case dismissed if they complete their rehabilitation plan.

The legislature has the choice and challenge to fund these treatment courts or ignore the precepts of Prop. 36 and the will of California voters. Taxpayers have spent tens of billions of dollars on incarceration and reducing our homeless population in the last decade. Investing in drug treatment, as the voters have directed, will go a long way toward making voters feel heard and respected.  ocregister.com

Cities on Edge Amid 'Deportation Blitz'
Trump ramps up ICE arrests, alarming cities and immigrant communities

The number of suspects arrested — several hundred per day — has been outpaced by the psychological impact of the attention on ICE operations.

The deportation blitz President Donald Trump promised on the campaign trail kicked off in U.S. cities this week, delighting many of his supporters and jolting communities where immigration officers appeared — or whose arrival was merely rumored, sending a chill nonetheless.

Trump’s executive orders have given immigration officers extraordinary new powers to cast a wider net and fast-track deportations. The president has scrapped restrictions that kept “sensitive” locations like churches and schools off-limits for immigration officers. Social media posts and school mailing lists have lit up with possible officer sightings, including many false alarms.

The number of suspects arrested — several hundred per day nationwide — has been outpaced by the psychological impact of the attention on ICE operations.

In Boston, a Fox News crew broadcast live as officers knocked on doors and pulled suspects from homes. In other cities where ICE netted a smattering of arrests, immigrant advocacy groups and Democratic representatives denounced “raids” that gave an impression of something larger. Chicago officials said ICE officers tried to access an elementary school, but the agency said it wasn’t true. washingtonpost.com

Macy's Reimagining Project is a Success
Macy’s Says Its ‘Bold New Chapter’ Plans Are Working, Expanding ‘First 50’ Blueprint to 125 Stores in 2025
Kicking off the chat at the NRF Big Shoe 2025 with an analysis of how the company’s retooling plans (under the moniker of “A Bold New Chapter”) were going, Tony Spring (CEO and chairman of Macy’s) suggested that he was very pleased with the direction things were currently headed.

A Bold New Chapter was our opportunity to reimagine the Macy’s portfolio, which does include Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, and Bluemercury. For the Macy’s brand, it’s strengthening the Macy’s nameplate. It was listening to 60,000 customers that we talked to who were both active and inactive,” he said.

“What were they looking for in a shopping experience with Macy’s? They wanted a better merchandise assortment that was both private brands and market brands. They wanted a better service experience that was additional colleagues in the store and a better visual presentation. They wanted a better modern take on marketing and a better balance in our media mix between digital and traditional marketing. They were looking for a quicker supply chain. They wanted product to be arriving faster when they ordered it. They wanted things to arrive accurately. Some of the fundamentals of retail,” he added.

Moderator Reagan then prompted Spring to talk about how Macy’s was addressing the demand to satisfy the aforementioned fundamentals of retail, and the CEO happily obliged, speaking of the success of the company’s First 50 blueprint. Under these guidelines, starting with 50 locations in the Macy’s stores portfolio, everything from merchandising to the customer experience was purposefully stepped up with a renewed intensity.

As a result, Spring noted, the First 50 project stores saw three consecutive quarters of strong growth. retailwire.com

First Unionized Whole Foods Location
Whole Foods Workers in Philadelphia Vote to Form Chain’s First Union

The union win comes as Amazon, which owns the grocery chain, is also fighting labor organizing in its warehouse and delivery businesses.

Workers at a Whole Foods Market in Philadelphia voted on Monday to become the first unionized store in Amazon’s grocery chain, opening a new front in the e-commerce giant’s efforts to fend off labor organizing in multiple segments of its business.

Employees at the sprawling Whole Foods store, in the city’s Spring Garden neighborhood, voted 130-100 in favor of organizing with the United Food and Commercial Workers union, the National Labor Relations Board said.

Store employees said they hoped a union could help negotiate higher wages, above the current starting rate of $16 an hour, and better benefits. Some longtime employees, who have been with Whole Foods since well before Amazon bought the chain in 2017, said reductions in workers’ benefits and cuts in staffing levels when Amazon took over, among other changes, had been sources of frustration.

But those leading the union campaign hinted at a broader goal: to inspire a wave of organizing across the chain, adding to union drives among warehouse workers and delivery drivers that Amazon is already combating. nytimes.com

Store Closures to Double in 2025
Are More Store Closings Than Openings in Retail’s Future?
Coresight Research predicts a spike in store closings in the U.S. this year, representing the second consecutive year that closures outpace openings. The net increased closures were attributed to shifts to online shopping.

In 2024, U.S. store closures totaled 7,325, reaching the highest number of closings since 2020, the first year of the pandemic, according to Coresight’s findings. Openings reached 5,970, which still represented the highest number of openings since 2012 when Coresight began tracking opening/closing data.

For 2025, closings are predicted to more than double year over year to approximately 15,000. Openings are expected to remain about the same at about 5,800 this year.

Coresight said it already tracked over 2,000 planned closures year to date, including announcements from Party City, Big Lots, Kohl’s, and Macy’s. As of Jan. 17, major U.S. retailers have announced 29.6% fewer openings and 334.3% more closures compared to a year ago. retailwire.com

Presidential Level Salaries At Walmart
Some Walmart managers make more than U.S. Presidents

The retail superstore is now leading the charge for high compensation.

Beginning on February 1, the retailer said it will lift its base pay for market managers from $130,000 to $160,000. "Walmart is increasing base pay, bonus opportunity and annual stock awards for our Market Managers," Walmart said in a statement.

When added together with bonuses and stock grants, some managers will stand to take up over $600,000 at the end of the day —roughly $200,000 more than the salary for a sitting U.S. president. Walmart says about 440 managers are already within this pay band. Such pay is "key for our business and for serving our customers however they shop." thestreet.com

In Case You Missed It

Matt Sack Takes Control of Prosegur's EAS Division, Spins It off as Independent Company Named Global Security Solutions

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. - Prosegur has decided to spin-off its EAS and RFID division in the U.S., which will be now be fully controlled and managed by Matt Sack, one of the top leaders in the loss prevention solutions industry. Sack, who has served as the division's CEO most recently, has renamed the newly-independent company Global Security Solutions.

"Since 2019, our organization has grown globally, introducing new solutions for global and local retail chains, and not just in the electronic article surveillance (EAS) arena but in radio-frequency identification (RFID) and robotics," said Sack. "Spinning off the division into an independent company, Global Security Solutions, will allow us to increase the focus on the development of new technologies beyond the traditional security applications, especially when it comes to RFID. At the same time, we remain as committed as ever to serving our clients in the retail world and helping them meet and exceed their asset protection objectives."

According to Sack, the organization has launched a series of new solutions that promise to transform how retailers think of loss prevention. Two of those solutions, ThinLine RFID antennas and Focus4 RFID readers, have entered the market to great success, delivering what retail chains have long searched for - an RFID system that can truly function as both an electronic article surveillance solution as well as an inventory tracking system with a high rate of accuracy. Coupled with the organization's new RFID labels and tags, this system will enable retailers to have an unparalleled new insight into their store operations, according to Sack.

Matt Sack is a retail industry veteran with over 36 years of experience. Prior to serving as Prosegur global retail group's CEO and executive chairman, he served as chief sales officer of Prosegur USA, prior to which he was CEO of Best Security industries (BSI). He held other senior leadership roles throughout his career, including being a vice president at Macy's. He resides in New York with his wife and three daughters.

Ransomware Plagues Ever Sector
How ransomware attacks like Columbus' happen
As Columbus continues to recover from last summer's ransomware attack, a new special project from Axios' Visuals team explains how such data breaches occur. Ransomware — in which hackers encrypt victims' computers and put sensitive information at risk until a ransom is paid — has plagued nearly every sector.

Hospitals, schools, publicly traded companies and even auto dealers have also faced service disruptions or had to shut down due to its impact.

Last year was likely the highest-grossing year for ransomware gangs in decades, with a company paying one gang a record-breaking $75 million. Though Columbus didn't pay a ransom to the group that claimed responsibility for the local breach, the city is now paying in other ways.

The attack, which involved a malicious download, compromised the sensitive data of over 500,000 people. Residents and others are eligible to sign up for two years of free Experian credit monitoring on the city's dime.

The city extended the credit monitoring enrollment deadline to March 31. Around 21,700 people had signed up as of last week, spokesperson Melanie Crabill tells Axios. axios.com

Security Challenges of AI
AI security posture management will be needed before agentic AI takes hold
As I’m currently knee deep in testing agentic AI in all its forms, as well as new iterations of current generative AI models such as OpenAI’s O1, the complexities of securing AI bot frameworks for enterprise security teams are beginning to crystallize.

The first comparison that comes to mind is what we experienced during the “on-prem to cloud” days, when we were suddenly faced with limitations in our existing security toolsets.

Your on-prem vulnerability scanner, which was used to scan a database or VM server at an IP address, suddenly didn’t know what an AWS S3 bucket or Azure Blob was. It could not understand the context of a Lambda function or even how to scan it, and you were left with “invisible” vulnerabilities because the scanner was effectively blind to these assets. This is how cloud-native application protection platforms (CNAPPs) – tools that could do both the traditional scanning and scanning of cloud assets – came to be.

We now are faced with a similar problem with agentic AI and what will soon be an entire fabric of interconnected agentic AI frameworks across your enterprise. helpnetsecurity.com

Amazon Recall & Defects Reporting Changes

Amazon customers saw major change this weekend: Here’s what to know
Amazon is the world’s biggest retailer but up till now they have not been required to report any recalls or defects on any of the products they sell. That will change this weekend.

In July, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a decision ruling that Amazon was a distributor of products that are defective or fail to meet federal safety standards.

As a result, the CPSC said that Amazon bears legal responsibility the recall of more than 400,000 products, including faulty carbon monoxide (CO) detectors, hairdryers that don’t have electrocution protection, and more.

Starting Sunday, Jan. 26, Amazon will begin posting recall notices and product safety alerts on its website the same day that they are issued by the CPSC. This includes both its own products and ones sold by third-party sellers.

“It’s significant because of the ruling. And it’s ultra-significant because it’s Amazon,” attorney Don Fountain said to CBS News. “[It] may not sound like much to the average person, but from a legal standpoint, that creates a huge duty on Amazon to be aware of and monitor and provide notice of safety defects and recalls to the consumer.”

Those who purchased a recalled or defective item will be notified by email and the information about the recall will be posted to each buyer’s orders page, according to WKRC.

The company will issue full refunds for anyone who can provide proof of destruction or disposal of recalled items. It will also keep recall notices on its website for a period of five years.

Amazon is also expected to submit monthly progress reports to the CPSC for five years. pennlive.com

Robberies, Incidents & Thefts

Business owner questions SFPD's effectiveness after $30K loss from repeat smash-and-grabs
A small business owner in San Francisco's Richmond District is beyond frustrated after his shop was targeted in four smash-and-grab burglaries involving vehicles ramming into the front door within six months. The latest incident has left him and neighbors questioning whether police could have done more to stop the suspects. The most recent break-in occurred early Wednesday around 3:15 a.m. when a car crashed into the front of Cigarettes Cheaper at 17th and Geary. Surveillance footage shows multiple suspects fleeing the scene with what the owner estimates was $20,000 to $30,000 worth of cigarettes. "It's not safe. It's horrible," said Rosie Cavan, who works in the building next door. "We've been here a little over a year and I think a car has driven in this guy's front door probably five or six times." Despite nearly 20 security cameras capturing the thefts, suspects have continued to evade arrest. Surveillance footage from the latest burglary shows two San Francisco police officers arriving on the scene, lights flashing. They exit their police cruiser, guns drawn as the suspects load cartons into a getaway vehicle. The officers do not approach the suspects who then flee the scene in two vehicles. This was perplexing and infuriating to the owner, who after so many break-ins, declined to go on camera out of safety concerns.  abc7news.com
