Tacoma, WA: Destructive protest Sunday night following police cruiser incident
About 150 people gathered in downtown Tacoma, Washington, on Sunday to protest the city's police department after a police officer drove into a crowd Saturday night, Tacoma Police Department public information officer Wendy Haddow told CNN.

The 58-year-old police officer was placed on administrative leave after running over at least one person and possibly striking others, according to a press release from TPD. He had been with the department for nearly 30 years. Two people were taken to the hospital following the incident, however none of the injures are believed to be life-threatening.

Some of the protesters Sunday night blocked streets with signs and traffic cones near where the incident occurred. Others overturned trashcans and lit the contents on fire, while a few smashed windows of cars and buildings. Officials are still working to assess the damage, Haddow said.

Portland anti-ICE protest Saturday prompts federal law enforcement response
An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Portland, Ore., was once again the target of protesters on Saturday night, according to news reports and posts on social media. "No borders! No nations! Abolish deportations!" the crowd chanted at one point, according to video footage from the scene.

Law enforcement officers from the Federal Protective Service were heard declaring an "unlawful assembly" around 10 p.m. local time and ordering the crowd to leave the area. The FPS is a unit of the Department of Homeland Security. The federal agents were seen responding to the crowd with tear gas and other crowd-control tools. foxnews.com

Seattle police chief announces tougher policy on prosecuting rioters
Seattle police will start cracking down on rioters who damage businesses, the city's interim police chief warned Saturday. Chief Adrian Diaz's pledge came days after anti-Biden rioters left Pike Place Market’s original Starbucks coffee shop with its windows smashed and numerous downtown business owners feeling abandoned by the city, according to reports.

After Capitol riot, police chiefs work to root out officers
with ties to extremist groups
The revelation that the Capitol mob — covered in emblems of extremist groups — included off-duty law enforcement officers possibly assisted by working police is escalating pressure on sheriffs and police chiefs nationwide to root out staff with ties to white supremacist and far-right armed groups.

Law enforcement leaders have faced criticism in the past for failing to police their own officers’ involvement with extremist groups. However, the selfie photos that off-duty officers took inside the Capitol during the violent siege, which left one police officer dead and dozens of others injured, were a wake-up call for many who have long denied the extent of the problem within policing.

National Sheriffs’ Association President David Mahoney said many police leaders have treated officers with extremist beliefs as outliers and have underestimated the damage they can inflict on the profession and the nation.

More than a dozen off-duty law enforcement officers were allegedly part of the Jan. 6 mob and are under investigation, according to a Washington Post analysis using news accounts and police and FBI reports. Approximately 17% of people in the U.S. have been infected with the coronavirus, a model by researches at the University of Washington estimates. Current data suggests that at least 7% of Americans have tested positive for COVID-19, but the model by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation assumes that testing isn't detecting all of the cases present in the population.

The model, updated Friday, estimates that the U.S. will report another 168,000 COVID-19 deaths before May, bringing the total to 569,000 deaths.

In that period, at least 40 states will have high or extreme stress on hospital beds, and 46 will have high or extreme stress on ICU capacity, according to the model.

Biden To Implement Travel Restrictions To Combat New Coronavirus Variants

A growing contingent of big-name companies — including Walmart, Starbucks and Microsoft — is teaming up with local governments and medical providers to get coronavirus shots in more people’s arms.

Walmart, the world’s biggest retailer, has been preparing to offer the vaccine at 5,000 U.S. locations. Starting this week, the retailer is making inoculations available through its stores in seven states, plus Chicago and Puerto Rico.

This week, Washington Gov. Jay Insle announced a public-private alliance with Starbucks, Microsoft, Costco and other homegrown brands to deliver vaccines in the state “as effectively and efficiently as possible.”

Meanwhile, Amazon said it is partnering with a Seattle hospital to deliver as many as 2,000 vaccinations to the public this weekend through a pop-up clinic.

“Big retailers are in an ideal position to help with the vaccine rollout because their core businesses are already geared around serving millions of customers day in and day out. They have locations right across the country and they have national distribution and logistics networks that are efficient and effective in getting products to every corner of the nation,” Neil Saunders, managing director of Global Data Retail in New York, said in comments emailed to The Post.

“They’re basically already doing what the government needs to do with vaccines. Moreover, a lot of the very big firms like Amazon and Walmart employ so many people that they can kick-start the program by vaccinating their own staff.” washingtonpost.com

Lynnwood, WA: Bookkeeper sentenced in $230K embezzlement scheme
The bookkeeper said she took the money from her work to support a gambling habit. She intended to pay it back, she said, but she never came out on top. In all, an internal investigation and followup detective work determined more than $230,000 had gone missing from Absco Solutions, a Lynnwood company that helps companies and agencies install security systems.

Sheryl Rucker, 46, of Monroe, was sentenced on Jan. 15 in Snohomish County Superior Court to two months in jail and ordered to pay more than $244,000 in restitution. She pleaded guilty to first-degree theft.

According to charging papers, she used her accountant position to manipulate financial records at Absco. Among the company’s clients are theaters, hotels, schools, stores like Nordstrom and Rosauers Supermarkets, Lumen Field in Seattle and federal government facilities.

Rucker’s bosses didn’t notice she had been taking money until after she resigned in June 2018, when she took a different job so she could work from home, deputy prosecutor Bob Hendrix wrote. Others at the company noticed the payroll accounts looked odd.

Fifty-five entries on the company’s QuickBooks accounting software had been manipulated or deleted, according to court papers. At least 29 paper checks had forged signatures and were made out to Rucker. She gave herself commission bonuses, even though her position didn’t qualify for commission.

Seventeen-year-old Malik Aaron went with some friends to Target last weekend, looking for snacks after their weekly high school ministry at Calvary Community Church. Tech Giant's Online Newsroom Breached
Chipmaker Intel Confirms Unauthorized Access of Earnings-Related Data
Intel shares on Friday at one point dropped by as much as 9% from Thursday evening's close at least partly because of reports the chipmaker was forced to release its Q4, 2020 results a little early because someone illegally accessed earnings-related data from the company.

The Financial Times Thursday quoted Intel CFO George Davis as saying an individual had accessed material pertaining to Intel's financial results from the chipmaker's corporate website before the company's scheduled earnings announcement.

Specifically, the individual accessed an infographic containing information on the results from a staging area on Intel's PR newsroom site. Upon discovering the illegal access, Intel decided to release its Q4 earnings about six minutes ahead of schedule, the FT reported Davis as saying.

Davis did not offer any further details on how the alleged intruder might have gained access to the infographic on Intel's PR website or whether other information had been illegally accessed as well. darkreading.com

The new Biden administration must address trade relations with China, and that could impact online retailers, say industry executives.

With the inauguration of Joe Biden as president, the Democratic Party now controls the White House and both houses of Congress for the first time in several years. Ecommerce executives are especially watching how the new administration and its congressional allies will regulate technology giants and address trade with China, as both could impact online retailers directly.

Other issues of concern include the handling of the coronavirus pandemic, minimum wage legislation and consumer protection laws.

One question likely to be on the agenda is a key provision of federal law that has protected online social networks and marketplaces, Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act, which says that website operators are not responsible for content posted on their sites by others.

There is considerable sentiment on both the left and right to rein in tech giants like Amazon, Google and Facebook, says Stuart Rose, a partner at Mirus Capital Advisers Inc., who has advised catalog and online retailers on acquisitions and fundraising for years. “They each may face antitrust actions due to their size and dominance of their individual markets,” Rose says.

Forrester Research analyst Sucharita Kodali says weakening the Section 230 protections could force marketplaces like those operated by Amazon.com Inc. and eBay Inc. to ensure merchants don’t sell dangerous goods. She says current state laws vary on who is responsible and court rulings have been inconsistent. If retailers have to more carefully assess the safety of the goods they sell, that could increase their costs, Mulpuru says. She adds that retailer costs could go up if the Democrats push U.S. companies to diversify away from manufacturing in China. digitalcommerce360.com

Buyer beware: That merchandise you are looking to purchase in commemoration of the inauguration of President Joe Biden might be fake. The Better Business Bureau is warning about gear tied to the inauguration that's not authentic as well as vendors accepting payments for items that never arrive.

"There will be plenty of look-alike, counterfeit merchandise that resembles the official gear," says the agency in a statement. "Look out for red flags, such as significantly lower pricing and poor-quality images."

The BBB advises purchasing inauguration merchandise directly from the official Presidential Inaugural Committee Store. The agency also warns about buying inauguration merchandise appearing in ads on social media sites. usatoday.com

Greenwich, CT: Plainclothes police unit highlights crime-fighting efforts
Two years ago, Greenwich police bolstered its detail of plainclothes officers working on Greenwich Avenue to target a rise in shoplifters, bank fraud perpetrators and organized retail-theft rings. As police administrators and elected officials work out plans for the future of law-enforcement on the Avenue and debate the use of police officers to direct traffic, the plainclothes unit has been deemed a success.

The program is called ORCA, an acronym for Organized Retail Crime Activity, police said. The unit aims to be proactive in confronting perpetrators, and it keeps a low profile. Its deployment was not publicly announced until recently. According to Capt. Mark Zuccerella, the department’s spokesman, improved cooperation with the local business community has been a key component of the initiative.

“One of the main functions that has allowed ORCA officers to achieve success has been the ability to engage with local business owners, managers and employees. ORCA officers have been able to instruct employees and business owners in ways of detecting and deterring fraud, in the trends and strategies utilized by shoplifters, and in sharing information regarding the criminal groups operating in the tri-state area,” he said in a statement.

“Through these relationships built with local businesses, ORCA officers have been able to make arrests that have included members of violent gangs and organized retail theft organizations,” he said. “ They have stopped crimes in progress and created an omnipresence in the Greenwich central business district. ORCA criminal cases will frequently become intertwined with federal law enforcement investigations, as well as thief of the New York Police Department and other surrounding state police agencies.” nhregister.com

Madisonville, KY: Woman faces theft charges after operating online boutique
Hundreds of women across the Tri-State who bought items from ‘Hello Beautiful Boutique’ are worried they be saying goodbye to their merchandise or refunds after ordering products from their Facebook page. The concern grew once the page became inactive this past summer. Lacie Turner, the woman police say is responsible for the transactions, has turned herself in to police after realizing she’s being charged with 93 counts of theft. Jessica Traylor said she started placing orders with Hello Beautiful Boutique in March, but by August she had a bad feeling she’d never get her stuff or a refund. Dallas County, AL: Man charged in theft of over $50,000 from Tractor Supply
Eric Read, 39, was charged with first-degree theft of property on Jan. 20, according to Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson. Read was arraigned for theft over $50,000 from Tracter Supply on Highway 80. Jackson said Read has charges in Greenville and will have a preliminary hearing on March 2 at 1:30 p.m. in the Dallas County Courthouse. selmatimesjournal.com

Berks County, PA: Suspected Target shoplifter flees Police, dies in quarry
A 23-year-old Minersville man died after he went over a fence surrounding a quarry and was found in the water in Berks County. Kevin Neiswender, assistant chief deputy with the Coroner’s office, said Sunday Joshua Fontanez-Rodriguez was pronounced dead on scene at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The quarry is located in Muhlenberg Township. An autopsy is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday. Muhlenberg Township Police said they were dispatched at 10:34 a.m. Friday to the Target store for a suspected shoplifter. They encountered Fontanez-Rodriguez who police said was the suspected retail theft suspect. He later ran from the store. tnonline.com

Lake Charles, LA: 15-year-old girl stabbed to death in grocery store during fight with 4 younger girls
A 15-year-old girl was stabbed to death at a grocery store during an alleged fight with four other girls, all of whom were younger than she was, police said. The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23 at a grocery store in Lake Charles, Louisiana. “In last night’s case, they stole knives from the actual store where they were at. It is really heart-breaking when we have to come in and pick up the pieces because so many families are damaged after this,” said Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso at a press conference on Sunday night. abcnews.com

A 15-year-old was shot and killed outside of a Family Dollar store on South Beckley Avenue Friday night. Police arrested Javius Williams, 20, in the death of Braylin Alexander Martinez, who was found shot multiple times sitting inside a 2005 Nissan Altima. Louisville, KY: Man admits connection to murder in 2020 while being investigated for multiple carjackings; 1 of the cars stolen was outside Walmart
According to four different arrest citations, a Louisville man is facing multiple charges after confessing to being complicit in a homicide while being questioned for several carjackings. One of the arrest citation says, 18-year-old Ethan Maddox admitted to being present in a October 2020 murder while being investigated by Middletown Police for recent carjackings. The murder occurred Oct. 27 in the 4000 block of Senn Road. Dalton Doggrell, 23, was pronounced dead on the scene after succumbing to multiple gun wounds.

In the citation, Maddox admitted to participating in taking the victim's vehicle and setting it on fire. He is facing a complicit in murder charge and tampering with evidence. Additionally, Maddox is facing robbery charges for his involvement in a string of carjackings.

According to three other arrest citations, the 18-year-old brandished a handgun and stole vehicles from different locations. The vehicles were stolen from parking lots of a Louisville Athletic Club and Walmart, both on Westport Road, and a residence in West Louisville. In total, Maddox is facing three robbery charges, a complicit in murder charge and tampering with evidence. whas11.com
