Amazon announced its search for a second, but equal, headquarters in September.
Its requirements, laid out in a request for proposals, included that the winner
be a metropolitan area with more than 1 million people, have a "stable and
business-friendly environment," and be in "urban or suburban locations with the
potential to attract and retain strong technical talent." At least 238 cities
and regions in the United States and Canada applied.
Amazon will now work with each of the candidate locations to dive deeper into
their proposals, request additional information, and evaluate the feasibility of
a future partnership, the company said. It expects to make a final decision
in 2018.

Rosamaria Sostilio, VP LP, Barnes & Noble, featured in Retail Executive Magazine
'The New Age Of LP - From Cybercrime To Security's Single Biggest Threat'
Sostilio explains why loss prevention has changed
drastically over the years and what retail executives need to do now to protect
their assets
To the loss prevention world, Rosamaria Sostilio needs no introduction. Her
impressive career in the field spans more than three decades. Due to her work in
her various positions within the asset protection pyramid, her industry
leadership roles, including former NRF LP council chair, and her current role as
VP of LP at Barnes & Noble, Sostilio is synonymous with LP. Yet, one
conversation with her will prove she is as humble as she is brilliant. See,
Sostilio earned her stripes in loss prevention at a time when very few women
worked in the field. And, while she’s keenly aware of this fact, which is fodder
for another article altogether, she credits her mentors for having helped her
along her path to success. As such, she continues to pay it forward to others
looking to build a career in loss prevention. Indeed, mentorship is a key part
of her multifaceted role, because loss prevention looks very different today
from what it did when Sostilio began her career in the ‘80s. From cybersecurity
to domestic terrorism, Sostilio weighs in on how drastically things have changed
in the world of loss prevention and what retail executives need to do now to
stay abreast of mounting risks and threats.
First of All, LP or AP?
Sostilio cut her teeth in retail the same way as most - by taking a job in
retail and getting bit by the “retail bug.” “You take a job in retail, not
thinking you are going to stay in retail, and then something happens,” she says.
“I really enjoy the fast, dynamic pace. Through various experiences, one thing
led to another, and I found myself in the security department, which is what it
was called in the ‘80s.”
From the ground up, Sostilio worked her way through various organizations and
became a manager at Saks Fifth Avenue in 1989. Her tenure with Saks lasted until
2016. “I have had every single job in what is now called the Asset Protection
Pyramid,” she says. Today, as VP of LP at Barnes & Noble, Sostilio is
responsible for all LP functions, and she’ll tell you that the LP industry has
evolved so much that the term loss prevention, which in itself has a reactionary
connotation, has morphed into the commonly accepted proactive term, asset
protection. “Technology changed loss prevention; it is evolving and expanding to
help retailers protect their assets - their people and their products - as
opposed to merely preventing loss. But, the more strategic reason for the move
to asset protection stems from three types of programs. Some retailers have a
security program, which focuses on theft and access control - the basics and
fundamentals of physical security. Others have a loss prevention program, which
means LP professionals have more responsibility when it comes to auditing and,
perhaps, safety. Finally, some retailers have an asset protection program, which
is an all-encompassing, holistic program that focuses on the multichannel
environment by assessing risk in a more sophisticated way. I say ‘holistic,’ but
what I really mean is the examination of issues from end to end, as opposed to
LP’s traditional siloed approach. In my younger years, loss prevention was a
siloed group that was only there when needed. But, scarce resources have caused
retail executives to do more with less, which has brought about the evolution
and involvement of asset protection into the organization. Loss prevention has
gained an important seat at the table by evolving into an asset protection
philosophy thanks to its strategic approach to mitigating risk.” Read

Immigration Raids Put Retailers on Alert
Recent raids by U.S. federal immigration agents targeting undocumented workers
at 7-Eleven convenience stores across the U.S. should serve as a warning to
other businesses to have their paperwork in order before agents arrive at their
doors, said one labor law attorney who represents companies in immigration
matters.
The raids last week at 7-Eleven stores by Immigration and Customs
Enforcement agents resulted in the arrests of 21 people. The raids occurred the
same day that the government announced a new worksite enforcement policy
built around three tenets. Those are inspections and fines; arrests of
undocumented workers and the employers who hire them; and an education component
to “instill a culture of compliance and accountability,” according to the
policy posted on the ICE website.
The emphasis on enforcement can expose employers to fines or even criminal
charges for failing to have proper documentation - known as an I-9 form - that
proves each employee is legally entitled to work in the U.S., said Shanon
Stevenson, a partner at Fisher Phillips and co-chair of the law firm’s global
immigration practice group. “We’re seeing an increase in the number of audits
of employers, and this new announcement of policy makes it more important
for employers to make sure they are complying with I-9,” she said in an
interview.
Companies that receive an inspection notice from ICE should take time to
review their documents, correct any errors or create I-9 forms for workers,
she said, as this will show intent to comply even if failing to have one from
the time a worker was hired, which could result in a fine. Ms. Stevenson said
companies should conduct self-audits and train their managers on how to
properly fill out I-9 forms. Companies cannot refuse to cooperate with a
federal immigration agent who shows up with an enforcement subpoena, but they
should keep accurate inventory of any files, computers and hard drives agents
may confiscate, she said. Finally, it is imperative employers don’t help
undocumented workers who try to flee during a raid. “That’s something that could
be seen as a criminal violation,” said Ms. Stevenson.

Baltimore's Network of 750 CitiWatch Cameras Predicts 7-Eleven Armed Robbery
Police in Baltimore have been using a wide-video network to stop criminals
before they do more harm. The network is composed of 750 cameras across the
city. A few nights ago, some of those cameras captured a scary scene, where
suspected robbers started shooting at officers. Minutes before, a camera above
predicted something was going to happen. The system is called CitiWatch
and it's been in operation for 12 years.
A
worker at a remote location spotted the two suspects lurking outside the
7-Eleven near Charles and Saratoga Streets. The moment they walked in, the
camera zoomed in. It was an armed robbery, but police already knew that. Within
minutes, officers arrived, and they stormed the store, where the suspects then
shot at them. Police say there’s evidence that may help detective find the
suspects in the 7-Eleven shootout.
Lieutenant Samuel Hood of the department said the monitors’ vigilance has
prevented attacks in the past.
The CitiWatch center is in an undisclosed location downtown, the staff are
all retired police officers and they monitor the cameras 24/7, 365 a year.
Lt. Hood says all the cameras are in public spaces, including the one that
captured the shootout. Police are still looking for the suspects, but there’s a
sigh of relief that the officers are OK.
Officials say many of the cameras are privately owned and certain institutions
likes Johns Hopkins have allowed them to tap into that network so that the
monitors can watch what’s happening across the city.

Fierce flu season estimated to cost employers $9 billion in lost productivity
If you think you’re coming down with the flu, here’s advice from all of us: Stay
home.
Sick employees could wind up costing employers $9 billion in lost productivity,
according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc., an executive coaching firm that
crunched the stats.
“The current strain is particularly aggressive and those who are sick can be
contagious for up to seven days. Workers who have the flu or need to care for
someone with the flu should absolutely not come into work,” Andrew Challenger,
the firm’s vice president of global outplacement consultancy, said in a
statement. “This is exactly why employers have sick leave benefits.”

Whole Foods’ out-of-stocks blamed on inventory management system
Whole Foods employees say stores are suffering from food shortages because of a
newly implemented inventory-management system called order-to-shelf, or OTS.
Whole Foods says the system reduces unnecessary inventory, lowers costs, and
frees up employees to focus on customer service. Employees acknowledge that less
food is spoiling in storage rooms, but they describe OTS as a "militaristic"
system that crushes morale and leads to many items being out of stock.
"Last week, we ran out of onions and potatoes twice," an employee of a Brooklyn
Whole Foods store said. "Entire aisles are empty at times."

TIC Group in a Strategic Partnership with ALL-TAG Corporation Announces the Expansion of Customized EAS Tag Recirculation Program to the Retailer Tesco
BOCA RATON, FLA. - JANUARY 11, 2018 - TIC Group, located in Melbourne
Australia, in a strategic partnership with
ALL-TAG Corporation announces
the addition of Tesco to its list of retailers benefitting from their EAS Tag
Recirculation Program that allows the retailers to source tag their apparel at
the apparel vendor’s location rather than at their stores or distribution
centers. Tesco joins TIC’s ever-growing list to include companies such as
Kohl’s.
Reusable EAS tags are shipped to apparel manufacturers anywhere in the world.
The apparel manufacturers affix the EAS tags to garments before they are shipped
to retail stores. The EAS Tags are removed in the retail stores at the
point-of-sale, and they are collected and recovered by TIC Group and ALL-Tag.
The EAS Tags are then sent to our processing center where they are inspected,
repackaged and recirculated back to the apparel manufacturers for another source
tagging Recirculation.
“By implementing EAS Tag Recirculation, retailers achieve higher levels of
security through precise tag placement on the garment, as well as far lower
labor costs by eliminating in store or distribution center tagging. The combined
companies have over 1,100 employees and operate 12 distribution and sorting
centers throughout Europe, The Americas and Asia,” commented Andy Gilbert,
ALL-Tag V.P. of Sales.

Kroger to roll out digital aisle displays to nearly 200 stores
Kroger is rolling out a new technology, called Kroger Edge, to nearly 200 stores
by the end of 2018, the company told Business Insider. The technology digitally
displays pricing and nutritional information, as well as video ads and coupons
for various products.
It will eventually communicate with customers' smartphones and highlight
products on their shopping lists as they walk down store aisles - helping them
to quickly select items in a sea of identical-looking items.

Coming to a grocery store near you: Self-driving shopping carts and smart
shelves
U.S. grocers are playing catch-up. Held back by razor-thin profit margins, which
have made investing difficult, grocery retailers lagged behind their peers in
Europe and parts of Asia in making strides with technology that reduces the time
shoppers spend navigating aisles, ringing up purchase and bagging items.
Then Amazon showed up and acquired Whole Foods. Now, there's more pressure to
roll out projects that may have been in a pilot phase - or try new things
entirely.
The future of America's grocery stores will include more scanning devices, smart
shelves with digital displays and self-driving shopping carts.

The Future of Retail Is AI-Powered and ‘Merchant-Imagined’
Fashion apparel retailing is being forced to change as consumer preferences
shift and technologies such as artificial intelligence power a new breed of
company that brings to market products, services and an overall shopping
experience that shoppers demand and are delighted by.
This transformation requires a cultural shift of traditional retailers (as well
as designers and manufacturers) that is centered on optimizing data and
leveraging consumer insights to offer products and services that shoppers
want. And the engine that will drive this change is AI. But that doesn’t mean
the creative merchant and design activities will be replaced by robots. Instead,
AI will eliminate redundancies and use automation to free up time to
allow merchants to focus on what they do best: create.

Mental Models & Security: Thinking Like a Hacker
These 7 approaches can change the way you tackle problems
In the world of information security, people are often told to "think like a
hacker." The problem is, if you think of a hacker within a very narrow
definition (e.g., someone who only breaks Web applications), it leads to a
counterproductive way of thinking and conducting business.
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, not least because isolated facts don't
stand on their own very well. As legendary investor Charlie Munger once said:
"Well, the first rule is that you can't really know anything if you just
remember isolated facts and try and bang 'em back. If the facts don't hang
together on a latticework of theory, you don't have them in a usable form.
You've got to have models in your head. And you've got to array your experience
both vicarious and direct on this latticework of models.
[You've] got to have multiple models because if you just have one or two that
you're using, the nature of human psychology is such that you'll torture reality
so that it fits your models, or at least you'll think it does."
This is worth bearing in mind for security pros. When we look at the thought
process of a (competent) security professional, it encompasses many mental
models. These don't relate exclusively to hacking or wider technology, but
instead cover principles that have broader applications.
Let's look at some general mental models and their security applications.

Pentagon considers nuclear response to retaliate for large cyber attacks
Why use hack-back tactics when you can drop a nuke on your cyber attackers?
According to the draft for the Pentagon’s 2018 Nuclear Posture Review, the U.S.
would consider using nuclear weapons to respond to non-nuclear attacks.
While the Pentagon’s proposed policy change suggests the U.S. should “only
consider the use of nuclear weapons in extreme circumstances to defend the vital
interests of the United States or its allies and partners,” large cyber attacks
are considered “extreme circumstances.”

Excerpts from Prove ‘Em
Innocent: The Art & Science of Workplace Investigations by John

Part
Twelve
One of the most important competencies of a
retail loss prevention / asset protection professional is to be capable of
conducting a fair, unbiased investigation thoroughly, confidentially, and
with absolute professionalism. Velke’s book provides new and experienced
investigators an opportunity to build on their investigative expertise using
real-life examples and exercises derived from more than 40 years of
investigative experience.

Poker
Poker has experienced explosive growth
during the last decade in part due to on-line poker sites and small
“hole-cameras” that show viewers what cards are held by each player. What
was once a card game appealing mostly to participants has now become a
spectator sport with televised tournaments. While watching poker games can
be entertaining, playing poker can be instructive and can develop helpful
investigative skills. Here is a short list of some of the skills acquired
and used by good poker players followed by a sentence or two illustrating
the investigative value of these same skills:
1. Good poker
players recognize nuances in body language and changes in tone
and inflection of voice. They call these “tells”. Good
investigators do the same thing and benefit by learning how to
recognize deception.
2. Good poker players take a disciplined
approach to play by calculating odds and playing to win. Good
investigators learn to take a disciplined approach to
investigations by carefully considering all investigative
options and selecting those with the greatest likelihood of
success first. Both groups get punished when they act
impulsively. |

Angry Alibaba points to ‘beefed-up’ IP protection
initiatives
According to the Chinese e-commerce giant, which announced the measures at an
Alibaba Anti-Counterfeiting Alliance (AACA) gathering of brands and rights
holders in Guangzhou, the initiatives will secure its online platforms and
further tighten intellectual property rights (IPR) protection.
The move comes just days after the US Trade Representative relisted Alibaba’s
Taobao online marketplace in its
2017 Special 301 Out-of-Cycle Review of Notorious Markets for the second
year in a row. To back the relisting, the USTR cites issues around accessing and
utilising takedown procedures on the platform, particularly for smaller
companies, a lack of metrics to identify the scale of the counterfeit problem,
and claims that the company’s enforcement programmes are “insufficient” to end
the sale of counterfeit products on the platform.
In response, Alibaba released a damning
11-page point-by-point rebuttal of the relisting, claiming it was being made
a “scapegoat by the USTR to win points in a highly politicised environment”.
It also mentioned the various actions undertaken to address the issue of IP
infringement, especially after its notorious markets listing in 2016, adding
that the USTR “completely ignores” not only the work Alibaba has been doing for
many years but also the fact that Alibaba has “met and dramatically exceeded”
the USTR’s three 2016 recommendations.

Gun Store Burglaries continue to rise; 577 stores
hit in 2017
Burglaries of gun stores last year rose for the fifth year in a row, as federal
firearm officials continue to warn store owners of the need to increase security
at their businesses. According to this year's Federal Firearms Licensee Burglary
and Robbery Statistics report, released Tuesday by the Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, 577 stores licensed to sell firearms were
burgled in 2017, up from 558 in 2016. The agency reported 33 robberies at FFLs

Education is a broad term usually defined by an individual as a singular focus
with an end result that oftentimes stagnates the brain and limits horizons.
Reaching milestones is incredibly important, but keeping your curiosity and
wonderment is the key to reaching beyond. No singular degree or certification
will bring you the success – it merely opens the door to more learning and the
realization that if you don't know something, you go find someone who does and
learn it from them.
Just a Thought,
Gus
