NRF 'Big Show' News

AI: Hot Topic at the NRF Big Show
At NRF, 40,000 humans contemplate AI

Artificial intelligence is useful to many areas of retail, from sourcing to customer service, making it a hot topic during this year’s Big Show.

At the National Retail Federation’s Big Show at the Javitz Center this year, the topic of AI was inescapable.

Nvidia’s Azita Martin, who is the company’s vice president and general manager for retail and CPG, helped set the tone Sunday morning, as she discussed “game-changing times for the retail industry” with Walmart U.S. chief John Furner. The next day she spoke with Lowe’s Chief Digital and Information Officer Seemantini Godbole and Randy Lack of Dell Technologies about how the home improvement retailer “leverages AI to become an agile digital retailer.”

“AI is real, and I encourage all of you to get started,” Martin told the NRF audience, after Furner noted that AI can be intimidating. “I would first of all really recommend that the AI initiatives be top-driven. In other words, you need executive sponsorship. You need to have the top executives in your company believing. The second thing I would look at is, what are some of your biggest business challenges?”

Because of the massive number of AI-related sessions, speakers and vendors at the Big Show this year, there is no way to capture all that was said on this vast topic, but here are four themes that emerged.

AI could revolutionize supply chains
AI pumps up personalization, but privacy remains a concern
The use-case isn’t always clear
At least for now, there is no retail without humans

The U.S. Crime Surge
The Retail Impact

Deep Dive Into California's Anti-Theft Prop 36

Tougher on Crime: Investigating California's Proposition 36
Crime was on the 2024 ballot in California, and the decision by voters was decisive. Despite vocal opposition from Gov. Gavin Newsom and Democratic Party leaders, California voters overwhelmingly passed Proposition 36.

Proposition 36 aims to revive drug court participation and increase penalties for certain theft and drug offenses in California. This year-long investigation by CBS News California investigative correspondent Julie Watts examines the many components of California's new tougher-on-crime law.

CHAPTER 1: The intersection of homelessness, addiction and retail theft

The initiative's official name is "The Homelessness, Drug Addiction, and Theft Reduction Act." The name references three issues that supporters believe are intertwined. We begin our examination of Prop 36 at the intersection of addiction, homelessness, and retail theft.

CHAPTER 2: What happens to retail theft ringleaders?

In the lead-up to the election, California Governor Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta publicized thousands of statewide organized retail theft arrests, but what the press releases didn't say is what happens to the retail theft ring leaders after the arrests.

No one could tell us how many of those people arrested for organized retail theft were actually sentenced, let alone how many went to jail, received treatment, or reoffended. It turned out no one was keeping track. So we tracked down a few ourselves.

CHAPTER 3: Playing politics with Alexandra's memory

While retail theft and drug courts are key components of Prop 36, a warning for fentanyl dealers known as "Alexandra's Law" pit democratic leadership against grieving parents and exposed how things really work in California's State Capitol.

Alexandra's story provides a glimpse of California politics through the eyes of two grieving parents who say powerful politicians played politics with their daughter's memory. cbsnews.com

Walgreens Anti-Theft Conundrum Makes More Headlines
Walgreens CEO admits anti-theft measures hurt sales: ‘When you lock things up, you don’t sell as many of them’
The top executive at
Walgreens lamented the loss of sales from putting items like toothpaste behind lock and key to crack down on rampant shoplifting that has plagued pharmacy chains around the country.

When you lock things up…you don’t sell as many of them. We’ve kind of proven that pretty conclusively,” Tim Wentworth, CEO of Walgreens Boots Alliance, told investors during a recent earnings call.

Wentworth said that
Walgreens saw a 52% increase in “shrink” — an industry term which means a loss of inventory that cannot be accounted for through sales or other legitimate means — after reporting earnings last Friday.

He went on to say that
grappling with retail theft was akin to a “hand-to-hand combat battle.” Walgreens is now exploring creative solutions to combat shrink without compromising the shopping experience, though Wentworth was vague about specifics.

This approach aims to
balance security needs with consumer convenience, signaling a shift from past practices. nypost.com

LA Wildfire Triggers Crime Surge
New task force to fight crime related to LA area's devastating wildfires

The partnership bringing together the LAPD, FBI and other law enforcement will encourage regular collaboration on intelligence and facilitate efficient prosecutions related to the wildfires in Southern California, authorities say

As the Los Angeles area reels from the ongoing wildfires, local and federal law enforcement agencies are teaming up to
crack down on wildfire-related crime across the region.

The Joint Regional Fire Crimes Task Force
will focus on looting, burglary, impersonation offenses, arson, illegal drone activity and fraud "targeting both disaster victims and those wishing to make charitable donations," according to an announcement from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California Wednesday.

Since the fires started last Tuesday night, more than 50 people have been arrested — nine of which have been charged — in connection with
looting, burglary, impersonation or curfew violations, authorities said.

Fraud has also been a central issue as both victims and good Samaritans struggle to navigate where their money is going. The task force intends to investigate not only individual acts of fraud, but price gouging for essential needs, contractor fraud and the misuse of federal programs, including through Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Small Business Administration. nbclosangeles.com

UK's Shoplifting Crackdown
300 shoplifters arrested across December as GMP continues to tackle retail crime
GMP’s work tackling retail crime continued
throughout December and the festive period, as hundreds of arrests were made, with the vast majority resulting in charges.

Across December 2024,
296 arrests relating to shoplifting and theft from businesses were recorded force-wide, resulting in 221 being charged, with 133 remanded at the time of their arrest.

Others were dealt with via other methods, including street warnings, community resolutions, and signposting to the appropriate resources where necessary.

Neighbourhood teams across the force are committed to tackling retail crime, ensuring the safety of staff, and assisting stores as they continue to combat the issues arising from shoplifters. gmp.police.uk

Retail's Tricky Balancing Act on Returns
Returns — and their challenges — are rising. Here’s how retailers are responding.

Companies face a multifaceted balancing act of controlling costs, stopping fraud and maintaining engagement and flexibility for customers.

Retailers’ ability to offer customers many happy returns is becoming more difficult and costly.

Total returns in retail amounted to $743 billion in 2023, according to a report from the National Retail Federation. That equates to $145 million in merchandise returns for every $1 billion in sales. This year, shoppers are expected to return $890 billion in merchandise, which represents nearly 17% of retailers’ annual sales, according to a recent NRF report.

Faced with the escalating challenge of returns, retailers are taking diverging approaches to dealing with the issue. And while not all returns involve fraud, that is one of the issues retailers are addressing. Most of the retailers surveyed in the NRF’s latest report said return-related fraud and other exploitative behavior was an issue for their business.

Buying multiple items with the intent to return some of them, also known as bracketing, has grown among younger people, the NRF found, with 51% of Generation Z consumers acknowledging they’ve done it.

Morin said Narvar’s research has found rising rates of what it terms “friendly fraud” — behaviors like bracketing or wardrobing, where someone buys and wears an item with the intention of returning it. But Narvar also found rising rates of potentially criminal return policy abuse.

Indeed, a return abuse or fraud crackdown must be balanced with maintaining customer experience, Katherine Cullen, the NRF’s vice president of industry and consumer insights, said in the organization’s latest report. Other experts echoed that perspective. retaildive.com

Retail Hiring and Firing in Flux
How Can Retailers Improve Frontline Worker Retention?
Frontline retail work can often be an arduous affair. Relatively low pay, unreliable work hours and uncertain shift schedules, an increasingly belligerent or impatient customer base and unforgiving management are common complaints among members of this cohort.

However, as Retail Dive indicated, the very face of retail could be undergoing something of a shift. Hirings and firings are in flux, according to data cited by the outlet as originating from Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

Retail Employees Are Reluctant To Return to the Business Once They Leave

One thing to note before turning to the topic of retention: Retail workers are leaving the business entirely after quitting their gigs, according to McKinsey & Company research. In fact, 72% of retail employees who had decided to leave their jobs — as surveyed in May 2023 by McKinsey & Company — had left the industry altogether.

The two most prominent reasons for attrition in the retail sector, as illuminated by survey data, had shifted to rest on a lack of overall career development opportunities as well as uncompetitive compensation. Rounding out the top three reasons that frontline workers are quitting their posts? A lack of inspiring leadership.

One interesting subset of data concerning this last attrition trigger is that frontline retail managers cited a lack of inspiring leadership as being more pressing of an issue than any other — 11 points higher than nonmanagers. This gestures towards a notion that while in-store managers may be pulling their weight when it comes to supporting their staff as best they can, the same cannot be said for corporate offering meaningful support and leadership to said frontline managers. retailwire.com

2nd Bankruptcy in a Year
Joann files for bankruptcy for the second time in a year

The crafts retailer was forced back into Chapter 11 by the wider retail environment and its own financial and inventory woes, the company said.

Joann on Wednesday said it has filed under Chapter 11 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, with a plan to sell itself.

The crafts retailer, whose stores and e-commerce site remain open for business, is asking to court to approve a sale of “substantially all of its assets,” with Gordon Brothers as a stalking horse bidder.

Joann filed for bankruptcy last March, exiting in April as a private company owned by its creditors. According to court documents filed this week, its liabilities range between $1 billion and $10 billion. retaildive.com

UK: NI increase will force retailers to raise prices, BRC warns
The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has warned that the National Insurance Increase, set to come into place this April, will force retailers to put up prices after it found that two thirds of CFOs said they will do so in response to the change. The BRC said its survey of CFOs at 52 leading retailers revealed “significant concern” about trading conditions over the next 12 months.

Cybersecurity Issues A Growing Concern Among Businesses
Cyber disruptions remain top business risk concern in US, globally

A report from Allianz shows the global disruption caused by CrowdStrike’s IT mishap added to longtime concerns about data breaches and ransomware.

Cybersecurity risk, including ransomware, data breaches and IT disruptions, remained the top business concern in the U.S. and worldwide over the past year, according to the Allianz Risk Barometer released Wednesday.

Cyber incidents topped the global list of business risks for the fourth-consecutive year, representing more than 1 in 3 of those surveyed in the report. The margin between the top business risks was the widest ever, with a 7% gap between cyber and business interruption, the second largest global concern.

The report is based on a survey of almost 4,000 risk management experts in 106 countries and territories. The executive respondents include risk managers, brokers, CEOs and insurance experts.

Three in 5 respondents said data breaches were their top cyber concern, followed by 57% fearing attacks on critical infrastructure and physical assets.

Operational resilience has become a key concern among business leaders, in terms of making sure they can maintain operations in the face of a cyberattack as well as other disruptive events.

Business interruption was the second biggest concern globally, in a year when supply chains were heavily stress tested. cybersecuritydive.com

Ransomware Top Organizational Risk
World Economic Forum spotlights growing gap in cyber readiness

Ransomware remains the top cyber risk concern among executives, but CISOs are almost twice as likely as CEOs to make that determination.

Ransomware is the top organizational cyber risk this year, the World Economic Forum said in its Global Cybersecurity Outlook for 2025. Nearly half of all respondents to the annual global survey said a ransomware attack concerns them the most.

While ransomware ranked as the top cyber risk among CEOs and CISOs, the report found a significant gap in the level of concern between the executive roles. Nearly 1 in 3 CEOs said ransomware is their top cyber risk concern, but more than half of CISOs made the same determination.

Executives in the study expect significant innovations in ransomware attacks, including the continued growth of ransomware-as-a-service models, which further the commoditization of cybercriminal activity. Nearly 3 in 4 chief risk officers said they anticipate severe organizational disruptions from cyber risks and criminal activity. cybersecuritydive.com

The Web is Riddled with Untrustworthy Product Recommendations

It’s harder than ever to find reliable product recommendations online

AI, paid content creators and algorithm high jinks are burying trustworthy recommendations.

The cardinal rule of smart shopping is to do your research. For most of us that means an online search to find product recommendations. But in an era of artificial intelligence and paid content creators, you can’t always trust the results.

There are plenty of organizations that conduct rigorous and independent product tests with reliable recommendations — think Consumer Reports, Wirecutter, Good Housekeeping and America’s Test Kitchen, among others. Many other “best-of” lists, though, are filled with sponsored content, affiliate links and generic “reviews” generated by bots or unqualified writers.

“With the growth of SEO content farms, affiliate mills and influencers who don’t play by the rules, it’s a pretty polluted ecosystem,” says Nilay Patel, editor in chief of the Verge, a technology and culture website.

Further complicating things is that search engines, particularly Google, often prioritize the less reliable lists. In many cases, that’s because defunct publications have sold website access or created new sections for affiliate content mills. In turn, the third-party business exploits metrics in the Google search algorithm to take advantage of the original site’s credibility — for news, weather or another topic — and then uses that credibility to rank higher on any search term they want to, says Benjamin Buckley, a publishing and retail industry consultant in Westfield, New Jersey.

As a result, the unbiased specialty sites whose goal is to inform (rather than sell), including some major players, have been pushed so far down by Google indexing that the average consumer no longer finds them. washingtonpost.com

AI Search Results Driving E-Commerce Traffic
ChatGPT Driving Increased Traffic to Retailers and Brands in 2025, Particularly From Younger Generations
SEO has long been regarded as a staple of internet marketing and publishing culture, with an entire industry popping into existence to support its often inscrutable and ever-changing nature.

Now, as Modern Retail indicated, it seems that a new path forward for retailers and brands looking to attract eyeballs is opening up: AI search results. Being included in queries related to certain keywords, questions, or concerns may drive significant traffic to your website or blog, with Modern Retail providing two case studies to support this theory.

ChatGPT Drives Traffic to Viv, Joe & Bella

Modern Retail cast the spotlight on two brands which had greatly benefited from ChatGPT results — period care company Viv and adaptive apparel brand Joe & Bella.

In Viv’s case, a study by the scientific journal “Environment International” was the impetus for increased AI queries coming from users looking for sustainable menstrual products that were free of toxic elements. Viv’s blog benefited from these search results, seeing a 400% increase in traffic as a result, and a 436% increased sales conversion rate from users who found the blog via AI responses. retailwire.com

They ended up at the Grand Beach Hotel in Miami Beach. At the time, arrest records said that the two lived in southwest Miami-Dade. Police in full gear caught them because they were ready to take them down. Men named Garcia and Hernandez are being charged with armed robbery, attack, and kidnapping in Tennessee.  newsbreak.com

Harrisburg, PA: Update: Illegal immigrant sentenced for Apple gift card scam at Western Pennsylvania Wal-Mart stores
A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to up to three years in prison for orchestrating a scheme to steal and alter Apple gift cards from Wal-Mart stores in Western Pennsylvania, defrauding both businesses and consumers in the process. Zhixiang Chen, a Chinese national in the United States illegally, pleaded guilty in Lawrence County Court to corrupt organizations and organized retail crime. The judge ordered Chen to serve 1.5 to 3 years in jail, forfeit $16,143 in stolen funds and equipment, and pay a $25,000 fine. Chen is also banned from all Wal-Mart stores and faces deportation proceedings. Unknowing customers would purchase the cards, only to find the balances drained after loading them with value.  shorenewsnetwork.com
