New Survey Confirms Americans Support Face Recognition for Retail and Public Safety
New survey data has been released showing that Americans overwhelmingly support the use of facial recognition technology for security use cases. The survey, conducted by the Center for Data Innovation, polled 3,151 U.S. adults in December, asking them a variety of questions about how they view facial recognition.

OVERWHELMING SUPPORT FOR RETAIL AND PUBLIC SAFETY FACE RECOGNITION USE CASES
The survey revealed that Americans are largely comfortable exchanging some privacy for the vast societal benefits that face recognition provides.

● Only one in four Americans now believe that the federal government should strictly limit the use of facial recognition technology.

NRF Foundation Gala raises over $3.2 Million to shape future talent in retail
The fifth annual NRF Foundation Gala took place Sunday at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel in New York City, featuring an inspiring awards program and formal dinner that included both silent and live auctions. The star-studded event raised more than $3.2 million to support the Foundation’s programs, including educational initiatives, student scholarships and RISE Up, a powerful, industry-backed credentialing program.

The Gala was attended by more than 1,000 retail CEOs and senior executives, industry insiders, celebrities and students who came together to support the future of retail talent and to celebrate The List of People Shaping Retail's Future. Google Sued for Allegedly Covering Up Sexual Misconduct Allegations
A shareholder for Google's parent company Alphabet has sued the tech giant, accusing it of covering up sexual harassment claims against some of its top executives. The lawsuit filed by shareholder James Martin said Alphabet's board of directors, including Larry Page, Sergey Brin and Eric Schmidt, were directly involved in the coverup. Martin supported his lawsuit with minutes from Alphabet board meetings in 2014 and 2016 concerning Andy Rubin and Amit Singhal, respectively. Both former Google executives left the company after sexual harassment complaints -- Rubin, in particular, received a $90 million exit package even though an internal investigation found the claims against him credible.

The lawsuit is asking Rubin and other high-ranking execs to return their exit packages. It's also asking Alphabet to allow non-management shareholders to nominate at least three board members and to change its stock structure, which currently gives Page and Brin a supermajority voting share. In addition, it wants to end non-disclosure agreements and mandatory arbitrations that prevent sexual harassment claims from going public. entrepreneur.com

Gymboree Expected to File for Bankruptcy for Second Time in Two Years
Plans to close all 900 stores
Children’s clothing retailer Gymboree Group Inc. is expected to seek bankruptcy protection this week, with plans to close all 900 of its stores, according to people familiar with the matter. The expected bankruptcy comes less than two years after the retailer’s first stint in bankruptcy court, when it closed a portion of its stores and saw lenders take control of the business.

The stores operate under the banners Gymboree, Janie and Jack and Crazy 8. In December, Gymboree announced it began a strategic review of the three brands, which could result in a sale or other transactions at the brand level.

While Gymboree is expected to liquidate, the fate of Janie and Jack stores is still up in the air, one of the people said. If no buyer can be found, the chain could also be liquidated.

At the time of its first bankruptcy filing, Gymboree had more than 1,280 stores, of which it immediately closed 375. Those hundreds of surviving stores continued to weigh down the company. wsj.com

Ollie's Bargain Outlet buying up remains of Toys R Us Stores
Ollie's stock (OLLI) has nearly quadrupled since it went public in 2015. The company has posted 18 straight quarters of comparable store sales growth. Profit has more than tripled since the IPO. On Friday, Ollie's said that store sales during the holidays increased 7.1% from a year ago and raised its guidance.

Ollie's is currently capitalizing on Toys "R" Us' liquidation. It has bought 12 former Toys "R" Us sites and is leasing another six. In November, Ollie's opened its 300th store at an old Toys "R" Us location in Maryland. Stepping into Toys "R" Us spots is one part of Ollie's plan to enter states like Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. It plans to open up to 650 new stores around the country. cnn.com

James Allen, a division of Signet Jewelers, and Value City Furniture are among the first U.S. retailers to deploy a solution that helps personize the in-store shopping experience, boosting store performance in the process.

Loss Prevention Foundation (LPF) Scholarships

$233,460 awarded to date to support loss prevention certification; up to 25 recipients to be selected

PITTSBURGH, January 15, 2019 – Vector Security, Inc., the provider of intelligent mobile security and automation solutions to homes and businesses, is accepting applications for its Loss Prevention Foundation (LPF) scholarship program from now through March 31, 2019. The scholarships provide financial support to loss prevention professionals – or those who have an interest in loss prevention – seeking to obtain LPQ and LPC certifications. Vector Security began awarding the scholarships in 2009 in support of career development and continuing education for professionals in this important and rapidly-growing industry.

“As the security needs of multi-site businesses continue to change, including the need to integrate IT and network solutions into loss prevention more closely, it becomes increasingly important for LP professionals to stay current on industry trends and solutions,” said Michael T. Grady, LPC, Executive Vice President, Vector Security Networks. Continuing education and certification, such as LPQ and LPC, in this field will help LP professionals meet the challenges of their profession, while providing the best talent.”

Vector Security has awarded 231 scholarships totaling $233,460 since the program began in 2009. The scholarships cover all course and examination fees for retail loss prevention professionals who wish to obtain LPF’s Loss Prevention Qualified (LPQ) or Loss Prevention Certified (LPC) certifications.

In 2012, the scholarship program was expanded into Canada and will continue this year as well. A total of 10 LPQ and 10 LPC scholarships will be awarded to U.S.-based professionals, while another five LPC scholarships will be awarded to Canadian-based professionals.

Anyone currently in the loss prevention industry, or has an interest in the industry, may apply for an LPQ scholarship. Those applying for the LPC scholarship must meet certain eligibility requirements. Detailed information can be found at www.vectorsecurity.com/lpfscholarship.

Average Cost of Cyberattack Now Exceeds $1 Million
A new report by Radware shows that the average cost of a cyberattack now exceeds $1 million.

The 2018-2019 Global Application and Network Security Report noted that for those organizations that calculate (versus estimate) the cost of an attack, that number increases to $1.67M. The top impact of cyberattacks, as reported by respondents, is operational/productivity loss (54%), followed by negative customer experience (43%). What’s more, almost half (45%) reported that the goal of the attacks they suffered was service disruption. Another third (35%) said the goal was data theft. securitymagazine.com

Customer data over two years impacted in OXO International data breach
OXO International, a US-based manufacturer of homeware, has disclosed a data breach which may have exposed customer information over the course of two years.

The incident involved “sophisticated criminal activity” that may have exposed customer’s personal information, and customers who entered data on the oxo.com domain between June 2017 and October 2018 according to the manufacturer.

Specifically, data entered between June 9, 2017 -- November 28, 2017, June 8, 2018 –- June 9, 2018, and July 20, 2018 -- October 16, 2018 has potentially been exposed.

The business added that names, billing and shipping addresses, as well as credit card information were involved in the data breach. OXO blamed the incident on “unauthorized code” which found its way on to the company's website. Beyond the code being “malicious”, OXO has not revealed any further details concerning how the malware landed on the oxo.com domain or who may be responsible. thepaypers.com

Shutdown a Threat to IT Security Recruitment
As the US inches toward a full month of a government shutdown, concerns over the impact on national security and cybersecurity continue to mount, and according to security experts from Juniper Networks, Untangle and Vectra, the shutdown may affect government IT recruiting and hiring.

With the skills gap being one of the hurdles every company must clear in order to mature in their overall cybersecurity posture, most organizations are trying to get more creative when it comes to recruitment. The government, though, is in its 25th day of a shutdown.

“The biggest impact of the shutdown, in my opinion, is that furloughing cybersecurity analysts creates a vulnerability for government networks. As we all know, the top problem in security today is the shortage of trained cybersecurity professionals, and the cybersecurity skills shortage was already getting worse in 2018 with millions of unfilled cybersecurity jobs,” said Nick Bilogorskiy, cybersecurity strategist at Juniper Networks. infosecurity-magazine.com

The quiet threat inside ‘internet of things’ devices
As Americans increasingly buy and install smart devices in their homes, all those cheap interconnected devices create new security problems for individuals and society as a whole. Alibaba claims success in fight against fake goods on Taobao
Just over one in every 10,000 orders on Alibaba's Taobao marketplace last year involved suspected fake goods, the Chinese tech giant has said as it claimed success in reducing piracy on the world's largest e-commerce platform. In its annual intellectual property (IP) protection report last week, Alibaba said big data analysis and closer cooperation with brands and law enforcement had snuffed out counterfeiting on Taobao.

In recent years, Alibaba has publicly intensified its fight against counterfeit goods, even going as far as establishing a research institute - on World Intellectual Property Day last April - to set rules in IP protection.

While the USTR noted that Alibaba had taken positive steps to fight piracy, it said a high volume of infringing products reportedly continue to be sold on Taobao. Experts said counterfeiters have evolved their tactics in their cat-and-mouse game with IP-protection countermeasures on Taobao.

Last November, trademark law journal World Trademark Review found that Taobao remains the go-to platform for fake consumer goods.

A casual check on Monday (Jan 14) showed that fake luxury goods were still easily available on Taobao but under creative code names. Counterfeit Gucci Jackets were labelled "G-house" and knockoff Ralph Lauren polos were peddled under "Little horse brand". Both logos were blurred out or pixelated to prevent automatic flagging by Taobao.

To cater to international buyers, counterfeiters were also increasingly hawking their goods on foreign social media, such as Whatsapp and Instagram, and through third-party image hosting sites such as Yupoo. straitstimes.com

Digital Merchants Too Focused on Fraud at Checkout: Report
E-commerce merchants still focus most of their fraud prevention efforts at the point of the transaction rather than expanding those efforts to meet an evolving threat, a new report asserts. Online retailers will lose $130 billion over the next five years, according to U.K. research firm and consultancy Juniper Research, while they continue to fight an increasingly complex, cross-channel threat using obsolete technology.

In addition to technology that assesses the likelihood of fraud at checkout, researchers said an effective layered solution should include systems that verify identity during login and monitor behavior while shoppers are interacting with the site. According to Online Payment Fraud: Emerging Threats, Segment Analysis & Market Forecasts 2018-2023, merchants are hesitating to implement comprehensive fraud detection and prevention systems like this because they perceive the cost to be too high. Pennsylvania State Police in Bethlehem are searching for a man they say cut $8,000 worth of iPhones from a Hanover Township, Northampton County cellphone store display and fled with the goods. Chicago, IL: Convicted felon pockets $7k ring from jewelry store
Previously convicted of multiple felony retail thefts
A man was charged with allegedly stealing a ring worth nearly $7,000 on Monday from a jewelry store in the South Loop. James Winston, 55, appeared in bond court Saturday, five days after he pocketed a ring that had a price tag of $6,699 from Kay Jewelers. The jeweler handed him the ring to look at, which Winston took over to a magnifier in the store where he pretended to examine it. Winston then allegedly slipped the ring into his pocket and handed another ring back to the jeweler. The jeweler noticed the difference immediately and questioned Winston, at which point he fled the store. suntimes.com

Exeter Township, PA: Woman diagnosed with kleptomania sentenced for 13th retail theft
As he prepared to sentence an Exeter Township woman for her 13th retail theft conviction Monday, Judge Patrick T. Barrett said he didn't know if there was anything he could do to help change the diagnosed kleptomaniac. The 63-year-old woman's retail theft history dates back to 1995 and includes stints in prison, on house arrest and on probation. Her most recent sentence in June 2016 called for a year of house arrest during six years of probation and for Heller to undergo psychiatric treatment and continue therapy throughout the entirety of the sentence. readingeagle.com

Decatur, IL: Man swaps barcodes to pay 48 cents for $300 in Walmart items
A man who switched barcode labels in a Decatur store and tried to walk away having paid 48 cents for items valued at nearly $300 was caught before he made it out the door, police said. The affidavit quoted the man as telling officers he had been told “about a scam” involving swapped barcodes and wanted to see if it would work. The affidavit described how he switched codes from Kool-Aid packets for a KitchenAid food mixer and a Lego toy set together valued at $298.97. herald-review.com

Baltimore, MD: Man fatally shot by liquor store employee during attempted robbery
A man who attempted to rob a Canton liquor store and was shot by an employee has died from his injuries, according to the Baltimore Police Department. The robbery attempt at the House of Spirits liquor store Saturday night marked the second time in two months the shop had been held up at gunpoint. A man armed with a gun entered the store at 2300 Fleet St. and announced a robbery, and he was shot by a store employee who also had a gun, police said. The suspect fled the shop and collapsed on the 500 block of Collington Ave. He was taken to a hospital and died Saturday night, according to police. baltimoresun.com

Police in a North Carolina town say a person was shot and killed during a dispute at a store inside a mall. Multiple news outlets report the shooting occurred shortly after midday Sunday in the DTLR store in Carolina Place Mall in Pineville and that a suspect is in custody. The altercation involved an employee and someone entering the shoe and fashion store, and it appears to have been neither a random act nor related to a robbery. 660citynews.com

Richmond, VA: Shot fired at knife-carrying robber who may have struck 14 times in 13 days
Prior to hitting the Carytown store, there had been a robbery call at the A-Plus store in Chesterfield County. Then, in the heart of the city, Crime insider sources said the robber was at it again. Except this time he walked into the Cary Street Mini-Mart with a knife, and terrorized a female clerk until the owner’s son stepped in and fired a shot. Police believe the suspect may have suffered a graze wound, Crime Insider sources said. The robber has shown up in surveillance video all over Central Virginia. In all, Crime Insider sources believe the robber with a knife has struck at least 14 times in 13 days. wtvr.com

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson’s brother fired four gunshots at two armed men robbing a grocery store where he works, according to police reports. William M. Jackson, 70, told police he fired four shots at the two robbers after they pulled out guns and tried to rob the store where he works. Las Vegas, NV: 'Please don't hurt us': Four men carrying rifles terrorize smoke shop in armed robbery
An in-store surveillance camera captured a violent armed robbery at a smoke shop in west Las Vegas over the weekend. Surveillance video showed four masked men armed with handguns and rifles entering the store and demanding two managers inside to the ground. “Please please don’t hurt us, just take it,” one of the managers can be heard saying on the video. The robbery lasted about eight minutes, according to the surveillance footage. A manager was forced to open the register as another suspect opened up display cases and took what they could, as seen on the video. At one point, one of the suspects was pointing a rifle over the counter, straight at one of the employees lying face down. ktnv.com

St. Ann, MO: Officer injured, two charged in 'crazy'
bi-state police chase after theft from Menard's
A man and woman have been charged in a high-speed chase from St. Ann to Bellefontaine Neighbors on Sunday that included a crash that injured an officer. It began when an off-duty St. Ann police major heard a description of a vehicle wanted in a theft from a Menards store. The major spotted the vehicle, a Dodge Ram pickup with two large doors and other stolen items in the back. At one point, the driver handed the female passenger a handgun, and she tried to throw it into the river. The gun didn't make it to the river and an officer was able to recover it. The officer's vehicle slammed into a concrete median and the pickup slid to a stop. Both suspects ran. The woman was tackled to the ground after a foot chase and the man dropped to the ground. The officer was taken to a hospital where he was treated for a fractured chin, broken nose and a concussion. stltoday.com

Milford, DE: Couple steals customer's credit card at Peebles, then uses it for Walmart purchases
Milford Police are currently working to identify suspect(s) who they say stole a person’s wallet at a local department store. According to officials, the incident happened at the Milford Peebles store, located at 654 N DuPont Blvd, on December 7th between 3 PM and 5 PM. The suspects (pictured above) then allegedly used one of the victim’s stolen credit cards at the Milford Walmart on the same day, after the theft occurred. wmdt.com
