Matt Sack Takes Control of Prosegur's EAS Division, Spins It off as Independent Company Named Global Security Solutions

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. - Prosegur has decided to spin-off its EAS and RFID division in the U.S., which will be now be fully controlled and managed by Matt Sack, one of the top leaders in the loss prevention solutions industry. Sack, who has served as the division's CEO most recently, has renamed the newly-independent company Global Security Solutions.

"Since 2019, our organization has grown globally, introducing new solutions for global and local retail chains, and not just in the electronic article surveillance (EAS) arena but in radio-frequency identification (RFID) and robotics," said Sack. "Spinning off the division into an independent company, Global Security Solutions, will allow us to increase the focus on the development of new technologies beyond the traditional security applications, especially when it comes to RFID. At the same time, we remain as committed as ever to serving our clients in the retail world and helping them meet and exceed their asset protection objectives."

According to Sack, the organization has launched a series of new solutions that promise to transform how retailers think of loss prevention. Two of those solutions, ThinLine RFID antennas and Focus4 RFID readers, have entered the market to great success, delivering what retail chains have long searched for - an RFID system that can truly function as both an electronic article surveillance solution as well as an inventory tracking system with a high rate of accuracy. Coupled with the organization's new RFID labels and tags, this system will enable retailers to have an unparalleled new insight into their store operations, according to Sack.

The U.S. Crime Surge
The Retail Impact

Retail Crime is Still Rising, But Is There Light at the End of the Tunnel?

Progress & opportunities remain in fight against retail crime

New NRF study shows retail crime is still rising

As the new year begins, retailers are continuing their fight against elevated levels of theft, violence and organized retail crime. According to a new NRF study conducted in partnership with the Loss Prevention Research Council and sponsored by Sensormatic Solutions, retailers surveyed experienced a 26% increase in average shoplifting incidents from 2022 to 2023, while 42% of retailers reported an increase in shoplifting events that involved the threat or act of violence.

“The Impact of Retail Theft & Violence 2024” also compared statistics from the years before and following the COVID pandemic. The study found retailers reported a 93% increase in average shoplifting incidents in 2023 versus 2019, and 91% of retailers stated shoplifters were exhibiting more violence and aggression during the same period.

Progress has been made

Although the retail industry still contends with high levels of theft and violence, progress has been made across several states and jurisdictions, specifically involving organized retail crime activity.

Today, 28 states have established criminal laws focusing on either those engaged in ORC or enhanced penalties for those who steal repeatedly for the purpose of reselling stolen goods. Several states and jurisdictions have established task forces comprised of law enforcement agencies and prosecutors, focusing on the investigation and prosecution of those involved in ORC activity.

Forty-eight U.S. states operate an Organized Retail Crime Association, bringing together law enforcement and retailers to share information and assist each other in complex investigative support.

Many of these initiatives have multiplied over the past few years, emphasizing the need for resources, partnerships and laws that can best counter the “orchestrators” of the daily thefts that occur across the retail ecosystem.

These efforts have borne some success in the detection, investigation and disruption of ORC groups ranging from smaller, local groups to transnational polycriminals. Engagement by federal agencies like HSI and FBI have shown the complexities of ORC activity with investigations involving cargo theft or financial schemes involving gift card tampering, with proceeds and product leaving U.S. borders.

ORCA Group's $1 Million ORC Grant
Tukwila, Wash. Police target Organized Retail Crime with state grant
The Tukwila Police Department is ramping up efforts to combat organized retail crime (ORC) after being selected as one of three agencies statewide to receive a share of a $1 million grant awarded to the Washington Organized Retail Crime Association (WAORCA).

Organized retail crime is estimated to cost Washington state’s retail industry upwards of $3 billion annually in merchandise losses. Unlike small-scale shoplifting, ORC involves the theft of high-value items such as power tools, designer clothing, handbags, and perfumes, often resold for profit through various channels.

The Tukwila Police Department’s Special Emphasis Unit (SEU) has launched targeted operations in partnership with local retailers, leading to multiple arrests, including individuals with active felony and misdemeanor warrants.

These stings also aim to address the regional nature of ORC, as suspects often target multiple retailers across jurisdictions.

The department emphasized that repeat offenders and those with ORC intent are now being booked into jail rather than released on the scene, signaling a shift from pandemic-era practices of “catch, cite, and release.” Officers reported that suspects, often accustomed to leniency, have expressed surprise at facing tougher consequences. tukwilablog.com

Calif. Wildfires Hit Retail
L.A. Wildfires Hit Fashion Hard

The industry expressed horror and resilience as more businesses were impacted by the out-of-control fires.

Fashion and retail reeled along with Los Angeles on Thursday as the city — home of Hollywood and so many fashion dreams — battled through another day of out-of-control fires and almost unimaginable devastation.

The damages — both physical and psychological — are still mounting and cannot be reckoned, but a preliminary read from AccuWeather predicted economic losses could run as high as $57 billion. Even once the fires are under control, the economic impact is expected to be felt for months afterward. Fashion has long counted L.A. as a city of its own, from the glitzy red carpets and celebrities to the megawatt shopping districts and the denim brands that favor the area for manufacturing.

In interviews and on social media, the industry’s reaction has mingled horror with resilience — whether people were recovering after the loss of a store, as was the case for Elyse Walker, fleeing from the fire or watching it all unfold from afar.

Jonny Saven, CEO of L’Agence: said, “We are in the thick of things. Our homes, offices, stores, and teams are all impacted, especially with our headquarters in L.A. All three of our L.A. stores, Malibu, Beverly Hills and Melrose Place, remain closed."

The Pacific Palisades area has been particularly devastated by the Palisades Fire, which according to authorities has burnt 17,000 acres over three days and is yet to be contained. Palisades Village, which houses stores such as ALC, Alo Yoga, Bottega Veneta, Veronica Beard, Cult Gaia, Favorite Daughter, Brandy Melville, Lululemon, Paige and Vince, is temporarily closed. The walkable village is home to fashion, jewelry and beauty boutiques and police are not allowing anybody into the area. wwd.com

San Francisco's Retail Exodus Continues
Wave of Walgreens stores to abruptly shutter across San Francisco
A dozen Walgreens stores are slated to shutter across the city of San Francisco at the end of February, spokesperson Marty Maloney confirmed to SFGATE on Wednesday night. The news comes just after the pharmacy chain announced the pending January closure of three East Bay stores and 1,200 others nationwide over the next three years in an effort to improve earnings and control operating costs.

When asked for the reason for the closure, Maloney provided the same statement a previous Walgreens spokesperson shared with SFGATE when the closures of two stores in Oakland and one in Richmond were announced last month.

“Our retail pharmacy business is central to our go-forward business strategy,” he said in an email. “However, increased regulatory and reimbursement pressures are weighing on our ability to cover the costs associated with rent, staffing, and supply needs.”

Maloney did not confirm the number of employees affected by the closure but said “as many as possible” will be given the opportunity to transfer to other stores. Most of the prescriptions will be transferred to nearby stores, and Walgreens plans to contact customers with information regarding where they can go for future pick-ups, he added. sfgate.com

Enhancing Security with Intrusion Detection and Access Control Integrations

Essential security tools, such as intrusion alarms and access control, play pivotal roles in preventing suspicious, prohibited, or criminal activities within your building.

Access control provides additional security coverage by using both mobile and physical ID cards to open otherwise locked doors. Combining cloud-supported access control and video security platforms creates a complete solution that integrates key card access with visual verification capabilities, enabling you to accurately identify individuals entering specific areas and ensure access is not being given to unauthorized persons. Intrusion integrations provide video verification at alarm panels, significantly reducing false alarms and allowing you to take appropriate action in critical incidents.

The Prominent & Perplexing Cybersecurity Threats Coming This Year
4 cybersecurity trends to watch in 2025

Critical industries are up against never before seen challenges to remain secure and operational, while regulatory pressures have completely upended the role of the CISO in corporate America.

These are the four trends Cybersecurity Dive identified as the most prominent and perplexing heading into 2025.

Single points of failure proliferate

Last year brought multiple high-profile examples illustrating what can go wrong when IT systems fail. These single points of failure — as evidenced by CrowdStrike’s faulty software update, a devastating ransomware attack on Change Healthcare, and a spree of attacks targeting Snowflake customers — will continue to hit other pockets of technology and systems in 2025, cybersecurity experts warn.

Regulatory environment, tense threat landscape create new landscape for CISOs

Top cybersecurity officers at U.S. companies are gaining influence in the boardroom, but feeling greater pressures than ever before. The heightened threat of malicious cyber activity has had a profound impact on the corporate regulatory environment.

Telecom attacks will fester into 2025

Federal cyber authorities ended 2024 struggling to contain and determine the scope of a sweeping series of attacks on U.S. telecom networks. The potential for further damage remains and will rankle officials into the new year.

Evolution of the CISO

The changes in the regulatory environment has led to massive evolution in the role of the CISO, particularly at publicly traded companies. Internally, the role of the CISO has gained considerable importance within the governance structure of modern companies. The executives also have more influence in the boardroom and C-suite.  cybersecuritydive.com

Ransomware Gangs Successfully Hit 1,204 Organizations in 2024
Ransomware Shock—$133 Million Paid, 195 Million Records Compromised
AdvertisementGlobally, across 2024, ransomware gangs had confirmed success against 1,204 organizations, with another 4,257 attacks claimed by the cybercriminals responsible as published on their data leak sites but without acknowledgment from the alleged victims. That’s just the tip of the ransomware threat iceberg, according to a detailed analysis published on Jan. 9. Here’s what you need to know.

The Comparitech end-of-year ransomware report makes for truly shocking reading when the raw numbers are absorbed:

Just taking into account the confirmed attacks, some 195,414,994 records were compromised, and ransoms totalling $133.5 million were paid, with the average being an astonishing $9,532,263. The 195.4 million records breached, although this number is still rising apparently, is lower than that for 2023 when 261.5 million records were known to have been exfiltrated.

When it comes to the gangs responsible, by far the most prolific was RansomHub with 89 confirmed attacks, then LockBit on 83, Medusa on 62 and Play with 57 confirmed. Comparitech categorized ransomware attacks into four sectors: business, education, government, and healthcare. forbes.com

China's Cyber Threats Continue to Grow
National cyber director calls for deterrence against China-affiliated cyber threats

Harry Coker Jr. said China and other adversaries cannot be allowed free reign to conduct malicious cyber activities.

National Cyber Director Harry Coker Jr. on Tuesday warned the U.S. has to do a better job of deterring the ongoing cyber threat from the People’s Republic of China, referencing current campaigns of threat activity targeting critical infrastructure.

The American public needs to be reminded of the unacceptable risk posed by a series of malicious cyber campaigns linked to China, Coker said. This level of threat activity needs to be met by consequences from the U.S. and its allies, Coker said.

“It’s too easy to become complacent while adversaries are prepositioning themselves on our critical infrastructure. We take it for granted that critical infrastructure is there to serve us, to help us maintain a quality of life and it is there until it is not,” Coker said during a conversation with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. cybersecuritydive.com

Top Target for Porch Pirates?

‘Porch pirates’ most likely to strike in DC than anywhere else
Nowhere in the United States are "porch pirates," or thieves who steal packages left on front porches by delivery drivers, more likely to strike than in the nation's capital, according to a new analysis.

Package theft crime rings cost the nation $12 billion in 2023, but the problem appeared to most heavily affect residents of Washington, D.C., more than any other state or territory nationwide, according to a study shared over the weekend by Suzuki Law Offices of Arizona.

Investigators gauged porch theft partly by the number of posts on the social media platform X about the "porch pirates." Washington led with 193.3 posts per 100,000 people.

Mississippi had the fewest reports of "porch pirates," with only 8.9 complaints on X for every 100,000 residents, more than 20 times fewer than in Washington.

New York reported a billion dollars in package losses due to front porch thieves in 2023, followed by Chicago, which lost $450 million in goods due to crime rings targeting average Americans.

"In 2023 alone, we witnessed nearly 93 million package thefts, with 261,000 incidents occurring daily," said Suzuki Law Firm in its report.

Package theft rose during the holiday season as more people chose to shop online rather than in-store. Roughly 300,000 packages went missing daily during the holiday season in 2023.

Amazon packages made up 119 million of those stolen, and 1 in every 180 Amazon packages delivered never made it to their owner.

Walmart was also a top victim of "porch pirates," reporting $6.1 billion in losses in 2022 due to retail theft, which included in-store theft and other types, such as porch theft. gazette.com

AI-Powered Shopping Assistants Fuel Sales Boost
AI Chatbots Spark Online Shopping During 2024 Holiday Season
Online holiday shopping in 2024 reached $241 billion, a nearly 9% increase compared to last year. Recent data from Adobe Analytics credits AI chatbots for a substantial boost in traffic to e-commerce sites.

Between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31, Adobe statistics showed a 1,300% rise in shopper clicks to retail sites provided by an AI-powered shopping assistant versus the 2023 holiday season. Cyber Monday saw the most significant upswing, surging 1,950%.

An Adobe survey found one-fifth of shoppers use AI to search for sales and deals. According to FOX Business, of the 5,000 respondents, almost 20% asked AI about a specific product and 15% got brand recommendations from a chatbot. Most telling is the response by 70% of participants who said AI improves the shopping experience. retailwire.com

San Diego, CA: Update: Woman Sentenced Over Running $3M Retail Theft Ring
A Bonsall woman who ran a retail theft ring that targeted stores nationwide and resulted in millions of dollars in losses was sentenced today to five years and four months in state prison. Michelle Mack, 54, was also ordered to pay $3 million in restitution to Ulta and Sephora, as those stores were the ones targeted by members of the theft ring over the course of nearly a decade, according to the California Attorney General’s Office, which prosecuted the case. Mack pleaded guilty to charges that include conspiracy to commit a crime. The restitution amount is to be split with her husband and co-defendant, Kenneth Mack, who previously pleaded guilty and was sentenced last year. Tulsa, OK: BJ's Brewhouse Manager stabbed, suspect shot by police
An investigation is underway after a 32-year-old man allegedly stabbed a worker at a restaurant in Tulsa. According to Tulsa Police, on Thursday after 1:00 pm, officers were called to BJ's Brewhouse for a reported stabbing. Investigators said the incident started when the 32-year-old man entered the business and started a disturbance. He was reportedly yelling and threatening customers and employees at the front of the store. TPD said the manager of the store tried to calm the situation down and get the suspect to leave, but things escalated. The man reportedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the manager. When the manager put his hands up in a defensive manner, the suspect stabbed him in the hand. To keep customers and employees safe, the manager yelled for them to run to the back of the store to get away from the suspect. Investigators said the suspect left the store after chasing others around in the restaurant for a brief moment. Customers and employees barricaded the doors and locked them to keep the suspect from going back inside. Upon arrival of police, the suspect left the restaurant and walked toward nearby businesses and hotels to the east of the mall. TPD said officers tried using a taser to stop the suspect, but it did not work. Given the suspect’s tendency for violence and showing intent to do harm to innocent people, one Officer used his duty pistol and fired upon the suspect striking him. The suspect went to the ground and was taken into custody. The victim and the suspect were taken to the hospital. Officials said they are expected to recover.  ktul.com

Robberies, Incidents & Thefts

Toronto, Canada: Uptick in Jewelry store Robberies tied to Organized Crime, says public safety expert
A crime and safety expert said an uptick of jewelry store robberies from the GTA on down to the London region is likely tied to organized crime. The comments come from CTV Public Safety Analyst and former OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis and follow a violent attempted robbery in London(opens in a new tab) this week. “That’s often the case that they’re going from some other larger centre and then hitting a lot of smaller markets, and then getting back to the larger centre,” explained Lewis. In 2024, the GTA experienced a rash of jewelry store smash and grab type robberies, often involving several suspects. In one case, at least ten suspects were caught on cell phone video involved in such a robbery at a mall in Markham. Lewis said the suspects are often young people under the employ of organized crime groups. “These, almost kind of high-profile heists, almost like a swarm, smash and grab sort of things have been happening increasingly right across Canada. Largely controlled by organized crime. They hire local thugs, often young people to actually conduct the thefts. And of course it’s all coordinated by higher-ups in organized crime groups,” explained Lewis.  london.ctvnews.ca

Flexibility and molding to the environment you're in is the first step towards integration and inclusion. In order to be absolutely effective, an executive must first become one with their surroundings and mold to what it is as opposed to expecting them to mold to you.
