The U.S. Crime Surge
The Retail Impact
Parking Lot Safety Concerns Can Scare Away Shoppers
In Case You Missed It: One-Third of US Women Avoid In-Person Shopping
Due to Parking Lot Safety Concerns
New LVT US consumer survey reveals the role of safety in shaping
holiday shopping habits, with parking lot concerns influencing consumer
decisions
For some Americans, holiday shopping isn’t just about finding the
perfect gift—it’s about feeling safe while doing so. According to a new
survey by LVT (LiveView
Technologies, Inc.), parking lot safety is a key factor shaping
shopping habits this year. Nearly one-third (32%) of women say
that fears about parking lot safety influence their decision to shop
in person, and over half of people surveyed
(54%) feel the least safe in parking areas compared to other retail
spaces.
These insights are part of a broader LVT survey of 2,000 U.S. consumers
exploring how perceptions of safety impact consumer behavior during the
holidays and beyond. With nearly half of all retail theft occurring in
the winter, and 81% of those incidents taking place during the
holiday shopping season according to the
Global Retail Theft Barometer, this new data underscores the
importance of robust security measures in public spaces.
Safety Concerns in Parking Lots
While crowded stores and long checkout lines are common holiday gripes,
parking lots present a unique set of safety challenges:
• Parking structures are a leading
concern: 59% of women and 47% of men feel the least safe
in parking lots and garages, compared to just 17% of all respondents
who feel unsafe inside retail stores.
• Lighting matters: Poor
lighting was identified as the top parking lot safety concern by 69%
of women and 56% of men, making it a critical issue for retail centers
to address.
Additionally, the
National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) by the Bureau of Justice
Statistics reported a 14.6% increase in simple assaults in a
“commercial place, parking lot, or other public area” from 2022 to
2023.

The Unintended Consequences of Tough
LP Measures
Retailers’ efforts to combat theft may backfire
Despite dramatic anti-theft measures put in place by retailers like
Walmart and Walgreens, few have found a silver bullet—and many have
instead faced unintended consequences.
• Theft prevention measures are irritating. Nearly 4 in 5
(78%) of consumers say it’s annoying when products are locked up or
secured in cases, per a recent Zebra survey.
• Those roadblocks increase strain on store associates. Seven in
10 (70%) say it's hard to find an associate to unlock those cases
when shopping in a store.
• They also create a negative impression about safety. Roughly
the same share (71%) are concerned that stores with locked cases
experience more theft and crime—that’s up 8 percentage points from last
year.
Why it matters: Retailers’
aggressive tactics push consumers away; about 1 in 5 shoppers have
left a store without getting what they needed because a retail
associate wasn’t available to help.
• Rather than deal with a frustrating in-store experience,
many consumers turn to Amazon, which they know will offer more “speed
and ease” than physical stores, said CEO Andy Jassy on a recent
earnings call.
• Once a shopper buys essentials like toothpaste and paper towels
from Amazon, they’ll likely buy it again.
Our take: Brick-and-mortar
retailers need to avoid ceding their few clear advantages over online
competitors—letting shoppers touch and feel their products and
making it easy for consumers to get what they need quickly.

States Continue to Enact Tough
Crackdowns
How Florida plans to decrease retail theft in 2025
Experts weigh in on how Florida’s updated penalties may lower that
number.
Florida is one out of at least eight states
that have upped the penalties for shoplifters in 2024. In
October, a new law went into effect, adding higher fines and longer
periods in prison depending on how much of a store's product(s) were
stolen.
The lowest penalty is for stealing goods with a value of less than
$100, as you could face a fine of up to $500, imprisonment for up to 60
days, or both. Taking part in organized retail theft turns into a
third-degree felony, leading to up to five years in prison and fines
adding up to $5,000.
In more serious cases, second-degree felonies bring up to 15 years in
prison, a fine of up to $10,000, or both. And stealing $100,000 or
more is classified as "Grand Theft of the First Degree" where you could
spend 30 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000.
After seeing the success this law change has brought California,
Hollander is optimistic for numbers of shoplifting crimes in Florida to
drop.
“They've just made it much more difficult and much more onerous on
the shoplifter if they get caught," Hollander said. "And so, it's
not worth it unless they get caught. You know, you see video of these
people stealing from high-end department stores, and that just is not
happening to the same extent as it was because they're going to jail."

Will California's Anti-Theft Laws
Work?
New California crime laws seek to deter retail theft, property crimes
Experts say time will tell if laws taking effect Jan. 1 will work
A new batch of laws targeting crimes that have increased a “sense of
social anxiety” among Californians reflects support for stronger
penalties following a decade of easing punishments, but experts say
they don’t signal a return to the “tough-on-crime” policies of decades
past.
The laws taking effect on New Year’s Day will tackle property crimes,
retail theft rings and other offenses. Some will allow prosecutors
to add new sentencing enhancements for some types of retail theft or
extend laws expanding the definition of organized retail theft that
previously were set to end. Others introduce new regulations aimed at
stemming the sale of stolen goods online or attempting to return stolen
goods to stores for money.
Experts say the laws passed in 2024 represent a slight shift away
from a more recent focus on decreasing incarceration but won’t push
California back to its tougher policies of the 1980s. Rather, they
say, the changes reflect popular support for tougher penalties.
“We had been having a period of reform, sort of moving the state away
from a multi-decade-long commitment to heavy use of incarceration,” said
Jonathan Simon, a professor of criminal justice law at UC Berkeley Law.
“It’s not clear whether what we’re seeing is the end of that period
of reform.”

One Way to Avoid Theft? Clear the
Entire Store
California store’s ingenious anti-theft technique leaves would-be
robbers scratching their heads
A California store developed a unique security system to stop the
brazen, heartless thieves who have been breaking in recently,
causing damage to the business. Roman Gonzales, the owner of
Fresno-based DripOnDrip, was heartbroken when a group of robbers broke
into his old shoe store in November 2023, looting armfuls of merch.
So he implemented a simple yet foolproof plan to stop his merchandise
from falling into the hands of the unwanted late-night guests.
Instead of locking the store up with military-grade mechanisms, Gonzales
clears out the store’s display floor each night
and moves the empty, open cash registers to the front of the store in
view from outside.
On Dec. 30, two white sedans pulled up to the front of the store just
after 4 a.m., as one of the drivers rammed through the storefront,
creating a hole for several masked and hooded menaces to run inside.
Security cameras throughout the store recorded the brazen robbery and
captured the unidentified raiders’ shock when they discovered there was
nothing for them to steal, according to video obtained by KSEE.
Gonzales ridiculed the attempted thieves’ thoughtless actions for
destroying his storefront.
“If they would have looked through the window, they would have saved
themselves some time and energy,” the store owner told the outlet.
“They would have noticed that there is nothing here on the floor for
them to take.”

45K Store Closures Coming?
These 5 retailers closed stores in 2024
In ‘a very difficult business,’ retail store closings typically
signal more about an individual company than the industry overall, one
analyst says.
Although the industry began 2024 with a
better than expected financial performance, several retailers
started the first six months with plans to shrink their physical store
footprints. Other chains shuttered all their locations as part of
bankruptcies.
Foot Locker reiterated its
plans to close about 400 mall-based stores within the next two
years, and Best Buy, which closed 24 stores last year, said it
plans to close up to 15 more this year. Additionally,
Walgreens said that it
will close around 1,200 stores in the next three years and in
mid-December GameStop announced it was
eyeing more store closures than in previous years.
UBS analysts forecast that
about 45,000 retail stores might close in the coming years. The
report found that the sectors with the most urgent need are apparel and
accessories, consumer electronics and home furnishings. However, due in
part to the fact that stores are increasingly serving as fulfillment
centers for same or next-day pickup or delivery, the industry is far
from morphing into a post-store era, UBS said.

Store Closures Up 28% in the UK
Retail lost close to 13,500 stores in 2024, study finds
The number of shops owned by independent retailers that shuttered
in 2024 was up 45.5% year on year
Nearly 13,500 shops shut for good in 2024, according to data from
the Centre for Retail Research. This is a 28.4%
increase on the 10,494 which closed in the calendar year of 2023.
More than half of all stores closed, 7,537 in total, were closed through
retailers undergoing some form of insolvency proceedings.
A further 5,942 shops were closed through “rationalisation” as
part of cost cutting programs by large retailers or independents simply
shutting up shop for good. Independent retailers, typically those small
businesses with 1 to 5 stores, accounted for 84.1% of all store closures
during 2024.
In the previous calendar year independents were responsible for 74.5%
or 7,793 of all store closures. The number of shops owned by
independent retailers that shuttered in 2024 was up 45.5% year on year.
The Centre for Retail Research stated that it
expects store closures to rise to around 17,350 during 2025
with around 14,660 coming from independent retailers.

More Pushback of Company DEI Practices
Fight over Starbucks ‘racial quota’ hiring practices will go on in
Florida
Attorney General Ashley Moody says company violating diversity
ruling in Florida Civil Rights Act
After
an investigative agency sided with the company, Florida Attorney General
Ashley Moody’s office will urge an administrative law judge to find that
Starbucks has improperly used race-based hiring practices.
Moody in May filed a complaint with the Florida Commission on Human
Relations alleging that Starbucks had policies that “appear on their
face to be racial quotas.” But after an investigation, the
commission’s executive director in November issued a determination that
there was “no reasonable cause” to believe that the Seattle-based coffee
company violated a state anti-discrimination law.
Moody’s office responded by filing a petition that led Monday to the
case going to the state Division of Administrative Hearings, where a
judge will consider it.
The case came as Moody and other Republican leaders in Florida and
across the country have targeted diversity, equity and inclusion
efforts by companies and at places such as colleges and
universities.

Will Ransomware & Data Breaches
Continue to Surge in 2025?
Cyber threats in 2024: Key incidents and what to expect in 2025
2024 witnessed a surge in cyberattacks, from ransomware and data breaches
to AI-powered threats. Here’s what experts have to say about 2025.
In 2024, the world witnessed unprecedented levels of cyber threats driven by
advancements in technology and increasing reliance on it. Here’s what
experts have to say about 2025. From ransomware attacks to AI-powered scams, and
critical security failures – a wave of cyber incidents made headlines,
underscoring the need for stronger digital defenses.
According to a report by Prahar, a non-profit organisation, over 500 million
cyberattacks were recorded in just the first quarter of 2024. Reports also
show a 46 per cent increase in cyberattacks in the second quarter of 2024
compared to the same period the previous year.
According to Pankit Desai, CEO and co-founder of Sequretek, a global
cybersecurity company, “2024 saw the cyberthreat landscape widening beyond
imagination. With the emergence of AI, Generative AI, and ML-enabled attacks,
cybercriminals leveraged AI to automate and enhance their tactics making attacks
more sophisticated and harder to detect.”
Pankit revealed that 2024 saw a rise in ransomware attacks where offenders
targeted organisations globally, and extorted money by threatening to release
sensitive data. Data breaches were another common vulnerability and human
behaviour was exploited with phishing attacks. “2024 saw the emergence of Gen AI
deepfakes for influencing public opinion during elections too. Technological
shifts in AI, ML, and IoT (Internet of Things) reshaped attack-defence
mechanisms. IoT saw an increase in threats due to insufficient security measures
in connected devices.”

Employees Putting Companies at Risk
When risky cybersecurity behavior becomes a habit among employees
While the majority of employees avoid risky behaviors, a small subset makes them
a habit, posing a significant cybersecurity challenge, according to Mimecast.
48%
of employees engaged in behaviors that exposed their organizations to cyber risk,
with browsing violations being the most common (36% of users). Browsing
violations, unlike phishing and malware events, do not directly impact security.
However, they can increase the likelihood of encountering malware or online
scams.
The study also emphasizes that human risk is not evenly distributed. A
small percentage of users are responsible for a disproportionate share of
security incidents. For instance, just 1% of users are behind 44% of all clicked
phishing emails, and 5% are responsible for all malware incidents.
In a 1,000-person organization, 14 employees are expected to download or execute
malware. Seven of these employees will trigger malware on a monthly basis, and
four will encounter malicious software on a weekly basis.
Managers are more frequently targeted by phishing attacks due to their public
profiles and higher levels of access, but they are less likely to click on
them. Executives, sales, and board members, being public-facing roles, also
receive a high volume of phishing emails.

'Complete Reset Needed'
CISOs don’t invest enough in code security
72% of security leaders agree that the age of AI necessitates a complete
reset of how organizations approach application security, according to
Cycode.
This urgency is reinforced by the fact that 93 billion lines of code were
generated in the past year alone, driven in large part by GenAI. This
explosion of code is clearly overwhelming security teams, with 73% of
security leaders confirming that “code is everywhere.”
“IDC’s latest DevSecOps research highlights that insecure AI-generated code
ranks among the top application security challenges for organizations in 2024,
aligning with Cycode’s insights. This underscores the rising importance of code
security as a cornerstone of application security strategies for 2025,” said
Katie Norton, Research Manager at IDC. “As development and threat
environments grow more complex, strengthening code security is crucial to
safeguarding innovation efforts.”

Online Scam Epidemic
How to avoid shopping scams in an increasingly digital world
A lot of money flies around this time of year and with the rise in online
shopping, so does a lot of personal information. There are, however, ways you
can protect yourself and your money from those seeking to take advantage of the
merry season.
While the holidays and New Year are often a joyous time, research suggests
there's an increase in scammers targeting consumers. According to a 2024 AARP
report, 82% of U.S. consumers have experienced or been
targeted by at least one form of holiday fraud.
From gift cards to identity theft and the financial exploitation of older
people, online shoppers like Sandino Sanchez warn others not to fall victim
to scams.
“I just deal with the large franchises," Sanchez said. "I really don’t venture
out looking for a better price."
When it comes to shopping, Sanchez said if a deal looks too good to be true,
chances are it's a scam.
“Keep your transactions simple with vendors or banks that you normally go to,"
Sanchez said.
When it comes to protecting assets and credit scores, Stephen Robert, CEO of
Bedrock Credit America, said it's better to be safe than sorry.
“I remind people all of the time, especially this time of year, to constantly be
going to creditreport.com and doing credit checks to make sure that everything
looks good," Robert said.
He suggests consumers check their credit to ensure no new accounts were
opened in their name to be sure expenses are being reported accurately.

Amazon's Return to Work Process Begins
Seattle Amazon workers begin return to office full time starting Thursday
Beginning Thursday, Amazon employees will be required to work in the office five
days a week. CEO Andy Jassy sent out a message to employees about the change
Sept. 16. Like many other companies, Amazon’s corporate employees worked
remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2021, Amazon created a policy that allowed leaders to determine how their
teams worked. Then, last year, the tech giant asked all employees to come back
to the office three days per week.
At the time, at least 30,000 Amazon employees did not
agree with the return-to-work policy, according to a signed petition
against it. That letter was rejected by Amazon’s head of human resources,
according to a leaked memo from Insider.
In his note, Jassy said the company has seen that it is easier for employees
to “learn, model, practice and strengthen” Amazon’s culture and brainstorm
when they’re together in person.
“If anything, the last 15 months we’ve been back in the office at least three
days a week has strengthened our conviction about the benefits,” Jassy
wrote in September.

Roseville, MN: Connecticut couple charged in alleged Lululemon theft
spree that netted up to $1 million
A Connecticut couple has been charged in connection with an elaborate
two-month theft spree at Lululemon stores across the country that an
investigator with the retailer estimates netted about $1 million worth
of product. Jadion Richards, 44, and Akwele Lawes-Richards, 45, were
arrested on Nov. 14 in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul, Minnesota suburb of
Woodbury. The couple, from Danbury, Connecticut, were charged with
organized retail theft after a Lululemon retail crime investigator

But Lululemon's investigator said evidence shows their crimes go back
to September and took place in states like Utah, Colorado, New York and
Connecticut, according to the criminal complaint. Attorneys
representing Richards and Lawes-Richards did not immediately respond to
USA TODAY's request for comment Thursday. Richards and Lawes-Richards
were stopped after exiting the Lululemon store in Roseville, Minnesota,
on Nov. 14 when the security alarm went off, according to the criminal
complaint. Richards allegedly claimed store employees racially profiled
him and the two were allowed to leave afterward. The Lululemon
investigator later alleged the two visited the store the day before on
Nov. 13 with an unidentified man and stole 45 item valued at nearly
$5,000. That same day, the pair had allegedly conducted four other
thefts in Minneapolis, Edina and Minnetonka.

Networking has always been a key to career development and finding that next
job. However, if you're not careful it can also limit you, eliminate you and
even work against you. If your network is comprised of executives doing exactly
what you do, then you may have competition and may even find some working
against you. You've got to broaden and expand your network outside your
immediate group and establish relationships outside your company and your
professional circle. Remembering that quantity is no substitute for quality and,
as in any mutually beneficial relationship, what you bring to the table for them
is as important as what they bring to the table for you.
