eBay Notorious Romanian Fraudster Sentenced

eBay Global Asset Protection and internal business partners within the Global Information Security team coordinate international investigation into notorious Romanian hacker leads to three year suspended sentence, although suspect had already served approx 2 years in custody while case worked through the courts. Members of the eBay investigation groups assisted with arrest and testified at trial providing critical evidence leading to conviction. The Bucharest, Romanian appeal court issued the sentence to 23-year-old Vlad Duiculescu, AFP reported. He was arrested in Romania in 2008, with help from US Secret Service agents, after eBay said his exploits caused at least $1 million in damage. eBay programmers utilized this case to tighten internal trust & safety vulnerabilities that either were exploited or at least attempted to by this suspect. Ex-CSK Auto CEO giving back $2.8M in SEC accord. The former CEO and chairman of CSK Auto Corp. will give back about $2.8 million in bonuses and profits from sales of company stock he received while federal regulators say the auto parts supplier was committing accounting fraud in 2002 to 2004. Jenkins wasn't personally charged in connection with the alleged accounting violations. But a 2002 anti-fraud law requires senior executives to repay bonuses, other incentive pay and stock profits they received during a period in which their company violated financial reporting rules. The SEC is empowered to recoup the money for the company in what is called a "clawback." The SEC had sued Jenkins in July 2009, seeking $4.1 million. It was the agency's first "clawback" case against a person who wasn't accused of otherwise violating the securities laws. (Source kwgc.com)

Working in the Grey, by Using your Grey

Concepts of right and wrong differ among cultures, change over time, and arenít always black or white. During a career in loss prevention it is inevitable that you will be put in the position of interpreting a policy or legal statute and making a recommendation or decision on what action your company should take. While consistency is important, it is even more important to gather all of the facts, consider them in light of everything you know and believe today, and come to a conclusion without being influenced by your personal biases. In other words, use the grey matter between your ears. Those that base their decision entirely on whatís written down in a policy binder or who say, "we've always handled it this way before" reach easy decisions - not necessarily good decisions.
