Best Buy to close its 11 UK big box pilot stores, acquiring the remaining interest in Carphone Warehouse Group. The $1.3 billion dollar deal Best Buy will shift focus to the 2500 small box stores of Carphone Warehouse and The Phone House. Best Buy also revealed a deal to acquire MindShift Technologies (a cloud-service provider) for $167 million, the deal expected to be closed by the end of the year. (Source foxbusiness.com)

Best Buy to join the growing list of Midnight opening on Black Friday. Macy's, Target and Kohl's have committed to the midnight openings and surely others will follow. Wal Mart and Toys R Us have yet to reveal their plans; last year Toys opened at 10pm on Thanksgiving evening. (Source wsj.com)

Simon Property Group files lawsuit against Amazon in Indiana. Simon (Mall Developer based in Indiana) has requested that the state begin collecting sales taxes on sales made by Amazon. Simon Property Group believes that "main street" retailers are being harmed and could affect the jobs of hundreds of thousands of retail workers. (Source auctionbytes.com)

European Retail sales dropped in September. Forecasters predicted a drop of 0.1 percent; the drop was nearly 0.7 percent the largest decrease since May. (Source bloomberg.com)

Two Suspects arrested for a cart full of merchandise at Home Depot. The suspected attempted to leave the West Nyack, NY Home Depot with $3000 in merchandise, first stopped by Loss Prevention, followed by the police. Upon arrest and a search of the waiting getaway car, police discovered another $1000 in merchandise. (Source nyack.patch.com)

Home Depot, Gap and Nordstrom upgraded to outperform. Home Depot shares have jumped from $38 to $42 per share in the last 12-month period. (Source foxbusiness.com)

EVP and Chief Merchandising Officer at OfficeMax to be replaced. Ryan Vero will be leaving Office Max on December 2, OfficeMax did not give a reason for the move. Vero had joined Office Max in 1994. OfficeMax's retail segment reported a sales decrease of 4.8% to $891.5 million in the third quarter of 2011 compared with the third quarter of 2010. (Source retailingtoday.com)

Shoplifting suspect found submerged in a creek. The recovery of 5 video games from Kmart became a short man hunt. Now the suspect is facing 3rd degree robbery, 3rd degree theft and interfering with a peace officer charges. The 18-year-old also had several outstanding warrants and is now facing nearly $100,000 for bail. (Source gazettetimes.com)

 

eBay Supports Retail Theft Investigation Leads to Arrests

eBay Global Asset Protection investigators assigned to PROACT retail relations group actively supported an investigation conducted by highly recognized retailers, including Target and greater Pennsylvania law enforcement agencies leads to arrests in organized theft case. eBay investigators engaged with retail investigators and agreed to monitor marketplace accounts suspected of being involved in this scam without actioning them to support active investigation efforts. The ring is believed to have operated since 2008 and used bogus UPC stickers to buy expensive items cheaply, and allegedly placed the items including vacuums, breast pumps and Lego's on eBay, laundering proceeds through PayPal & Wal-Mart. The companies cooperated in an effort to bust the ring, working with Montgomery County District Attorney office and officials in 10 Pennsylvania counties. A representative from eBay PROACT team attended the press conference announcing the arrest as well. The suspects are charged with Organized Retail Theft, Corrupt Organizations, Dealing in Proceeds of Unlawful Activities, Conspiracy and other related charges.  Click here for full article

Four Mississippi suspects arrested for the theft of $6000 worth of PlayStations. A simple traffic stop leads police to a group believed to be responsible for PlayStation and movie thefts from Wal Marts around Southern Mississippi. Police also believe the 4 may have been responsible for similar thefts in Louisiana and Florida. (Source sunherald.com)

"The Crew" of the Detroit area arrested. Duffel bag filled with video games thrown over the Wal-Mart Lawn and Garden fence. The 3 suspects, calling themselves 'the crew' have prior criminal histories and are sitting in the Livingston County jail on up to $100,000 bond. (Source livingstondaily.com)
