US lawmakers introduced a bill yesterday "The Stop Online Piracy Act" which has received bipartisan support in the House of Representatives and is the House version of a bill introduced in the Senate in May known as the Theft of Intellectual Property Act or Protect IP Act. Giving US authorities more tools to crack down on websites accused of piracy of movies, television shows and music and the sale of counterfeit goods. House Judiciary Committee chairman Lamar Smith, a Republican from Texas, said the bill "helps stop the flow of revenue to rogue websites and ensures that the profits from American innovations go to American innovators." "The bill prevents online thieves from selling counterfeit goods in the US, expands international protections for intellectual property, and protects American consumers from dangerous counterfeit products," Smith said. Deloitte’s 2011 Annual Holiday Survey of 5,000 U.S. consumers shows of the 42% of consumers who own a smartphone, 27% will use their device while shopping for the holidays. Retailers may want to make sure they have a mobile commerce site that provides a great deal of information, not to mention products at the best prices, because millions of smartphone-toting shoppers will be on the hunt for everything from customer reviews to coupons to good deals. The $91B gift card industry is going digital with 50 % now having e-cards for the first time and with 55 brands letting consumers check their balances on the Web according to a new survey. With over 6 million e-gift cards purchased in the last six months this will only grow and the fraud opportunities will grow with it especially with the consumer being able to check their balances online which opens the back door for hackers. With so much information on money there it will become a primary target. (Source yahoo.com)

With four different brands Best Buy's Asset Protection department is using a shared services concept to cover them and their recent field promotions of four field Directors shows their support and growth of the AP function. These four positions represent new senior level job creation which bodes well for the industry.

3-out-of-5 consumers (59%) will put aside economic worries and spend the same or more this holiday season, according to Deloitte’s 26th annual survey of holiday spending intentions and trends. While this is a slight decline from 2010, it represents an eight percentage point increase from 2009. Great news. (Source retailingtoday.com)

Public clouds are not so secure as they seem to be and have "massive security flaws" according to new research. German researchers say they found flaws in Amazon Web Services that they believe exist in many cloud architectures and enable attackers to gain administrative rights and to gain access to all user data. While the researchers say they have told AWS about the security holes and AWS has fixed them, they believe the same types of attacks would be effective against other cloud services, "since the relevant Web service standards make performance and security incompatible." In the UK retail is struggling and retail employment is shrinking. Stephen Robertson, British Retail Consortium director general, said: "With consumer spending now in recession and retail sales volumes declining, this is the biggest drop in overall retail employment in the two years since we began this survey." Redundancy rates are thankfully low but many retailers are not filling every vacancy. (Source theretailbulletin.com)

Wegman's is cited by OSHA for $195,000 for "alleged repeat and serious violations of workplace safety standards" at the retailer's corporate bakery and distribution center. The administration's inspections determined that Wegmans "failed to develop, utilize and follow" certain procedures related to "lockout/tagout" protocols designed to prevent injury related to the unexpected startup of equipment, and also did not adequately train workers on these procedures. The Loss Prevention Research Council's (LPRC)
7th annual "Impact Conference
"

Read Hayes, PhD, CPP

Director- Loss Prevention Research Council
Co-Director- Loss Prevention Research Team, University of Florida

Retail crime and loss continues, meaning more research on problems and countermeasures are sorely needed. The Loss Prevention Research Council (LPRC) just held their 7th annual Impact Conference hosted by member Office Depot this month. Almost 130 leading retail LP and solution provider executives met to discuss recent and ongoing loss prevention/asset protection research. Companies like Toy-R-Us, Walmart, The Home Depot, Advance Auto, Lowes, Pep Boys, CVS, Bloomingdales, SuperValu, Sterling Jewelers, AAFES, Rite-Aid, Publix, Kmart, Meijer, Sears, Barnes and Noble, Walgreens, Abbott Nutrition, Elizabeth Arden, Kroger, AutoZone, TJX, OfficeMax, Proctor and Gamble, T-Mobile, Dick’s, eBay and Best Buy brainstormed together.

The Impact Conference is unique in that it features a series of breakout sessions with teams of similar retailers and their supplier and product partners working through key issues, needs and the implications of field research.

The LPRC currently has over 65 members and is driven by retailers to support their success by conducting rigorous, practical research on their priority issues. This year, the group explored macro-level research using predictive analysis, along with more micro-level research based on large numbers of in-store offender interviews. Breakout groups determined how to use project findings while identifying what they want the LPRC to further focus on in the supply chain and stores with predictive analytics, more internal and external interviews, and randomized field experiments. Ongoing working group breakouts also focused on benefit denial, video analytics, statistical modeling, and packaging innovation. Visit their website and see how your company can get involved with the LPRC – Real Science. Real Results

68 Great Ideas for Running a Security Program Looking for inspiration? Want to learn a few new ways to elevate your security game? Can you spare five minutes to think strategically and long-term instead of just putting out another fire. Here's a great article from CSOonline.com that is a little more geared towards the CSO but the parallels are great. Interesting read. You may have to go thru a one step registration process but it's well worth it. (A refresher)

What is the Difference Between Management and Leadership? The manager’s job is to plan, organize and coordinate. The leader’s job is to inspire and motivate. Leadership and management must go hand in hand. They are not the same thing. But they are necessarily linked, and complementary. (Recognizing the difference)

Brake for Ghosts and Goblins this Halloween An average of twice as many children are killed in pedestrian accidents on Halloween. Experts stress that kids (and drivers alike) need proper safety instruction before heading out on this holiday. (Safety First)

The thrill of the chase intoxicates us all in the beginning and keeps most of us here for a life time. But ultimately it can also hold us back because it legitimizes our separateness and virtually eliminates the need to evolve with the retail business. Recognizing it and forcing yourself to learn beyond your specialty and embracing the relationships around you will poll vault your career and help you stand out even more.
